Google AI Mode ads are not a universally separate campaign type. They are generally supplied by eligible Search, Shopping, Performance Max, or App campaigns that already enter Google’s auctions. In AI Overviews, Google can place qualifying ads above, below, or, in supported markets and languages, within the generated answer. AI Mode itself is evolving: Google’s May 20, 2026 announcement describes tests in which ads can include product details and an independently generated Gemini explainer, with a clear “Sponsored” label.

Sponsored sitelinks are additional links attached to an ad, sending people to specific pages such as a product, promotion, menu, review, or store-hours page. They do not cost extra when displayed; a click costs the same as a headline click in that ad. This guide explains the current mechanics, what advertisers can control, how to prepare a website, and what the reporting can—and cannot—tell you.

What is the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Mode is a conversational Search experience for complex questions, comparisons, follow-up prompts, and multimodal input. An AI Overview is a generated summary that can appear on a conventional Search results page. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable ad environments.

Google says AI features may use query fan-out: the system breaks a question into related searches across subtopics and data sources, then combines the resulting context into an answer with supporting links. That process means an advertiser’s relevance is evaluated against the user’s commercial query and, for AI Overview placements, the generated context as well.

Experience What the user sees Current ad status
Ordinary Search Traditional results page with text, Shopping, app, or other eligible ad formats Established placements and reporting
AI Overview A generated answer embedded in a Search results page, with supporting links Google documents ads above, below, and in some markets and languages within the overview
AI Mode A conversational interface for exploration, follow-up questions, comparisons, and multimodal prompts Google describes newer ad formats as tests; availability and presentation can change by market, device, query, and rollout stage

Google’s current help documentation describes AI Overview ad availability in more than 200 markets, but a fixed country list, language list, or impression guarantee should not be assumed. Check the live documentation for the account’s target geography before making a forecast.

How do ads show up in AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Google’s documented process starts with an existing campaign and the normal ad auction. There is no general “AI Mode only” switch. An ad must be eligible for the relevant campaign type, satisfy policy and quality requirements, match the commercial intent and context, and win the auction.

  1. The user asks a question. The query may be typed, spoken, uploaded as an image, or refined through follow-up prompts.
  2. Google interprets the request. For AI features, related searches may be run through query fan-out to gather information about subtopics, entities, products, or comparisons.
  3. Commercial intent is assessed. For AI Overview placements, Google says ads can trigger when commercial intent is detected and relevant, quality ads are available for both the query and the overview context.
  4. Eligible campaigns enter the auction. Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and App campaigns can supply ads. They still need to meet ordinary relevance, policy, quality, and auction requirements.
  5. Google selects a placement. Depending on the result page and serving conditions, an ad may appear above, below, or within an AI Overview. In AI Mode, the exact layout depends on the test and rollout available to that user.

Google states that ads shown in AI Overviews are reported as Top Ads. That reporting label does not mean advertisers can isolate those impressions with a dedicated targeting setting.

Are AI Mode ads a new campaign type?

Not according to the current documentation. AI Mode ads are better understood as new placements or creative experiences supplied by existing campaign types, rather than a separate campaign that you create and target exclusively.

This distinction matters for planning. You cannot currently build a campaign whose only eligible inventory is “AI Mode,” and Google’s cited help documentation does not provide a separate AI Overview placement segment. Existing bids, budgets, targeting, creative quality, landing-page relevance, and auction competition continue to influence delivery.

What Google is testing in AI Mode

In its May 20, 2026 announcement, Google said it was testing Gemini-built formats that can combine relevant product details with an independent AI-generated explainer alongside the advertiser’s creative. Google said both new formats would remain clearly marked “Sponsored.” These are tests and future-facing formats, so the appearance, eligibility, and availability may differ by market, device, query, and stage of rollout.

Google also reported that 75% of people in its stated 2026 research said AI Mode helped them make faster, more confident decisions. That is a Google-reported internal or commissioned result, not an independently verified industry benchmark. Google reported in May 2025 that AI Mode queries in early testing were twice as long as traditional Search queries, which helps explain why contextual relevance is important in these experiences.

What does the “Sponsored” label mean?

A sponsored label identifies a paid unit; it does not make the unit an organic supporting link. Google’s October 13, 2025 announcement said text ads are grouped under a persistent Sponsored results label that can appear above or below AI Overviews. The label remains visible as the user scrolls, and a “Hide sponsored results” control can collapse the paid text-ad grouping so the user can focus on organic results.

Shopping units also use sponsored labeling. The wording and layout can vary as Google tests formats, but the purpose is consistent: distinguish paid content from non-paid links.

What are sponsored sitelinks?

A sponsored sitelink is an additional link attached to an ad. Instead of sending every visitor to the headline’s final URL, a sitelink can direct someone to a more specific destination, such as a product category, a current promotion, a review page, a restaurant menu, or store-hours information.

Sitelinks are ad assets, not organic search results. You can create them at the account, campaign, asset-group, or ad-group level, depending on the campaign type and interface. Google may also generate dynamic sitelinks from landing-page content and other account sources. Smart campaigns can generate automatic sitelinks using Google’s systems without a separate manual setup.

Manual and dynamic sitelinks

Type How it is supplied What you control
Manual sitelink You provide link text and a destination URL at an eligible account or campaign level Text, destination, scheduling or status, and association level
Dynamic sitelink Google derives a link from landing pages and other account signals You do not write each generated asset; you can manage eligibility and account settings available in the interface
Smart-campaign automatic sitelink Google’s automation creates sitelinks for the campaign Control depends on the Smart campaign controls presented in the account

Google chooses which eligible assets to serve using predicted usefulness, relevance, device, ad position, and other auction and serving signals. Dynamic sitelinks can appear alongside manual sitelinks or replace them when Google predicts a better result.

How many sitelinks can an ad show?

Google’s documentation describes up to six sitelinks on desktop and up to eight on mobile for relevant Search placements, subject to current format rules. “Up to” is important: an ad may show fewer, or none, if the layout, relevance, device, position, or auction does not support them.

Keep each link text concise and make the destinations materially different. Google policy prohibits using the same link text for multiple sitelinks. Sending several sitelinks to effectively identical pages weakens their usefulness and can reduce the chance that the assets are selected.

Good destination patterns

  • A headline points to a broad service page, while sitelinks lead to pricing, implementation details, and customer support.
  • A retail ad points to a category, with sitelinks for new arrivals, sale items, sizing information, and store locations.
  • A local business ad uses distinct links for booking, menu, directions, and opening hours.

Do I pay extra when someone clicks a sitelink?

No separate sitelink fee is charged. A click on a sitelink is charged at the same click cost as a click on the headline in the same ad. Dynamic sitelinks are likewise charged only when a user clicks through to the site; merely displaying the asset does not create a separate charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says an ad impression is not charged for more than two clicks when rapid multiple clicks are treated as duplicate or invalid. That rule concerns Google’s click accounting and invalid-click handling; it does not mean every sequence of clicks will have an identical cost in every auction.

How do I create and manage sponsored sitelinks?

The exact menu names can vary by campaign type and interface version, but the workflow is consistent: open the Google Ads account, choose the relevant asset or ad-assets area, create a sitelink with distinct text and a final URL, associate it with the desired level, and review its status before serving.

  1. Choose scope. Decide whether the sitelink should apply across the account, to a campaign, to a Performance Max asset group, or only to an ad group.
  2. Write concise link text. State the destination’s purpose, such as “View pricing” or “Find a store,” rather than repeating the headline.
  3. Enter the destination URL. Use a working page on the same site that provides the promised information and is materially different from other sitelink destinations.
  4. Add optional descriptions where available. Use them to explain the benefit of the destination, not to repeat the link text.
  5. Save and check policy status. Resolve disapprovals, broken links, redirects, or mismatched content before evaluating performance.
  6. Review combinations. Google may show manual assets, dynamic assets, or a mixture. Pause an underperforming or outdated asset rather than assuming every created sitelink will appear.

Because Google can select assets dynamically, creating six sitelinks does not guarantee six will appear together. Google Ads Help cites internal data from May 15–24, 2025 indicating up to 3.5% more conversions at a similar cost per conversion when advertisers increased sitelinks to six. That figure is Google’s internal data for the cited period, not a promise for every account.

Can I target only AI Mode?

No direct AI Mode-only or AI Overview-only targeting control is documented. You use the existing campaign’s targeting, audiences, locations, languages, budgets, bids, feeds, and creative. Google decides whether an eligible impression can serve in an AI feature based on query context, commercial intent, relevance, auction results, and the inventory available to that user.

This means a practical test should compare overall campaign results and asset-level performance rather than expecting a clean “AI Mode” campaign row. Do not infer AI Mode volume from a broad Search impression count, and do not assume a sudden change in conversions came from one AI placement without a corresponding reporting field.

How can I get my website into AI Mode or an AI Overview?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in ordinary Search before it can be considered as a supporting link in AI Mode or an AI Overview. There is no additional AI-specific technical requirement, no special AI text file, and no special schema markup that guarantees inclusion.

Technical and content checklist

  • Allow Googlebot to crawl the pages you want discovered, and avoid accidental blocking in robots controls or noindex directives.
  • Make important pages reachable through clear internal links rather than leaving them isolated.
  • Publish useful, readable text that directly answers the page’s subject and matches the title, headings, and structured data.
  • Maintain a usable page experience on mobile and desktop, including reliable loading and navigation.
  • Keep product feeds and Merchant Center information accurate when products are involved.
  • Keep Business Profile details current for local information such as addresses, phone numbers, hours, and services.

Eligibility is not inclusion. A page can be indexed and snippet-eligible without being selected for a particular generated answer, and appearing once does not guarantee future appearances.

How should advertisers measure AI-related ad performance?

Use the reporting that is actually available. Google Ads lets advertisers review sitelink performance and segment statistics for individual sitelink clicks. Those figures can show which destinations attract interaction and whether a link drives useful post-click actions.

For AI Overview placement, the cited documentation says there is no dedicated segment that isolates ads shown within the overview. AI Mode tests may have still different reporting treatment. Track changes in campaign-level conversions, cost per conversion, search terms where available, landing-page behavior, and asset-level clicks, but label any AI-specific interpretation as an inference rather than a directly observed placement total.

Question What you can currently observe What you should not assume
Did a sitelink receive clicks? Individual sitelink performance and click segments in Google Ads That every created sitelink was served
Did an AI Overview show the ad? General campaign and documented Top Ads reporting A universally available AI Overview-only impression or conversion segment
Did a dynamic sitelink outperform a manual one? Performance where Google exposes the asset distinction and associated statistics That dynamic and manual assets were always tested under identical traffic conditions
Will a page appear in AI Mode? Indexing and ordinary Search eligibility checks Guaranteed inclusion from schema, an AI file, or one keyword strategy

What commonly goes wrong with AI Mode ads and sitelinks?

Assuming AI Mode is a standalone campaign

Building a plan around a non-existent AI Mode campaign setting leads to incorrect budgets and expectations. Start with an eligible existing campaign, then evaluate the broader results and the assets that Google actually reports.

Treating an ad sitelink as an organic citation

A sitelink is paid inventory attached to an ad. Its placement beside an AI-generated answer does not change its commercial status or make the destination an editorial recommendation.

Repeating destinations

Several sitelinks with nearly identical text or URLs give users no meaningful choice and can violate Google’s requirement against reusing the same link text. Map each sitelink to a distinct task a visitor may want to complete.

Expecting schema to unlock AI placement

There is no special schema type or AI text file that guarantees visibility. Fix crawlability, indexing, internal linking, content usefulness, and page experience first.

Reading tests as permanent features

AI Mode ad formats announced as tests can change in layout, eligibility, labeling, and availability. Record the date, market, device, and campaign conditions when documenting an observation.

What should a practical 2026 setup look like?

Use existing campaigns with strong commercial relevance, provide several distinct sitelinks, and make every destination useful on its own. Keep product, local, and business information current; monitor policy and landing-page status; and judge performance with the reporting fields Google actually exposes.

For planning purposes, separate three questions: whether the campaign can enter the auction, whether the page or asset is eligible, and whether Google chooses to serve it in a particular AI experience. Those are different decisions, and success in one does not guarantee the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Google show my ad inside every AI Overview for a relevant query?

No. An eligible campaign still has to meet commercial-intent, relevance, quality, policy, and auction conditions, and Google decides whether an available layout includes an ad. Device, market, language, query wording, and rollout status can all change the result.

Can I opt out of AI Overview ad placements without stopping Search ads?

The cited documentation does not describe a universal AI Overview-only placement switch. Advertisers should review the current campaign controls and Google’s live help documentation for any newly introduced exclusions rather than relying on an assumed setting.

Do sitelinks work with Performance Max campaigns?

Google’s documentation describes sitelinks as available with Search and Performance Max ads, although the asset controls and serving format differ by campaign type. Performance Max sitelinks can be managed in the relevant asset-group or campaign context.

Why did Google create a sitelink I never wrote?

Google can generate dynamic sitelinks from landing pages and other account signals when its systems predict that the additional link will help performance. These assets may appear alongside or instead of manual sitelinks, so review destinations and account controls regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fastest way to check whether my site is eligible for AI features?

Confirm that the target page is crawlable, indexed, and eligible for an ordinary Search snippet, then inspect its internal links, visible content, and page experience. Meeting those conditions makes the page eligible for consideration but does not guarantee selection in an AI-generated answer.
