Those are three different access routes, with different settings. Connected Apps can provide information or let Gemini perform supported tasks; Google app permissions govern device features such as the microphone or location; and screen automation can read and operate a particular app’s screen. The details below describe Google Gemini on Android, not every Android AI assistant, and availability can vary by account, device, language, and feature.
How Gemini can interact with Android apps
Gemini’s app access is not one blanket permission. Consider the request you want it to handle and the route it uses: a service connection, a device feature, or an app’s visible interface.

Connected Apps are not universal access to every app on the phone. Google’s examples are supported use cases, and the connections and actions available depend on settings and account context. With permission, Gemini may also edit or manage content in some apps.
What information may be involved
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says information handled by Gemini can include prompts and spoken requests, files or photos the user uploads, screen or page content explicitly shared with Gemini, responses, information from Connected Apps and other Google services, device and app information, data available through system permissions, and interaction logs. That describes Google’s service; it does not replace the policies of third-party apps.

When Gemini uses connected services
To complete a request, Google says Gemini may share necessary information with the connected service. This can include chat and device-preference information, location, and connected content such as emails, files, calendar events, photos, or videos. The service receiving the information processes it under its own privacy policy and terms. Google’s privacy notice explains the stated data flows.
Location
Google says Gemini uses location to make responses relevant. By default, it may use a general area derived from an IP address or Home/Work addresses saved in the Google Account. With device permission, it may process precise location; it may also receive precise location from another Google service even if precise location is off for the Google app. Google says permitted precise location from the device or browser is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity, and location stored with that activity is coarsened to a general area. A location can still appear in a prompt or response saved in a chat.

How to review and limit access
Use the control that matches the kind of access you want to change. Disconnecting a service does not change Android permissions, and changing Android permissions does not set screen automation or erase activity.
- Disconnect a service: Open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and disconnect any service you do not want Gemini to use. The available connections depend on account context. On personal accounts, Google says Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Device assistance remain available with Keep Activity off, while other integrations such as Google Workspace are unavailable in that state. Work or school accounts have different guidance and limitations. Connected Apps help.
- Review device permissions: On Android, open Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions (wording can vary by device) and review access such as microphone, camera, contacts, and location. Google identifies these as Google app permissions because Gemini is hosted by the Google app on Android. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
- Set screen automation by app: In Gemini’s screen automation settings, choose Always allow, Ask every time, or Do not allow for each app. You can change the setting later. Screen automation help.
- Manage Gemini activity: Review or delete Gemini Apps Activity, change its auto-delete period, and control whether activity is used to improve Google AI. These settings affect Gemini interactions; they do not automatically change separate Google controls such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Privacy Hub.
What activity settings do—and do not—change
Gemini Apps Activity is the relevant activity record when Gemini and Assistant work together inside the Gemini mobile app, if Keep Activity is on. When Google Assistant powers features or devices outside that app, activity is saved in Web & App Activity if that separate setting is on. Changing Keep Activity does not turn off every Google activity setting.

Google says Gemini data may be used to provide, maintain, improve, develop, and personalize services. In particular, when Keep Activity is on, a photo or video shared from a connected gallery, through a screen action, or by upload may be used to improve services with human reviewers. Turning off or deleting activity should not be read as proof that information was never processed; check the notice for the specific data and controls.
Is Gemini listening when you are not talking to it?
Google says Assistant waits in standby for an activation phrase and does not send what the user says while in standby. After detecting activation and Voice Match, it sends the request to Google’s servers. A sound that resembles the activation phrase can trigger an unintended activation. Google says that if Keep Activity is on, an unintended activation is stored and treated like a normal activation; with Keep Activity off, that interaction is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity. This describes Google’s stated behavior for the assistant, not a claim about every Android assistant.

What to expect from screen automation
Google documents screen automation as beta. Before granting ongoing permission to an app, consider whether you would rather be asked for each task or deny screen access there. During a task, Gemini offers ways to inspect or interrupt its work:
- Choose View progress to see the on-device virtual phone environment and the actions in progress.
- Tap Take control to intervene.
- Stop the task if the actions are not what you intended.
Google warns that automation can make mistakes or produce unexpected results, including purchases, and says users are responsible for its actions. Separately, Google’s security post says purchase confirmation is built into its design. Treat that as Google’s stated safeguard, not a guarantee that errors cannot occur. Google’s May 12, 2026 security post also describes its broader security approach and planned or rolling-out controls; those statements are not independent verification or proof that every feature is available on every device.

Where Gemini and Google Assistant overlap
Gemini and Google Assistant can both be involved on Android. Google documents some familiar quick voice actions through Assistant and notes that some Assistant features are not supported in Gemini. Which one handles a request depends on the feature, account, language, and device. Activity may therefore be governed by Gemini Apps Activity inside the Gemini app or by Web & App Activity when Assistant powers something outside it.
