An AI-native SIEM can improve the economics of a breach by helping a security team detect intruders sooner, focus on the alerts that matter, and speed up investigation and containment. It does not guarantee lower breach costs: the return depends on telemetry coverage, workflow design, staffing, and whether measured improvements outweigh the platform’s full operating cost. The central business question is not whether AI is included, but whether it measurably shortens the time from compromise to effective response.
What is cyber dwell time, and why does it affect breach costs?
Cyber dwell time is the period an intruder remains inside an organization’s environment before the organization detects the intrusion. A longer period gives an attacker more opportunity to find valuable identities and systems, increase privileges, move between endpoints and cloud services, stage or steal data, disrupt operations, or interfere with recovery.
The relationship between time and loss is not a simple daily fee. An attacker may spend days gathering access and then cause a sudden, consequential change: exfiltrating data, encrypting systems, disabling backups, or disrupting a critical service. That makes dwell time an economic variable, but not a reliable stand-alone forecast of the eventual bill.
What recent incident data says about time
Google Cloud’s 2026 reporting on Mandiant investigations puts global median dwell time at 14 days in 2025, up from 11 days in the prior reporting period. A median is the midpoint of the reported cases, not a promise that any organization will have 14 days to respond or a measure of the cost of a breach.

The other side of the timeline can be much faster. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 reported in 2025 that nearly one in five cases covered in its report had data exfiltration within the first hour of compromise. It also reported that 86% of incidents it handled in 2024 involved business disruption. These are provider-reported case findings, not universal rates for all organizations or a prediction of an individual company’s risk.
Why the cost curve can be nonlinear
Exposure can compound as an attacker discovers identity relationships, moves across cloud and endpoint environments, and prepares data or systems for impact. Mandiant describes adversaries targeting backups, identity services, and virtualization layers to obstruct recovery. Unit 42 identifies complexity, visibility gaps, and excessive trust as factors that enable attacks, and recommends consolidated visibility across on-premises, cloud, and endpoint logs alongside automated detection and remediation.
Attackers may also move quickly between stages or groups. Mandiant describes hand-offs between access brokers and secondary groups occurring in less than 30 seconds. That is a reported example of adversary speed, not a typical dwell-time measurement. The practical implication is that a long median detection timeline does not mean defenders can safely wait: an incident can reach a damaging stage well before detection.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How much does a day of undetected breach cost?
There is no defensible universal dollar figure for one day of undetected access in the evidence available here. The cost depends on what the attacker can reach, how quickly the attacker acts, the organization’s ability to contain the incident, and the operational and recovery consequences. An extra day can add little in one incident and be decisive in another.
Instead of multiplying days by an assumed daily price, estimate the expected loss under your own baseline and compare it with the expected loss after a control change. A practical model is:

Expected loss avoided = (baseline incident probability × expected impact) − (post-control incident probability × expected impact).
Then include operational savings and all new costs:
- Add potential labor savings: fewer low-value alerts to review and less analyst time spent on repetitive investigation.
- Subtract total cost of ownership: licensing, telemetry ingestion, storage, compute, integrations, model governance, training, and change management.
- Track uncertainty: keep assumptions about incident probability and impact visible, and distinguish provider-reported metrics from outcomes measured in your environment.
This model does not make uncertain probabilities precise. It makes the assumptions inspectable, so leaders can test whether a proposed reduction in response time is large enough to justify the platform and operating changes.
What does an AI-native SIEM change in the response loop?
A SIEM collects and analyzes security events from an organization’s systems. An AI-native SIEM aims to apply AI and machine-learning capabilities across the process of detecting and responding to threats. Its economic value depends on improving the full detection-to-containment loop—not merely generating more alerts or adding a conversational interface.
1. Coverage: give detections a usable view of the environment
Detection depends on the signals available to the system. Relevant sources can include identity, endpoint, cloud, network, SaaS, and infrastructure telemetry. Missing or inconsistent logs create blind spots; AI cannot reliably correlate activity it never receives. Map the systems and identities that matter first, then verify that their events are actually ingested and usable.

2. Correlation and prioritization: connect activity into an incident
Related events may look unimportant in isolation. Correlation can connect those signals into a more coherent incident narrative, while prioritization can account for asset criticality and likely blast radius. The intended benefit is not just a shorter alert queue; it is a better chance that an analyst notices and acts on the activity with the greatest potential consequences.
3. Analyst productivity: reduce repetitive triage without hiding evidence
AI-assisted workflows can summarize evidence, suggest follow-up queries, and help with repetitive investigation. These features may reduce time spent on low-value alerts, a relevant concern for teams facing false-positive volume. Analysts still need access to the underlying evidence and a way to check the system’s reasoning; a fluent summary is not itself proof that a detection is correct.
4. Response automation: make speed conditional on safe controls
Playbooks can automate actions such as disabling an account, revoking a token, isolating an endpoint, or blocking network traffic. Automation may reduce the delay between confirming a threat and containing it, but an incorrect action can interrupt legitimate work. Begin with recommendations, then permit only tested actions, with human approval where the potential harm or uncertainty warrants it.
5. Measurement: test whether the loop improved
Compare performance before and after deployment using the same definitions and comparable incident types. Useful measures include mean time to detect (MTTD), mean time to respond (MTTR), dwell-time proxies, containment time, false-positive rate, telemetry coverage, analyst hours, and incident impact. A tool’s output or a vendor’s benchmark is not a substitute for this before-and-after measurement.
Unit 42’s 2024 report offers an example of a provider-specific internal benchmark: its SOC said it processed 36 billion events daily, reduced them to eight events requiring manual analysis, and achieved 10-second MTTD and one-minute MTTR for high-priority alerts. Those figures describe that provider’s reported operations and alert scope; they are not a general industry target or an expected result for a buyer.

Does AI-native SIEM reduce MTTD and MTTR?
It can, if it closes meaningful visibility gaps, improves prioritization, supports efficient investigation, and enables safe response. The available evidence does not establish a vendor-neutral causal finding that AI-native SIEM adoption produces a fixed percentage reduction in dwell time, MTTD, or MTTR. Treat improvement as a hypothesis to validate in a pilot, not a guaranteed product outcome.
Adoption figures show why implementation matters. SANS’s 2025 Detection and Response survey found that 73% of respondents cited false positives as their leading detection challenge, 90% used automated detection tools, and 76% planned to expand AI/ML use; 28% described budgets as insufficient. In SANS’s 2026 SOC survey of 444 practitioners and 69 cyber leaders, 79% of SOCs reported using AI or ML tools, but only 36% had integrated AI into a defined SOC workflow. The same survey found that 32% said management prioritizes SOC staffing.
These findings distinguish tool adoption from operational maturity. A model may be available while alert ownership, approval rules, escalation paths, training, and response procedures remain undefined. If those pieces are absent, automation can shift work rather than remove it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should an organization evaluate whether AI SIEM is worth the cost?
Evaluate the change against your own baseline and full operating cost. Start with a 90-day baseline, use bounded use cases for a pilot, and reassess both security outcomes and labor costs rather than assuming that a high event-processing capacity translates into a business benefit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Establish a 90-day baseline. Record MTTD, MTTR, dwell-time proxies, alert volume, false positives, telemetry coverage, and analyst hours. Document how each measure is defined so the post-deployment comparison is meaningful.
- Map high-value assets and identity paths. Identify critical systems, important identities, and routes an attacker could use to reach them. Close material logging gaps before expanding AI features; adding analysis to incomplete telemetry does not establish coverage.
- Pilot bounded use cases. Choose a manageable set such as credential theft, cloud privilege escalation, or ransomware precursor behavior. Record which detections are useful, which miss relevant activity, how much analyst work they require, and whether the signals are available across the necessary systems.
- Introduce response cautiously. Run automated actions in recommendation mode first. Authorize only playbooks tested through tabletop exercises and adversary simulation, and set approval requirements appropriate to each action’s potential impact.
- Recalculate quarterly. Compare measured changes in detection, response, containment, incident impact, and analyst effort with licensing and operating costs. Keep vendor-reported examples separate from results observed in your own environment.
What should buyers compare between SIEM approaches?
Compare operating capabilities and the cost of using them, not just feature names. The following questions help expose trade-offs that can be obscured by a headline claim about AI:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Telemetry and retention: Which identity, endpoint, cloud, network, SaaS, and infrastructure sources are covered? What do ingestion and data retention cost as volume changes?
- Detection quality and latency: How quickly can the system identify relevant activity, and how well does it correlate weak signals into an incident? How are false positives and false negatives reviewed?
- Workflow and explainability: Does the system fit existing analyst workflows? Can an analyst inspect the evidence behind a summary or recommendation?
- Response controls: Which playbooks are available? Can the organization set approvals, test actions, and roll back changes when an automated response causes a problem?
- Coverage of risky layers: How are cloud, identity, endpoints, and virtualization represented? Can the buyer verify that important activity is visible across those areas?
- People and operating effort: What staffing, training, integration, and model-governance work is required to use the system effectively?
- Exit and migration: What are the contract terms, data-egress implications, and migration risks if the organization later changes tools?
- Measured outcomes: Can the supplier support a pilot that tests changes in MTTD, MTTR, dwell time, containment time, false positives, coverage, and incident impact against a documented baseline?
What are the main limitations of the business case?
The evidence supports the importance of detection speed, the prevalence of false-positive concerns, and examples of advanced SOC performance. It does not supply a universal price per day of breach, a vendor-neutral percentage reduction attributable to AI-native SIEM, or a general payback period. Those limits make a measured business case more important, not less.
Benchmarks can still help frame a discussion, provided their scope stays attached to them. A global median from Mandiant investigations, survey responses from SANS participants, and one provider’s internal SOC metrics describe different things. None alone establishes what a particular organization will achieve or save.
Finally, faster detection is only one part of resilience. A team must have enough visibility to see the activity, enough process clarity to act on it, and response controls that reduce risk without creating unnecessary disruption. Mandiant’s call to move at the speed of the adversary is an operational challenge, not a license to automate every decision without validation.

Can a SIEM tell us exactly when an attacker first got in?
Not necessarily. Detection depends on what logs were collected, retained, and available for analysis, so an investigation may establish when activity was first observed without proving the exact initial compromise time.
Is a high MTTD improvement enough to prove the investment paid off?
No. A faster detection metric does not by itself show that incidents were contained sooner, that business impact fell, or that savings exceeded total operating costs. Pair timing measures with containment, incident impact, analyst effort, and cost.
Should we automate account disablement and endpoint isolation immediately?
No. First validate the recommendations and playbooks in recommendation mode, then test actions through exercises. Approval should reflect how disruptive an action could be if triggered incorrectly.
Do the SANS adoption figures mean most SOCs have mature AI workflows?
No. In SANS’s 2026 survey, 79% of SOCs reported using AI or ML tools, while 36% reported integrating AI into a defined SOC workflow. Those are distinct measures of tool use and workflow integration.
