A close selfie can make your nose look larger and your face look different because the camera is much nearer to some features than others. That is mainly a perspective effect, not simply a flaw in a wide-angle lens. Wide-angle images can also stretch faces near the frame edges, a separate effect that is often reduced by moving farther away, keeping faces near the center, or reframing the shot.
Why a close selfie changes facial proportions
Your face is three-dimensional: the nose is usually closer to the camera than the ears and sides of the face. From a very short shooting distance, that difference in distance is a large proportion of the camera-to-face distance. Nearer features therefore appear larger relative to features farther away, making the nose seem more prominent.
Ricoh Imaging warns that taking portraits from a short distance with a short focal length can produce a “larger-than-life nose” and facial lines that differ from reality. Its portrait guidance also notes that faces toward the edge of a wide-angle image can look distorted.
Does facial distortion depend on focal length or camera distance?
For the familiar close-selfie change in facial proportions, camera distance is the key factor. Focal length determines how much of the scene fits in the frame and how large the subject appears in that frame. If you change focal length while keeping the camera in the same position, you change framing, but not the perspective created by that position.

In practice, a wider view often makes it possible to include the whole face while holding the camera close. A longer focal length narrows the view, so a photographer commonly steps farther back to keep a similar-sized portrait in the frame. It is that move backward—not the longer focal length by itself—that changes perspective. Three effects often called “lens distortion”
Perspective distortion from close distance
This is the relative size difference between facial features at different distances from the camera. It is most noticeable when the camera is close, and it changes if you move the camera farther away.

Optical lens distortion
Barrel or pincushion distortion describes optical mapping errors that bend image geometry—for example, straight lines may bow outward or inward. This is not the same as a close camera position making a nose appear larger relative to the ears.
Wide-angle stretching near the frame edges
A wide-angle image can stretch a face placed near a corner or edge, even when the lens renders straight lines as straight. This comes from how a three-dimensional scene is projected onto a flat image; it is distinct from both close-distance perspective and optical line-bending. ZEISS explains that wide-angle projection involves tradeoffs and that correcting optical distortion does not remove every projection effect. See its technical discussion of distortion and projection.

How to make a face look more natural in a photo
Move the camera farther away
For a phone selfie, increase the distance between the phone and your face if you can. Then crop the image or adjust the view to get the composition you want. More distance reduces the relative size exaggeration caused by nearby features.
Keep faces near the middle of a wide frame
In a group selfie or any wide shot, place faces closer to the center where possible. People at the edges are more susceptible to wide-angle stretching. Reframing or cropping can help if the face has already been captured near an edge.

Step back and use a longer focal length, if available
With a zoom or interchangeable-lens camera, step back and choose a longer focal length when space allows. Ricoh recommends photographing close-up faces from farther away with a fairly long focal length. There is no single ideal focal length for every face, camera format, room, or desired composition, and buying a longer lens alone does not change perspective if you keep the camera in the same place.

Software can help when you cannot change the camera distance or framing, but it changes image geometry rather than revealing one objectively correct version of a face. A correction may also affect the background, and video correction must contend with consistency from frame to frame.

A 2021 paper by Wei-Sheng Lai, YiChang Shih, Chia-Kai Liang, and Ming-Hsuan Yang describes a face-aware method for correcting wide-angle video, including line preservation and temporal consistency. In the paper’s user study, 83.9% of users preferred the proposed algorithm to comparison alternatives based on perspective projection. That is a study-specific result, not a general preference rate for all correction software. The authors’ work is available as Correcting Face Distortion in Wide-Angle Videos.
Choose capture changes or software correction

Capture changes address the geometry before processing. Software may be useful when those changes are not possible, but the result depends on the image and the correction method.
