Browser game ports work by adapting a game’s code and platform services to the web, or by recreating the older platform the game was built for. WebAssembly can run compiled game code, but it does not draw graphics or provide browser features by itself: JavaScript and browser APIs connect it to graphics, controls, audio, storage, and networking. WebGL handles graphics access. In an emulator, the game instead runs inside a software model of its original system.
What a browser game port has to do
A desktop or console game expects an environment: a processor, graphics hardware, input devices, audio output, files, and operating-system services. A browser game must provide equivalents using the facilities browsers expose. That means moving more than the game’s main loop. Rendering, sound, controller input, saved data, asset loading, and sometimes networking all need to fit browser rules.
There are two broad approaches. A direct port adapts or recompiles the game’s own code so it can run in a browser. An emulator recreates enough of the original computer or console environment for the game software to run as it did there. These approaches can overlap: an emulator can itself be compiled to WebAssembly. The distinction is what the software is recreating, not which file format it uses.

WebAssembly, often shortened to Wasm, is a low-level binary format browsers can execute. Developers compile code written in a language such as C or C++ into Wasm; Rust can also target Wasm. The browser downloads and starts the module, commonly with JavaScript handling the surrounding integration.

Wasm is designed to work alongside JavaScript, not replace it. It does not directly manipulate the page’s DOM, draw to the screen, or define a universal set of operating-system calls. Instead, a module uses imports to request functions supplied by its host. In a browser, those functions ultimately connect the game to browser APIs. WebAssembly.org’s portability documentation describes this host-defined model: Wasm specifies an import mechanism, while the host determines which imports are available.
This separation matters because a Wasm module is not a self-contained browser, operating system, or graphics driver. It can run compiled game logic, but it needs an integration layer to reach browser capabilities. Two Wasm games can therefore differ substantially in their APIs, supported features, and behavior across devices.
How a direct port connects game code to the browser
Compile the game and supply a runtime layer
For C and C++ games, Emscripten is a toolchain that can compile code through Clang/LLVM and produce a Wasm module along with JavaScript glue and an HTML shell. The generated JavaScript helps load and run the module and connects supported library operations to browser facilities. MDN’s WebAssembly concepts documentation, last modified October 7, 2026, describes this kind of C/C++ workflow and Emscripten’s role.

Emscripten can provide support for familiar libraries and programming interfaces, including SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL, and parts of POSIX, through browser-facing glue. Its runtime documentation describes SDL support for keyboard, mouse, joystick, audio, and graphics. This can make a port more practical than rewriting every feature from scratch, but it is a compatibility layer—not a guarantee that unchanged native code will work.

Code may still need changes when it depends on unsupported libraries, operating-system calls, timing behavior, graphics features, threads, or unrestricted file access. Where the browser host does not provide the expected behavior, developers may need to replace a dependency, adapt the code, or emulate the missing behavior. Such work can affect compatibility and performance.
Connect the game’s drawing code to WebGL
WebGL is the browser-facing graphics API used to create hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D graphics. It exposes graphics capabilities through a browser canvas and is based on OpenGL ES. The game’s code may run in Wasm, but the browser’s graphics API—not WebAssembly itself—provides the route to drawing on screen.
How much graphics work a port needs depends on the original game and renderer. Some code and libraries can be adapted through a toolchain; other games need renderer changes, shader adjustments, a compatibility layer, or converted assets. Native graphics calls do not all automatically map to WebGL, and support for particular features can vary by browser and device.

Texture formats are one practical complication. Emscripten’s deployment guidance notes that compressed texture support differs across visitor hardware. A game may need multiple texture variants and select an appropriate one after checking the capabilities reported by the WebGL context. Shipping only a format a visitor’s device cannot use can prevent assets from loading correctly or require a fallback.

Replace platform services with browser services
A native game can often assume it can read files, save to a local directory, play audio, and poll input through its operating system. A browser port must instead use supported browser interfaces or a runtime layer that adapts those operations.
- Input: Keyboard and mouse input are available through browser facilities; touch controls can suit mobile interfaces. A game can also implement the Gamepad API for compatible physical controllers, but a controller is optional, not a requirement of Wasm or WebGL.
- Audio: Browser audio is available through Web Audio. A port’s audio library or runtime needs to connect the game’s sound output to that browser service.
- Saved data: IndexedDB can store persistent data in the browser. The game must use a storage approach that preserves saves beyond the current page session.
- Networking: WebSockets or WebRTC can support browser networking, depending on the game’s needs and implementation.
- Immersive controls: Fullscreen and pointer lock can support suitable games that need a larger play area or captured mouse movement.
File access is a particularly visible difference. Browser code cannot freely read a visitor’s host files as a native program might. Emscripten can provide a virtual file system and package game files for the application. Its default in-memory file system loses changes on reload; IDBFS can persist files in browser storage. A port therefore needs to distinguish bundled game assets from player-created or saved data and configure persistence where needed.
How emulation runs an older game
An emulator models the hardware or software platform expected by a game: for example, its processor behavior, memory, graphics, sound, and input. The old game then runs against that modeled environment rather than being reworked directly to call browser APIs. WebAssembly.org lists platform simulation and emulation as Wasm use cases, with DOSBox, QEMU, and MAME as examples.

It needs a way to display frames, accept keyboard or gamepad input, produce audio, load game files, and preserve any data the player saves. The emulator program can be compiled to Wasm, with JavaScript and browser APIs handling host integration. In other words, “emulated” does not mean “not using WebAssembly”; emulation describes the software’s job, while Wasm describes one possible way to execute it.

An emulator must also support the particular platform behavior and game well enough to be useful. A game that relies on hardware details or system functions the emulator does not reproduce may not run correctly. This makes compatibility a question of both the emulator’s coverage and the browser port’s integration—not a universal property of emulation.
Direct port or emulation: how to tell the difference
| Question | Direct port | Emulation |
|---|---|---|
| What is being adapted? | The game’s code and dependencies are compiled or changed for browser use. | A software model recreates the platform the game expected. |
| What is the main compatibility challenge? | Making the code, libraries, graphics, files, and other services work with browser APIs. | Reproducing enough of the target system and supporting the game’s platform-specific behavior. |
| How does it reach browser features? | Through JavaScript, browser APIs, and any runtime or compatibility layers used by the port. | The emulator itself connects its modeled system to browser graphics, input, audio, storage, and loading. |
| What determines startup and asset behavior? | The size and loading strategy of the game code and assets. | The emulator, the game data, and the loading strategy used by the browser application. |
| Which approach is faster or more compatible? | There is no universal winner established by the cited documentation; results depend on the game, implementation, browser, device, and required platform behavior. | |
A direct port may be a natural fit when the source code and dependencies can be adapted to the web. Emulation can be useful when reproducing the original platform is more practical than changing the game itself, provided the emulator supports the needed behavior. Neither label guarantees that a game will start faster, run more smoothly, or work on every device.

Before play begins, the browser may need to fetch the page, Wasm code, and game assets. If a port preloads a large package before starting, that download can delay the first playable screen. Emscripten’s deployment guidance recommends minimizing files that must be preloaded and splitting content into packages that can load asynchronously. This allows an application to avoid waiting for every asset when not all content is needed immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPerformance is also shaped by graphics work, asset formats, browser support, and the cost of adapting unsupported behavior. WebAssembly is designed for efficient execution, but that is not evidence that every Wasm game runs “like native” or that it is always faster than another implementation. The result depends on the game and the specific browser and device. A single universal speed figure would not describe all ports.

- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
For players, a slow initial load and slow gameplay are different problems. A large asset package can delay startup even if the game runs well after loading. Conversely, a game can load quickly but struggle during play because of rendering demands, compatibility work, or the limits of the visitor’s device. Texture variants and asynchronous asset loading address particular bottlenecks; neither guarantees a given frame rate.
What players need to use a browser port
At the player end, a port is usually presented as a web page. The browser downloads its code and assets, initializes the runtime, and connects the game to available input and output services. The exact requirements depend on the game; the underlying technologies do not make one set of hardware requirements apply to every title.
- Use a browser and device that support the features the particular game requires. The documentation cited here explains the technologies but does not establish a current browser-by-browser support matrix.
- Use keyboard, mouse, or touch if those controls are offered. A physical controller is useful only when the game implements gamepad input and the controller works with the device.
- Allow time for downloads, especially when a game loads substantial code or assets before play. A long initial wait does not, by itself, show how well it will run once started.
- Expect saves and local data to follow browser storage behavior. A page’s in-memory state may disappear when it reloads; persistent saving requires a storage mechanism configured by the port.
What developers should check when building a port
The key engineering decision is not simply “Wasm or WebGL.” They serve different roles: Wasm can execute compiled code, while WebGL exposes browser graphics. A project must also decide how its libraries, input, audio, saved data, networking, and content loading will cross the browser boundary.
- Choose the adaptation route. Determine whether the game’s own code and dependencies can be compiled or changed for the browser, or whether modeling its original platform is a better fit. A source-code port and an emulator may both use Wasm.
- Inventory platform assumptions. Identify system calls, libraries, file access, timing, graphics features, and other dependencies that may not be available in the browser. Decide which Emscripten or other compatibility support covers them and where code changes are necessary.
- Map the user-facing services. Connect rendering to WebGL, audio to browser audio facilities, and controls to keyboard, mouse, touch, or optionally the Gamepad API. Plan how persistent data will use browser storage.
- Plan content delivery. Avoid making every asset a prerequisite for the first playable screen when content can be split and loaded asynchronously. Prepare texture alternatives if target hardware may not support one compressed format.
- Test the actual host combinations. Check the browsers and devices the game intends to support, including graphics capabilities and input options. Wasm imports are host-defined, so a successful run in one environment does not establish identical support everywhere.
Emscripten runtime and deployment documentation surfaced in versions labeled 6.0.13-git and 6.0.11-git, respectively. Those labels identify the documentation versions available for those pages, not a guarantee about a particular browser’s support. WebAssembly.org’s portability and use-case pages explain the host and emulation concepts but do not provide a browser-by-browser compatibility matrix.
