Apple uses data and analytics to operate and improve specific products and services, including device diagnostics, Siri and Dictation, Maps, App Store reporting, and Apple Intelligence. The details depend on the feature and your settings: some processing happens on your device, some information goes to Apple’s servers, and some developer reports use aggregated data. Apple describes measures such as data minimization, encryption, aggregation, and user controls, but its practices are not one uniform company-wide process.
What “big data” means in Apple’s services
In this context, “big data” is best understood as data used across particular features and services—not as a claim that Apple collects every user’s activity into one identifiable record. Data may be processed on a device to provide a feature, sent to Apple to fulfill a request, or used in aggregated reporting to identify broader patterns.
Apple says it processes personal data on-device whenever possible and minimizes information sent when a service needs personal data. It gives image and scene recognition in Photos and predictive text as examples of on-device processing. These examples illustrate an approach, not a guarantee that every part of every Apple service stays on the device.
Device analytics and product improvement
Device analytics is a user-controlled way to share information that Apple says can help it understand product performance and improve its services. Apple’s policy says some usage information from multiple devices on the same iCloud account may be correlated when users opt in on those devices. Apple says it uses end-to-end encryption for this correlation.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That qualification matters: it would be inaccurate to say that analytics data can never be connected across devices. It would also be inaccurate to describe this opt-in channel as a complete, continuously identifiable record of everything a person does. The policy describes a particular source of product-improvement data and a specific condition for correlating some usage information.
What happens to Siri and Dictation data
Ordinary requests
Siri and Dictation handling depends on the feature and whether the device can process the request locally. Apple says audio is processed on-device whenever possible. When it is not, audio may be sent to Apple servers for processing. The device indicates whether the audio is processed on-device; Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless the user opts in to the separate improvement program.

Opting in to improvement
Under the separate “Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence” setting, Apple may store audio, transcripts, responses, and related request information to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Search, and language-processing features. Apple says this information is not associated with the user’s Apple Account. It uses a rotating, device-generated identifier, and may retain the information for up to two years; a small subset reviewed for quality may be kept longer. This stated retention period concerns data shared through that opt-in program, not all Siri requests.

In a disclosure dated September 9, 2026, Apple said users who opt in to share Device Analytics may contribute privacy-preserving information about aggregated trends, including trends involving content processed by Apple Intelligence. This is distinct from Apple’s description of the sources used to build generative-AI datasets. It does not establish that all user prompts are used to train models.

How Apple uses data in Maps
Maps shows why “Apple keeps all data on your device” is too broad. Apple says features including Visited Places, Parked Car, and suggestions are generated using data created on the device. For preferred and predicted route suggestions, however, route geometry is sent to Apple. Apple says that within 24 hours it takes steps to ensure it does not learn that a route was a preferred or predicted destination.
Apple also describes Maps ads as contextual. They may use search terms and the map view; if the user permits it, they may also use approximate device location. This account of ad context should not be mistaken for a statement that every Apple service uses the same data or advertising method.

What developers can see in App Store analytics
Apple provides developers reports on activity such as app sessions, downloads, and purchases. Some reports aggregate data and use thresholds or small amounts of random noise. The safeguards vary by report, so these figures should not be generalized to every Apple dataset.

Apple’s developer guidance also covers Privacy Nutrition Labels, privacy manifests, App Tracking Transparency, and App Privacy Report. These mechanisms can help users understand or control data practices by apps in Apple’s ecosystem. An app’s disclosures describe that app and its software development kits; they do not, by themselves, describe Apple’s own data collection.

What Apple says it uses to build generative-AI datasets
Apple’s September 9, 2026 disclosure describes several sources for data used in generative-AI systems and services:
- Public web information crawled by Applebot.
- Third-party material that Apple licenses or purchases.
- Open-source data.
- Data from user studies.
- Synthetic data.
Apple says it first used text data for generative-AI systems and services in 2018 and image data in 2020. These are dates Apple gives for those uses; they do not quantify how much data was used or establish the sources for every model or service.
What users can and cannot conclude
Controls and feature-specific choices
Relevant choices differ by service. Device analytics sharing is opt-in. Siri’s improvement program is a separate opt-in from ordinary Siri use. Maps behavior can depend on whether location permission is granted. For any particular feature, the applicable privacy policy and settings are more useful than a blanket assumption about how Apple handles data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple’s statements and independent verification
Apple’s privacy, legal, and developer pages are primary sources for the practices it says it follows. They are not independent audits of how those systems work or how effective each safeguard is. Apple’s official privacy page states, “At Apple, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right.” That is Apple’s institutional position, not an independent finding.
The available information does not establish a single Apple-wide “big data” platform or an independently validated total for how much user data Apple collects or processes. It supports a more specific picture: different services use different data, processing locations, permissions, identifiers, and protections.
