A magnetically actuated hair array can make water droplets rebound, travel sideways, or break into smaller droplets instead of remaining on a cold surface. By shortening the time liquid water touches the surface, the structure could reduce the chance of droplets freezing in place. A 2018 ACS Nano study demonstrated the three motions in the laboratory, but it did not establish outdoor performance or commercial deployment.

What the anti-icing hair array is

The device described by Sang-Hyeon Lee, Minho Seong, Moon Kyu Kwak, Hyunwook Ko, Minsu Kang, Hyung Wook Park, Seong Min Kang and Hoon Eui Jeong is a hierarchical array of magnetically responsive hairs. The paper was published online on September 28, 2018, in volume 12, issue 11 of ACS Nano, pages 10693–10702.

Each hair is tapered and contains structure that responds to an external magnetic field. Applying the field bends the array quickly; removing or changing the field lets it return, making the movement immediate and reversible. The hairs also have roughness at multiple scales. That combination of tapering and multiscale texture helps the surface remain superhydrophobic when the array is upright or tilted, rather than working only in one fixed orientation.

The array is not simply a passive water-repellent coating. Its geometry can be switched between distinct physical states, and each state changes what happens when a droplet lands:

  • Upright hairs: a droplet can make a quasi-pancake bounce, spreading and recoiling with very little time in contact with the tips.
  • A tilted array: the same water-repellent behavior becomes directional, sending the droplet away from the impact point.
  • A fully bent array: the larger-scale texture can split an incoming droplet into fragments, which are then easier to shed.

These are mechanical effects. The array does not need to heat each droplet, dissolve ice with a chemical, or scrape a frozen layer away after it forms.

How the three bouncing modes work

Quasi-pancake bouncing with upright hairs

On a conventional surface, an impacting droplet normally flattens, recoils and may remain attached for a measurable interval. On the upright hair state, the tapered, rough, low-wetting tips support a different impact sequence. The droplet spreads across the top of the array, then contracts and leaves in a flattened, pancake-like shape. Because adhesion is low and the rebound is rapid, the droplet spends less time touching the cold solid beneath it.

“Quasi-pancake” describes the shape and timing of the rebound, not a claim that every drop has identical dimensions. The useful feature for icing control is the short residence time: the liquid has less opportunity to nucleate ice at the interface before it departs.

Directional bouncing with a tilted array

Tilting the hair array gives the droplet an intentional horizontal component of motion. Instead of returning close to its landing point, the drop rebounds along the tilt direction. This matters on inclined or vertical equipment because gravity and the magnetic state can work together to move water toward an edge or a collection path.

The multiscale roughness is important here. A surface that is superhydrophobic only when level could lose its repellency after installation. The tapered hairs and hierarchical texture are intended to preserve water shedding as the angle changes, allowing the same concept to operate on differently oriented sections of equipment.

Fragmentation when the array is fully bent

At the fully bent setting, the array’s macrotexture interferes with the droplet as a whole. Instead of one large drop remaining intact, the impact can produce several smaller fragments. Smaller drops have less mass and can be carried away more readily by gravity, airflow or the slope of the host surface.

Fragmentation is not automatically better in every environment. A fragment that remains trapped in a recess could still freeze. The anti-icing benefit therefore depends on the fragments leaving the surface quickly, which is one reason outdoor drainage, wind and texture design would need to be evaluated separately from the laboratory demonstration.

Why bouncing droplets can delay ice

Ice formation requires a droplet to remain liquid long enough for freezing to begin and for the ice to anchor to the surface. A drop that rebounds, travels away or breaks apart has a shorter contact interval than one sitting on a conventional coating. The concept is therefore to prevent initial attachment and accumulation, not to melt a thick ice layer after it has formed.

This distinction explains why the array could complement, rather than simply replace, established anti-icing methods. Joule-heating systems supply heat to keep a surface above freezing, while chemical systems lower the freezing point or interfere with adhesion. The hair array attempts to manage the liquid mechanically. If the drop leaves before freezing, less ice is available to act as a foundation for later deposits.

The laboratory results do not establish a universal freezing threshold. Whether a drop departs in time depends on surface temperature, drop size, impact speed, humidity, airflow and the current hair configuration. In severe cold, a drop could freeze during impact or before it reaches a safe shedding path.

How the controllable surface would be operated

The demonstrated concept can be understood as a three-state operating sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the array upright. Use the magnetic field to place the hairs in the upright configuration when the priority is rapid, nearly vertical rebound from incoming spray or rain.
  2. Introduce a tilt. Change the field so the array leans in the direction where water should travel. Droplets then rebound directionally rather than returning to the impact point.
  3. Bend the array fully when fragmentation is useful. A larger bend engages the macrotexture and can divide a drop into smaller pieces that are easier to remove.
  4. Return or switch states as conditions change. Because actuation is reversible, the structure can be moved back without permanently deforming the hairs. The published work demonstrates repeated actuation, but it does not define a field-control algorithm for a deployed installation.

In a real installation, a controller would also have to decide when to change state. The paper does not provide a finished sensor package, weather-control protocol or field controller, so those are engineering tasks rather than demonstrated features.

Potential uses on energy and outdoor infrastructure

Lead researcher Hoon Eui Jeong identified energy facilities as the main target, specifically powerlines, solar-cell surfaces and windmills. Chemistry World also mentioned roads and buildings as possible iced structures. The intended advantage differs by application:

Surface Why short contact time could help What remains unproven
Powerlines Rebounding or directional droplets could reduce the liquid that freezes onto exposed conductors and hardware. Performance under wind-driven precipitation, vibration, electrical-clearance requirements and long outdoor exposure was not established.
Solar-cell surfaces Shedding water quickly could limit ice and preserve more of the active surface during freezing weather. The effect on optical transmission, cleaning, hail resistance and repeated weather cycles was not reported.
Wind-turbine components Directional shedding or fragmentation could reduce accumulation on exposed surfaces where added ice affects operation. Blade-scale manufacturing, aerodynamic balance, erosion and high-speed rain exposure remain open questions.
Roads and buildings Switchable textures could move precipitation away from selected areas before it freezes. Large-area coverage, pedestrian and vehicle safety, drainage design and maintenance economics were not demonstrated.

How it differs from conventional anti-icing approaches

The comparison below uses the practical axes highlighted in the reporting. It separates what the hair concept is designed to do from what has actually been shown.

Approach Energy demand Liquid contact time Orientation and control Main trade-offs
Joule heating Requires electrical energy to raise or maintain surface temperature. Can prevent freezing while heat is supplied; shedding is not the primary mechanism. Heating zones can be controlled, but wiring and power delivery constrain the design. Energy use and operation during outages; the cited report does not give a universal power figure.
Chemical anti-icing Does not primarily rely on electrical heating. Can lower the freezing point or reduce adhesion, depending on the formulation. Usually applied as a coating or treatment rather than switched mechanically. The cited report warns that chemical release can damage surfaces and cause corrosion.
Mechanical removal Energy is used when brushes, scrapers or other equipment operate. Removes ice after accumulation rather than shortening every droplet impact. Requires access, moving hardware or a separate removal operation. Can impose force and wear on the protected surface; no field-life figure was established for the hair array as an alternative.
Static superhydrophobic coating Normally has no active actuation energy. Can shorten residence time, but performance may change with angle, contamination or texture damage. Surface behavior is fixed after manufacture. Cannot switch between upright, tilted and fragmentation modes.
Magnetically actuated hair array Needs an external magnetic field for switching; the study does not state system-level energy consumption. Designed to rebound, redirect or fragment drops, thereby reducing residence time. Immediately and reversibly controllable, with water shedding maintained across different tilt angles in the laboratory. Outdoor durability, condensation and frost performance, scale-up and commercial economics remain unresolved.

What the 2018 demonstration actually established

The primary article established the three controllable droplet outcomes and showed that magnetic actuation could repeatedly change the hair geometry. The ACS supporting information includes a video demonstrating 1,200 repetitive structural-actuation cycles. That is evidence of repeatable laboratory movement, not a service-life rating for a powerline, panel or turbine.

Neither the paper nor the contemporaneous reporting supplies a standalone percentage for ice reduction, a guaranteed freezing-delay time, a field-performance result, or a commercial deployment statistic. Those figures should not be inferred from the bouncing videos. The fairest conclusion is that the architecture offers a plausible physical route to limiting ice accumulation and merits application-specific testing.

Conditions that could limit performance

Condensation and frost

Sushant Anand of the University of Illinois at Chicago cautioned that such materials can work well at room temperature but may not work well at higher temperatures, during condensation or in frost conditions. This warning is important because anti-icing hardware often encounters moisture that forms directly on the surface rather than arriving as a freely falling drop. A condensate film or frost layer may bypass the impact-and-rebound mechanism entirely.

Temperature and freezing rate

A very cold substrate can freeze a drop before it completes its rebound. The article does not define a minimum operating temperature or a maximum freezing rate. Any deployment would need measurements across the expected temperature range instead of assuming that room-temperature superhydrophobicity persists in all weather.

Contamination and wear

Hierarchical roughness is central to the water-shedding effect, so dirt, salt, oil, abrasion or biological growth could reduce performance by filling or damaging the texture. The cited sources do not report a long-term contamination test, a cleaning schedule or a field replacement interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale and actuation hardware

A laboratory array and a square meter of infrastructure pose different manufacturing problems. Engineers would have to produce consistent tapered hairs, distribute magnetic actuation across a large area, protect the mechanism from weather and avoid creating weak points in the host structure. The published work does not provide a manufacturing scale, bill of materials or cost estimate.

What polar-bear fur adds to the biological context

A later Science Advances study of polar-bear fur offers a useful comparison. It linked the fur’s anti-icing behavior to wetting and sebum-related surface properties and noted that delaying freezing gives liquid water more time to shed. That supports the general physical principle behind the hair-array concept: delaying attachment can be as important as changing the equilibrium contact angle.

The polar-bear work is context, not proof that the magnetic array copies bear fur. The engineered array uses externally controlled bending, tapered synthetic hairs and hierarchical roughness; the biological study concerns a living material with its own chemistry and structure.

What would be needed before deployment

A credible field trial would need to answer questions that the 2018 laboratory work leaves open:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How quickly can drops leave at the actual surface temperature and wind speed of the target asset?
  • Does the texture continue to repel water after condensation, frost, salt, dust and repeated cleaning?
  • How many actuation cycles are required over the asset’s expected life, and does performance degrade before the magnetic mechanism fails?
  • Can the array be manufactured over the required area without obstructing solar transmission, changing blade aerodynamics or violating electrical clearances?
  • What happens when a fragmented drop lands nearby and freezes there?
  • How much control energy, sensing and protective hardware does the installation require compared with heating or chemical treatment?

Until those tests are completed, the technology should be described as a laboratory anti-icing concept intended for energy infrastructure, not as a commercially ready replacement for existing systems.

Bottom line

Anti-icing hairs work by controlling the mechanics of a droplet’s contact with a cold surface. Magnetic actuation switches a hierarchical hair array between upright, tilted and fully bent states, producing quasi-pancake bouncing, directional rebound or fragmentation. Those motions can reduce the time available for freezing and may limit ice accumulation without continuous heating or chemical release. The evidence currently supports a promising laboratory mechanism, including 1,200 demonstrated actuation cycles, but not a proven outdoor product, field-performance percentage or guaranteed operation in condensation and frost.
