Artificial intelligence is not directly replacing passwords. It is making phishing and social-engineering attacks faster, cheaper and more convincing, which exposes the weakness of reusable passwords and phishable SMS or email codes. The practical replacement is the passkey: a FIDO credential built from a public/private key pair, with the private key protected on your device or in a credential manager and a site-bound signature checked at sign-in.

Passkeys are already supported by major consumer and business services, but passwords will not vanish on one universal date. The transition is staged. You can start by enabling passkeys on important accounts, keeping a recovery route, and using a reputable password manager for services that still require passwords.

Is AI making passwords obsolete?

AI is increasing the pressure to move beyond passwords, rather than making the password itself technically obsolete. Attackers can use generative tools to produce fluent, personalized messages, clone a company’s tone and rapidly test many lures. Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported click-through rates as high as 54% for AI-enabled phishing campaigns, compared with roughly 12% for traditional campaigns. That comparison is Microsoft’s own reported measurement, not a universal industry benchmark, but it illustrates why familiar password defenses are under strain.

A stolen password is reusable wherever a person has repeated it. A stolen SMS or email code can also be relayed during a live scam. Even conventional push approvals can be abused through approval-spam or social engineering. AI improves the attacker’s odds by making those interactions look legitimate and by increasing campaign scale.

Passkeys change the target. Instead of asking a person to disclose a secret, a service verifies a cryptographic signature produced by an enrolled device or credential manager. There is no password database value for a phishing page to collect, and the credential is bound to the legitimate site origin.

How do passkeys work?

A passkey is a FIDO2 credential that uses public-key cryptography. During enrollment, the service stores a public key. The matching private key remains protected on your phone, computer, hardware security key or passkey manager; the service never receives that private key.

Registration

  1. You choose “Create a passkey” (the wording varies by service) after signing in or adding a new sign-in method.
  2. Your device creates a unique key pair for that service and records the public key with the account.
  3. You approve creation with the device’s screen lock, PIN or biometric check. The biometric normally stays on the device; it is used to unlock the key rather than sent to the website.

Sign-in

  1. The website sends a one-time cryptographic challenge.
  2. Your device or credential manager checks that the request comes from the enrolled site origin.
  3. After local verification, the private key signs the challenge.
  4. The service verifies the signature with the stored public key and grants access.

A look-alike domain cannot use the passkey because the credential is origin-bound. Copying a login form or persuading you to type a password therefore does not give a phishing site a reusable equivalent of the passkey. Microsoft describes the model as a private key held safely by the user and a corresponding public key verified by the service. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says FIDO2 credentials, including passkeys, are more secure than traditional multifactor authentication against common attacks throughout the credential lifecycle.

Are passkeys safer than passwords and codes?

For phishing and credential replay, yes. They are not magic: account recovery, compromised devices, malicious enrollment and services that do not support FIDO2 remain risks. The table shows where each method stands.

Method Phishing resistance What can be stolen Recovery and portability
Password Low; users can be tricked into entering it on a fake site The reusable secret, often useful on other sites Easy to reset, but resets and reuse create attack opportunities
SMS or email code Low; codes can be captured or relayed in real time The one-time code and possibly the account’s recovery channel Works on many phones, but depends on phone number or mailbox security
Conventional push approval Variable; approval-spam and social engineering can defeat it An approval decision rather than a password Usually convenient, but dependent on the registered device
Synced passkey High against origin-level phishing Not a reusable password; access to the synced account or devices remains important Available across a user’s enrolled devices and generally easier to recover
Device-bound FIDO2 key or passkey High against origin-level phishing The physical authenticator, which is harder to copy remotely Strong hardware control, but you need a spare key or another recovery method

NIST’s April 23, 2024 supplement on syncable authenticators recognizes phishing resistance, simpler recovery and cross-device use as benefits of synced credentials. For high-value accounts, a device-bound security key can reduce the consequences of a compromised cloud account, provided the organization or individual has planned replacements.

What evidence shows that passkeys are replacing passwords?

Adoption is measurable, although the figures are survey results rather than a census of all internet users. The FIDO Alliance reported in 2024 that 53% of respondents had enabled a passkey on at least one account. Its 2025 consumer findings reported that 36% had experienced an account compromise through weak or stolen passwords and that 48% had abandoned an online purchase after forgetting a password. In the same year, 87% of surveyed companies in the United States and United Kingdom said they had deployed or were deploying passkeys.

These percentages describe the surveyed populations and dates; they do not mean that 53% of all accounts worldwide use passkeys. They do show that passkeys have moved from an experimental option into mainstream account and enterprise planning.

Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2024 summarized the user benefit this way: “Passkeys perform a simple function. They offer users faster, easier, and most critically, more secure sign-ins to websites and apps across their devices than password-based methods.”

Which type of passkey should you choose?

Synced passkeys

A synced passkey is encrypted and made available through a passkey provider on your trusted devices. It is the most convenient choice for people who use several phones and computers: losing one device does not necessarily lock you out, and a new device can receive the credential after you authenticate to the provider. That convenience means the security of the provider account, device locks and recovery process matters.

Device-bound passkeys

A device-bound passkey stays on one hardware authenticator, such as a FIDO2 security key, or on a device configured not to export the credential. It is harder to copy and suits administrators, financial accounts and other high-impact targets. The trade-off is operational: keep a registered spare, document where it is stored and test recovery before the primary key is lost.

Many people can use both models: synced passkeys for routine services and a device-bound key for the most sensitive accounts. The right choice depends on the damage an account could cause, the number of devices that need access and whether you can maintain a recovery process.

How do I replace passwords with passkeys on my accounts?

Use the account’s security settings; labels differ, but the sequence is broadly consistent.

  1. Start with high-impact accounts. Prioritize your primary email, password manager, financial services, cloud administration and social accounts that can reset other logins.
  2. Update the device. Install current operating-system and browser updates, enable a screen lock and confirm that your device supports passkeys or has access to a compatible passkey manager.
  3. Open the account security page. Look under “Security,” “Sign-in,” “Authentication” or “Passkeys,” then choose “Add” or “Create passkey.”
  4. Approve locally. Confirm with your PIN, pattern or biometric. Do not type that information into a page reached through an unexpected message.
  5. Test a second sign-in. Sign out and verify that the passkey appears as an available method. This catches enrollment mistakes while the old password still works.
  6. Add recovery before removing alternatives. Register a second trusted device or hardware key, save the service’s recovery codes offline and verify that your recovery email and phone are secure.
  7. Keep a transition tool. For accounts that do not yet support passkeys, use a reputable password manager to generate unique passwords. Do not treat an SMS or email code as phishing-resistant merely because the page calls the process “passwordless.”

Never approve an unexpected enrollment prompt. Social engineering can target the registration step even when the finished credential is resistant to phishing.

What happens if I lose my phone or passkey?

Recovery depends on the credential type and the service. A synced passkey may be restored on a replacement device after you regain access to the provider and satisfy its recovery checks. A device-bound key cannot be copied from the lost hardware, so a spare registered key, another enrolled authenticator or printed recovery codes are essential.

  • Keep at least two recovery options for critical accounts, stored separately.
  • Remove a lost device or security key from the account’s registered-authenticator list as soon as possible.
  • Review active sessions and revoke unknown sessions after any device loss.
  • Protect the email account used for recovery with its own strong authentication.

Recovery is also an attack surface. A service that lets a caller bypass a passkey with weak identity checks can undermine the protection of the credential itself, so evaluate recovery controls when choosing a service.

What should businesses do before a passwordless rollout?

Enterprise deployment requires more than turning on a checkbox. Begin with an inventory of passwords, SMS-based verification and applications that cannot yet accept FIDO2. Then classify systems by administrator privilege, data sensitivity and recovery impact.

A practical rollout sequence

  1. Set policy. Decide where synced credentials are acceptable and where device-bound keys are required. Define minimum device, browser and operating-system versions.
  2. Pilot a representative group. Include administrators, remote workers, shared-device users and help-desk staff. Measure enrollment completion, sign-in failures and recovery calls.
  3. Prepare lifecycle controls. Document enrollment, replacement, revocation, employee departure and lost-device procedures. Ensure the help desk cannot casually reset a high-risk account.
  4. Communicate the change. Show the exact enrollment screens, explain local biometric verification and warn that no legitimate administrator needs a user’s PIN or recovery code.
  5. Expand by risk. Move privileged accounts and sensitive applications first, then general workforce and customer populations. Retain a controlled fallback for legacy applications while setting a retirement plan.

Microsoft announced that new consumer accounts became passwordless by default in 2025 and that its public-cloud Entra service is scheduled to make passkeys the default authentication experience on September 1, 2026. Microsoft also scheduled retirement of its provided SMS and voice authentication for that public-cloud Entra scope on February 1, 2027. Those are platform-specific dates, not a universal deadline for every website or employer.

Will passwords disappear completely?

Not soon, and no cited source establishes a universal password end date. Legacy software, recovery systems, offline workflows and services without passkey support will keep passwords in use during a long transition. “Passwordless” can also describe a flow that still relies on a phishable email link or SMS code, so inspect the actual authenticator rather than the marketing label.

The likely endpoint is a mixed environment: passkeys or other phishing-resistant FIDO2 credentials for supported accounts, password managers for remaining passwords, and carefully governed recovery methods. As more services accept passkeys, attackers will have fewer reusable secrets to steal, but compromised devices, fraudulent enrollment and weak recovery will still require attention.

What should you use instead of a password today?

Use a passkey wherever a trusted service offers one. Choose a synced passkey when cross-device convenience and recovery are priorities; add a device-bound FIDO2 security key for high-value accounts or when you want hardware separation. Keep your devices patched and locked, maintain a tested recovery method, and use a password manager with unique passwords for the accounts that have not made the transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a passkey be used on more than one device?

Yes. Synced passkeys can be available on multiple devices through the credential provider, while device-bound credentials remain tied to their specific hardware. Cross-device sign-in can also use a nearby phone or security key when the service supports that flow.

Do passkeys reveal my fingerprint or face to a website?

No. The biometric check normally occurs locally to unlock the credential. The service receives a cryptographic result, not your fingerprint or facial data.

Are passkeys safe if my phone is stolen while unlocked?

The thief may be able to access accounts that are already open, so remote lock and device-enrollment controls still matter. A screen lock, rapid device revocation and a separate recovery method limit the damage; a device-bound key kept separately provides additional isolation for critical accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a website still ask for my password after I create a passkey?

Some services keep the password as a fallback during migration, and others require it for sensitive account changes. Check whether the account lets you remove the password, but keep a secure recovery route before doing so.
