In 2026, AI is changing software development from a task of writing code line by line into one of directing and checking a software-producing system. Coding agents can plan work, edit repository files, run tests and prepare pull requests, but developers still need to define the goal, supply the right context and verify that the result is correct, secure and maintainable. More generated code does not automatically mean more valuable software: the team’s engineering practices determine whether faster production improves delivery or creates a larger review and repair burden.
What is changing in software development with AI in 2026?
The biggest shift is from autocomplete to agentic workflows. An autocomplete tool suggests code as a developer writes; an agent can take a higher-level task, work across files, use development tools and return a proposed change. GitHub has documented Copilot’s expansion into agent workflows, command-line work and pull requests, while Microsoft’s 2026 AI Economy Institute report points to coding assistants including Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and GitHub Copilot as contributors to software-code production.
That changes the unit of work. A developer may now delegate a bounded task—such as adding validation or updating a test—to an agent rather than manually creating every line. The human work moves upstream into making the task clear and downstream into deciding whether the proposed solution fits the system. The agent’s ability to produce a plausible patch is not proof that it understood the product requirement, preserved an architectural constraint or handled an unusual input.

Eirini Kalliamvakou wrote that “the developers who have gone furthest with AI are working differently,” and that they describe themselves less as code producers and more as “creative director[s] of code.” The useful point is not that implementation has disappeared; it is that orchestration and verification become a larger share of the work when implementation is partly delegated.

Will AI replace software developers?
The available evidence does not establish that AI will eliminate software-development jobs by 2026. Microsoft’s 2026 report says the full labor-market impact is not yet known and reports approximately 2.2 million U.S. software developers in 2025, up 8.5% year over year. That employment figure describes a past change, not a forecast or proof of what AI caused.
AI can reduce the time needed for some implementation tasks, but software development includes more than producing code. Someone must determine what should be built, reconcile conflicting requirements, choose a design, test behavior, assess risks and take responsibility for operating the result. As more code can be produced quickly, a team may need more careful prioritization and review rather than simply more code-writing capacity.
There is also an important difference between automating a task and replacing a role. A tool may draft a function or perform a repository change while a developer remains accountable for whether it is appropriate. The balance varies by task, system and team; current figures do not support a universal prediction about the number or shape of future software jobs.

They can help teams deliver work faster, but productivity figures need to be read alongside the work required to inspect and integrate the output. In a 2026 Black Duck/UserEvidence survey, 92% of surveyed teams reported improved productivity or release velocity, and respondents reported average savings of eight developer hours per week from AI coding assistants. These are survey-reported results, not a controlled measurement that guarantees the same savings for every team.
The same survey found that 90% of teams encountered workflow issues. Manual review, security testing and code rework were among the bottlenecks. That combination matters: faster drafting can move the queue from implementation to review, testing or repair. If those stages are already overloaded, the organization may generate changes faster without increasing the number of safe, accepted releases.
Microsoft’s 2026 report also gives useful context, but not a direct productivity measure: it reports that Git pushes increased 78% year over year globally in Q1 2026. A push is an activity measure, not a measure of correctness, customer value, maintainability or deployment success. Similarly, Microsoft reported that 17.8% of the global working-age population used AI in Q1 2026; that figure concerns broad AI use, not the share of developers using coding agents.

DORA’s 2025 report, based on nearly 5,000 technology professionals and more than 100 hours of qualitative data, describes AI as an amplifier of existing organizational strengths and weaknesses. In practical terms, a team with clear ownership, reliable automated tests and a manageable review process is better positioned to benefit than one with ambiguous requirements and brittle release practices. Buying or enabling a tool does not by itself fix those conditions.
How does AI change a developer’s day-to-day work?
AI changes where attention is spent: requirements, context and review become more consequential as routine code generation gets cheaper. The change is not identical across projects, but the work commonly shifts through these stages.
Requirements and planning
Before delegating a task, spell out the desired behavior and how to recognize success. Include relevant acceptance criteria, architectural constraints, repository context and the intended test strategy. An agent can only act on information it has; vague instructions encourage it to fill gaps with assumptions that may not match the product.
For a bounded change, a useful task description can identify the affected behavior, expected edge cases, files or components that are in scope, constraints that must not change, and checks that should pass. This does not guarantee a correct result, but it gives the developer a concrete basis for reviewing the result instead of judging only whether the code looks plausible.
Implementation
Generated code can make routine implementation faster, while raising the value of code reading and design judgment. Developers still need to decide whether the suggested abstraction is appropriate, whether it matches existing conventions and whether a small local change has introduced unnecessary complexity elsewhere. A patch that compiles may still encode the wrong assumption or duplicate an existing capability.
When assessing an agent, look beyond whether it can write code. Repository indexing and context handling affect whether it can find relevant patterns; task decomposition affects whether it can keep a larger change coherent; and the ability to produce reviewable changes affects how readily a person can inspect its work. Different tools may behave differently depending on repository size, task type and configuration, so a feature list alone is not evidence of fit.

Verification and review
Tests, static analysis, dependency checks and human review become more important when a system can produce changes faster than a team can inspect them. Read the change as a reviewer: trace it back to the requirement, examine the files it touches and consider failure paths, edge cases and compatibility. Treat a test run as evidence about the cases covered, not proof that every relevant behavior is correct.
Ask the agent to explain the change or identify its assumptions if that is useful, but check those claims against the code and test results. An agent’s summary can help a reviewer navigate a patch; it cannot replace review of the patch itself. Black Duck’s survey findings on manual review, security testing and rework show why this capacity must be planned rather than assumed to happen automatically.
Operations and integration
As agents interact with issue trackers, terminals, pull requests, CI systems and deployment tools, permissions become part of the engineering design. Teams should decide what an agent can read, change or execute, and which actions require human approval. Access to secrets, production systems or deployment pathways deserves particular care because an error can have consequences beyond a bad code suggestion.
Audit logs, clear permission boundaries and a recovery path help teams understand what happened and limit the impact of a mistake. Where an agent can alter shared state, define how to stop the workflow and revert or repair its changes. These safeguards do not make an agent infallible; they make its actions more observable and manageable.
How should teams review and secure AI-generated code?
Use the same engineering discipline expected for any contributed code, while paying attention to how quickly generated output can accumulate. eu-LISA’s 2026 Technology Monitoring Report says AI coding assistants may support productivity gains but require careful attention to security and quality, regular evaluation and sufficient resources to review generated code.
- Check behavior against the requirement. Confirm that the change addresses the requested outcome, handles relevant edge cases and does not silently broaden its scope.
- Run appropriate tests and analysis. Use the project’s test suite and static-analysis checks, and investigate failures rather than treating a generated explanation as a resolution.
- Inspect security-sensitive changes. Review authentication, authorization, input handling, data exposure and error paths where relevant. Do not assume generated code is secure because it follows a familiar pattern.
- Review dependencies and licenses. Check whether a proposed dependency is necessary and acceptable under the project’s dependency and license policies.
- Keep human ownership explicit. A named reviewer or team should remain responsible for approving the change and its operational impact.
Security review is not only a final gate. If a tool can access a repository or execute commands, teams should also review the tool’s own access, data handling and administrative controls. Separate the ability to propose code from permission to approve or deploy it when the workflow and risk justify that boundary.

How should you compare AI development tools?
Compare tools against the work and safeguards your team needs, not just their ability to generate a code snippet. The following criteria help expose meaningful differences between IDE assistants, command-line agents, hosted services and self-managed environments.
| Area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Repository and issue context | Can the tool find relevant files and work items? How does it handle repository indexing and context limits? |
| Models and control | Which models are supported, and can administrators or users control model selection? |
| Autonomy and permissions | What can the agent read, edit or execute? Which actions need approval? |
| Development workflow | Can it run tests and integrate with pull requests, CI and the team’s issue process? |
| Quality and security | How does the workflow support code-quality checks, security analysis, dependency review and license checks? |
| Privacy and administration | What controls cover retention, use of submitted data for training and enterprise administration? |
| Operations and portability | Can the team observe and audit actions, manage costs, recover from failures and use the tool across IDE, command-line, hosted or self-hosted environments? |
Test candidate tools on representative tasks from your own codebase, including work that needs context across multiple files and changes that require meaningful tests. Compare the quality and reviewability of the resulting changes, how much setup and correction they need, and whether the permissions and administrative controls fit your environment. A successful demo on an isolated example does not establish that a tool is suitable for a production workflow.
What skills should developers learn for agentic coding?
Prompting is useful, but it is not enough. The skills that make AI-assisted work dependable are the ones that let people specify, inspect and own the result.
- Requirements and acceptance criteria: Turn an ambiguous request into a bounded change with observable success conditions.
- Code reading and debugging: Trace behavior across files, recognize incorrect assumptions and diagnose failures without relying on the agent’s explanation.
- Test design: Choose meaningful cases, including boundary conditions and regressions, rather than equating a passing test run with complete coverage.
- Architecture communication: Explain how a change should fit existing components and what constraints an implementation must preserve.
- Security and dependency judgment: Identify sensitive code paths, assess proposed dependencies and understand the project’s license and security expectations.
- Validation of agent claims: Check whether reported tests ran, whether they passed and whether the proposed work actually satisfies the task.
For teams, these skills need to be supported by workflow design. Allocate time for review, make ownership clear and choose tasks whose scope can be checked. If the only success metric is how much code an agent produces, the metric can reward output while hiding defects, rework or risk.

Governance is becoming more structured, but a developing standard should not be mistaken for a certification or a guarantee about a particular tool. ISO/IEC AWI 26044 is an approved work item under development in 2026. Its proposed reference model spans project, technical, organizational and governance processes, including requirements engineering, architecture and design, implementation, verification and validation, integration, maintenance, quality assurance, knowledge management and AI-tool governance.

For a software team, that breadth signals that responsible AI use is not just a question of which model to select. It also involves how work is planned, how generated changes are checked, who has authority to approve them, how tools are governed and how knowledge about the workflow is maintained. The work item is a reference model in development; it does not establish that a named product complies or that following a checklist guarantees safe results.

A practical governance approach should make tool access and permitted uses clear, identify who owns review and approval, and define how the team will evaluate the workflow over time. Regular evaluation matters because tools, model behavior and project needs can change. The appropriate controls depend on the code, data and systems the workflow can reach.
How can a team adopt coding agents without creating a review backlog?
Start with bounded, reversible work and measure the complete path from task to accepted change, not just code generation. This lets a team learn whether an agent saves time after review, testing and rework are counted.
- Choose a suitable first task. Prefer work with a clear expected outcome and a practical way to check it. Avoid starting with a change whose failure would have broad or difficult-to-reverse impact.
- Write down scope and success conditions. State the behavior, constraints and checks before asking an agent to act, so the result can be judged against something more concrete than plausibility.
- Set permissions deliberately. Grant only the access needed for the task, decide which actions require approval and retain a route to stop or undo changes.
- Review the complete change. Inspect the diff, run the relevant checks and investigate anything the agent claims to have tested or changed.
- Track the downstream work. Notice review time, failed checks, rework and integration friction alongside any time saved during implementation.
- Adjust the workflow before scaling. If review or security testing is already a bottleneck, improve that capacity before increasing the volume of generated changes.
This approach treats agent adoption as a change to the development system, not just an installation. It also gives a team a basis for deciding where autonomy is appropriate: expand it only where the work can be observed, evaluated and recovered safely.

Does a 78% increase in Git pushes mean developers became 78% more productive?
No. Microsoft’s figure counts a change in global Git-push activity in Q1 2026 compared with the prior year; it does not measure completed features, code quality or customer outcomes. More pushes may indicate more activity, but activity alone cannot establish productivity.
Can an AI agent safely merge or deploy code without a developer?
The evidence cited here does not establish that autonomous merging or deployment is safe across projects. Whether to permit those actions depends on the system’s risk, the quality of its automated checks, the agent’s permissions and the team’s ability to detect and recover from a bad change.
Is ISO/IEC AWI 26044 already a certification developers can earn?
No. In 2026 it is an approved work item under development for a reference model, not a published certification scheme. Its proposed scope covers processes around AI use in software engineering rather than certifying an individual developer.
