Short answer: Controlled tests have not shown that natal-chart horoscopes reliably identify a person’s measured personality traits better than chance. In a 2008 double-blind study, students could recognize their genuine personality-inventory summaries but could not pick their genuine computer-generated astrological summaries. Earlier studies using different methods reached similar results.
That finding is narrower than “every horoscope is false.” The tests examined specified claims about personality and chart-based descriptions, not every astrological tradition, symbolic practice or future-oriented prediction. A horoscope can still feel personally meaningful; perceived fit is not the same as demonstrated predictive accuracy.
What does “accurate” mean for a horoscope?
Accuracy has to be defined before it can be tested. A horoscope might be judged by whether it sounds generally relatable, whether a reader finds it useful for reflection, or whether it correctly predicts an independently measured trait or event. Those are different standards.

Their choices can then be compared with chance. Another approach is to calculate chart features and test whether they are associated with scores on established personality instruments. Both methods ask whether astrology adds information beyond broad statements that could fit many people.

A high accuracy rating from a reader is evidence of an experience—“this sounds like me”—but it does not by itself show that the chart produced the description or that the description would distinguish that reader from someone else. That distinction is central to interpreting the studies below.
What controlled studies have found
The studies used different samples, personality measures and matching tasks. Their results should not be collapsed into one sweeping claim, but together they provide repeated tests of chart-based personality identification.

Carlson’s double-blind tests
Shawn Carlson’s 1985 Nature paper framed the question explicitly: “Two double-blind tests were made of the thesis that astrological ‘natal charts’ can be used to describe accurately personality traits of test subjects.” The double-blind design matters because it limits cues about which chart or description is supposed to be correct. The result concerns the tested thesis, not a universal verdict on all astrology.

Wyman and Vyse’s 2008 profile-matching study
Wyman and Vyse asked 52 college students to choose their own profile from one real and one bogus candidate. They did this for two kinds of summaries: a computer-generated natal-chart description and a description based on the NEO-FFI, a conventional personality inventory.
The students could identify their genuine NEO-FFI summaries at better-than-chance rates. They could not identify which astrological summary had been generated from their own birth information. Because the same participants performed both tasks, the comparison is useful: the students were capable of recognizing an individually relevant profile under the study conditions, but that ability did not transfer to the astrological summaries.

The sample was made up of college students, so the result should not be presented as a measurement of every age group or culture. It is evidence about this participant population and this computer-generated horoscope format.
Hume’s 1977 chart-feature analysis
Hume’s study examined 196 college-age participants and compared astrological dimensions with scores from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Leary Interpersonal Check List. The analysis made 632 comparisons. If chart features predicted the measured personality variables in the proposed way, the pattern of statistically significant results should have appeared at an expected rate.
Instead, significant chi-square results appeared less often than chance expectations. The authors rejected the prediction hypothesis they tested. The large number of comparisons does not mean that every possible astrological statement was tested; it describes the scope of that particular analysis.
Tyson’s five-horoscope matching task
Tyson’s 1984 study involved 15 participants. Each participant nominated a close friend or family member. Participants and nominees were asked to select the correct one of five cast horoscopes. Neither group reliably identified the horoscope that used the participant’s birth data.
Astrologer ratings also failed to correlate with psychometric scores, the participants’ self-ratings or the nominees’ ratings. The sample is small, so the study cannot provide a precise estimate of an effect across the population. It does, however, test a concrete claim: that a person or someone who knows them can recognize the correct chart-derived horoscope when alternatives are present.

Why can a horoscope feel uncannily personal?
The Barnum effect
Wyman and Vyse observed a Barnum effect in participants’ ratings of both astrological and psychological descriptions. The term describes a tendency to rate broadly worded statements as highly accurate for oneself, even when the same statements could apply to many people.
A sentence such as “You sometimes doubt your decisions but can be confident when circumstances require it” contains enough flexibility to accommodate ordinary variation. Readers naturally notice the parts that fit and may give less weight to details that do not. A Barnum effect can therefore raise an accuracy rating without showing that birth data generated a distinctive, person-specific description.
This is one factor relevant to perceived fit, not a complete explanation for every reader’s experience. A person may also approach a horoscope for entertainment, identity, ritual or reflection. Those purposes are different from a claim that the chart predicts measured traits.
Broad language and unfalsifiable wording
Many popular horoscopes use conditional language: “you may,” “at times,” or “a change could be coming.” Such wording is difficult to disconfirm because almost any outcome can be interpreted as compatible with it. A statement becomes more informative when it specifies what will happen, when it will happen, and what observation would count as a miss.
Specificity alone does not make a prediction true. It makes the claim testable. A fair test must be written before the outcome is known, use a clear time window and record misses as well as hits.

What astrology can tell you
It can provide a symbolic framework
Astrology can give readers a vocabulary for discussing temperament, relationships, priorities or life transitions. Someone may use a chart as a prompt for journaling or as part of a cultural or spiritual practice. The value in that use is interpretive: the reader decides what questions or meanings are useful.
Symbolic usefulness does not require a demonstrated mechanism for predicting personality. A poem, story or reflective exercise can prompt insight without being a measurement instrument. If you use a horoscope this way, treat it as a starting point for questions rather than an authority that overrides your observations.
It can describe an experience of meaning
A horoscope may help a reader articulate feelings that were already present. That can be subjectively worthwhile. The controlled tests discussed here did not examine whether people enjoy astrology, find comfort in it or use it to organize personal narratives. They examined whether chart-based descriptions could be identified or matched to measured traits.
What astrology cannot establish from these tests
- These studies do not show that every horoscope, astrologer or astrological tradition is false.
- They do not test every possible future-oriented claim, such as a particular event on a particular date.
- They do not disprove subjective meaning, enjoyment, ritual or cultural identity.
- They do not provide a current percentage of people who believe in or use astrology.
- They do not justify treating a horoscope as a clinical assessment, a validated personality inventory or a substitute for professional advice.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: in the specified experiments, natal-chart descriptions did not reliably identify participants’ measured personalities or outperform chance in the matching tasks.

You can apply a simple protocol whenever a horoscope makes a factual prediction or personality claim.

- Write down the claim exactly. Replace “something important may happen” with the observable event, person, behavior or decision being predicted.
- Set the time window in advance. Record the date range, location if relevant and what would count as a hit, a miss or an ambiguous result.
- Preserve the full text. Do not edit a statement after events occur. Keep the original wording, including qualifiers.
- Record misses. A tally that counts only memorable matches will exaggerate apparent accuracy.
- Use a comparison. If possible, compare the horoscope with a generic statement written without birth data or with a prediction generated by a method chosen before the outcome.
- Ask whether the claim could fit almost anyone. Statements that cover opposite possibilities or ordinary experiences have little discriminating power.
- Separate reflection from prediction. If the text helps you think, note that benefit separately from whether it forecast an independently verifiable event.
This procedure cannot prove that every astrological idea is impossible. It can prevent hindsight, selective memory and flexible wording from being mistaken for measured predictive skill.
How to read the evidence without overclaiming
Check the population
Wyman and Vyse studied 52 college students, Hume studied 196 college-age participants and Tyson studied 15 participants plus nominees. Results from these groups should not be converted into claims about every country, age group or astrological community.
Check the outcome measure
The studies used different standards: NEO-FFI summaries, MMPI scores, the Leary Interpersonal Check List, psychometric ratings, self-ratings and nominee ratings. A failure on one measure does not logically test every possible human characteristic. It does show that the tested chart-based claims did not perform on those predefined measures.

Check the design
Double-blind identification tests whether people can recognize their real description when cues are controlled. Chart-feature analyses test statistical associations. Astrologer-rating studies test whether trained judgments align with independent scores. These designs answer related but not identical questions, which is why their conclusions should be stated separately.
Distinguish a null result from a universal disproof
When participants perform at chance or below the expected pattern, the immediate conclusion is that the proposed method was not supported under those conditions. A universal statement—“no astrological claim can ever work”—would require testing a much broader set of claims and methods than these studies covered.
A practical standard for responsible use
Use a horoscope as reflective or recreational material if that is what you want, while keeping decisions that affect health, safety, finances, education or relationships anchored to relevant evidence and direct communication. Do not treat a chart as a diagnosis or as proof of another person’s motives.
For a prediction to earn confidence, require the same basics you would expect from any forecasting method: a clearly defined outcome, a precommitted time frame, records of failures, independent measurement and performance that beats an appropriate comparison. The studies summarized here did not find that level of reliability for the tested natal-chart personality claims.

Astrology may still function as a personal or cultural meaning-making practice, but that role should not be confused with demonstrated predictive accuracy.
