Choose by the video mode you need, not by the HDMI number printed on a box. For 4K at 60 Hz with HDR, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable rated up to 18 Gbps is the appropriate category. For 4K at 120 Hz, 8K at 60 Hz, or another mode that requires up to 48 Gbps, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Then verify that the exact source device and display port support that mode; an HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee 4K120, variable refresh rate, eARC, or any other particular feature.

HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 are not complete capability checklists

HDMI version numbers describe a specification generation, but they do not tell you every feature a particular television, monitor, receiver, game console, graphics card, or cable supports. HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) says that support for HDMI 2.1 features is optional. A product can be marketed as HDMI 2.1 compliant while supporting TMDS signaling and 18 Gbps, without supporting FRL signaling or 48 Gbps.

Manufacturers that market a product as HDMI 2.1 are required to list the HDMI 2.1 features supported by that model. Read the model-specific specifications and the documentation for the individual port instead of assuming that every socket on the device has the same capability.

This is why “HDMI 2.1” does not automatically mean 4K at 120 Hz, 8K, VRR, ALLM, eARC, or 48 Gbps. Those capabilities must be stated for the product and, where relevant, for a specific input or output.

The cable categories that matter

For shopping, HDMI LA’s certified cable names are more useful than informal labels such as “HDMI 2.0 cable” or “HDMI 2.1 cable.” The category describes the tested bandwidth class and the formats it is intended to carry.

Cable category Certified bandwidth class Formats identified by HDMI LA Best fit
High Speed HDMI Up to 10.2 Gbps 1080p and beyond Basic or older systems that do not require the higher 18 Gbps or 48 Gbps categories
Premium High Speed HDMI Up to 18 Gbps 4K/Ultra HD at 60 Hz and HDR 4K60 HDR systems operating within 18 Gbps
Ultra High Speed HDMI Up to 48 Gbps 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz High-bandwidth gaming, PC and video systems that require up to 48 Gbps

These are cable capability categories, not promises that a connected source or display can generate or accept a particular signal. The weakest component in the chain determines the mode you can use.

Which cable should you buy?

For 4K60 HDR

Choose a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable when your source and display are designed for 4K at 60 Hz with HDR and the connection operates at up to 18 Gbps. This is the relevant category for many 4K televisions, streaming devices, disc players and older-generation consoles that do not target 4K120.

For 4K120 or 8K60

Choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120 Hz, 8K at 60 Hz, or any configuration that needs up to 48 Gbps. Confirm that both ends of the link support the desired resolution, refresh rate, color format and HDR features; the cable cannot add a mode absent from either device.

For 1080p or an older setup

Do not replace a working cable solely because a newer HDMI number exists. HDMI LA describes High Speed HDMI as tested for up to 10.2 Gbps and 1080p and beyond. If your equipment is operating within that range and the existing cable is reliable, a new cable may provide no practical benefit.

When you want one cable for a future upgrade

A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is backward compatible with existing HDMI devices. It can be a sensible choice when you expect to move from 4K60 to a 4K120 or 8K60 source later, but connecting it to an older device does not upgrade that device’s features or bandwidth.

How to identify the right HDMI port

There is no universal rule that every HDMI socket on a device has identical capabilities. A television may reserve one input for eARC, a monitor may provide its highest refresh rate on only one input, and an audio/video receiver may have different input and output limits. The exact model’s manual, on-screen information page and manufacturer specification table are the authority.

  1. Write down both model numbers. Record the exact source model (console, computer, player or receiver) and display model. Similar names can hide different port capabilities.
  2. Find the port specification. Look for entries such as maximum resolution and refresh rate, bandwidth, FRL or TMDS, VRR, ALLM, HDR formats and eARC. Treat a generic “HDMI 2.1” badge as a starting point, not as the complete specification.
  3. Locate the labeled socket. Use labels such as “4K120,” “8K,” “eARC/ARC,” or a numbered input only when the model documentation confirms what that label means. If the manual lists different limits for different sockets, use the one with the required capability.
  4. Check the signal path. If a receiver, switch, soundbar or capture device sits between source and display, every device and cable in that path must support the target mode. Connecting a 4K120 source to a 4K120 television through an 18 Gbps intermediary will not produce 4K120.

Because HDMI 2.1 features are optional, do not infer support for VRR, ALLM, eARC, 4K120 or 48 Gbps from the version label alone. The product-level feature list must name the capability.

How to verify an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable

HDMI LA requires Ultra High Speed HDMI cable models to pass certification testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center. Certification is distinct from a seller’s unverified claim that a cable is “8K” or “HDMI 2.1.”

  • Check the package for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification Label. The label is the visual check HDMI LA specifies for certified packaging.
  • Scan the label’s QR code. The code provides a route to verify the cable model and certification information.
  • Look at the cable jacket. HDMI LA says the official cable name must appear on the outer jacket.
  • Confirm length and connector fit. Make sure the cable reaches without strain and that its connector matches the source and display sockets. Certification does not make an incorrectly sized or incompatible connector fit.
  • Keep the model details. Save a photograph of the label or the verified model information in case you need to replace or troubleshoot the cable later.

Generic marketplace wording, a logo printed by a reseller, or a claim that a cable is “48 Gbps ready” is not equivalent to the official certification label and model verification.

A practical selection procedure

Step 1: Define the mode you actually need

Start with the desired output, such as 1080p, 4K60 HDR, 4K120 or 8K60. Include the refresh rate and HDR requirement; “4K” alone is not specific enough to select a bandwidth category.

Step 2: Check the source and display separately

Read the exact specifications for the source output and display input. A display that accepts 4K120 does not make a source capable of producing it, and a powerful source cannot force a display to accept an unsupported signal.

Step 3: Check every device in between

For an AV receiver, switch, soundbar or other intermediary, verify that its relevant input and output support the same mode. If its documentation does not state the required capability, connect the source directly to the display for testing.

Step 4: Select the matching cable category

Use Premium High Speed HDMI for a system that stays within 18 Gbps, including 4K60 HDR. Use Ultra High Speed HDMI for a system that requires up to 48 Gbps, including 4K120 or 8K60. A High Speed HDMI cable is appropriate only when the system’s chosen mode fits within its 10.2 Gbps class.

  • The Ultimate Perfectionist: Each UHD HDMI cable even every part has been put through rigorous tests. We've combined every flawless part into a perfect 8K HDMI cable, after pass the performance tests in the laboratory and you get a perfect HDMI cable 2-pack

Step 5: Verify certification and installation details

For an Ultra High Speed purchase, verify the package label and QR code, check the jacket marking, and select a length that can be routed without tight bends or tension. For Premium High Speed, look for the certified category name rather than relying on a version number printed by a retailer.

Step 6: Set the mode in the device menus

After connecting, select the intended resolution and refresh rate in the console, computer or player settings. Some displays expose an enhanced, high-bandwidth or 4K120 mode per input; enable it only on the documented compatible port. If HDR, VRR or eARC has its own toggle, enable it only after confirming that both connected devices support it.

Step 7: Confirm the result

Use the display’s information overlay or the source’s video settings page to confirm the negotiated resolution, refresh rate and HDR status. Seeing a picture does not prove that the system is running at the target refresh rate; a connection can fall back to a lower mode.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

“My HDMI 2.1 television does not show 4K120.”

Check the television’s individual input specification and make sure the source also supports 4K120. Try the input documented for 4K120, enable its enhanced/high-bandwidth setting if required, and remove an intermediary receiver or switch temporarily. Replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed model if the existing cable’s category cannot be verified.

“The cable says 8K, but the signal drops out.”

Verify the official Ultra High Speed certification label and QR code rather than trusting the seller’s wording. Confirm that the cable is not damaged, is long enough without tension, and is fully seated at both ends. Test the source directly with the display to isolate an intermediary device.

“A new Ultra High Speed cable did not add VRR or eARC.”

A cable carries signals; it does not add features that the source, display or receiver lacks. Read the exact model specifications for VRR or eARC and use the port identified for that feature. HDMI LA’s optional-feature policy means an HDMI 2.1 product may omit either capability.

“Everything works at 4K60 but not at 4K120.”

That symptom usually indicates a bandwidth or device-limit boundary. 4K60 HDR fits the Premium High Speed category up to 18 Gbps, while 4K120 is listed in the Ultra High Speed category up to 48 Gbps. Check whether the source, display and every intermediary support 4K120, then use a certified Ultra High Speed cable and the correct port.

“The port is labeled HDMI 2.0. Is the cable automatically limited to 18 Gbps?”

Do not use the port label alone as a complete specification. Older HDMI 2.0-compliant products may continue to identify themselves as HDMI 2.0 while listing their supported features. Read the model’s stated maximum resolution, refresh rate and bandwidth, then choose the cable for that stated mode.

What HDMI 2.1 does—and does not—tell you

HDMI LA’s consumer guidance says a product marketed as HDMI 2.1 is compliant with that specification and supports one or more HDMI 2.1 features. The manufacturer must list which features are supported. The same guidance explicitly allows a compliant product to support TMDS and 18 Gbps without FRL or 48 Gbps.

In practical terms, the number is useful only when paired with the feature list. For a gaming setup, look specifically for the stated resolution and refresh rate plus VRR and ALLM if those matter. For a home-theater setup, check eARC, HDR support and the receiver’s pass-through limits. For a PC monitor, check the exact input’s maximum refresh rate and resolution rather than assuming every input is equivalent.

HDMI 2.2 context as of October 2026

HDMI LA’s current specification overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest HDMI specification and describes up to 96 Gbps. It distinguishes the Ultra96 cable for HDMI 2.2 applications from the Ultra High Speed cable used for configurations up to 48 Gbps.

This does not change the HDMI 2.0-versus-2.1 choice for a 4K60, 4K120 or 8K60 system. If a future HDMI 2.2 product uses the “Ultra96” feature name and requires the maximum bandwidth, HDMI LA says an Ultra96 cable is required. Do not assume that an Ultra High Speed cable’s 48 Gbps rating covers that newer 96 Gbps requirement.

Quick decision table

Your target setup Cable category to look for Port and device checks
1080p or an older mode within 10.2 Gbps High Speed HDMI, if the existing cable is not sufficient Confirm the source and display support the selected mode
4K at 60 Hz with HDR, up to 18 Gbps Certified Premium High Speed HDMI Verify 4K60 HDR support on the exact source output and display input
4K at 120 Hz Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Verify 4K120 on both devices and on every intermediary port
8K at 60 Hz Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Verify 8K60 support and the required settings on the exact ports
VRR, ALLM or eARC Cable category required by the chosen video mode Check that the specific source, display and relevant port list the feature; HDMI 2.1 alone is not a guarantee
HDMI 2.2 mode using Ultra96 Ultra96 cable for the maximum 96 Gbps applications Verify HDMI 2.2 and Ultra96 requirements for every device in the chain

Bottom line for buying and connecting

For a 4K60 HDR connection, buy the certified Premium High Speed HDMI category and verify that both ports support 4K60 HDR. For 4K120 or 8K60, buy a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, verify its package QR label, and use the exact ports documented for those modes. Treat HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 labels as clues—not guarantees—and make the final decision from the model-specific port features and the video mode you intend to run.
