Grok Imagine is xAI’s consumer image-and-video generator. It can create images from text or voice, animate uploaded photos, and generate short videos with sound. The service attracted attention after its August 2025 launch because it included a “Spicy” setting that was reported to allow some sexually explicit or partially nude imagery. That launch behavior should not be confused with the product’s current documented limits: as of August 12, 2026, xAI’s public materials emphasize six-second, 720p consumer videos, visible watermarks, continuing moderation, and an explicit ban on non-consensual intimate imagery.

What Grok Imagine is—and what changed

Grok Imagine is the name xAI uses for its consumer image and video generation experience inside Grok, on the web at grok.com/imagine, and in the Grok mobile apps. It supports text-to-image generation, image-to-video animation, and video creation with audio.

The most important distinction is between the August 2025 launch reports and the current 2026 product description:

Period What was reported or announced How to interpret it
August 4–7, 2025 Grok Imagine launched on iOS for SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers, with image generation, image animation, native audio, and a reported maximum video length of 15 seconds. These were launch-period observations. They do not establish the current duration, pricing, or availability.
January 2026 xAI announced a developer-facing Grok Imagine API for text-to-video, image-to-video, video editing, native audio, and flexible output formats. The API is separate from the ordinary consumer app experience.
June 16, 2026 xAI announced Video 1.5 Fast for the web and mobile apps, describing six-second, 720p videos and improvements to motion, physics, audio, speech synchronization, and generation speed. Current consumer references should use the six-second Video 1.5 description rather than presenting 15 seconds as a standing limit.
June 26, 2026 xAI’s consumer Terms of Service set age, rights, consent, content-review, and user-responsibility requirements. Using someone’s likeness, voice, image, or other identifying attributes is not automatically authorized merely because the app accepts an upload.

How the original Grok Imagine workflow worked

Contemporaneous hands-on coverage described a simple mobile workflow:

#1 Best Overall
AI Image Generator
  • No Cost & No Subscriptions
  • Unlimited Generation of Images
  • Incredibly Realistic Images
  1. Open the Imagine tab in the Grok app.
  2. Enter a text description or upload an image.
  3. Select one of the generated results.
  4. Tap Make Video to animate the still image.
  5. Choose a generation mode: Custom, Fun, Normal, or Spicy.

The result was intended to be a short video rather than a conventional edited production. The launch reporting described native audio and clips of up to 15 seconds. Early examples also showed a familiar weakness of fast-moving generative video systems: human faces and bodies could appear waxy, distorted, or uncanny, especially during motion.

That workflow and those labels were documented shortly after launch. xAI has since changed the model line and expanded access beyond the initial iOS rollout, so the exact buttons, modes, limits, and subscription gates may differ by account, device, country, and date.

What “Spicy” mode did—and what it did not mean

“Spicy” was an NSFW-oriented option reported at launch. TechCrunch and PCMag said it could produce some sexually explicit material, including partial nudity. PCMag also reported that the app requested a birth year but did not appear to perform formal age verification at that time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean Spicy was an unrestricted pornography generator or a moderation-free setting. Even the launch coverage described blocked prompts and outputs, and xAI’s current FAQ says that enabling NSFW does not turn moderation off.

The responsible way to describe the feature is therefore:

  • It was a setting for some adult-themed or sexually explicit generations.
  • It was not a promise that every adult request would be accepted.
  • It did not permit content involving minors or non-consensual intimate imagery.
  • Its current availability and eligibility are not established by the current public app listing.

As of August 12, 2026, there is no authoritative current documentation in the available research confirming that the original Spicy interface, its exact modes, its subscription requirements, or its regional availability remain unchanged. Users should check the current app or web interface rather than rely on a 2025 screenshot or article.

What the 2026 Video 1.5 update adds

xAI’s June 16, 2026 announcement describes Video 1.5 Fast as the consumer-facing model available on the web and in the mobile apps. The announcement highlights:

Anime AI Image Generator
  • Instant anime art generation in just seconds.
  • User-friendly design, no artistic skills required.
  • AI-powered creation from simple text descriptions.
  • Multiple image dimensions for wallpapers and social media.
  • Intuitive home screen for effortless creativity.
  • Six-second videos: Current consumer materials emphasize six-second clips, replacing the launch-era assumption that a typical clip can be up to 15 seconds.
  • 720p output: The announcement describes 720p consumer videos.
  • Audio: xAI says the newer model improves generated audio and speech synchronization.
  • Better motion and physics: The update is intended to make movement and interactions between objects more coherent.
  • Faster generation: In the comparison cited by xAI, a six-second video was produced in approximately 25 seconds. That is an announcement benchmark, not a guaranteed result for every prompt, account, device, or period of service demand.

Video quality can still vary substantially. Complex scenes, multiple people, readable text, rapid camera movement, hands, reflections, and physically complicated actions remain difficult categories for generative video systems in general. A short clip that looks convincing in its first frame may develop identity changes, unnatural motion, or audio mismatches as it progresses.

Consumer Grok Imagine versus the Grok Imagine API

xAI also announced a Grok Imagine API for developers. It is not simply another name for the mobile app. The API was described as a unified service for:

  • Text-to-video generation
  • Image-to-video animation
  • Video editing
  • Native audio generation
  • Flexible video formats

In June 2026, xAI said Imagine Video 1.5 was generally available through the API while the Fast version was available on the consumer web and mobile surfaces. Developers should therefore verify the current API documentation, model names, limits, formats, authentication requirements, and pricing separately from the consumer app. A feature visible in Grok Imagine does not automatically imply that the same control or policy treatment is available through the API.

Who can use it now?

Availability is unusually difficult to summarize because the product has changed quickly and xAI’s current materials do not document every access rule in one place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Web and mobile: xAI currently describes Grok Imagine as available through the web experience and the iOS and Android apps.
  • App pricing: The current U.S. App Store listing describes the app as free with in-app purchases. That does not prove that every generation feature, model, speed tier, or NSFW control is free.
  • Age rating: The U.S. App Store listing carries a 16+ rating, while xAI’s consumer Terms of Service generally require users to be at least 13 or the applicable minimum age in their location. An app-store rating and a legal minimum age are different requirements.
  • Subscriptions: At launch, access was reported for SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers on iOS. PCMag also reported being able to generate images without one of those subscriptions. Those observations should not be used to describe current access rules.
  • Spicy access: The current app listing does not document whether Spicy is available, which accounts qualify, whether a subscription is required, or which regions support it.

For a current answer, sign in to the official app or Grok Imagine web experience and inspect the controls shown for your account. Do not assume that an option available to one person is available to everyone.

Current moderation and safety boundaries

xAI’s current FAQ makes an important point: enabling NSFW does not disable moderation. The company says the following remain prohibited regardless of settings or subscription:

  • Child sexual abuse material
  • Sexual content involving minors
  • Non-consensual intimate imagery

xAI’s May 2026 non-consensual-intimate-content policy specifically covers real, synthetically generated, or altered images and videos that depict an identifiable person in an intimate or sexual context without that person’s consent. The policy prohibits publication, sharing, and distribution of that material. It also describes an in-product reporting process and says valid removal requests will be handled as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours.

  • Choose from 1:1, 16:9, or 9:16 ratios
  • Save, share, or delete creations with one tap
  • Full-screen viewer for detailed image exploration

That policy is a rule, not proof that enforcement is perfect. Reports about Grok’s image tools have raised concerns about sexualized deepfakes, celebrity likenesses, and inconsistent restrictions. A service can formally ban a category while still failing to block every attempt to create or distribute it. Users should not treat a successful generation as evidence that the content is lawful, authorized, or safe to publish.

Why the launch became controversial

The controversy involved more than the existence of an adult-content setting. Three capabilities interacted in a particularly sensitive way:

  1. Image editing and animation: Users could start with an existing photo and turn it into a moving or altered image.
  2. Identifiable people: Celebrity and public-figure likenesses could be requested, creating impersonation, reputation, and publicity-rights concerns.
  3. A permissive-sounding adult mode: The “Spicy” label suggested broader sexual-content access than many mainstream image tools offered.

Those capabilities create a sharp distinction between fictional adult material or consensual creative work and harmful content involving a real person. An adult character created from scratch is not the same policy or ethical situation as using a recognizable person’s face in an intimate scene. Consent, identity, local law, platform rules, and the intended audience all matter.

Early reports also noted that celebrity-image restrictions appeared inconsistent. That does not mean every celebrity request succeeded, nor does it establish that every current safeguard works uniformly. It does mean that users should apply their own judgment and obtain permission rather than relying only on an automated filter.

Watermarks, rights, and publishing restrictions

xAI’s current FAQ says generated images and videos carry a Grok watermark and that there is no setting to remove it. Anyone planning to post or monetize an output should account for that visible provenance mark in the final design. Do not use editing tools to remove it when doing so would violate the service’s rules or misrepresent the origin of the media.

xAI’s June 2026 Terms of Service also place responsibility on the user to have the necessary rights, licenses, notices, and consents for supplied images, likenesses, voices, and other attributes. In practical terms, before uploading or animating an image, ask:

  • Do I own the image or have permission to use it?
  • Does it contain a recognizable person who has agreed to this use?
  • Do I have permission for the person’s voice, likeness, branding, or copyrighted characters?
  • Could the result falsely suggest that a real person said or did something?
  • Am I allowed to publish the output under the rules of the destination platform?

The same terms reserve xAI’s ability to review user content for product improvement, security, misuse investigations, and legal compliance. Users should avoid uploading confidential, sensitive, or personally identifying material unless they understand the current service terms and are authorized to share it.

Practical checklist before publishing a Grok-generated video

  1. Check the source image. Confirm that you have permission to use every person, logo, artwork, and audio element in the input.
  2. Review the identity. Look for face changes, accidental resemblance to a real person, or an output that could be mistaken for an authentic event.
  3. Inspect the entire clip. Do not judge only the thumbnail. Check hands, faces, text, background objects, speech synchronization, and audio artifacts from beginning to end.
  4. Keep consent separate from access. If Grok accepts an image, that does not mean you have permission to publish the result.
  5. Leave the watermark intact. xAI says there is no removal setting and expects generated media to carry the Grok mark.
  6. Label synthetic media where appropriate. Disclosure is especially important when a viewer might mistake the video for documentary footage, a real endorsement, or a real person’s statement.
  7. Do not create or distribute intimate depictions of identifiable people without consent. That includes altered or fully synthetic imagery.
  8. Recheck the current terms and platform rules. Generation policies, regional restrictions, and publishing requirements can change independently.

Is Grok Imagine still a 15-second video generator?

Not as a current blanket description. Reports from the August 2025 launch described clips of up to 15 seconds. xAI’s June 2026 consumer announcement and current U.S. App Store description emphasize six-second videos, with the newer Video 1.5 Fast model described as producing 720p clips with sound.

The two statements can both be accurate for their respective dates. The error is presenting the 2025 launch limit as though it were the current, universal behavior of every Grok Imagine model and account.

Is Spicy mode still available?

The available current documentation does not provide a definitive answer for every user or region. xAI’s current FAQ discusses NSFW settings and confirms that moderation remains active, but the current app listing does not specify the exact Spicy interface, eligibility rules, subscription requirement, or geographic availability.

If the option appears in your current account, treat it as a controlled feature—not as permission to create prohibited or non-consensual material. If it does not appear, that may reflect an account, region, platform, model, age, or policy difference rather than proof that the feature has been removed globally.

Bottom line

Grok Imagine did launch in August 2025 with text-to-image generation, image animation, native audio, and a controversial “Spicy” mode that reports described as allowing some explicit adult imagery. In 2026, however, the product is broader and its current consumer description is different: xAI emphasizes the Video 1.5 line, six-second 720p clips, improved audio and motion, and availability on the web and both major mobile platforms.

The enduring practical limits are just as important as the generation features. Moderation still applies, watermarks cannot be removed through an official setting, users are responsible for rights and consent, and xAI explicitly prohibits sexual content involving minors and non-consensual intimate imagery. Access and feature labels remain account-, region-, platform-, and date-sensitive, so the current app or web interface—not launch coverage—is the source to check before relying on a particular mode or video limit.

What was Grok’s “Spicy” mode?

“Spicy” was an NSFW-oriented mode reported during the August 2025 launch. Coverage described it as allowing some sexually explicit or partially nude imagery, but it was not presented as moderation-free. xAI’s current FAQ says NSFW settings do not permit content involving minors or non-consensual intimate imagery.

How long are Grok Imagine videos?

Launch reports in August 2025 described clips of up to 15 seconds. Current xAI materials emphasize six-second, 720p Video 1.5 Fast clips for the consumer web and mobile experience. Limits can vary by model, account, platform, and date.

Can the Grok watermark be removed?

xAI’s current FAQ says generated images and videos carry a Grok watermark and that there is no setting to remove it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I animate a celebrity’s or another person’s photo?

Access to a generation does not establish permission to use or publish someone’s likeness. xAI’s current terms make users responsible for the necessary rights, licenses, notices, and consents, and its policy prohibits non-consensual intimate imagery involving identifiable people.

Is Grok Imagine free?

The current U.S. App Store listing describes the app as free with in-app purchases, but it does not establish that every model or feature is free. Subscription, regional, age, and account requirements may differ.

The Bottom Line

Grok Imagine’s launch story is real, but its current product description is not frozen in 2025. The service now emphasizes six-second Video 1.5 Fast clips with sound, while the “Spicy” feature’s current availability remains undocumented across accounts and regions. Treat generated media as watermarked, moderated, rights-sensitive content—and never use it to create or distribute non-consensual intimate imagery.
