If a WhatsApp wedding invitation asks you to install an Android app, don’t install it. An .apk is an Android app installer—not an invitation image or ordinary document. India’s Cyber Swachhta Kendra warned that a SpyMax remote-access trojan was distributed through fake wedding-invitation apps and could steal sensitive information after installation and access to permissions. Simply receiving or viewing a normal invitation image is not the risk described in that alert.
How the WhatsApp wedding-invitation scam works
- A message prompts a download. The invitation may arrive as a link or file. The Cyber Swachhta Kendra alert identifies a sample named
Wedding Invitation[.]apk. - The recipient installs the APK. Unlike a picture or document, an APK asks an Android user to install an app. Don’t proceed with an unsolicited installer, even if the message appears to come from someone you know.
- The app requests powerful permissions. In the described SpyMax campaign, requested permissions included Accessibility, notification access, SMS, permission to install packages, and “Set as Home App.”
- After installation, the malware may collect information. The alert says the app could steal contacts, SMS messages, bank OTPs, notification content, keystrokes, and other device information. It also says the app may hide its launcher icon. These are risks associated with installing the malicious app and granting access—not with merely receiving a WhatsApp message.
One reported case illustrates the potential stakes, but not a typical outcome: The Indian Express reported on July 21, 2026, that a Bengaluru forest department official allegedly lost nearly ₹10 lakh after receiving a WhatsApp wedding-invitation link. Police reportedly suspected APK-based phishing that exposed banking credentials. This is an individual reported allegation, not evidence that every incident follows the same method or results in a similar loss.
APK or invitation image: what is the difference?
| What you receive | What it does | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A normal image or document | Can be viewed as an invitation; it does not ask you to install an Android app. | Use ordinary caution with unexpected messages and links. |
An .apk file |
Requests installation of an Android application. | Do not install an unsolicited APK received through WhatsApp. |
How to protect your Android phone
- Install apps only from authorized app stores. Cyber Swachhta Kendra advises users to avoid APKs from outside Google Play.
- Keep Android and its security patches up to date, and enable Google Play Protect.
- Check whether an app’s requested permissions fit its purpose. Be especially wary of Accessibility, SMS, notification access, or permission to install other packages when requested by an unknown or unverified app.
- Do not disclose financial details to unknown people. Union Bank of India’s Cyber Security Customer Awareness Guide warns against downloading APKs from WhatsApp links because they may disguise malicious apps as useful software.
If you already installed the APK
If the app requested sensitive permissions, its icon has disappeared, or your phone or accounts are behaving unexpectedly, treat the situation seriously. The Cyber Swachhta Kendra alert describes hidden-icon behavior and sensitive access in this campaign, but the available guidance does not provide a complete cleanup procedure for every Android device.
- Contact your bank promptly if you see unusual transactions or suspect that banking information or OTPs were exposed. Use your bank’s official contact details.
- Report suspected cyber fraud in India. Union Bank’s guide lists the 1930 helpline and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal as reporting routes. Reporting does not guarantee that lost money will be recovered.
- Get device-specific help. Contact your phone manufacturer or a qualified incident-response professional for advice on securing and cleaning the device. Avoid entering banking credentials on a phone you suspect may be compromised until you have appropriate guidance.
What the warning does—and does not—cover
The Cyber Swachhta Kendra / CERT-In SpyMax alert was issued on June 25, 2025, and concerns fake wedding-invitation apps distributed through messaging platforms, including WhatsApp. CERT-In’s activity page, updated October 2, 2026, lists other campaigns: a June 2026 WhatsApp Desktop/Web campaign involving malicious VBScript attachments and a March 2026 Android campaign involving fake RTO/e-Challan APKs. Those are separate campaigns; the page does not identify them as SpyMax wedding-invitation attacks.
