To pay by tapping your phone in a store, you add a supported card to Wallet and tap at a compatible terminal. The names describe related parts of the payment experience, not two identical apps competing for the same job.
Google Wallet vs. Google Pay: the practical difference

Google Wallet Help states: “Google Wallet is a secure & private digital wallet that gives you quick access to payments cards, passes, tickets, keys, or IDs that you choose to store on it.” It describes Google Pay as how you pay online, in apps, and when you tap to pay where Google Pay is accepted. How phone tap to pay works on Android
For an in-store payment, the supported payment card is saved in Wallet. NFC lets the phone communicate with a contactless terminal, where Google Pay or contactless branding may be shown. Google’s setup pages use both “Google Pay” for the default payment app and “Wallet” for the default NFC wallet app. Follow the current prompts on your Android phone and in Wallet; the different labels do not by themselves indicate separate tap-to-pay capabilities. What you need
- A supported Android phone with NFC turned on. A phone without NFC cannot be set up for tap to pay.
- A supported payment method in a country where the feature is available.
- A screen lock and a phone that meets Google’s security requirements.
- Wallet or the payment app set as the default according to the current Android and Wallet setup prompts.
Google lists rooted devices, phones with custom ROMs or unlocked bootloaders, and devices with uncertified software as examples that may not meet its security requirements. For downloading and using Google Wallet, Google lists Android 9, a valid Google Account, and up-to-date Google Play Services and Google Wallet. In a shop or on transit
Use the supported card saved in Wallet and tap the phone on a contactless terminal displaying Google Pay or contactless payment branding. NFC and the setup requirements above must be in place. Google’s instructions for paying in stores

Passes and other saved items
Wallet can hold supported passes, tickets, keys, IDs, and other items as well as payment cards. Which items you can add depends on your country, device, and participating partners. Google Wallet Help and Google’s availability information
Sending money to another person
Google’s country and region information lists sending money to friends and family in India and Singapore. Do not assume peer-to-peer payments are available elsewhere; check the current options for your location. Google Pay Help

Why a card or feature may not be available
Google Wallet support depends on more than whether your bank card works for contactless purchases in person. The issuer and the specific card must support adding it to Wallet; Google cautions that a physical card’s contactless capability alone does not guarantee compatibility. Features, payment methods, and passes also vary by country or region, device, issuer, and participating partner. Check Google’s country and feature availability and supported payment methods, or ask your bank about the card if setup is declined.

What to check if tap to pay does not work
- Check NFC: Make sure NFC is available on your phone and turned on. Without it, tap to pay cannot be set up.
- Check the default payment app: Follow the prompts in Android settings and Google Wallet to select the default payment or NFC wallet app. Google’s wording varies between its setup pages.
- Check screen lock and device security: Set a screen lock and confirm the phone meets Google’s security requirements. Rooting, a custom ROM, an unlocked bootloader, or uncertified software can prevent setup.
- Check the country and card: Confirm that tap to pay is available where you are and that your issuer supports your particular card in Wallet. If the bank declines setup, contact the issuer rather than assuming the app is broken.
- Check the account profile and software: Google Wallet requires a valid Google Account, Android 9, and current Google Play Services and Wallet, and it must be used from a personal rather than work profile.
