Google Smart Compose is an AI-assisted autocomplete feature, not a standalone chatbot or a complete email-writing service. As you type in supported Google apps, it predicts a likely continuation in lighter-colored inline text. Press Tab on a computer, swipe across the suggestion on mobile, or simply continue typing to ignore it.
Smart Compose is most useful for routine phrases, acknowledgements, scheduling messages, and sign-offs. It can save keystrokes, but it does not verify facts, understand your full intent, research a topic, or reliably produce a complete professional message from a blank page. That larger drafting task belongs to separate tools such as Gemini’s Help me write.
What Google Smart Compose actually does
Smart Compose watches the text you are entering and proposes a short continuation based on the words already on the page and the surrounding context. The proposal usually appears as pale or gray inline text immediately after your cursor.

Smart Compose might suggest a likely continuation such as get back to you shortly. If it fits, press Tab to insert it. If it does not, keep typing. Your next keystrokes replace or reject the proposal, and accepted text can be edited like anything else.
Google originally described Smart Compose as capable of suggesting greetings, common phrases, complete sentences, contextual transitions, and closings. Its basic design, however, has remained autocomplete: it helps finish writing that you have already started rather than independently composing and researching an entire message. Google’s original Smart Compose announcement describes that launch-era behavior.
Practical rule: treat Smart Compose as a fast wording suggestion. Do not treat it as a source of truth.

Availability depends on the Google product, account type, language, country or region, Workspace edition, administrator settings, and the particular app version. The controls are not identical across Gmail, Chat, and Google Docs.
| Product | What Smart Compose does | Documented availability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | Suggests inline continuations while composing or replying to email. | Google currently documents English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Account and smart-feature settings can affect availability. |
| Google Chat | Provides predictive suggestions while composing messages on the web and desktop, including Chat inside Gmail. | Google currently documents the same five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Chat has its own control path. |
| Google Docs | Suggests inline text while editing documents. Related Smart Compose support also covers comments in supported Workspace editors. | Google’s current Docs Editors Help page documents English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French for work or school accounts. Google says Smart Compose cannot be turned off in Sheets. |
| Google Slides, Sheets, and Drawings | Inline writing suggestions are available in supported editing areas; comments are also covered in Google’s Workspace documentation. | Eligibility and the available controls vary by editor and account. Do not assume that a setting in Docs applies identically to every editor. |
| Gemini in Gmail and Docs | Generates longer drafts, rewrites, tone changes, and other prompted writing assistance. | This is separate from classic Smart Compose. It has different plan, language, geography, and administrator requirements. |
For current product-specific details, compare Gmail’s Smart Compose instructions, Google Chat’s Smart Compose instructions, and Google Docs Editors Help. Google can change availability and labels without making every product behave the same way.
How to turn Smart Compose on or off
Gmail on a computer
- Open Gmail.
- Click Settings, then select See all settings.
- Remain on the General tab.
- Scroll to Smart Compose.
- Select Writing suggestions on or Writing suggestions off.
When a suggestion appears while composing, press Tab to accept it. Continue typing to reject it. The current desktop path is documented in Google’s Gmail desktop help; older guides that instruct readers to enable a new Gmail interface or experimental access are obsolete.
Gmail on Android
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Select the Google Account you want to change.
- Turn Smart Compose on or off.
To accept a mobile suggestion, swipe across the suggested text. Google documents this route in its Gmail Android instructions.
Gmail on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Under Compose and Reply, turn Smart compose on or off.
Swipe across the suggestion to accept it. The menu wording and placement can vary slightly by app version or language. See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions if the option is not where you expect.
Change Smart Compose personalization in Gmail
Personalization attempts to make suggestions resemble your usual writing style. On a computer:
- Open Gmail and select Settings → See all settings.
- Stay on General.
- Find Smart Compose personalization.
- Choose Personalization on or Personalization off.
Google says personalized suggestions are private to the account holder, including in Workspace environments where an administrator cannot see a user’s personalized suggestions. That privacy statement does not mean that no data is processed: Gmail still needs to process relevant information to provide its features. Gmail’s Smart Compose documentation explains the setting and personalization behavior.
Google Chat on the web or desktop
- Open Google Chat.
- Click Settings.
- Under Smart Compose, enable or disable Enable predictive writing suggestions as you compose a message on web and desktop.
If you use Chat inside Gmail, Google documents a separate route: Gmail → Settings → See all settings → Chat and Meet → Manage chat settings → Smart Compose. Accept a Chat suggestion with Tab. Do not assume the Gmail and standalone Chat switches are interchangeable. Google Chat Help contains the current control path.

In a supported file on a computer:
- Open the file.
- Select Tools → Preferences.
- Check or uncheck Show Smart Compose suggestions.
- Click OK.
In Docs, accept a suggestion with Tab or the right-arrow key. On Android or iOS, swipe right over the suggested text. Google says that switching Smart Compose off in Docs removes suggestions from the main editing window and comments. Its current documentation also says that Smart Compose cannot be turned off in Google Sheets. See Google Docs Editors Help for the current product and account qualifications.

Smart Compose, Smart Reply, proofreading, and Gemini are different tools
Google’s writing features can look similar because they all use suggestions or generated text, but they solve different problems.
| Tool | What it produces | Best use | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Compose | An inline continuation of text you are already typing. | Routine phrases, acknowledgements, transitions, scheduling language, and sign-offs. | Research, fact-checking, judgment, or complete drafting. |
| Smart Reply | Short suggested replies to a received message. | Quick responses such as a simple acknowledgement or confirmation. | A considered reply to a complicated or sensitive message. |
| Grammar and spelling tools | Corrections or warnings about mechanics. | Typos, spelling, grammar, and autocorrect. | Choice of facts, argument, tone, or policy. |
| Gemini Help me write | A prompted draft, rewrite, expansion, shortening, or tone adjustment. | Starting from a blank page or turning notes into a longer draft. | Human review and verification of generated content. |
| Gmail templates | Fixed text that you deliberately save and insert. | Approved, repeatable support replies, notices, and process messages. | Adapting automatically to a new situation. |
Google describes Smart Compose and Smart Reply as separate Gmail features. Likewise, Gmail’s Help me write documentation describes Gemini as a separate tool for generating and refining drafts.
Smart Compose versus Gemini Help me write
The simplest distinction is completion versus generation:
- Smart Compose predicts what might come next while you type. It is quick, unobtrusive, and normally asks you to accept each suggestion.
- Help me write can create a draft from a prompt, rewrite existing text, change its tone or length, and in supported Gmail experiences use relevant email or Drive context to personalize a draft.
Gmail’s Gemini documentation also describes a Sources control for inspecting supporting material when Gemini uses contextual information. That does not turn the result into an automatically verified message; you still need to check whether the cited context is relevant and whether the final wording says what you intend.
Gemini has broader language and plan support than classic Smart Compose in some products, but personal-account availability remains subject to Google’s supported language and geography rules. Google’s supported-languages documentation is the appropriate source for current Gemini eligibility.
How the technology works
Google’s published architecture
Google’s launch-era research describes Smart Compose as a large-scale neural language model that generates suggestions in real time. In simplified terms, the system receives the text and context available to the writing surface, estimates likely continuations, and returns one or more candidates quickly enough to display while the user is typing.
This is a different engineering problem from generating a long answer. A long-form assistant can take several seconds and produce a large block of text. Smart Compose must be useful without interrupting the rhythm of typing, so latency and serving efficiency are central to its design.
In its original technical explanation, Google identified three difficult constraints:
- Latency: the target was ideally around 100 milliseconds for a suggestion so that typing would not feel delayed.
- Scale: Google described the challenge of serving a large and diverse Gmail population, citing more than 1.4 billion Gmail users in 2018.
- Privacy and fairness: Google said its researchers did not have access to readable email content during the research process and tested the system for memorization and undesirable behavior.
Those figures and design details come from Google’s 2019 research explanation and the related peer-reviewed Smart Compose publication. They explain the original system, not necessarily every detail of the production system operating today.
Why the old model description should not be treated as a current specification
Google’s public research from 2018 and 2019 is valuable, but it does not establish that the exact model size, training process, serving stack, or inference hardware remains unchanged. Google product coverage has historically described Smart Compose as using a hybrid language-generation model and Tensor Processing Units for inference, but that should be read as attributed launch-era context rather than a guarantee about every current deployment. Google’s Gmail AI overview provides that product description.
Google also said the system was trained on billions of phrases and sentences and that it tested for memorization. That should not be casually rewritten as Google trained Smart Compose on every user’s private email. The public research does not support that simplified claim, and current Smart Compose implementation details are not fully disclosed.

Historical scale claims
Google reported that Smart Compose saved more than 1 billion characters per week in one mobile rollout, while later Google coverage cited approximately 2 billion characters per week. These are historical, Google-reported product figures, not independent measurements or a current performance benchmark. Google’s mobile announcement and its later Gmail anniversary coverage provide the relevant context.

Accuracy: fluent wording is not verified truth
Smart Compose predicts a plausible sequence of words. It does not function as a fact-checker, answer engine, or reliable source of company-specific policy. A suggestion can sound polished and still contain an incorrect:
- name or pronoun;
- date, time, or time zone;
- price, quantity, or deadline;
- promise or commitment;
- technical detail;
- description of an event or decision;
- tone for the relationship or situation.
Google warns in its Gmail Help documentation that Smart Compose suggestions may be factually incorrect. The Docs Help page gives the same general warning for its editor integrations. Google also acknowledges that language models can reflect human cognitive biases.
Before sending: verify every name, date, number, deadline, attachment reference, and commitment. Never accept a suggestion merely because it sounds natural.

In 2018, contemporary reporting described Google removing gendered pronoun suggestions after concerns that Smart Compose could make unsupported gender assumptions. That is a historical example of the difficulty of deploying predictive language systems, not a complete description of the feature’s current behavior. Engadget’s contemporaneous report documents the incident.
Privacy, personalization, and AI training are separate questions
Privacy discussions about Smart Compose often collapse several different issues into one. A more accurate explanation separates three layers.
1. What data is used to provide the feature?
Gmail says it uses Gmail data to provide intelligent features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, inbox categories, and spam detection. The relevant question is therefore not whether Gmail processes information at all, but which features are enabled, what controls apply to the account, and what Google’s current terms and privacy documentation say for that account and region. See How Gmail protects your privacy.
2. What does personalization do?
Smart Compose personalization is intended to make suggestions better match the user’s customary style. Google says the private personalized suggestions generated for an account are visible only to that account holder. A Workspace administrator can control some settings, but Google says the administrator cannot see a user’s private personalized suggestions.
Recommended Free Tools
Personalization is not the same as understanding. A suggestion that resembles your previous style may still misunderstand the audience, current facts, purpose, or emotional context of the message.
3. Is this the same as training a general generative-AI model?
No broad statement should be made without identifying the product and account type. Google’s Workspace privacy commitments for Gemini state that customer data is not used to train generative-AI models outside the customer’s domain without permission under the applicable Workspace arrangements. That is a specific commitment concerning Workspace Gemini services; it should not automatically be transferred to every historical Smart Compose implementation or to consumer Gemini products.
For the relevant Workspace terms and commitments, consult Google’s Workspace Privacy Hub. The safe editorial and workplace rule is to avoid putting sensitive information into any optional AI feature unless your organization’s policy permits it and you understand the applicable controls.
The broader Smart Features and Personalization switch
Google provides a broader smart-features setting for Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Google’s administrator documentation says this setting can govern Smart Compose in Gmail, Smart Compose in Chat, Smart Reply, automatic categorization, summary cards, and other intelligent experiences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsequently, turning off the broad setting may remove more than inline writing suggestions. It can also affect other conveniences until the setting is turned back on. Google currently documents that smart features are off by default for accounts in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, while other regions use a different default. Workspace administrators can set defaults for their organizations, and Google says changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate. These are account and regional controls, not a universal guarantee for every Google product. Google’s Workspace smart-features documentation explains the current behavior.

Who should use Smart Compose?
Good use cases
- Routine internal emails.
- Meeting confirmations and scheduling messages.
- Short acknowledgements.
- Common greetings, transitions, and sign-offs.
- Repeated personal correspondence.
- Writers who already know what they want to say and want to type it faster.
- Language learners working in one of the supported languages who want help recognizing common phrasing.
Smart Compose can also reduce the amount of typing required for some users with repetitive-strain concerns or other accessibility needs. That is a practical possibility, not evidence of a broad clinical benefit. Screen-reader users should know that Gmail can announce a Smart Compose suggestion after a short period of inactivity, and Tab accepts it. Google documents this behavior in its Gmail screen-reader help.
Use it cautiously
Professional writing is not automatically unsuitable, but the writer should review every completion. The feature can help with connective language in a normal business email while still being inappropriate for the factual or substantive parts of that email.
Disable it or ignore it for high-stakes writing
Write carefully without relying on suggestions when preparing:
- legal, regulatory, or contractual language;
- medical information;
- financial commitments or pricing;
- employment, disciplinary, or performance communications;
- security procedures;
- customer disputes;
- sensitive personal messages;
- deadlines, guarantees, or promises that must be exact.
The right conclusion is not that AI assistance is always unsafe. It is that Smart Compose is a wording aid, not a substitute for judgment, verification, or authorship.
What to do when Smart Compose is missing
There is no single universal fix because Gmail, Chat, Docs, mobile apps, and Workspace administration expose different controls. Check the following in order:
- Confirm the language. Gmail and Chat currently document five languages, while Docs documents a different four-language set for work or school accounts. A supported keyboard or browser does not make Smart Compose supported in every Google editor.
- Check the product-specific switch. Gmail, Chat, and Docs have separate settings. Turning on Gmail Smart Compose does not necessarily enable Chat or Docs suggestions.
- Check the broader smart-features setting. If it is disabled, related features can be unavailable even when an individual control appears enabled.
- Check the account and Workspace edition. Work, school, nonprofit, personal, and managed accounts may receive different features or rollout timing.
- Check regional defaults. Smart features may be off by default in the EEA, Japan, Switzerland, and the UK.
- Check administrator policy. A Workspace administrator can restrict or configure relevant Gmail and smart-feature settings.
- Update the mobile app. Google’s Chat documentation notes that some computer changes may not be reflected in mobile apps and recommends updating the app when settings do not match.
- Identify the feature correctly. Keyboard prediction, browser autocomplete, Smart Reply, Smart Compose, and Gemini Help me write are different systems.
If a suggestion is simply wrong or distracting, continue typing to reject it. If you already accepted it, delete or edit it as ordinary text. For a sensitive message, write the factual content first and use any suggestion only for optional connective wording.
Why turning off Smart Compose may not remove Gemini prompts
This is one of the most common points of confusion in current Gmail. Smart Compose and Gemini’s Help me write are separate capabilities with separate controls.
Turning off the Gmail Smart Compose switch removes inline predictive completions. It does not necessarily remove a Gemini drafting button, prompt, or side-panel feature. Gemini access may be controlled by a separate personal-account plan, Google Workspace subscription, administrator policy, geography, or language setting. Google’s Help me write documentation and Workspace smart-features documentation should be used separately from the Smart Compose instructions.
In other words, if your goal is to remove every AI-related writing prompt, switching off Smart Compose alone may not accomplish it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Smart Compose compared with practical alternatives
Use Gmail templates for approved repeatable text
Templates are better than probabilistic suggestions when the wording must remain stable, such as a support response, compliance notice, internal process instruction, or standard customer message. A template will not automatically adapt to a new situation, but that predictability can be an advantage.
Use Smart Reply for very short responses
Smart Reply is designed to suggest short responses to messages you have received. Smart Compose works while you are writing and predicts the next text. A one-tap acknowledgement is a Smart Reply use case; finishing a custom sentence is a Smart Compose use case.

Help me write is the more appropriate Google tool when you need a draft from a prompt, a rewrite of rough notes, a different tone, or a shorter or longer version. Use proofreading tools for mechanical correctness
Grammar, spelling, and autocorrect features address mechanical errors. Smart Compose predicts likely wording. Neither one decides whether a promise is authorized, a number is correct, or an argument is sound. Gmail documents these writing aids separately in its write and send email help.
How Smart Compose evolved
Smart Compose is not a new standalone Google AI application. It began as an embedded Gmail feature and expanded across Google’s products:
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| May 8, 2018 | Google announced Smart Compose for Gmail as an AI-powered drafting aid. |
| May 16, 2018 | Google Research published technical details about latency, scale, privacy, fairness, and neural language modeling. |
| October 9, 2018 | Google announced mobile availability beginning with Pixel 3 and added Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese to the original language support. |
| April 1, 2019 | Google announced personalized Smart Compose suggestions and Workspace administrator controls. |
| February 18, 2020 | Smart Compose in Google Docs was announced as generally available for G Suite customers under the limitations stated at that time. |
| August 5, 2020 | Google announced Smart Compose support in Docs for Android and iOS. |
| January 5, 2021 | Smart Compose and spelling autocorrect were announced for Google Docs comments. |
| August 2, 2021 | Google announced Smart Compose for comments in Slides, Sheets, and Drawings. |
| June 30, 2023 | Google announced Smart Compose for Google Chat web users in five languages. |
| Current Google Workspace era | Google’s broader Gmail and Workspace AI coverage increasingly emphasizes Gemini features such as Help me write, summaries, contextual drafting, and personalization. |
For historical context, see Google’s announcements for Docs general availability, Docs mobile support, and Chat availability. Historical rollout restrictions should not be mistaken for current account eligibility; the current Help Center pages are the better source for present-day settings.
Final verdict: useful autocomplete, not an artificial author
Google Smart Compose can make everyday writing faster because it handles the predictable parts of language without requiring a separate prompt or panel. Its best use is narrow and practical: start the sentence yourself, accept a useful continuation, and keep control of the message.
Its limitations are equally important. Classic Smart Compose does not reliably research, reason, verify, or write a complete email from nothing. It can produce fluent but incorrect wording, and its availability and privacy controls vary across products, accounts, languages, and regions.
If you already know what you want to say, Smart Compose is a convenient low-friction assistant. If you need a complete draft, use an appropriate drafting tool such as Gemini Help me write—but review the result more carefully. If the message contains high-stakes facts or sensitive information, write and verify it yourself, regardless of which Google writing feature is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Smart Compose the same as Gemini?
No. Smart Compose is inline autocomplete that predicts the next words while you type. Gemini’s Help me write is a separate generative feature for creating or rewriting longer drafts from prompts and, where supported, relevant Gmail or Drive context.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can Smart Compose write a complete email?
It may occasionally suggest a complete sentence or longer phrase, but it is not designed to create a complete researched email from a blank page. Its primary function is to predict continuations inside text you are already writing.
Why do I not see Smart Compose in Gmail?
Check the language, Gmail’s Smart Compose switch, the broader smart-features setting, account or Workspace eligibility, regional defaults, administrator policies, and whether the app is current. Gmail, Chat, and Docs also have separate controls.
If I turn off Smart Compose, will Gemini Help me write disappear?
Not necessarily. Smart Compose and Gemini Help me write are separate features. Disabling inline suggestions may leave Gemini drafting controls visible, which may require separate account, plan, or administrator settings.
Is it safe to use Smart Compose for confidential or high-stakes messages?
Use caution. Google documents data processing for Gmail smart features and provides separate controls and Workspace commitments for certain services. Regardless of privacy settings, verify every generated name, date, number, promise, and factual claim, and follow your organization’s AI policy before using it with sensitive information.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Smart Compose is best understood as predictive text for Gmail, Chat, and supported Workspace editors. It is excellent for routine wording and saving keystrokes, but it is not a fact-checker, researcher, proofreader, or replacement for human judgment. Use it when you already know what you mean; review every suggestion before it represents you.
