A reported 40.2% year-over-year fall in Google Search referrals describes a particular publisher network—not every website. Independent data show fewer clicks when AI summaries appear, but the available evidence does not establish that AI Overviews alone caused the broader decline. If your own traffic is down, compare your site’s channels and equivalent time periods before drawing a conclusion.
What the 40.2% figure measures
Search Engine Journal reported that Chartbeat’s 2026 Publisher Playbook found Google Search referrals across its publisher network were down 40.2% from July 2025 to July 2026. The network skews toward news and media publishers, so the result should not be treated as a measurement of every publisher, industry or individual site.
There is also a metric caveat: the reported playbook does not make clear whether the year-over-year declines refer to raw channel pageviews or to each channel’s share of pageviews. Those are different measures. A lower share can result from other channels growing even if a channel’s pageviews do not fall by the same amount.

The preceding year’s reported comparison was a 21.9% decline. Both figures come from Chartbeat reporting as described by Search Engine Journal; the ambiguity about the underlying measure means they should not be read as a clean, directly comparable time series without further detail.

How other evidence compares
These findings address different populations, periods and measures. Referral counts show traffic arriving at sites; user-level click data describe behavior on search visits; an experiment can test a feature’s effect under specific conditions. They should not be collapsed into one estimate of how much AI Overviews reduced publisher traffic.
| Evidence | Period and scope | Reported result | What it establishes—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chartbeat, reported by Search Engine Journal (2026) | July 2025 to July 2026; Chartbeat’s publisher network, which skews toward news and media | Google Search referrals fell 40.2% year over year; the prior year’s reported decline was 21.9%. | A decline in this network comparison. The reporting does not clarify whether the measure is raw channel pageviews or channel share, and it does not isolate AI Overviews as the cause. |
| Chartbeat data cited by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (2026) | November 2024 to November 2025; more than 2,500 sites | Google organic referrals fell 33% globally and 38% in the United States. | A separate referral comparison over a different period and site group. The institute says it is unclear how much of the fall was due to AI Overviews. |
| Pew Research Center (2025) | March 2025; browsing data shared by 900 U.S. adults in a tracking panel | On visits with an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% on visits without a summary. A source link inside a summary was clicked in 1% of visits with a summary. | Observed behavior in the panel: traditional-result clicks were less common on visits with summaries. This does not by itself explain a network-wide year-over-year referral decline or prove why those visits differed. |
| Preregistered field experiment by Wang, Gleason, Bart, Wilson and Metaxa (2026 preprint) | 1,100 participants; a 10-day study period | Removing AI Overviews and AI Mode increased publisher click-through rates in the tested conditions. | Experimental evidence that the features affected click-through under those conditions. It is not evidence of a 40% effect on aggregate publisher traffic. |
| Google statement by Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search (August 6, 2025) | Google’s internal year-over-year data; the statement does not specify a comparable publisher-network sample in the cited account | Google said total organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year and average click quality increased. | Google’s characterization of its own data. It differs from independent network reporting and should be attributed to Google, not presented as an independent consensus. |
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to publisher sites?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline claim: AI search features can affect whether people click through in particular settings, and Pew observed fewer traditional-result clicks on visits where an AI summary appeared. The field experiment strengthens the case for a causal effect on click-through in its tested conditions because it removed AI features. Neither result quantifies how much those features explain an aggregate decline across publisher networks.

That distinction matters because referral trends can reflect multiple influences, while the available reports do not isolate all of them. The Reuters Institute notes that hard-news queries have largely been exempt from AI Overviews and that lifestyle or utility publishers may be more exposed. Exposure therefore may differ by the kind of content and queries a site depends on.

How to check whether your own Google traffic is falling
A network statistic is a reason to inspect your own data, not a diagnosis of your site. Make the comparison on a consistent basis and keep Search separate from Discover: both may send visits from Google, but a combined Google total can hide changes in one channel behind movement in another.

- Choose equivalent periods. Compare the same dates year over year, or use another clearly matched interval. Avoid interpreting an unusually busy or quiet period without considering seasonality.
- Separate channels and metrics. Review Google Search and Google Discover referrals separately. For each, distinguish pageviews or visits from its share of all site traffic; a change in share is not necessarily the same as a change in volume.
- Check whether the mix of your site changed. Compare similar sections or content groups across periods. A different mix of news, lifestyle, utility or other pages can make a whole-site trend difficult to interpret.
- Look for a pattern in your own reporting. Note when the decline began and whether it is concentrated in particular content groups or channels. Avoid attributing the timing to AI Overviews from correlation alone.
- State the conclusion at the right scale. Report what changed in your site’s chosen metric and period. Do not apply a network percentage to your site unless your own data support that comparison.
Chartbeat’s 2026 Publisher Playbook describes analysis of billions of monthly audience interactions across two years and highlights changes in search referrals, owned channels, loyal readers and content exposure to AI. That broader context is useful for understanding why publishers track more than one source of visits; it does not make the playbook’s network result a site-specific forecast.
