Short answer: Searchers cannot switch off Google AI Overviews completely, but they can choose the Web filter for a links-only results page. Website owners have a narrower option: Google Search Console’s Search generative AI control can include or exclude a property from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover. Excluding a property from those features does not de-index its pages, change ordinary Search ranking or remove normal Search listings. Separate controls—robots.txt, noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet—work at different layers, so choosing the wrong one can produce the opposite of the result you want.

Can searchers turn off Google AI Overviews?

No. Google describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature, comparable to knowledge panels, and says core features cannot be turned off. After submitting a query, select the Web filter to see a text-based page of links without an AI Overview for that results view.

The Web filter is a per-search viewing choice, not a permanent account setting. A later query can again show an AI Overview, and the filter does not alter what other people see or how Google processes your site.

What is the difference between the Web filter and excluding a website?

The Web filter changes a searcher’s presentation of results. The Search generative AI control changes whether a property’s content and links may be used in specified generative features. Neither option is a universal “turn off AI” switch for every Google product.

What does Google’s Search generative AI control do?

Google Search Console provides a property-level control for inclusion in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Google Discover. Google says the control rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. Availability and labels can change as Google updates Search Console, so check the current control name in the property you manage.

The control has three choices:

  • Include: the property can be considered for the covered generative features. This is the default when no parent-property override applies.
  • Exclude: the property’s links and content are prevented from appearing in the covered generative features, and crawled content from the property is not used as input for an AI response or preview.
  • Inherit from parent: a child property follows the setting of its parent property when that hierarchy applies.

The setting is narrower than a Search ban. It governs the named generative surfaces, not every place Google may display, crawl or index your content.

How do I set Include, Exclude or Inherit?

  1. Sign in to Google Search Console and select the property you want to manage.
  2. Open the property’s Search generative AI control.
  3. Choose Include, Exclude or Inherit from parent, according to the scope you need.
  4. Save the change and record the date, property and selected option in your site-change log.
  5. After propagation time has passed, check representative pages and queries in the relevant Search features. A missing AI result is not proof that a page is de-indexed; check ordinary Search separately.

Google documents this as a property setting rather than a page-by-page snippet editor. If only a subset of URLs should be treated differently, use page-level directives for the specific Search outcome instead of assuming the property control can target individual pages.

Does Exclude remove a site from Google Search?

No. Google says the Search generative AI control only affects specified generative-AI features and is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search. Pages can continue to be crawled, indexed, ranked and shown in ordinary Search, including conventional result snippets.

Exclusion also does not override separate participation choices in products such as Merchant Center or Google Ads. Those systems have their own settings and eligibility rules.

What should a site owner expect after exclusion?

  • AI Overviews, AI Mode and covered generative Discover features should stop using the property’s eligible links or content once the setting propagates.
  • Ordinary blue-link results can remain unchanged.
  • Existing caches or delayed processing can make a few pages appear to lag behind the setting.
  • A competitor’s page, a quoted third-party source or a user-generated copy can still appear in an AI answer; excluding your property does not erase information about your topic from the web.

How quickly does an AI-feature exclusion take effect?

Google says changes generally take a few days. In many cases, content is excluded within one to two days after the control goes live, but caching and propagation across Google’s systems can make some URLs take longer.

Treat the one-to-two-day period as a typical window, not a service-level guarantee. Keep the setting in place while propagation completes, then test multiple representative URLs rather than relying on one search result.

What if a page still appears after the expected window?

  1. Confirm that you changed the correct Search Console property and that the saved choice is Exclude, not Inherit from parent with an unexpected parent value.
  2. Check whether the result is an ordinary Search listing rather than an AI Overview, AI Mode response or generative Discover feature.
  3. Try a fresh browser session and several queries; cached displays can outlast the underlying setting.
  4. Check whether the visible text comes from another property, a syndicated copy or a user-generated page.
  5. Allow additional time for propagation before treating the setting as ineffective.

Is the Search generative AI control the same as Google-Extended or noindex?

No. These mechanisms have different targets. Google identifies Google-Extended as a separate mechanism for limiting training use, while noindex tells Google not to keep a crawlable page in the Search index. The Search generative AI control is specifically about inclusion in named generative Search and Discover features.

Do not substitute one control for another. Excluding a property from AI Overviews does not express a training-use preference, and adding noindex is far more disruptive because it removes the page from ordinary Search when Google can crawl and see the directive.

What is the difference between robots.txt, noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet?

They act at different stages: crawl access, indexing and result presentation. Select the directive based on the outcome you need, not on the fact that all four are often discussed together.

Control Primary target Indexing effect Ranking effect Can the URL still appear? Implementation Typical timing
robots.txt Crawl access Does not directly remove an already indexed URL Not a ranking instruction Yes; Google may know the URL but lack page content Site-wide or path rules in robots.txt Not stated
noindex Ordinary Search inclusion Removes a crawlable page from Google’s index Removes that page’s normal Search listing rather than merely changing its snippet Generally no once processed, although discovery signals can vary Page-level meta directive or equivalent HTTP response header Not stated
nosnippet Result preview URL remains eligible for indexing Does not itself change ranking Yes, but Google is instructed not to show a text snippet, video preview or rich-result visual elements for the page Page-level directive Not stated
max-snippet Maximum text-preview length URL remains eligible for indexing Does not itself change ranking Yes, with a snippet limited to the specified maximum where Google applies the directive Page-level directive Not stated
Search generative AI control AI Overviews, AI Mode and covered generative Discover features Does not de-index pages Google says it is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other Search Yes in ordinary Search; no in the covered generative features after exclusion propagates Search Console property setting Often 1–2 days after the control goes live; caching can extend this

Why can robots.txt undermine noindex or nosnippet?

Google must be able to crawl a page to read page-level directives. If robots.txt blocks Googlebot, Google may know that a URL exists but cannot reliably see its noindex, nosnippet or max-snippet instruction. A crawl block is therefore not a dependable way to enforce a page-level indexing or snippet rule.

Which control should I choose?

  • Use noindex when the intended outcome is exclusion from ordinary Google Search.
  • Use nosnippet when the URL may remain searchable but its text preview should not be shown.
  • Use max-snippet when a shorter preview is acceptable and you want to set a maximum length rather than suppressing the preview entirely.
  • Use robots.txt to control crawling of areas that should not be fetched, while recognizing that it is not an indexing-removal command.
  • Use the Search generative AI control when the specific objective is to exclude a property from the covered AI Search and Discover features without changing ordinary Search.

How do I control Google featured snippets?

Publishers cannot request or guarantee a featured snippet. Google’s systems programmatically select a short extract when they determine that it may answer a query, and the extract can appear at the top of results, in People also ask or alongside Knowledge Graph information.

If a page must remain eligible for ordinary Search but should not supply a text extract, nosnippet is the relevant page-level control. If a limited preview is acceptable, max-snippet sets a ceiling; Google may still choose a shorter snippet for other reasons.

What content policies affect featured snippets?

Google documents feature-specific policies covering dangerous, deceptive, harassing, hateful, manipulated-media, medical, sexually explicit, terrorist, violent and vulgar content. It also cites certain public-interest claims that contradict established consensus or lack supporting evidence. Compliance does not create eligibility or guarantee selection; the systems decide which extract, if any, best serves a query.

What is AI Mode, and how does it differ from an AI Overview?

Google describes AI Mode as an AI search experience built for follow-up questions and deeper exploration. It can divide a query into subtopics and search for those subtopics simultaneously. When confidence in an AI response is not high enough, Google may provide a set of web links instead.

An AI Overview is an AI-generated summary shown within a conventional results page, while AI Mode is a more extended conversational destination. The Search generative AI control covers both, so an Exclude choice is not limited to the first summary a searcher sees.

How should I verify what Google is showing?

Use separate checks for each layer: inspect ordinary Search for indexing, inspect snippets for preview behavior, and test the AI surfaces named by the control. Record the URL, query, date, device and result type, because a result can change as Google refreshes its index, cache or feature eligibility.

  • Indexing check: confirm whether the page appears in ordinary Search; exclusion from AI features should not be interpreted as a de-indexing event.
  • Snippet check: look for whether a text extract, video preview or rich-result visual element is present when a page-level directive is intended to suppress it.
  • AI check: distinguish AI Overview, AI Mode and generative Discover from standard links, then allow for propagation and caching.
  • Directive check: make sure Googlebot can crawl the page if you rely on page-level instructions.

Can I trust an AI Overview as the only source?

No. Google warns that AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends thinking critically and checking multiple sources for important information. Treat the summary as a starting point, open the linked pages, and verify material claims against more than one reliable source.

This matters operationally for publishers as well as readers: an inaccurate summary can misstate a page even when the underlying source is sound, while an exclusion setting controls participation in a feature rather than the factual quality of every answer about your subject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will excluding my property from AI features reduce my SEO traffic?

Google says the exclusion is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search, so it is not intended to lower ordinary Search rankings. It can still change the amount of traffic that would have arrived through an AI Overview, AI Mode or covered generative Discover result.

Can I exclude only one article from AI Overviews while leaving the rest of my site included?

The documented Search generative AI control is property-level, with Include, Exclude and Inherit from parent choices. For a single URL, page-level directives such as noindex or nosnippet affect ordinary Search outcomes, but they are not described as a per-URL replacement for the property-level generative-AI setting.

Does a robots.txt disallow hide a URL that Google already knows about?

Not necessarily. Google can retain awareness of a blocked URL and may show it without page content, because crawling and indexing are separate stages. If the goal is removal from the index, Google must be able to crawl the page and see a noindex directive.

Why is my snippet shorter than the max-snippet value I set?

max-snippet establishes a maximum, not a promised length. Google can choose a shorter preview because of query relevance, available text, other page signals or its own presentation rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Google’s AI features quote my page after I select Exclude?

The exclusion is intended to prevent the property’s links and crawled content from appearing in the covered generative features or being used as input for an AI response or preview after propagation. It does not remove third-party copies, references to your topic or ordinary Search results, so other sources may still be used.
