Google Play Store rolling out ‘Collections’ app shortcut is a genuine Android feature, not a separate app. The shortcut opens Google Play’s full-screen Collections hub, where installed-app content, recommendations, continuation items, and an App library are organized. Google documents support for Android 10 and later in 13 countries, subject to account and server-side availability.

The Collections option began appearing in the Play Store icon’s long-press menu during the February 2025 rollout. The shortcut sits alongside familiar options such as My apps, and users can drag it onto the home screen as a separate icon.

Key takeaways

  • Google Play Store rolling out ‘Collections’ app shortcut adds a direct launcher route to the full-screen Collections experience; it does not install a new application.
  • Collections requires Android 10 or later, a primary Google Account signed in to Google Play, and a supported country: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, or the United States.
  • The shortcut appeared in the February 2025 rollout, with Play Store version 45.0.21 reported as a broad-rollout version; version 45.0.21 is historical context, not a permanent 2026 requirement.
  • Collections can show categories such as Watch, Game, Read, Listen, Food, Shop, and Social, but categories and available content vary by region and app participation.
  • Removing the Collections icon from the home screen removes that shortcut only; it does not necessarily disable Collections or Play personalization.

What is the Google Play Store Collections app shortcut?

The Google Play Store Collections app shortcut is an Android launcher shortcut that opens the full-screen Collections hub directly. Collections is a Play-powered experience for organizing content and installed apps, while the shortcut is only one way to access that experience.

To open the shortcut, find the Google Play Store icon on the home screen or in the app drawer, then tap and hold it. Select Collections from the shortcut menu. On launchers that support searching app shortcuts, including Pixel Launcher, Collections may also be discoverable through shortcut search.

The rollout was reported on February 17, 2025, and updated on February 24, 2025. The February 2025 rollout report associated broad availability with Google Play Store version 45.0.21, although Google’s server-side activation meant that installing a particular version did not guarantee that every user would see the option.

How do you add Collections to the Android home screen?

You can turn the Play Store menu entry into a permanent home-screen icon by dragging the shortcut out of the long-press menu.

  1. Find the Google Play Store icon.
  2. Tap and hold the icon until the shortcut menu appears.
  3. Press and hold Collections in the menu.
  4. Drag Collections to an empty area of the home screen and release it.

The resulting icon launches Collections directly. The home-screen icon is separate from the Play Store icon, the Collections widget, and the other Play Store shortcuts.

What does Collections show?

Collections brings together content from participating installed apps and organizes that content into a full-screen feed. Depending on the country, installed apps, app integrations, and available data, the experience can include content currently in progress, recommendations, new app content, shopping activity, category pages, and an App library.

Google’s documented categories include:

  • Watch for video and other viewing content
  • Game for games and game-related activity
  • Read for reading content
  • Listen for audio and music content
  • Food for food-related apps and activity
  • Shop for shopping-related content
  • Social for social apps and activity

Google warns that categories such as Shopping, Food, Social, and Travel may not be available in every region. Google’s Collections support documentation also describes groupings such as Top used and Recently added, alongside the App library.

Does every installed app provide recommendations?

No. Every installed or Play-updated app does not necessarily provide personalized Collections recommendations. The App library can still organize installed apps even when an app does not integrate with Collections, but recommendation cards and “continue where you left off” content depend on app participation and current app-provided data.

Google says Collections recommendations come from participating apps rather than being generated solely by Google Play. An app may therefore appear in the library without contributing a rich feed, or the feed may be sparse if only a small number of installed apps support the relevant content surfaces.

For developers, Google’s Engage SDK documentation describes a way to publish personalized recommendations and continuation content to Collections, Entertainment Space, and the Play Store. Google currently labels the Engage SDK program as a developer preview; that status applies to developer integration and access, not necessarily to the consumer Collections interface itself.

What is the difference between the Collections shortcut and the widget?

The Collections shortcut opens the full-screen experience when you choose it, while the Collections widget places information or an entry point on the home screen without requiring a long press on the Play Store icon.

Access method What it does Home-screen space
Collections app shortcut Opens the full-screen Collections feed directly Uses one icon when dragged to the home screen
Collections widget Shows Collections content or an entry point at a glance Uses a widget area; layouts can range from compact to feed-style
Google Play Store icon Opens the Play Store and exposes shortcuts such as Collections and My apps after a long press Uses the normal Play Store icon
Normal app drawer Launches installed apps without requiring Collections integration Does not add a Collections icon

Google introduced Collections through Play surfaces that included a widget, and later rollout reporting identified the app shortcut as a direct route into the full-screen hub. The Google Play announcement about Collections describes the widget and personalization controls, while a report on the Collections widget documents its multiple layouts.

Is Collections replacing the My apps shortcut?

No. Collections and My apps are separate Play Store shortcuts. Collections may change the order or position of items in the long-press menu, but it does not replace the My apps function.

The change can still disrupt muscle memory. Someone accustomed to long-pressing Play Store and selecting the bottom menu item may accidentally open Collections after the new shortcut appears. Check the label rather than relying on the old menu position.

Which Android phones and countries support Collections?

Google’s current support documentation requires Android 10 or later and a user signed in to the primary Google Account in the Play Store. The documented country list contains 13 markets, so Collections should not be described as universally available on every Android phone.

Requirement Documented condition
Android version Android 10 or later
Google Play account Signed in to the primary Google Account in Google Play
Supported countries Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the United States
Category availability Varies by country or region; individual categories may be missing
App content Varies according to installed apps, app participation, sign-in state, and available recommendation data

Users on Android 9 or earlier should not treat Collections as a supported feature. Users in an unsupported country may also lack the shortcut or see a different set of Collections categories even when the Play Store itself works normally.

Why is Collections missing from the Play Store long-press menu?

Collections may be missing because the Play Store is outdated, the feature has not been activated for the account or device, the country or Android version is unsupported, or the launcher is not exposing Play Store app shortcuts correctly.

Try the following checks in order:

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile avatar.
  3. Open Settings → About.
  4. Tap Update Play Store.
  5. Reopen the Play Store after any update completes.
  6. Tap and hold the Play Store icon again and check for Collections.

The February 2025 rollout involved both the Play Store application version and server-side enablement. The earlier version 44.8.15 was observed with the shortcut for some users, while version 45.0.21 was associated with a wider rollout. Those observations explain why updating can help, but neither version should be presented as a guaranteed current compatibility requirement.

Sideloading a Play Store APK is not a dependable fix because an APK version alone cannot force Google’s server-side activation. Before troubleshooting the launcher, verify Android 10 or later, the supported-country list, and the Google Account used as the primary Play Store account.

Why does Collections open to a sparse feed?

A sparse Collections feed usually means that few installed apps provide compatible recommendation or continuation content, rather than that the Play Store installation is broken.

Other possible explanations include apps that are not signed in, categories that are unavailable in the user’s region, recommendation settings that limit app content, or apps that have not published current recommendation data. Collections is not a second copy of the complete Play Store catalog and is not intended to replace the standard app drawer.

If an app is missing from the recommendation feed, check the App library and the normal Android app drawer. The App library can include installed apps without showing those apps as personalized content cards.

How can you control or remove Collections content?

Google provides controls for managing app content and Play personalization, but removing an icon, removing a widget, and disabling recommendations are different actions.

What you want to change What to do What the action does not necessarily do
Remove the home-screen Collections icon Use the launcher’s normal remove-from-home-screen action, such as dragging the icon to Remove It does not necessarily disable Collections or Play personalization
Remove the Collections widget Use the normal Android widget-removal action It does not remove the Collections experience from Play Store
Limit content from a particular app Use Collections’ available app-content controls to choose which apps display content It may not remove the app from the App library
Manage Play personalization In Play Store, open Profile → Settings → Personalization in Play It is broader than simply removing the shortcut icon

Exact labels and control locations can vary by Play Store version, Android release, and phone manufacturer. Google’s support page explains that users can choose which apps display content in Collections, while Google’s official Collections announcement describes controls for managing data associated with an app for Play Store personalization.

Is the Collections shortcut useful?

The Collections shortcut is most useful for people who regularly consume content across several supported apps and want a single place to resume videos, games, reading, listening, shopping, or other activity. The shortcut also provides a convenient route to the App library without taking permanent home-screen space until the user chooses to add its icon.

The shortcut is less useful for people who prefer a conventional app drawer, use individual app widgets, or dislike aggregated and potentially repetitive recommendations. Collections’ value depends heavily on the apps installed and whether those apps supply compatible content.

The practical verdict is simple: keep the shortcut if the feed helps you resume activity across multiple apps; remove the home-screen icon or widget if you do not use it. Removing the shortcut is a layout choice, not proof that the underlying Collections feature or Play personalization has been disabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Play Collections a separate app?

No. Google Play Collections is a full-screen experience inside Google Play, and the Collections item is an Android app shortcut exposed by the Play Store icon. Installing a separate Collections app is not required.

What Android version is required for Google Play Collections?

Google documents Google Play Collections for Android 10 and later. A phone running Android 9 or earlier should not be treated as supported, even if the Play Store application is updated.

Why does the Collections shortcut appear for one Android phone but not another?

The Collections shortcut can depend on Play Store updates, server-side activation, Android version, country, Google Account state, and launcher support for app shortcuts. Updating Play Store and reopening it may help, but installing a particular APK version cannot guarantee access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does removing the Collections shortcut disable the feature?

No. Removing the Collections icon from the home screen removes that access icon only. Collections content and Play personalization use separate controls, including app-content choices in Collections and the Play Store path Profile → Settings → Personalization in Play.

Does every app appear in Google Play Collections with recommendations?

No. The App library can include installed apps, but personalized recommendation and continuation cards depend on participating apps and available app-provided data. A missing recommendation feed does not necessarily mean that the app is uninstalled or unsupported by Android.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Google Play Store’s Collections shortcut is a real Play Store feature that opens a content hub rather than a new app. It began rolling out in February 2025, supports Android 10 and later in Google’s documented 13 countries, and may not appear immediately because availability is also server-controlled. Collections is worth keeping for cross-app recommendations and resume actions; otherwise, remove the shortcut or widget without assuming that you have disabled Play personalization.
