When Backup is on, Google Photos uploads supported photos and videos to the Google Account selected in the app. On Android, that can include screenshots, downloads, and folders from other apps if you enable those folders. Google says backed-up items are private and viewable only by you on signed-in devices unless you share them. Shared albums, public links, Partner Sharing, and copies saved by recipients create separate ways for other people to retain access. To know exactly what is in your library, check the backup account, Android folder switches, quality setting, storage status, and sharing controls rather than assuming every device file uploaded or every shared copy disappeared when you deleted your original.

What does Google Photos upload when Backup is on?

Google Photos uploads only after you enable Backup and choose a destination Google Account. The file must also meet Google’s supported format and size rules. One Google Account can be used for backup at a time; selecting a different account changes where new backed-up items go.

Google documents these practical limits and examples on its Back up photos & videos help page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item or rule What Google documents
Photo size Up to 200 MB or 200 megapixels
Video size Up to 10 GB
Minimum dimensions Larger than 256 × 256 pixels
Common supported photo formats JPG, HEIC/HEIF, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, and most RAW files
Other formats Google lists supported video formats on the help page; unsupported formats may not back up

These limits do not mean that every qualifying file on every device is selected automatically. Backup status is per account and per item. If a particular picture matters, open its details in Google Photos and verify that it shows as backed up instead of relying on the presence of a thumbnail alone.

Does Google Photos back up screenshots, downloads, and messaging-app images?

On Android phones and tablets, Google Photos can back up folders beyond the camera folder, but you must select them. The controls are described in Find items from other apps & devices.

Choose folders individually

  1. Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture.
  2. Open Photos settings, then Backup.
  3. Tap Back up device folders.
  4. Turn on the folders you want, such as Screenshots, Downloads, or a messaging app’s media folder.

The app’s On this device area helps you find which folders contain local images and videos. A folder switch controls future backup for that folder; it does not prove that every older item has finished uploading, so check individual backup status when timing matters.

What “Back up all device folders” changes

Android also offers Back up all device folders. With that option active, newly created device folders are automatically included. This can unexpectedly bring in future screenshots, downloaded images, or app-generated media, so review the folder list after installing apps that create their own directories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not apply this Android folder model to an iPhone, iPad, or desktop without checking the platform-specific controls. Google’s general backup documentation covers those platforms, while the cited folder selector is specifically an Android feature.

Which backup quality should you use, and how does it affect storage?

Google Photos offers Original quality, Storage saver, and, in some regions, Express. The setting applies to uploads and determines whether Google preserves captured resolution or reduces files to save space. Details and availability are listed in Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos.

Setting Resolution and processing Storage treatment
Original quality Keeps captured resolution Counts against Google Account storage
Storage saver Photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP; videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. Some items may not be compressed, and video resizing can remove information such as captions. Counts against storage under current policy
Express Where offered, photos above 3 MP may be resized to 3 MP and videos above 480p to 480p Availability and treatment depend on region and account

If you need a full-resolution file for printing, editing, or evidence, inspect the item’s backup details and use Original quality before uploading it. A quality change cannot restore detail that was already discarded during an earlier compressed upload.

How much Google Photos storage is available?

Google says each account includes up to 15 GB shared by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Current Original quality and Storage saver uploads use that shared quota. The current storage guidance is in About your Google Photos activity & storage.

When the shared quota is full, new photos and videos cannot be saved. Google also says content may be deleted after two or more years over the storage limit. You can review the account’s storage breakdown, remove data, or purchase additional capacity; any extra capacity is still shared across those Google services rather than reserved only for Photos.

Are my Google Photos private by default?

Google’s product documentation states that backed-up photos and videos are private and viewable only by you on your signed-in devices unless shared. That describes the app’s default visibility to other users. It does not establish what Google may process or access internally; the cited help pages do not answer that separate provider-access question.

Privacy therefore depends on both your account security and the sharing paths you have enabled. A person who can use an already signed-in device, recover your account, or receive a shared item is in a different position from an unrelated person browsing the internet.

How do shared albums change who can see a photo?

Shared albums have their own controls, documented in How shared album controls give your photos more privacy.

Named Google Account access

An album owner can add or remove named Google Account users. Removing a named collaborator stops that account’s album access, but it is not sufficient if link sharing remains enabled.

Link sharing

A shared link is designed not to be guessable, yet anyone who receives the original link can pass it on. If link sharing is on, removing a person from the named list does not block someone who still has the link. To make the album private again, remove unwanted collaborators and turn link sharing off.

Album access is not the same as ownership of a file someone has already downloaded or copied. Treat a link as a transferable credential: distribute it only where continued forwarding is acceptable.

What is Partner Sharing, and can a recipient keep a copy?

Partner Sharing can automatically send selected backed-up photos to one partner account. You can set a start date and choose all photos or selected face groups. The setup and its limits are described in Set up partner sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Selected-person sharing is unavailable in some regions. Because the feature relies on face-group matching, review what is being shared rather than assuming the filter is perfect.

The most important privacy boundary is the recipient’s saved copy. If the partner saves a photo to their own library, your later edit, deletion, or move of your copy into Locked Folder does not alter that saved version. Stopping Partner Sharing prevents future delivery but cannot retract an independent copy that the other account already saved.

What happens when you move a photo to Locked Folder?

Locked Folder removes items from the normal Photos grid, search, albums, memories, and ordinary sharing surfaces. It is a visibility feature, not a guarantee that no other version exists.

Backup choices

Backup for Locked Folder is optional. An unbacked-up item remains only on that device and can be lost if the device is damaged or lost, Photos data is cleared, or the app is uninstalled. A backed-up Locked Folder item still counts toward your Google storage quota.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copies outside the folder

Moving an item moves only the original. Copies, exports, edited versions, or a partner’s saved copy elsewhere can remain visible. Search those locations separately before treating the move as a complete cleanup.

Google says Locked Folder uses its standard encryption practices. The cited documentation does not describe it as end-to-end encrypted, so do not infer that label from the folder’s hidden interface.

How long will Google keep backed-up photos?

Google’s current activity guidance says photos and videos may be deleted after two or more years of Photos inactivity. It also warns about possible deletion after two or more years over the storage limit. The policy and download guidance appear in About your Google Photos activity & storage.

A cloud library should not be your only copy of irreplaceable material. Periodically download important originals to a computer and keep a second copy, such as on a portable external drive stored separately from the device. Google documents downloading to a computer; it does not endorse a particular drive or backup product.

  1. Confirm the destination account. In Google Photos, open your profile picture and verify the account shown under Backup.
  2. Check backup state. Look for the app’s current backup status and open details for files that must be present in the cloud.
  3. Review Android folders. Under Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders, disable folders you do not want and check whether all-folders backup is enabled.
  4. Confirm quality. Open the backup-quality setting and choose Original quality when retaining captured resolution matters.
  5. Inspect storage. Check the shared Gmail, Drive, and Photos quota before a large upload; a full quota blocks new saves.
  6. Audit sharing. Review shared albums, named collaborators, link-sharing status, and Partner Sharing. Turn off links and remove users when access should end.
  7. Handle sensitive items deliberately. For Locked Folder, decide whether backup is worth the recovery risk of leaving the only copy on one device, and look for duplicates outside the folder.
  8. Maintain an independent export. Download critical photos and videos to a computer and keep a separate physical copy so an account, quota, or device problem does not become permanent loss.

Which Google Photos setup fits your priority?

Your priority Practical configuration Main trade-off
Maximum resolution Original quality; verify each important item’s backup details Uses more of the shared account quota
Lower storage use Storage saver, or Express where available, plus selective folder backup on Android Resizing can reduce detail and some image information
Automatic Android coverage Enable Back up all device folders New app folders can upload without a separate prompt
Controlled collaboration Named album users with link sharing off Recipients may still download or retain copies
Convenient family delivery Partner Sharing with a defined start date and scope A saved recipient copy remains independent of your later changes
Reduced gallery exposure Locked Folder, with backup enabled only when you accept the account-storage and recovery implications Device-only items can disappear if the device or app data is lost
Long-term resilience Google Photos plus periodic computer download and a separate physical copy Requires a maintenance habit and additional storage media

What is the safest way to think about Google Photos privacy?

Separate three questions: Was the item uploaded? Check the selected account, folder scope, supported format, size, and item status. Who has product access? Review album links, named users, Partner Sharing, and signed-in devices. Who may still possess a copy? Deletions and Locked Folder moves affect your copy, not files another person has already saved. That three-part check is more reliable than treating the word “private” as a promise that every copy everywhere is under your control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Partner Sharing’s selected-person filter include photos without that person?

Yes. Google cautions that face-group matching can occasionally include photos without the selected person. Review the shared results periodically, especially before using a face-group rule for sensitive images.

Can someone open my Locked Folder if they know my phone passcode?

On Android, Locked Folder access is protected by the device screen lock. Anyone who can unlock the device with that credential may be able to open the folder, so use a screen-lock method you do not share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do older “High quality” uploads count against Google storage?

Google’s current policy treats older High quality (now called Storage saver) or Express uploads made before June 1, 2021 differently from current uploads. Check the account’s storage activity page for how your older items are classified.

Will Google warn me before deleting photos for inactivity?

For inactivity-related deletion, Google says it will email at least three months before possible deletion and let you download your data to a computer. Keep your account contact details current so that warning can reach you.
