The issue could help someone infer a phone number linked to a Google account; it did not publish a list of Google users’ numbers. The reporting documents researcher testing, but does not establish a number of affected accounts or confirmed compromises.
What the Google phone-number vulnerability did
Security researcher Arvin Shivram, who publishes as brutecat, reported that Google’s username-recovery behavior could be used to check whether a phone number matched an account. The method relied on a target’s display name and a masked phone-number hint, so the researcher’s account does not show that every Google user was equally discoverable. It was an inference technique, not a breach that exposed a database of all users’ phone numbers.
Brutecat described combining a display-name leak involving Looker Studio with repeated checks of Google’s recovery flow. The technical write-up says the checks used a no-JavaScript recovery form and methods to get around limits on repeated requests. These are the researcher’s reported technical details, not an independently replicated assessment of Google’s current recovery system. Read the researcher’s technical account.
How fast could numbers be inferred?
The speed estimates vary by source and should not be treated as universal benchmarks. Brutecat estimated roughly 40,000 checks per second using a server the researcher described as costing $0.30 per hour. Based on that method, the write-up estimated about 20 minutes for a US number, four minutes for a UK number, 15 seconds for the Netherlands, and five seconds for Singapore. These are self-reported estimates, not independently verified timings.

WIRED separately reported estimates from brutecat of about one hour for a US number and eight minutes for a UK number. It also described a mid-April 2025 test by 404 Media in which a linked number was returned about six hours after the outlet received a test Gmail address. That was one reported test, not evidence of the number of users affected or a general attack duration. WIRED’s account of the disclosure and test.
What is known about the fix and disclosure
According to brutecat’s timeline, the researcher reported the issue on April 14, 2025; Google triaged it the following day and accepted it on April 25. The researcher says Google began mitigations on May 22 and confirmed full deprecation of the vulnerable no-JavaScript username-recovery form on June 6. The public disclosure followed on June 9. These dates come from the researcher’s report.

Google told WIRED: “This issue has been fixed. We’ve always stressed the importance of working with the security research community through our vulnerability rewards program and we want to thank the researcher for flagging this issue. Researcher submissions like this are one of the many ways we’re able to quickly find and fix issues for the safety of our users.”
Google spokesperson Kimberly Samra told TechRadar the company had seen “no confirmed, direct links to exploits at this time.” That was a qualified statement about what Google had confirmed then; it does not prove that exploitation was impossible. Why a phone-number exposure can matter
A phone number can be used for account recovery or authentication. In a SIM swap, an attacker persuades a mobile provider to redirect a victim’s calls or texts to another SIM. If a service relies on SMS or calls for password resets or sign-in codes, that redirection may help an attacker take over an account, including email or financial accounts.
That is a possible risk pathway, not evidence that this Google vulnerability itself bypassed passwords or caused a confirmed SIM swap. The security researcher told WIRED, “I think this exploit is pretty bad since it’s basically a gold mine for SIM swappers.” Treat that as the researcher’s assessment of potential risk, not a confirmed account of harm caused by the issue.

What Google users should do
- Do not assume you need to change your Google number. The report describes a vulnerability Google said was fixed; it does not show that a particular account’s number was exposed.
- Review your recovery options. In your Google Account settings, check that the recovery phone and email are yours and current. Remove information you do not recognize.
- Protect accounts that use SMS recovery. Where a service supports stronger options, consider an authenticator app, passkey, or security key instead of relying only on text-message codes. Availability and recovery methods vary by service.
- Reduce public exposure of your number. WIRED reproduced FBI guidance: “Protect your personal and financial information. Don’t advertise your phone number, address, or financial assets, including ownership or investment of cryptocurrency, on social media sites.”
- Contact your mobile provider if you suspect a SIM swap. If your phone unexpectedly loses service or you receive an unexpected SIM-change notice, use another channel to contact the provider and secure accounts that depend on that number.
What the reports do not establish
The available reporting gives no comprehensive count of affected users, global attempt totals, or measured number of compromises. The researcher’s estimates and the described media test explain how the issue could work; they do not establish mass abuse. Google’s statement that the flaw was fixed is the company’s contemporaneous account, while the current recovery flow has not been independently reassessed in the cited reports.
