To publish a complete Google Performance Max asset group, prepare the required text assets, at least one horizontal image, at least one square image, and a square logo. Horizontal images should be 1.91:1 at 1200 × 628 pixels (600 × 314 minimum); square images should be 1:1 at 1200 × 1200 (300 × 300 minimum). Videos are optional because Google can generate one from the other assets, but uploading your own 10–60-second videos in 16:9, 1:1, and 9:16 gives you more control and supports more placements.

What does a publishable Performance Max asset group need?
A complete asset group combines text, images, branding, a destination URL, and a call to action. Google requires the core assets below; additional formats increase the number of placements your creative can cover.

Video is not listed as a required asset for a publishable group. When you do not provide one, Google may automatically create a video from other assets in the group.

What text assets and character limits does Performance Max require?
Google’s current specification sets the following limits. The recommended counts give the system more combinations; the allowed maximums are upload caps rather than a requirement to fill every slot.

Double-width characters, including Japanese, Korean, and Chinese characters, count as two characters toward these limits. Check the character count in the Google Ads interface rather than relying on a word processor, especially when mixing scripts, punctuation, or symbols.
What image sizes does Performance Max need?
Two image formats are required: horizontal at 1.91:1 and square at 1:1. Google accepts smaller files at the stated minimums, but the recommended dimensions provide more source pixels for adaptation.

Upload image files as JPEG or PNG. Keep the subject and any essential wording inside a safe central area so that automated resizing or cropping does not remove it. The optional 4:5 format gives Google a source designed for taller placements and can improve Ad Strength; it is not a substitute for the required horizontal and square formats.
How should I prepare horizontal images?
Export a 1.91:1 canvas at 1200 × 628 pixels when possible. A 600 × 314 file meets the minimum, but starting at the recommended size avoids giving the system a low-resolution source when it adapts the image for different inventory.

How should I prepare square images?
Use a 1200 × 1200 canvas with a true 1:1 ratio. The smallest accepted square is 300 × 300 pixels. Do not submit a landscape image placed inside a square canvas with large empty bars unless that treatment is intentional; it wastes the area available for the product or message.
When is a 4:5 image worth producing?
Create at least two 4:5 images when you want additional vertical coverage or a stronger Ad Strength assessment. Design these separately instead of forcing a horizontal composition into a tall crop, because the focal point and text hierarchy usually need to move.
What logo dimensions work for Performance Max?
A square 1:1 logo is required. A horizontal 4:1 logo is optional, but supplying it can provide stronger coverage in placements that have a wide branding area.

Google accepts JPEG or PNG logo files up to 5 MB. A transparent logo may render on a white background in most ads. Avoid a predominantly white mark on transparency, because it can disappear or lose contrast when the background is white. A clear, high-quality square logo should be your first export; add the 4:1 version when your brand has a lockup that remains legible in a wide strip.
What video length, aspect ratios, and formats does Google Ads accept?
Performance Max supports horizontal, square, and vertical video. Each video should run for 10–60 seconds, and Google recommends HD quality.

Google’s video-assets guidance specifies HD video for optimal quality and lists MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 video formats. MP3, WAV, and PCM audio files are not accepted on YouTube as standalone audio uploads for this purpose. You may add up to 15 videos across all orientations. Google recommends at least one video in each orientation so the system has a purpose-built source for wide, square, and vertical placements.

It may. When an asset group has no uploaded video, Google can automatically generate a video from the other assets. The generated result helps the campaign enter video inventory, but its scenes, timing, transitions, and text treatment are determined by the system.
Upload at least one custom video when you need control over the opening frame, product demonstration, voiceover, legal wording, or brand motion. A custom vertical video between 10 and 60 seconds is the direct way to provide a Shorts-eligible source; relying only on an automatically generated version gives you less control over how that vertical adaptation looks.
How do the asset quantities affect coverage?
Quantity limits are different for each asset class. You can add up to 20 horizontal images and 20 square images, up to five logos of each supported logo type, and up to 15 videos in total. The text recommendations—11 or more headlines, at least two long headlines, and at least four descriptions—are intended to give Google more combinations while staying within the maximum slots.
Optional formats complement, rather than replace, the required ones. A 4:5 image does not replace a 1.91:1 image, and a 4:1 logo does not replace the required square logo. Likewise, a video in one orientation does not supply a purpose-built file for the other two.

How do I build and validate a Performance Max asset group?
- Collect the destination details. Confirm the final URL, business name, and the call to action before writing copy. Keep the business name within 25 characters.
- Write the text set. Prepare at least 11 headlines of 30 characters or fewer, two long headlines of 90 characters or fewer, and four descriptions of 90 characters or fewer. If you use Japanese, Korean, or Chinese characters, allow for their double-width counting.
- Export the required images. Produce horizontal 1200 × 628 and square 1200 × 1200 versions. If your workflow cannot reach those dimensions, stay above the respective minimums of 600 × 314 and 300 × 300.
- Export the logo set. Create a 1:1 square logo, ideally 1200 × 1200 and never below 128 × 128. Add a 4:1 logo at 1200 × 300, with 512 × 128 as its minimum, if you have a legible wide lockup.
- Check every image and logo file. Save as JPEG or PNG and keep each file at or below 5 MB (5120 KB). Inspect transparent logos against white before uploading.
- Produce custom video. Render HD MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 files from 10 to 60 seconds. Make a 16:9, 1:1, and 9:16 cut when you need control across all orientations; include a vertical cut for Shorts eligibility.
- Upload and review validation messages. Add the required assets first, then optional 4:5 images, the 4:1 logo, and additional videos. Resolve ratio, dimension, character-count, and file-size warnings before publishing.
- Check the previews. Look for cropped subjects, unreadable logo detail, low contrast on white, and text that becomes awkward when the system adapts the asset to another placement.
What are the most common creative mistakes?
Using the wrong ratio
A 1200 × 1200 file is square, not horizontal, even if the artwork inside it is landscape. Export separate canvases at 1.91:1, 1:1, and, when needed, 4:5 rather than asking one file to serve every role.
Meeting the minimum but ignoring quality
Minimum dimensions are acceptance thresholds. Starting with the recommended dimensions gives Google more pixels to work with when it adapts the source.
Uploading an oversized file
Image and logo files over 5 MB (5120 KB) exceed the stated limit. Re-export at the required dimensions with sensible JPEG compression, or optimize a PNG without changing the canvas ratio.
Submitting only a white transparent logo
Because transparent logos may be shown on white, a white-on-transparent mark can become effectively invisible. Include a version with sufficient contrast and inspect it on a white background.

Relying entirely on auto-generated video
Automatic generation is an available fallback, not a guarantee that the result matches your intended story. Upload custom cuts when timing, branding, demonstrations, or vertical presentation matter.

Forgetting vertical video
Horizontal and square videos do not create a 9:16 source. If Shorts eligibility is important, provide at least one 9:16 video in the accepted 10–60-second range.
What should I verify immediately before publishing?
- At least one horizontal image at 1.91:1 and one square image at 1:1 are present.
- The square logo is present and readable on white.
- Every JPEG or PNG image and logo is no larger than 5 MB.
- Headlines, long headlines, descriptions, and the business name fit their character limits.
- The final URL resolves to the intended landing page and the call to action matches it.
- Optional 4:5 images and a 4:1 logo are included when their placements justify the production effort.
- Custom videos, if supplied, are HD MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, 10–60 seconds, and use the intended 16:9, 1:1, or 9:16 ratio.
- At least one 9:16 video is included when Shorts eligibility is a goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload only square images to a Performance Max asset group?
No. The specification calls for both horizontal 1.91:1 images and square 1:1 images. Square files alone do not provide the required horizontal format.
Do Performance Max images have to be exactly 1200 pixels wide?
No. The recommended sizes are 1200 × 628 for horizontal and 1200 × 1200 for square, while smaller minimums are accepted. Using the recommendations gives Google a higher-resolution source for adaptations.

Is a vertical video mandatory for every campaign?
No. Video uploads are optional, and Google may generate a video when none is supplied. A 9:16 custom video is useful when you want direct control of vertical creative or eligibility for Shorts inventory.
Are 5120 KB and 5 MB separate limits for image uploads?
They describe the same stated ceiling in Google’s specification: each JPEG or PNG image and logo must be no larger than 5 MB, expressed there as 5120 KB. Keep the exported file at or below that limit to avoid an upload rejection.
