Google Gemini for Home began its early rollout on October 28, 2025, and remains an invitation-based program in select countries and languages as of August 18, 2026. Eligible Google Home and Nest owners can request access, but accepting the upgrade permanently replaces Google Assistant for the household and paid Google Home Premium is required for several advanced features.
Gemini for Home is a collection of connected features rather than a single chatbot. The rollout includes a new voice assistant for compatible speakers and displays, Ask Home inside the Google Home app, Gemini Live, natural-language automation creation, and AI-powered camera capabilities.
Key takeaways
- Google Gemini for Home early access began in the United States on October 28, 2025, and Google still describes the rollout as limited and expanding as of August 18, 2026.
- Early access is currently listed for 20 countries, but language, device, firmware, account, and invitation requirements vary by location.
- Compatible devices include the 2026 Google Home Speaker, Google Nest speakers and displays dating back to the first-generation Google Home Mini, and selected third-party products, although Gemini Live is not available on every compatible device.
- The basic Gemini for Home voice assistant does not require a subscription, while Gemini Live, Help me create, Home Brief, and advanced camera features require Google Home Premium at the applicable tier.
- Accepting the household upgrade is irreversible: Google says a home cannot switch back to Google Assistant after Gemini for Home is enabled.
What is Google Gemini for Home?
Google Gemini for Home is Google’s AI-powered replacement voice assistant and smart-home feature suite for compatible Google Home and Nest households. The voice assistant handles natural-language questions and commands on supported speakers and displays, while related Gemini features appear in the Google Home app and eligible camera workflows.

- Gemini for Home voice assistant: Replaces Google Assistant on the household’s eligible speakers and displays after the upgrade is accepted. It supports more conversational requests, continued conversation, broader questions, and natural-language smart-home control.
- Ask Home: A Gemini-powered search and control feature in the Google Home app. Ask Home can answer questions about devices, home status, and activity. Some capabilities require Google Home Premium.
- Help me create: Lets a user describe an automation in ordinary language, then generates an editable automation that the user can review and save. Google Home Premium is required.
- Gemini for Home camera features: Includes AI descriptions, AI notifications, Home Brief, and related camera intelligence. These features require eligible cameras and the Advanced Google Home Premium plan.
- Gemini Live: A conversational mode started with “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and a supported device; compatibility with Gemini for Home does not automatically mean Gemini Live is available.
Google’s feature overview and eligibility documentation treats these as separate features with different device, plan, account, language, and regional requirements.

When did Google Gemini for Home start rolling out?
Google Gemini for Home is an ongoing early-access rollout, not a universal August 2026 launch. Google began early access for select existing U.S. users with compatible speakers and displays on October 28, 2025.
| Date | Rollout milestone |
|---|---|
| October 28, 2025 | Early access began for select existing U.S. users with compatible speakers and displays. |
| March 17, 2026 | Google expanded early access to Canada, including Canadian French among the documented updates. |
| March 31, 2026 | Google announced availability in Mexico and Spanish-language support. |
| June 2, 2026 | Google documented expansion to 16 additional countries and seven additional languages, with rollout beginning to reach eligible users who opted in. |
| August 18, 2026 | Google still described Gemini for Home as early access in select countries and languages, with availability continuing to expand. |
These dates come from Google’s original Gemini for Home announcement and its rollout and availability updates. The practical implication is important: joining an early-access program does not guarantee that Google will immediately enable the upgrade for a particular household.
Who can get Gemini for Home early access?
Eligibility depends on country, supported language, compatible Google Home or Nest hardware, current firmware, Google Home app version, account configuration, and Google’s progressive invitation process. Google notifies users when Gemini for Home becomes available for their home; opting in is not the same as receiving an immediate invitation.
Google’s current support documentation lists early access in these 20 countries:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Supported voice-assistant languages currently include Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish. Country-specific variants differ: U.S. English, Canadian English, Canadian French, U.K. English, and U.S. Spanish are separate availability entries rather than one universal English or Spanish setting. Check Google’s current country, language, and device list before assuming an account qualifies.
Is Google Home Public Preview the same as Gemini for Home early access?
No. Google Home Public Preview and early access to the Gemini for Home voice assistant are separate programs. Joining Public Preview for the Google Home app does not necessarily enroll a household in the Gemini voice-assistant upgrade or guarantee an invitation.

This distinction explains why a user may have access to experimental Google Home app features but not see Gemini for Home on a speaker or display.
Which Google Home and Nest devices support Gemini for Home?
Google lists the following first-party devices as supporting the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to account, region, language, firmware, and feature-specific restrictions:

| Device group | Compatible devices | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker or display support for the complete voice assistant | Google Home Speaker (2026); Google Nest Hub (2nd generation); Google Nest Audio; Google Nest Mini (2nd generation); Google Nest Hub Max; Google Nest Hub (1st generation); Google Home Mini (1st generation) | Complete voice-assistant compatibility does not mean every Premium or Gemini Live feature is available. |
| Most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live | Google Nest Wifi point; Google Home Max; original Google Home speaker; selected third-party speakers | These products may support the main assistant but are excluded from Gemini Live according to Google’s current list. |
| Camera intelligence | Eligible Nest cameras configured in Google Home, including eligible transferred legacy cameras | Camera features require Google Home Premium Advanced, an adult Home administrator, supported language and country, and acknowledged disclosures. |
Minimum first-party firmware requirements are Cast firmware 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher for displays. Google’s compatibility and firmware guidance is the authority for the current device list. A device released years ago may receive the base assistant while lacking Gemini Live or camera-related capabilities.
Google also lists integrations with services including Google Calendar, Google Tasks, Google Keep, Google Meet, Google Photos, Google Play Books, YouTube, YouTube Kids, YouTube Music, and YouTube TV, plus connected smart-home devices from thousands of brands. Availability depends on region, account, device, integration, and service status; a Google Home connection does not guarantee identical control for every third-party product. See Google’s supported services documentation.
How do you request Google Gemini for Home early access?
Use the Google Home app to request Gemini for Home early access when the option is available for your account.
- Update the Google Home app from the relevant app store.
- Open Google Home.
- Tap your profile picture or account initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Early Access.
- Join the Gemini for Home early-access program if the option appears.
Google also tells prospective participants to check their Google Groups setting. Sign in to Google Groups, open Settings, confirm that “Add me to their groups” is enabled, and save the setting. Menu labels can vary slightly by app version, operating system, account type, and regional rollout.
If the Early Access option is missing, update the app and device firmware, confirm that the country and language are supported, check the Google Groups setting, and try again later. An account managed by an organization or subject to account restrictions may not be able to join. Public Preview enrollment alone will not solve the problem.
How do you complete the Gemini for Home upgrade?
When Google enables the upgrade for a household, the Google Home app displays a notification such as “Introducing Gemini for Home.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Tap the notification.
- Choose Get started.
- Read the Gemini for Home disclosures.
- Configure the assistant and response-filtering options.
- Complete setup.
If the notification was dismissed, Google says the setup option may appear as a banner in Home settings. Android users may also need to update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
Do not accept the upgrade casually. Google says the household cannot switch back to Google Assistant after Gemini for Home is accepted. The change applies to everyone in the home, eligible devices already connected to the home, and compatible devices added later. Unsupported devices may retain limitations rather than receiving every Gemini feature.
Before accepting, check these items
- Confirm that every household member understands the permanent switch.
- Review important routines and automations rather than assuming every Assistant behavior will be identical.
- Check which devices will receive the assistant and which devices will lack Gemini Live.
- Decide whether camera processing and AI-generated home summaries are acceptable.
- Confirm whether the free assistant meets your needs before paying for Premium.
What can the free Gemini for Home assistant do?
The basic Gemini for Home voice assistant is available without a subscription, subject to device, account, language, and regional availability. Free functions include:
- Smart-home controls using more natural language.
- Media search and playback.
- Alarms and timers.
- Calendar access.
- Notes and lists.
- Reminders.
- General information questions.
- Continued conversation.
- More natural-sounding voices.
- Ask Home quick search, simple device queries, and real-time device controls in the Google Home app.
The main advantage is conversational flexibility. A user can describe an outcome instead of remembering a rigid command structure or exact device name. Representative commands include “Turn off all the lights except the kitchen” and “What devices are still on?” These examples illustrate the kind of natural-language interaction Google documents; they are not a guarantee that every connected device or integration will interpret every request correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
- Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
- Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
- Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
Smart-home control still depends on a working network, compatible integrations, functioning devices, regional service availability, and correct room or device configuration. Gemini can misunderstand a request or return an incorrect answer, so voice control should not be treated as deterministic or offline control.
Which Gemini for Home features require Google Home Premium?
The basic assistant is free, but Google Home Premium divides several advanced Gemini features between Standard and Advanced plans. Google’s current support pages summarize the tiers as follows:
| Capability | No subscription | Premium Standard | Premium Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Gemini for Home voice assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Continued conversation | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| General answers | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Smart-home controls | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Ask Home quick search | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Simple device queries | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Real-time device controls | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gemini Live | No | Yes, on supported devices | Yes |
| Help me create | No | Yes | Yes |
| Saved information through Ask Home | No | Yes | Yes |
| Home Brief | No | No | Yes |
| AI camera descriptions and notifications | No | No | Yes |
| Ask Home video-history search | No | No | Yes |
Google warns that features vary by device, region, plan, language, and rollout stage. Read the current Google Home Premium feature comparison, Ask Home documentation, and camera feature requirements before subscribing.
Google Home Premium is the successor to Nest Aware and also includes security, history, and Gemini-powered home features. The official support material reviewed for this article does not provide a reliable current U.S. price. Google’s live Google Home Premium subscription page should be checked for the price, taxes, plan availability, and regional terms at the time of purchase. A secondary report has cited approximately $10 per month in the United States, but that figure should not be treated as current without checking Google’s live pricing.
Recommended Free Tools
After cancellation, users retain the basic Gemini for Home features but lose subscription-dependent functions. Premium Standard is the more relevant tier for Gemini Live, saved Ask Home information, and Help me create. Premium Advanced is aimed at households that specifically want Home Brief, AI camera descriptions and notifications, or Ask Home searches of video history.
What does Gemini Live do, and which devices support it?
Gemini Live is a conversational mode activated with “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and a supported device, and Google excludes several otherwise compatible older products, including the original Google Home, Google Home Max, Nest Wifi point, and third-party speakers listed in the limited-feature group.
Older hardware can therefore be a good fit for the free Gemini for Home voice assistant but a poor fit for someone buying Premium mainly for Gemini Live. Check the exact device against Google’s current compatibility table before subscribing or replacing hardware.
How does Help me create work safely?
Help me create turns a natural-language description into an editable Google Home automation. For example, a user might describe an automation that turns on a porch light at sunset. The generated automation must be reviewed before saving.

What are Gemini for Home’s camera features?
Gemini camera capabilities include AI descriptions, AI notifications, Home Brief, and Ask Home searches of video history. These functions require Google Home Premium Advanced and eligible cameras; they are not included with the free assistant or Premium Standard.
Camera features may be unavailable unless the camera is configured in the Google Home app, is a supported Nest model or eligible transferred legacy camera, and the account belongs to an adult Home administrator. The user must also acknowledge the relevant Gemini for Home disclosures and use a supported country and language.
Google says camera AI features are restricted to adult Home administrators. Google also says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with users’ personal data. That statement is Google’s policy claim, not a promise that no cloud processing occurs: Gemini features still involve Google account data, device activity, cloud services, and, for camera features, potentially camera-derived information. Review Google’s camera AI requirements and disclosures before enabling the feature.
Why might the Early Access option or a Gemini feature be missing?
A missing menu or feature usually means that a separate eligibility condition has not been met, rather than that the hardware is universally unsupported.
If the Early Access menu is missing
- Update the Google Home app.
- Confirm that the country and selected language are supported.
- Update speaker or display firmware and verify the minimum Cast 3.76 or Fuchsia 28 requirement where applicable.
- Confirm that Google Groups allows “Add me to their groups.”
- Make sure you joined Gemini for Home early access rather than only Google Home Public Preview.
- Check whether the account is organization-managed or otherwise restricted.
- Check Home settings again later; Google’s progressive rollout may not have enabled the household yet.
If a compatible device lacks a particular feature
Check the feature separately. Gemini Live has narrower hardware requirements than the basic assistant, while camera features require Advanced, eligible camera hardware, adult administrator status, acknowledged disclosures, and supported regional settings.
If camera features are unavailable
Verify the camera configuration, model or legacy-camera transfer, adult administrator status, Premium Advanced subscription, disclosure acknowledgment, country, and language. A camera can be visible in Google Home without qualifying for every Gemini camera feature.
If an automation is wrong
Open the generated automation and inspect its starters, conditions, actions, devices, timing, and occupancy assumptions. Delete or edit unsafe logic, then test it with a low-risk device before enabling a security- or safety-sensitive action.
Should you join Gemini for Home early access now?
Gemini for Home is most compelling for households that already use Google Home, want conversational commands, frequently ask compound questions, or manage many devices with hard-to-remember names. Premium subscribers gain a stronger reason to try it if they want Gemini Live, saved Ask Home information, natural-language automation creation, Home Brief, or AI camera search and summaries.
| Household situation | Practical recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a compatible Google or Nest speaker and want more natural commands. | Consider requesting free early access. | The core assistant does not require Premium, but accepting the switch is permanent. |
| You want Gemini Live or Help me create. | Check the device list, then consider Premium Standard. | Both features require Premium and Gemini Live is unavailable on some compatible devices. |
| You own eligible Nest cameras and want AI summaries or video-history search. | Consider Premium Advanced only after checking camera eligibility. | Home Brief, AI camera features, and Ask Home video-history search require Advanced. |
| You depend on a specific Google Assistant routine or behavior. | Wait and research the consequences before accepting. | Google says the household cannot revert to Google Assistant. |
| You are privacy-sensitive or need offline, deterministic, safety-critical control. | Wait or avoid the upgrade for those tasks. | Gemini relies on cloud services and can misunderstand requests or generate incorrect answers. |
| You own older hardware and specifically want Gemini Live. | Verify exact device support before paying. | Some older Google products support most Gemini features but not Gemini Live. |
| You live outside the listed countries or use an unsupported language. | Wait for an official expansion. | Early access remains country- and language-limited. |
Buying a new Google Home Speaker (2026) may make sense for a new Google Home household or someone seeking current Gemini voice-assistant hardware, but purchasing the speaker does not guarantee every Gemini feature. Plan, language, region, device, and rollout restrictions still apply, and the current price should be verified on the Google Store before publication or purchase.

How does Gemini for Home compare with other smart-home ecosystems?
Gemini for Home is the most direct choice for a household already invested in Google Home speakers, Nest devices, Google services, and compatible Google Home integrations. Switching ecosystems can create duplicated hardware or migration work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Gemini for Home free?
The basic Gemini for Home voice assistant is available without a subscription, including smart-home control, general questions, media functions, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and continued conversation. Gemini Live, Help me create, saved Ask Home information, Home Brief, and advanced camera features require Google Home Premium at the applicable tier.
Can I switch back to Google Assistant after accepting Gemini for Home?
No. Google’s current documentation says a household cannot switch back to Google Assistant after accepting the Gemini for Home upgrade. The change affects everyone in the home and compatible devices added later.
Does Gemini for Home work on the original Google Home Mini?
Yes, Google lists the first-generation Google Home Mini as supporting the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to rollout, account, language, country, and firmware requirements. Compatibility with the voice assistant does not guarantee Gemini Live or every Premium feature.
Do I need Google Home Premium to use Gemini for Home?
No. The core Gemini for Home voice assistant and several everyday Ask Home functions do not require a subscription. Premium Standard is required for features such as Gemini Live and Help me create, while Premium Advanced is required for Home Brief and advanced camera intelligence.
Is Gemini Live available on every compatible Google Home speaker?
No. Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and a supported device. Google lists the Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, original Google Home speaker, and third-party speakers as supporting most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live.
Why do I not see Gemini for Home Early Access in Google Home?
The account, country, language, device firmware, app version, Google Groups settings, or account type may not qualify, or Google may not have enabled the invitation for the household yet. Update the app and devices, verify eligibility and Google Groups enrollment, and check Home settings again later.
The Bottom Line
Gemini for Home is worth trying now if you already own compatible Google Home hardware and value more natural conversations, but treat early access as a permanent household migration rather than a reversible experiment. The free assistant covers everyday control; choose Premium only for a specific feature such as Gemini Live, Help me create, Home Brief, or AI camera intelligence.
