Choose Google Cloud Data Agent Kit when your primary job is working with data—discovering assets, asking questions, writing SQL or Python, building pipelines, or doing data and ML work from an IDE or coding agent. Choose the Vertex AI agent-building path when the deliverable is an AI agent that uses tools, automates tasks, and must be deployed, governed, evaluated, and monitored in production. They can address different layers of the same project, but they are not interchangeable products. Google’s names and product boundaries have changed, so confirm the exact surface and documentation version before you design an architecture.
This guide compares their purpose, workflows, supported services, development styles, deployment concerns, and limitations so you can make a defensible choice for a real project.
What is the difference between Data Agent Kit and Vertex AI Agent Builder?
Data Agent Kit is a data-workflow surface for Google Cloud. Vertex AI Agent Builder—and the newer Agent Platform documentation that describes its evolution—is an application platform for building and operating AI agents. The shortest useful distinction is data work first versus agent lifecycle first.

| Decision axis | Google Cloud Data Agent Kit | Vertex AI agent-building path |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Explore, query, analyze, transform, and operationalize Google Cloud data and ML workloads. | Build an AI agent that reasons with tools, automates workflows, and runs as a managed application. |
| Main users | Data scientists, data engineers, and data application developers. | Teams designing, deploying, securing, evaluating, and operating AI agents. |
| Development surface | IDE extension and a plugin for supported coding agents. | Low-code Agent Studio, managed agent APIs, or custom-code development with the Agent Development Kit (ADK). |
| Typical interaction | Natural-language questions, SQL and Python analysis, data discovery, pipeline development, and ML tasks. | Agent instructions, tools, retrieval, code execution, sessions, memory, and application workflows. |
| Operational emphasis | Data assets, notebooks or IDE work, pipelines, and service-specific access. | Managed runtime, deployment, governance, evaluation, observability, and production operations. |
| Key qualification | Supported services and authentication paths must match your environment; automated orchestration-pipeline deployment is limited to GitHub Actions. | Choose a development path based on control, runtime, security, governance, evaluation, and monitoring requirements. |
These are capability boundaries inferred from Google’s descriptions, not a promise that every component connects automatically. If you are building an agent grounded in enterprise data, you may need a data-workflow layer and an agent-application layer.

What can you do with Google Cloud Data Agent Kit?
Data Agent Kit brings Google Cloud data and workloads into an IDE or compatible coding-agent environment. Its purpose is to reduce the friction between finding data, understanding it, writing analysis, and moving a working data or ML workflow toward deployment.
Explore and discover data assets
The IDE extension provides a unified view of data assets and workloads. A practitioner can inspect available resources, identify the service holding the data, and move from discovery to analysis without changing to a separate console for every step. The exact visibility still depends on the services enabled in the project and the permissions granted to the user or agent.
Ask natural-language questions, then work in SQL or Python
Documented workflows include asking questions in natural language and performing analysis with SQL and Python. This is useful when a data professional wants an interactive path from a business question to a reproducible query or script. Treat generated analysis as a starting point: access controls, joins, filters, business definitions, and statistical assumptions still need review by the project team.

The kit supports pipeline development and deployment workflows. Google’s overview specifically qualifies automated deployment of orchestration pipelines: that automation works only with GitHub Actions. If your organization uses another CI/CD system, plan for a different deployment mechanism or a manual handoff rather than assuming the same automation is available.
Perform AI and ML work
AI and ML tasks are listed among the supported workflows. In this context, the kit is helping you work with the data and workloads needed for modeling, rather than replacing a complete production agent runtime. You should separate model development requirements from the requirements of an end-user agent that calls a model and performs actions.
Use agentic skills inside a data workflow
Data Agent Kit includes agentic skills, so it is not limited to a static file browser or query editor. Its center of gravity remains data access and data operations. If the end product must maintain sessions, expose tools to users, enforce agent-specific governance, collect evaluation results, and run continuously as an application, compare the agent platform capabilities separately.
Which Google Cloud services are listed as supported?
The overview names the following services. “Supported” means they are included in Google’s documented Data Agent Kit scope; it does not guarantee identical features or authentication behavior for every service.

What is Vertex AI Agent Builder, and how does the current Agent Platform fit?
Vertex AI Agent Builder documentation describes a path for building AI agents and taking them through deployment and operation. Current Google documentation for the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform presents an evolution of the Vertex AI approach, with managed runtime services and lifecycle capabilities around the agent itself.
The documented building blocks
Google describes building agents with ADK or another open-source framework, deploying and operating them with Agent Engine, and adding tools such as search, code execution, retrieval, cloud integrations, and Model Context Protocol (MCP). The current platform overview also describes managed agent APIs, runtime, sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability.
That combination matters when your requirement extends beyond “generate an answer.” A production agent may need to remember a conversation, call approved systems, restrict actions, record traces, measure task success, and give operators a way to diagnose failures. Those concerns are first-class parts of the agent-platform discussion.
Why the product name needs a date and scope
Google’s documentation says, “The original Vertex AI Agent Builder product has been renamed AI Applications.” The same notice says the functionality and endpoints remained the same at the time of that page. Separately, newer documentation describes Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as an evolution of Vertex AI, while a Vertex AI Agent Builder documentation collection remains available.
Do not treat “Vertex AI Agent Builder,” “AI Applications,” and “Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform” as automatically interchangeable labels. In a design document, write the exact product surface, the API or console path, and the date you verified it. The Vertex AI Agent Builder overview used for this comparison is marked last updated 2025-12-02 UTC.
Should you use Data Agent Kit or an agent-building platform?
Start with the thing you must deliver, not the word “agent.” If the deliverable is a reliable data workflow, begin with Data Agent Kit. If it is an AI application that plans, calls tools, and runs under production controls, begin with an agent-building path.

Choose Data Agent Kit when the work is data-centric
- Your first task is discovering which Google Cloud data exists and how it is structured.
- The main outputs are SQL queries, Python analysis, transformations, models, or scheduled pipelines.
- Practitioners want to work from VS Code or a compatible IDE, or from a supported coding agent.
- The team already understands the target Google Cloud services and needs a productive interface over them.
- Agent-like assistance is useful, but a long-running, externally exposed agent runtime is not the primary requirement.
Choose the agent platform when the application is agent-centric
- The product must reason over instructions and select among tools such as search, retrieval, code execution, or cloud integrations.
- You need managed deployment and runtime behavior rather than an IDE-centered workflow.
- Sessions, memory, governance, evaluation, and observability are acceptance criteria.
- Multiple developers or services will consume the agent through managed APIs.
- Operators need to monitor behavior and investigate failed or unsafe actions after release.
Use both layers when the agent is grounded in Google Cloud data
A data-heavy agent can require both capabilities. Data Agent Kit can help a practitioner discover assets, validate queries, and build data or ML pipelines. The agent platform can host the user-facing agent, expose approved tools, manage sessions, and provide lifecycle controls.
Plan the boundary explicitly: identify which component owns data access, which identity performs each query, where prompts and tool definitions live, and how results are evaluated. Google’s descriptions support this layered interpretation, but they do not promise automatic interoperability between every Data Agent Kit workflow and every agent-platform component.
What are the development options inside the agent platform?
Google’s current agents documentation describes three broad paths. Select among them by the amount of code and control your team needs, not by assuming one path is universally superior.
| Path | Best fit | Trade-off | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-code Agent Studio | Teams that want to assemble and test an agent with minimal custom code. | Faster initial construction, with less freedom for unusual control flow or bespoke infrastructure. | Can the available configuration express your tools, security rules, and hand-offs? |
| Managed-code APIs | Applications that need a managed interface while keeping application logic in conventional code. | More control than a purely visual path, while still depending on managed platform behavior. | Which APIs cover sessions, runtime calls, authentication, and deployment for your chosen surface? |
| Custom-code ADK | Teams that need explicit agent logic, tool definitions, orchestration, and framework-level control. | More engineering, testing, and operational responsibility. | Who owns tool safety, retries, state, evaluation, upgrades, and production support? |
For each option, verify the current documentation for supported models, regions, authentication, quotas, networking, and deployment targets. The cited overviews establish the development categories and lifecycle features, but they do not provide one universal configuration or price for every project.
How do deployment, governance, evaluation, and observability change the decision?
These requirements are usually the dividing line between an IDE data assistant and a production agent platform.

Data Agent Kit is documented around IDE and coding-agent workflows, plus data pipeline development and deployment. Its orchestration automation has the GitHub Actions qualification noted earlier. An agent platform adds a managed runtime and deployment model intended to keep an agent available as an application, independent of a developer’s local IDE session.
Identity and authorization
For Data Agent Kit, check the authentication path for every database and service you plan to use. Google’s overview calls out authentication limitations for AlloyDB and Cloud SQL. That means a design should test the actual login method, network route, service account or user identity, and required permissions before promising a seamless workflow.

For an agent platform, define identities at two levels: the caller invoking the agent and the agent’s own permissions when it uses a tool. Avoid giving an agent broad database or cloud-admin access simply because a prototype works with elevated credentials.
Governance and safety
A production agent needs rules for which tools it may call, what data it may return, which actions require confirmation, and how secrets are handled. The current platform documentation includes governance as part of the lifecycle. Data Agent Kit can help create and inspect the underlying data workflow, but governance for an end-user agent still has to be designed and operated at the application layer.
Evaluation
Agent evaluation should test more than language quality. Define representative tasks, expected tool calls, acceptable data sources, refusal behavior, latency limits, and failure recovery. The platform documentation includes evaluation capabilities; use them to establish a repeatable gate before release and after prompt, model, or tool changes.
Observability
When an agent gives a wrong answer, the operator needs to know whether the cause was retrieval, a tool failure, an incorrect query, an authorization denial, or the model’s reasoning. The platform documentation includes observability, which is relevant to tracing and operating agent behavior. A Data Agent Kit workflow may expose useful data and pipeline diagnostics, but it is not described as a complete agent-operations system.
What limitations should you verify before choosing Data Agent Kit?
Data Agent Kit can be the right starting point and still fail a project’s requirements if its boundaries are not checked early.
- Service coverage: Confirm that every required Google Cloud service and operation is supported, not just that the service name appears in the overview.
- Authentication: Test AlloyDB and Cloud SQL access paths in the target environment because the overview identifies database-authentication limitations.
- Pipeline automation: Automated orchestration-pipeline deployment is documented only with GitHub Actions. Plan an alternative for other CI/CD systems.
- IDE compatibility: Verify the supported IDE or coding-agent configuration, extension installation, project selection, and permissions before standardizing on it.
- Agent runtime needs: If users need sessions, memory, managed APIs, governance, evaluation, or continuous monitoring, assess the agent platform rather than assuming the IDE plugin supplies those functions.
How can you make the choice with a project checklist?
Use this sequence during architecture review. It prevents the team from selecting a tool based on branding or a successful demo alone.
- Write the primary outcome in one sentence. If it starts with “an analyst needs to explore or transform data,” score Data Agent Kit first. If it starts with “a user needs an agent that completes tasks,” score the agent platform first.
- List every required tool and data source. Include BigQuery, databases, storage, search, retrieval, code execution, internal APIs, and any MCP server. Mark which component is expected to call each one.
- Define the execution context. Decide whether work happens interactively in an IDE, as a scheduled pipeline, through an API, or in a continuously available runtime.
- Map identities and permissions. Record the human identity, service identity, agent identity, database credentials, network controls, and approval points for consequential actions.
- Choose the development style. For an agent, compare Agent Studio, managed-code APIs, and custom ADK code against the team’s control and maintenance requirements.
- Set operational acceptance tests. Include task success, groundedness, tool-selection accuracy, refusal behavior, latency, auditability, and recovery from service failures.
- Verify product naming and documentation date. Put the exact Google product name, endpoint, region, and verification date in the architecture record so a later rename does not create an accidental migration.
Which approach fits common project scenarios?
| Scenario | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A data scientist wants to inspect BigQuery tables and generate Python analysis in an IDE. | Data Agent Kit | The central task is data discovery and analysis. |
| A data engineer needs to develop and deploy an Airflow-orchestrated pipeline. | Data Agent Kit, subject to the GitHub Actions deployment limitation. | The central task is pipeline construction and deployment. |
| A support assistant must retrieve policy documents, call internal systems, maintain sessions, and be monitored in production. | Agent platform | The deliverable is a governed, observable agent application. |
| An analyst-facing agent must answer questions over governed cloud data and trigger approved workflows. | Potentially both | Use a data-workflow layer for discovery and validated access, then an agent platform for the user-facing runtime and lifecycle. |
| A prototype needs a visual agent with minimal code. | Agent Studio | The low-code path is designed for that development style; verify that required tools and controls are available. |
| A complex agent needs custom orchestration, tool logic, and testable code. | Custom-code ADK path | Custom code provides the greatest control, with corresponding engineering responsibility. |
What should you document before calling the project production-ready?
Record the chosen product surface and version, supported services, identities, regions, network assumptions, deployment path, rollback method, and ownership. For a data workflow, include query validation, pipeline retries, schema-change handling, and the exact CI/CD route. For an agent, include tool contracts, confirmation requirements, session and memory behavior, evaluation datasets, monitoring alerts, and an incident procedure.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Also document what the system will not do. A clear boundary—such as read-only database access, no autonomous writes, or human approval for financial actions—reduces risk more effectively than a vague promise that the model will behave safely.
What is the bottom line for this comparison?
Pick Data Agent Kit when Google Cloud data work is the center of the project and an IDE or coding-agent workflow will make practitioners faster. Pick the Vertex AI agent-building path when you are delivering an AI agent that needs tools, managed runtime, governance, evaluation, and observability. If the agent depends on complex cloud data, combine the layers deliberately, test authentication and service support, and name the exact Google product surface and documentation date in your design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Data Agent Kit itself an AI agent runtime?
It provides agentic skills and coding-agent access, but Google’s documented emphasis is helping practitioners work with cloud data, queries, pipelines, and ML workloads. A continuously available, user-facing agent with managed sessions, governance, evaluation, and observability should be assessed against the agent-platform services.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use Data Agent Kit with databases outside Google Cloud?
The cited overview lists specific Google Cloud services and does not establish broad support for arbitrary external databases. Treat any external connection as an integration that must be verified separately for drivers, identity, networking, and supported operations.
Do I have to use ADK to build an agent on Google’s platform?
No. Google’s current documentation describes low-code Agent Studio, managed agent APIs, and custom-code development with ADK or another open-source framework. The right choice depends on how much control and custom logic your application needs.
What is the practical effect of the Agent Builder rename?
The rename can change which console pages, documentation collections, and API references you find, even when functionality or endpoints remain available. Put the exact product label and verification date in your implementation notes, and recheck links before a long-lived project starts.
