Neither AI Overviews nor featured snippets is a guaranteed traffic winner. An AI Overview generates a synthesized response with links to supporting pages; a featured snippet highlights an excerpt from one website. Which format brings more visits depends on the query, the result page, and what searchers do next. Google’s guidance and the available third-party study do not establish a universal head-to-head winner, so publishers should measure outcomes for their own queries rather than infer traffic from a feature’s presence alone.
What is the difference between an AI Overview and a featured snippet?
Both formats can make a result more prominent by answering a searcher’s question directly on Google’s results page. The key difference is what Google displays: an AI Overview synthesizes an overview and includes links to supporting web resources, while a featured snippet surfaces a short excerpt from a website that Google considers helpful for answering the query.
That changes how a publisher may be seen. A page can be one of several supporting links in an AI Overview, whereas a featured snippet spotlights a selected passage from a source page. Neither format guarantees that a searcher will click through, and the available evidence does not show that one format consistently sends more traffic than the other.

Neither description, by itself, predicts the number or quality of visits.

| Comparison | AI Overview | Featured snippet |
|---|---|---|
| What appears in the result | A generated overview with links to supporting web resources. | A short excerpt from a website selected to help answer the query. |
| When it appears | Google says it appears when its systems determine it adds to classic Search; it does not appear for every query. | A website excerpt may be shown as a featured snippet when Google considers it helpful for the query. |
| How publisher links appear | Multiple supporting links can appear within the overview. | The result surfaces an excerpt from a website. |
| What Search Console position means | Google says all links in one AI Overview receive the same position, so that position is not a separate rank for each cited page. | The AI Overview position rule does not describe featured snippets. |
Google’s explanation of AI features says: “AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don’t trigger.” That qualification matters: a site’s search performance can change because the set of queries showing an overview changes, even if the site itself has not changed.
It also means a comparison should start with the result page, not with an assumption that every query has the same format. Google says AI Overviews appear when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so some searches will show one and others will not. A trend across a broad group of queries can hide that variation. A publisher may see a different mix of results over time even when it has not made a corresponding change to its pages.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
They can change the path from a search to a website, but the evidence does not support a single traffic forecast for every publisher. A searcher may read the overview without visiting a cited page, or click a supporting link. The result also depends on the query and whether an overview appears at all.

In August 2025, Google said overall organic click volume to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that average click quality had increased. Google Search Relations’ John Mueller also said: “We’ve seen that when people click from search results pages with AI Overviews, these clicks are higher quality, where users are more likely to spend more time on the site.” These are Google’s descriptions of its aggregate measurements and observations. They do not establish that AI Overviews caused stable clicks or higher engagement for every site.
A separate 2025 UX study by Kevin Indig and Eric van Buskirk, as reported by Search Engine Land, found that 19% of mobile searchers and 7.4% of desktop searchers in the study clicked an AI Overview citation. The report also described lower website click rates when an AI Overview appeared and cautioned that the study sample was small compared with Google’s scale. Treat those figures as findings from that study’s sample—not as a forecast for all searches, sites, or future result pages.
These findings answer different questions. The study reports observed behavior among its participants; Google describes its own aggregate click volume and the quality of referrals it measures. Neither provides a controlled, query-matched comparison that shows what the same sites would have received with an AI Overview versus a featured snippet. A change in clicks for an individual site should therefore be assessed against its own query mix and search results.

It is useful to separate three questions that can otherwise get blurred together. First, did a page receive exposure in Search? Second, did that exposure produce a click? Third, did the visitor do something valuable after arriving? Impressions, clicks, and downstream engagement or conversions describe different stages, so an increase or decrease in one does not automatically answer the others. Google’s aggregate statement about relatively stable overall organic click volume is not a forecast for an individual publisher, just as a study’s citation-click percentages are not a universal click-through rate.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?” therefore has no single answer supported for every query and site. An overview may supply useful supporting links, and some searchers click them; others may not visit a cited website. The practical consequence depends on the specific page, query, search-result context, and audience behavior. Treat a reported average as context, not as a substitute for checking your own results.
Are featured snippets better for traffic?
Not on the evidence available here. A featured snippet gives a selected website an excerpt in the results, while an AI Overview can cite multiple supporting pages. Those differences affect visibility and the way links are presented, but they do not by themselves reveal how many people will click, how useful those visits will be, or whether the page will earn a conversion.
Traffic comparisons are especially easy to misread if you treat every search result position as equivalent. Google says links within the same AI Overview share one Search Console position. That number does not function as a clean, independent rank for each cited URL. A comparison based only on average position can therefore obscure what actually changed: which queries displayed the feature, whether the page was cited, and whether searchers clicked.
There is no direct head-to-head causal statistic in the available evidence that compares AI Overviews and featured snippets for the same queries and sites. Avoid declaring one format better for traffic without site-specific data that accounts for the result feature and the outcomes that matter to your business.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A fair comparison needs to keep the question being answered consistent. Raw visibility is not the same as visits; visits are not the same as engaged visits; and neither necessarily equals a conversion. A featured snippet’s excerpt may attract a searcher who wants to read further, while an overview’s links may serve as entry points to several supporting resources. Those are possibilities arising from the formats, not guarantees about what any audience will do. The measured results for your own pages should decide whether a particular format is helping your goals.

When reviewing a traffic change, resist treating a single average position as an explanation. Google’s shared AI Overview position applies to all links in that overview, rather than giving every cited page its own separate position. A site-level average can also combine queries whose result pages differ. Read position alongside query-level impressions and clicks, then consider whether the feature appeared and whether the page was among the links. That gives more context than labeling a position number “good” or “bad” in isolation.
How do I track AI Overview clicks in Search Console?
Google says external clicks on AI Overview links count as clicks in Search Console. It also says all links in a single AI Overview receive the same position. Use Search Console as part of the analysis, but interpret position as a feature-aware reporting signal—not a separate rank for every cited page.
A useful review is organized around the pages and queries that matter, rather than around a single sitewide average. Start with a business outcome, identify the queries and landing pages associated with it, and look at impressions and clicks over comparable periods. Then assess what happened after visitors arrived. This helps keep a search result metric from standing in for an outcome it does not measure.
- Choose the pages and queries that matter. Start with the search queries and landing pages connected to a business goal, such as a lead, purchase, or useful content visit. Avoid relying on a sitewide average if the pages serve very different purposes. A page intended to generate leads and a page intended to inform readers may have different success measures, so combine them only when the comparison makes sense.
- Compare a meaningful time period. Review query-level impressions and clicks over time. Use comparable periods and note changes in the mix of queries or the presence of AI Overviews on the results you are evaluating. A before-and-after comparison is less useful if the query set, season, or feature mix is materially different; the point is to make the periods as comparable as your analysis allows.
- Separate visibility from visits. Examine impressions and clicks together. A change in impressions indicates a change in recorded exposure; a change in clicks indicates a change in visits from Search. Neither metric alone tells you whether those visits were valuable. If impressions rise while clicks do not, that is a different pattern from falling impressions accompanied by a similar click count, and each deserves its own investigation.
- Read position in context. When a page is cited in an AI Overview, the shared position Google assigns to the overview’s links is not an independent rank for that URL. Do not use that value alone to explain a traffic change. It may be useful as part of the reporting picture, but it cannot tell you which individual citation was “ranked” above another within the same overview.
- Check what happens after the click. Use your engagement or conversion analysis to see whether visitors from the affected queries spend time with the site or complete the action you care about. Google recommends combining Search Console with conversion and engagement analysis. A click is an arrival, not proof that the visitor found the page useful or took the next step.
- Compare like with like before acting. Consider whether the result feature was present and whether the query, page, or time period changed. Look for a pattern across relevant queries rather than drawing a conclusion from one isolated change. A feature-aware review makes it less likely that a shift in the kinds of queries being measured will be mistaken for a change in the performance of one result format.
When you review a set of results, keep the unit of comparison clear: a query, a page, or a group of related queries. A query-level pattern can point to a change in exposure or clicks for a specific search, while an aggregated page or site view summarizes a broader mix. Aggregation is useful for seeing overall direction, but it can conceal differences among the searches that contribute to the total. If a conclusion depends on a particular type of result page, check those queries rather than relying only on the aggregate.
This approach will not prove that a search feature caused every observed change. It makes the comparison more useful by separating exposure, clicks, and downstream results, while keeping the result-page context visible. Avoid using one isolated CTR study, a shared position value, or a sitewide total as a stand-in for a query-matched analysis.
Can I optimize for both?
There is no separate AI Overview optimization recipe documented by Google. Google Search Central says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” For a page to be eligible as a supporting link in an AI Overview, Google says it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Eligibility is not a guarantee that Google will index the page, show it, or select it as a supporting link.

That means there is no documented special setting or format that guarantees a page will appear in both experiences. Focus on foundational SEO practices and on making the page useful for its audience. The eligibility guidance for AI Overviews does not promise a featured snippet, and being shown in one format does not establish that the other will appear.
- Check eligibility, not supposed shortcuts. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as an AI Overview supporting link.
- Do not treat eligibility as placement. Meeting the stated condition does not guarantee indexing, a citation, or a particular result format.
- Measure the actual result. Track the queries and pages that matter, account for the feature shown, and evaluate clicks alongside engagement or conversions.
Google’s wording draws a line between being eligible and being selected. Eligibility means a page meets the stated condition for consideration as a supporting link; it does not promise that the page will be indexed, cited in an overview, or displayed in a featured snippet. Do not turn a general eligibility statement into a guaranteed result or a checklist that claims to force either feature.
For the same reason, optimizing for both is best understood as continuing sound foundational SEO rather than chasing a special AI-only trick. Google documents no extra technical requirement or special optimization for AI Overviews. That guidance does not say that a particular page will appear in both formats, or that appearing in one makes the other more likely. Evaluate visibility on the results and queries that actually matter to your site.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should publishers conclude?
AI Overviews and featured snippets offer different kinds of search visibility: one presents a generated overview supported by links, and the other highlights a website excerpt. Google’s guidance describes how AI Overview links are eligible and counted; Google’s reported aggregate observations and one small-sample UX study provide useful context, but neither settles how a particular site will perform against featured snippets.
For a publisher, the practical question is not simply which feature is “better.” It is whether relevant queries are earning exposure, whether that exposure produces clicks, and whether those visits lead to meaningful engagement or conversions. Analyze those outcomes for your own pages and queries before changing strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The Search Engine Land report on Kevin Indig and Eric van Buskirk’s 2025 UX study gives sample-specific citation-click figures and notes the sample’s limits. None supplies a controlled comparison of AI Overviews and featured snippets for the same queries and publishers.

The decision process is therefore practical rather than universal: identify the searches that matter, check what kind of result page they show, review clicks and impressions, and connect visits to engagement or conversion outcomes. A feature can change the way a page is presented without guaranteeing a particular traffic result. Let observed performance on your own query set—not an assumed winner—guide the next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
They may change whether a searcher clicks through, but there is no universal effect established for every site or query. Google said in August 2025 that overall organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year, while a 2025 UX study reported lower website click rates when an AI Overview appeared. The study’s citation-click figures—19% of mobile searchers and 7.4% of desktop searchers—describe its sample, which Search Engine Land said was small relative to Google’s scale.
Are featured snippets better for traffic than AI Overviews?
The evidence does not establish a universal winner or a direct, controlled comparison for the same queries and sites. A featured snippet surfaces a website excerpt; an AI Overview presents a generated overview with supporting links. Compare your own query-level clicks and downstream outcomes with the result feature in context.

Google says external clicks on AI Overview links count as clicks in Search Console. Review impressions and clicks for relevant queries and pages over comparable periods, and pair those metrics with engagement or conversion analysis. Google assigns all links in a single AI Overview the same position, so do not read that position as an independent rank for each cited URL.
Can I optimize for both AI Overviews and featured snippets?
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as an AI Overview supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee indexing, a citation, or placement in either format. Focus on foundational SEO practices and measure actual results.
Does a Search Console position show where my page ranks within an AI Overview?
Not as an independent rank for each cited URL. Google says all links in a single AI Overview receive the same position. Interpret that position in the context of the result feature, and use query-level impressions, clicks, and downstream outcomes to understand performance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI Overviews synthesize an answer and link to supporting resources; featured snippets surface a website excerpt. Neither is a guaranteed traffic winner. Google says AI Overview clicks count in Search Console and that links within one overview share a position, so assess query-level impressions and clicks alongside engagement or conversions. Use Google’s August 2025 statements and the 2025 UX study reported by Search Engine Land as context—not as a forecast for your site.
