Gladiator 2 is not a critical failure, but it is clearly not the equal of Ridley Scott’s 2000 original. The sequel is broadly considered entertaining and technically impressive, while reviews repeatedly criticize its recycled story, lighter emotional impact and dependence on the first film’s legacy.
As of August 7, 2026, Gladiator II has a 70% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 64/100 Metacritic score. Those figures put it comfortably above a disaster, but well below the reputation of Gladiator.

That gives the original a 10-point advantage on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7-point advantage in its audience score and a 3-point lead on Metacritic’s critic scale. The difference is much larger among Metacritic users, where the original leads by 3.4 points out of 10.

The broad conclusion is consistent across both services: Gladiator II was received positively enough to be considered worthwhile, but Gladiator remains the more highly regarded film.
What the 70% Rotten Tomatoes score actually means
A 70% Tomatometer score does not mean that critics gave the film an average grade of 7 out of 10. Rotten Tomatoes counts the percentage of professional reviews classified as positive. Each review is effectively counted as Fresh or Rotten.
So, in practical terms, a 70% score means roughly seven out of every ten included reviews were judged positive. A positive review could still have awarded a relatively modest score; it does not have to be exactly 70 out of 100.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGladiator II is therefore classified as Fresh, since Rotten Tomatoes uses 60% as the basic Fresh threshold. However, its 70% score is below the usual 75% level associated with Certified Fresh status, which also depends on review volume and other requirements involving Top Critics.
Critics’ score versus audience score
The 80% Popcornmeter is an audience measurement, not a second critics’ score. Rotten Tomatoes uses verified ratings for newer theatrical films when it can confirm that users purchased tickets. The 2000 original predates that system, so its 87% audience figure comes from a much broader pool of ratings.
That makes the two audience numbers useful, but not perfectly identical measurements. Even with that qualification, the comparison favors the original: viewers have rated Gladiator more enthusiastically than its sequel.
Denzel Washington is the sequel’s biggest strength
The most consistent positive point in reviews is Denzel Washington’s performance as Macrinus. The character is a former slave who has become a gladiator broker, businessman and political operator. Washington plays him with theatrical confidence, menace and a sense that he is always several moves ahead of everyone else.
Rank #2
- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
Rotten Tomatoes’ official critics consensus singles out Washington’s scene-stealing performance as one of the film’s main attractions. The Associated Press similarly described Macrinus as an entertaining, over-the-top power broker, while RogerEbert.com suggested that Washington is compelling enough to make viewers wish the story were more directly about him.
This is an important distinction in the reviews. Even critics who found the screenplay derivative often thought Washington was having fun and giving the film the personality it needed. Macrinus frequently attracts more attention than Lucius, the character who is supposed to carry the main story.
The action is larger, stranger and more excessive
Ridley Scott still knows how to build a spectacle. Gladiator II opens with a large siege and takes its arena combat far beyond standard sword fights. The film includes naval warfare inside the Colosseum, sharks, a rhinoceros and digitally created primates.
Those sequences explain much of the film’s audience appeal. There is no shortage of expensive production design, large crowds, violent combat or unusual visual ideas. The movie is designed to be watched as a broad, theatrical action event.

The criticism is not that the sequel lacks spectacle. It is that the spectacle sometimes overwhelms the drama and veers into camp. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus describes the film as increasing both the bloodsport and the silliness, while The Guardian called it violent and spectacular but notably less serious than its predecessor.
That produces a fairly consistent review pattern: the action is often effective on its own terms, but some scenes feel like escalation for its own sake rather than developments that deepen the characters.
The main criticism: the story repeats the original
The most common negative observation is that Gladiator II follows the original too closely. Lucius is a wronged man who is forced into slavery and gladiatorial combat, seeks revenge and becomes caught in Rome’s struggle for political power. That outline deliberately echoes Maximus’ journey in the first film.

For some viewers, the parallel gives the sequel a satisfying connection to the original. For many critics, however, it makes the film feel like a remake with new actors and larger set pieces. The Guardian argued that the similarities are so extensive that the sequel is practically a retelling, while Variety described it as serviceable but far below the first film.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The problem is not simply that both movies contain gladiators or political intrigue. It is that they use similar dramatic beats: a powerful man is betrayed, stripped of his former life, forced to fight for an audience and pulled into a conflict involving Rome’s ruling class. The sequel adds new characters and locations, but critics often felt that it did not provide a comparably fresh reason for telling the story.
Paul Mescal is solid, but Lucius is not a new Maximus
Reviews generally do not describe Paul Mescal’s performance as poor. He gives Lucius the physical intensity needed for the role and conveys a character shaped by anger, grief and isolation.
The difficulty is that the film places him in a role structurally similar to Russell Crowe’s Maximus. That comparison is unavoidable, particularly because the original made Maximus such a commanding central figure. Lucius is more restrained and less immediately magnetic, and critics often found his emotional development less convincing.
The result is an uneven balance between the leads. Mescal is the nominal protagonist, but Washington’s Macrinus is frequently the character reviewers remember. The Associated Press characterized the sequel as more of a swaggering entertainment than the prestige epic represented by the Best Picture-winning original, with Washington providing much of its energy.

Gladiator has a tightly concentrated emotional engine. Maximus loses his family, is separated from his former life and pursues revenge against Commodus. His relationship with Marcus Aurelius, Lucilla and the memory of his family all reinforce that single dramatic purpose.
Gladiator II has more moving parts. It combines Lucius’ personal revenge, shifting alliances, political maneuvering, Macrinus’ ambitions and the spectacle of the arena. Those elements create a busier movie, but not necessarily a more affecting one.

Reviews repeatedly say that the sequel’s larger scale does not produce an equivalent emotional payoff. Rotten Tomatoes’ early reaction roundup noted that even favorable responses often found the follow-up less focused and less powerful. The Atlantic argued that the film’s dependence on the original makes weaknesses in its dialogue and political ideas more visible.
This is why the critical verdict is more nuanced than “the movie is bad.” The sequel can be energetic and enjoyable while still failing to generate the same sense of loss, purpose and catharsis that made the first film resonate.

Why audiences still responded reasonably well
An 80% verified audience score indicates that many viewers got what they wanted from the sequel: a big, violent historical action movie with recognizable connections to the original. The arena set pieces, Washington’s performance and Scott’s production scale give it strong blockbuster appeal.
Rotten Tomatoes’ audience consensus emphasizes the film’s “razzle-dazzle” and suggests that viewers were more interested in the spectacle than in strict historical accuracy. That is consistent with the film’s premise and tone. It is not attempting to function as a documentary reconstruction of ancient Rome.
Still, 80% is not the same as universal approval, and the sequel remains below the original’s 87% audience score. Its 5.3/10 Metacritic user score also points to a much less enthusiastic long-term response. The fairest summary is that audiences generally found Gladiator II entertaining, but they did not embrace it with the same affection as Gladiator.
Gladiator II versus Gladiator
| Category | What the sequel does well | Where the original remains stronger |
|---|---|---|
| Action | More elaborate arena scenarios, including naval combat and animals | More disciplined action that supports the emotional story |
| Performances | Denzel Washington gives the film its most memorable performance | Russell Crowe makes Maximus a more commanding central hero |
| Story | Expands the political and personal conflicts around Rome | Uses a cleaner, more unified revenge narrative |
| Emotion | Provides a strong personal motivation for Lucius | Builds to a more powerful emotional and dramatic payoff |
| Entertainment | Delivers energetic, oversized blockbuster spectacle | Combines spectacle with greater dramatic weight |
Claims about the reviews that are outdated or inaccurate
- “The Rotten Tomatoes score is 76% or 71%.” Those numbers reflected earlier stages of the review rollout. The current listed score is 70% from 407 reviews.
- “70% means critics rated it 7/10.” It does not. The Tomatometer is the percentage of positive reviews, not an average grade.
- “The sequel has a better audience score than the original.” The current figures show the opposite: 80% for Gladiator II and 87% for Gladiator.
- “Critics considered it a disaster.” A 70% Tomatometer score is Fresh, and a 64 Metacritic score reflects a mixed-to-positive critical response rather than a critical collapse.
- “It matches the original critically.” It does not. The original leads by 10 points on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 points on Metacritic.
What the scores mean for prospective viewers
If you want a faithful continuation of the original’s emotional drama, the reviews suggest lowering your expectations. The sequel revisits many of the first film’s ideas without matching its focus or impact.
If you mainly want arena combat, huge production design and Denzel Washington delivering a flamboyant performance, the film is more likely to work. The review scores describe a movie that is worth watching as spectacle, but difficult to defend as an equal successor to the 2000 classic.

FAQ
Is Gladiator 2 good according to critics?

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Gladiator II is a Fresh but noticeably lesser sequel. Ridley Scott supplies the scale and spectacle, and Denzel Washington gives the film its standout performance. However, the story follows the original too closely, Paul Mescal’s Lucius does not command the screen like Russell Crowe’s Maximus, and the sequel lacks the first movie’s emotional force. The scores support a precise verdict: entertaining for many viewers, but clearly behind Gladiator critically and with audiences.
