GitHub Desktop 2.2 introduced an interactive tutorial that walked newcomers through a first GitHub contribution: make a change on a branch, commit it, push it to GitHub, and open a pull request. The feature was announced on October 2, 2019, so its screens and menus are historical; use GitHub’s current documentation for installing and using Desktop today.

What GitHub Desktop 2.2 added

GitHub’s October 2, 2019 announcement described the first version of an interactive Git and GitHub tutorial built into GitHub Desktop. The tutorial was designed for people new to these tools, including users unsure how Git, GitHub, and GitHub Desktop differ. The announcement page was updated on May 14, 2021, but the feature belongs to the 2.2 release era, not the current Desktop setup experience. Read the GitHub Blog announcement and the October 2, 2019 changelog entry.

How the 2.2 tutorial worked

From Desktop’s welcome page, a learner could choose “Create a Tutorial Repository.” The tutorial repository provided a safe, guided introduction to the basic sequence of collaborating on a project.

  1. Set up an editor. The first step prompted learners to install a code editor if they did not already have one, or connect an editor to Desktop.
  2. Create a branch and edit a file. The learner made a branch for the change, then modified a file in the tutorial repository. A branch lets work proceed separately from the project’s main line while the change is prepared.
  3. Commit the change. Desktop guided the learner to save the change as a commit, a recorded unit of work in Git.
  4. Push to GitHub. The learner sent the committed branch from the local computer to GitHub so it could be shared.
  5. Open a pull request. The final workflow step was to propose the branch’s changes for review through a pull request.

After completion, Desktop suggested possible next steps: find projects to contribute to, create a project, or add an existing project to Desktop. Those were suggestions, not required parts of the tutorial.

Git, GitHub, and GitHub Desktop are different things

  • Git is the version control system that records changes to files and supports branches and commits.
  • GitHub is an online hosting and collaboration service where repositories can be shared and changes reviewed.
  • GitHub Desktop is a graphical application for carrying out common Git operations and interacting with hosted repositories without relying on a command-line interface for every task.

The distinction matters: Git is not the same thing as GitHub, and Desktop is an interface for working with Git repositories rather than a replacement name for either. The tutorial’s sequence made the connection practical by moving from a local edit to a commit, a push, and a pull request.

Getting started with GitHub Desktop today

Desktop 2.2 is a historical release. GitHub’s current guide covers installing the application, authenticating to GitHub or GitHub Enterprise, configuring settings, and creating, adding, or cloning repositories before working with branches, commits, pushes, and collaboration. GitHub describes Desktop as a free, open-source application for working with code hosted on GitHub or other Git hosting services. The current guide also notes that a basic understanding of Git and GitHub may help. See GitHub’s current getting-started guide.

Installation steps and supported operating-system details can change, so check the current supported operating systems and official download page rather than relying on a 2019 walkthrough. The project repository says Linux is not officially supported and points to community releases; those builds are not equivalent to an official Windows or macOS release. What the tutorial does—and does not—establish

The release announcement and changelog document a beginner-oriented guided workflow. They do not report adoption figures, measured learning outcomes, or evidence that the tutorial reduced the learning curve by a specific amount. Its value is best understood as a concrete introduction to the basic contribution path, not a guarantee that a learner will be ready for every project’s workflow.
