File Explorer is the Windows 11 app for browsing drives, opening folders, managing files, and accessing network locations. When it stops responding, opens slowly, shows the wrong folders, or refuses to copy and delete items, the right fix depends on the symptom.

This guide covers the quickest ways to open and customize File Explorer, followed by practical steps for repairing common problems without immediately resetting Windows.

Open File Explorer in Windows 11

You can launch File Explorer in any of these ways:

  • Select the File Explorer icon on the taskbar.
  • Press Windows + E.
  • Open Start and select File Explorer from the pinned apps or search for it.
  • Right-click Start, select File Explorer, if the shortcut is available in that menu.

If the taskbar is working, the keyboard shortcut is usually the fastest option. If nothing happens, continue with the recovery steps below.

Fix File Explorer that will not open or keeps freezing

1. Restart Windows Explorer

Restarting the Windows Explorer process can restore File Explorer, the desktop, and the taskbar without restarting the entire computer.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. If Task Manager shows a compact view, select More details.
  3. Find Windows Explorer under Processes.
  4. Right-click it and select Restart.

The screen may briefly disappear or refresh. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select Run new task in Task Manager, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

2. Restart Windows

A normal restart clears temporary Explorer processes and completes updates or pending system changes. Select Start > Power > Restart. If the Start menu is unavailable, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, select the power button, and choose Restart.

3. Install Windows updates

Explorer failures can be caused by a Windows component or driver that has already been fixed in an update.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates.
  4. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not specifically request it.

4. Repair Windows system files

Use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC). These commands can repair damaged Windows components used by File Explorer.

  1. Search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Enter the following command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for the operation to complete successfully. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when the scan finishes.

Fix a slow or unreliable File Explorer

Check available storage

A nearly full system drive can make Windows and File Explorer sluggish. Open Settings > System > Storage to see what is using space. You can also search for Disk Cleanup, select the system drive, choose safe categories to remove, and select OK.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the Recycle Bin before cleaning it. Selecting its contents for removal permanently deletes those files.

Reduce clutter in Home and Quick access

Windows 11 commonly opens File Explorer to Home, which can show pinned locations and recent or recommended files. To pin a folder, right-click it and select Pin to Quick access. To remove a pinned location, right-click it and select Unpin from Quick access.

If a recent item is causing delays or is no longer useful, right-click it and select Remove from Quick access. You can also change what appears in File Explorer Home:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select the three-dot menu on the command bar and choose Options.
  3. On the General tab, adjust the privacy options for recently used files and frequently used folders.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

Open File Explorer directly to This PC

If you prefer drives and standard folders instead of Home, change the startup location:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select the three-dot menu > Options.
  3. In Open File Explorer to, select This PC.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

Show file extensions and hidden files

Showing extensions makes it easier to distinguish a document from a potentially dangerous executable file with a misleading name.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View > Show > File name extensions.

To display hidden files and folders, select View > Show > Hidden items. Avoid changing or deleting hidden Windows folders unless you know what they contain.

Restore useful navigation options

To display Libraries in the navigation pane, open File Explorer and select View > Show > Navigation pane > Show libraries. Libraries provide a combined view of files stored in different folders, such as Documents or Pictures.

If a network folder, USB drive, or cloud location will not open, first check whether it works in another app and whether the drive or network is connected. Copying, moving, renaming, and deleting files on a network share can fail because of permissions, a lost connection, or a path that no longer exists.

When files cannot be copied, moved, renamed, or deleted

Symptom What to check
Windows says a file is in use Close the app using the file, then try again. Restart Windows if the process cannot be identified.
Access is denied Check whether your account has permission and whether the item is on a protected system or network location.
The file or folder does not exist Refresh the folder, check the full path, and confirm that the item was not moved or deleted.
A network operation fails Reconnect to the network, confirm the remote PC or server is available, and check share permissions.
Recycle Bin will not empty Try deleting individual items and restart Windows Explorer. Check the contents carefully before using Disk Cleanup.

For items displayed in Quick access, open the actual location first before attempting cut-and-paste operations. A Quick access entry can point to a folder that has been moved or disconnected.

Run recovery tools when Explorer remains broken

Use Startup Repair

Startup Repair is intended for Windows startup problems, but it can be useful when a wider Windows failure prevents the desktop and Explorer from loading correctly.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. After the PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  4. Choose your account and enter its password if requested.

Save open work first. Advanced startup restarts the computer and may take several minutes.

Check virtual-memory settings

Incorrect paging-file settings can contribute to application and Explorer startup failures. This setting is normally managed automatically, so restore the default management option if it was changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search for Control Panel and open it.
  2. Select System and Security > System.
  3. Select Advanced system settings.
  4. On the Advanced tab, select Settings under Performance.
  5. Select the Advanced tab, then select Change under Virtual memory.
  6. Turn on Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  7. Select OK, select Apply, and restart the PC.

Do not manually assign a paging-file size unless you have a specific reason and understand the consequences.

Reset Windows only as a last resort

If File Explorer is still unusable after updates, process restarts, and system-file repair, Windows recovery options may be appropriate. Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.

Read each option carefully. Some reset choices remove apps and settings, and others can remove personal files. Back up important documents, photos, and other data before proceeding. Resetting Windows is a full recovery operation, not a reset of File Explorer alone.

Getting help from Microsoft

Windows 11 includes the Get Help app. Open Start, search for Get Help, and enter a description such as File Explorer freezes or Windows Explorer keeps restarting. Follow the troubleshooting steps it provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s current Get Help troubleshooters include tools for areas such as Windows Update, Bluetooth, printers, network and internet, audio, camera, video playback, and program compatibility. There is not necessarily a dedicated File Explorer troubleshooter, so Get Help may direct you to general Windows repair steps instead.

Be cautious with old web instructions that tell you to download an unknown “Explorer repair” utility. Use Microsoft’s support pages and built-in Windows tools whenever possible.

FAQ

Why does File Explorer open slowly in Windows 11?

Common causes include a nearly full system drive, a large number of recent locations, disconnected network folders, cloud-sync problems, damaged system files, or a stuck Explorer process. Restart Windows Explorer, check storage, remove stale Quick access entries, and run DISM followed by SFC.

How do I restart File Explorer without restarting my PC?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer in Task Manager, right-click it, and select Restart. If it is missing, select Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make File Explorer open to This PC?

Open File Explorer, select the three-dot menu, choose Options, set Open File Explorer to This PC, and select Apply and OK.

What is the difference between File Explorer and Windows Explorer?

File Explorer is the current name of the Windows file-management app. Windows Explorer is also the name of the background process that supplies the desktop, taskbar, and File Explorer interface.

Will resetting Windows fix File Explorer?

It may fix deeper Windows corruption, but resetting is a last resort. It can remove applications, settings, and—depending on the selected option—personal files. Back up important data first.

The Bottom Line

For most File Explorer problems, start with the least disruptive fixes: restart Windows Explorer, restart the PC, install Windows updates, and run DISM and sfc /scannow. If the problem affects only a network or cloud location, investigate that connection rather than resetting Windows. Use Startup Repair or Reset this PC only when the failure points to a broader Windows problem.
