Use Gemini with Google Maps data when you want to ask broad questions about places in a conversation; use Google Maps’ built-in AI when you need a map, route, live navigation context, or actions tied to a trip. Gemini can find places, provide details and directions, and link you to a place’s Maps page. The Maps app goes further with features such as Ask Maps, Gemini during navigation, Lens in Maps, and Immersive Navigation. They overlap, but Gemini chat is not a replacement for the Maps app’s interactive map and live driving controls.
Availability varies by country, device, language, account type, and feature rollout. The status described here reflects Google’s announcements and help information available as of October 25, 2026.
What is the difference between Gemini with Google Maps and Google Maps’ built-in AI?
“Gemini with Google Maps” can mean two different things: using the consumer Gemini app to look up public Maps information, or using Gemini features inside Google Maps. The first is a conversational way to search for places and get directions. The second brings AI into map-based tasks such as planning, exploring, and navigating.

| What you need | Gemini app using Maps data | Google Maps’ built-in AI |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A conversation in Gemini, with a question about places or directions. | The Maps screen, a navigation session, or the camera-based Lens in Maps experience. |
| How results appear | Conversational answers and links to place details in Maps. | Map results, pins, routes, visual context, and navigation guidance. |
| Best suited to | Open-ended discovery, such as asking for places that fit a preference and following up with more questions. | Choosing a place on a map, planning stops, starting a route, or handling a question while traveling. |
| Live driving context | Can provide directions, but Gemini Apps does not provide live traffic updates. | Navigation features can respond to route context, traffic disruptions, and route alternatives as available. |
| Actions | Provides answers and a handoff to Maps place details; its saved-location access is limited. | Depending on the feature and availability, can help save or share places, make a reservation, start directions, or report a disruption. |
The practical distinction is not that one uses AI and the other does not. It is where the AI works and what context it can act on. Gemini chat is a useful starting point for a conversation; Maps is the better place to see the geography, check a route, and use navigation features.

What can Gemini do with Google Maps?
Gemini can search public Maps data for businesses, stores, restaurants, parks, and attractions. It can return available details such as addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings, and opening hours, as well as give directions by travel mode and account for toll avoidance.
How the Gemini-to-Maps handoff works
You can ask Gemini for a type of place or for directions, then open a linked place to see its Google Maps details page. Depending on the place, that page may offer its menu, website, social pages, directions, or a call option. This handoff matters: the conversational answer helps narrow the search, while the Maps page gives you a map-centered view and place-specific controls.
What Gemini can personalize
With permission, Gemini can use your device location to make place answers more relevant. It can also use your saved Work and Home locations. Google’s help information says the Maps connection in Gemini requires a signed-in personal experience with Gemini Apps Activity on; it is unavailable in Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. Google describes the feature as gradually rolling out in English to users aged 18 and over, so a missing feature may reflect eligibility or rollout rather than a problem with a prompt.
What Gemini Apps cannot do with Maps
Google documents several limits that distinguish Gemini chat from Maps itself. Gemini Apps cannot provide live traffic updates, post a review, save location history, or use saved places other than Work and Home. If you need a live route adjustment, a saved list, or a map control, move to the Maps app rather than expecting a conversational answer to update Maps state.
What is Ask Maps?
Ask Maps is Google Maps’ conversational experience for complex real-world questions. Instead of returning only a list of search matches, it can answer in conversation and produce a customized map that helps you evaluate options geographically.
Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026. Its examples include finding a place to charge a phone without a long wait, locating a well-lit public tennis court, and planning a trip with multiple stops. It can use places you have searched for or saved to personalize recommendations, and Google says it can help you book a reservation, save a list, share with friends, and start directions.
Those capabilities make Ask Maps more map-native than asking Gemini for recommendations and opening the results one by one. The results can be considered in their geographic context, and the experience can connect a recommendation to a map action. Google said the initial rollout was in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop coming soon; feature access can change as rollout expands.
How does Gemini in Google Maps help while driving?
Gemini in Maps navigation is designed for hands-free, route-aware requests. Google announced the driving features on November 5, 2025, including multi-step questions and requests that can be handled without switching to a separate chat.

- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Ask about a stop along the route
Google’s examples include asking for a budget-friendly vegan restaurant along your route, checking whether it has parking, and asking about dishes. These are more specific than a general place search because the request can be framed around the trip you are already taking.
Report a disruption or share trip information
During navigation, Google says Gemini can accept reports about disruptions such as accidents or flooding, share an ETA, and add a calendar event with permission. These actions are different from Gemini Apps’ general Maps search: they are tied to the Maps navigation experience and can involve actions beyond returning information.
Get directions using landmarks
Landmark-based navigation can describe turns using recognizable businesses and buildings rather than relying only on street names or distances. Google said this capability was rolling out in the United States. The goal is to make route instructions easier to relate to visible surroundings, though availability and the landmarks used depend on the route and rollout.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Explore places with Lens in Maps
Lens in Maps lets you point your camera at restaurants, shops, cafes, or landmarks and ask what a place is, why it is popular, or what its atmosphere is like. It is a visual way to explore what is around you, rather than the text-only place search you might start in Gemini chat.
Google said the November 2025 navigation features were rolling out on Android and iOS, with Android Auto to follow. Availability is feature-specific: for example, Google described landmark navigation as rolling out in the United States, not as universally available on every device.
What is Immersive Navigation?
Immersive Navigation is a map-native navigation update announced on March 12, 2026. It adds richer visual context and route guidance so a driver can better understand what is ahead and where to position the vehicle.
Google described features including 3D context for buildings, overpasses, and terrain; lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs; broader route views and smart zoom; and transparent buildings that help reveal the route. It also includes natural voice guidance, comparisons of alternate-route trade-offs, disruption alerts, destination previews, parking suggestions, entrance guidance, and information about which side of the street a destination is on.
Google said Maps incorporates more than 5 million traffic updates every second and receives more than 10 million driver disruption contributions each day. Those are Google’s figures from its 2026 Immersive Navigation announcement, not a guarantee that every report is immediately reflected in every user’s route. Google said the rollout began in the United States and would expand to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in.
Can Gemini answer live traffic questions or save my places?
Not in the same way as Google Maps. The consumer Gemini Apps connection can provide general directions, but Google explicitly lists live traffic updates and saved places beyond Work and Home among its limitations.
For a current drive, open Google Maps and use its navigation experience. Maps features can provide route context, disruption alerts, and alternate-route trade-offs as they become available for your device and location. For planning, Gemini can help discuss options, but Maps is the place to manage saved locations and view routes on the map.
Do not confuse “can recommend a place” with “can save it to your Maps account.” Google says Ask Maps can help save a list, but Gemini Apps’ documented saved-location access is limited to Work and Home. Those are separate experiences with separate capabilities.
Is Gemini better than Google Maps for trip planning?
It depends on whether you are still shaping the idea of a trip or need to turn it into a route. Gemini is useful for open-ended conversation—asking for a particular kind of place, refining your preferences, and getting a first set of details. Maps is more useful when you need to inspect locations, organize stops, see how they fit together geographically, or begin navigation.
Use Gemini when the question is still open-ended
- You want to explore a broad request, such as finding restaurants or attractions that meet several preferences.
- You want a conversational follow-up rather than starting with map controls.
- You need basic place details or directions and can open the linked Maps page for more.
Use Maps when the trip needs map actions
- You want to compare places by where they are and how they fit along a route.
- You are planning multiple stops, want to save or share places, or are ready to start directions.
- You need route-aware help, traffic-related context, or guidance during navigation.
For many trips, the choice is a sequence rather than an either-or decision: use Gemini to articulate what you are looking for, then use Maps to verify locations and manage the route. Ask Maps is intended to bridge more of that gap inside Maps, but its availability and capabilities depend on rollout.
What changes when you walk or cycle?
Gemini in Maps navigation is not limited to driving. In January 2026, Google announced that Gemini in navigation expanded to walking and cycling worldwide on iOS and Android wherever Gemini is available.
For walkers, Google describes conversational questions about neighborhoods and restaurants. For cyclists, examples include asking for an ETA and sending a hands-free message. As with other rollout statements, “worldwide” is qualified by Google’s condition that Gemini is available; it does not mean every language, account, device, or feature is supported in every location.
How do privacy and location permissions affect these features?
Location can make place answers and navigation more relevant, but the data used depends on the feature and your settings. Google’s Maps privacy help says Ask Maps answers, Lens in Maps, and Gemini in Navigation may use or store location. Personalized responses may also use account information, activity, and interests.

Gemini Apps’ Maps connection has its own stated requirements: a signed-in personal experience and Gemini Apps Activity turned on. For actions that need additional permission, such as adding a calendar event, Google says permission is required. Review the account and device settings relevant to location and activity if you do not want those signals used for personalization; feature controls and their labels may vary by platform.
What is Grounding with Google Maps for developers?
Grounding with Google Maps is a Gemini API tool for developers, not another consumer feature in the Gemini app or Google Maps. It lets a developer’s application ground responses in Maps data when a request has geographic context.
Google announced the API capability on October 17, 2025, saying developers could use current Maps data drawn from more than 250 million places. Its documentation says the Maps grounding tool can be invoked when a query has geographic context and can accept latitude and longitude to localize a request. That developer tool should not be confused with using the consumer Gemini app to look up places or with Ask Maps inside the Maps app.

Choose the starting point that matches the job. Gemini is the conversational front door for broad questions about places and basic directions; Google Maps is the operational tool for map views, routes, navigation, and map-linked actions.
- Start in Gemini for a flexible conversation about what kind of place you want, or to get basic place information and directions.
- Start in Google Maps when you need pins, route context, navigation, traffic-related information, or to save, share, or act on a place.
- Use Ask Maps when it is available and you want a complex local question answered with a customized map and follow-on actions.
- Use Gemini in navigation for hands-free questions or reports tied to a current driving, walking, or cycling trip where the feature is available.
Google said Maps contains more than 300 million places and draws on contributions from more than 500 million people in its March 2026 Ask Maps announcement. Those figures describe the scale of Maps, not a promise that every result is complete or equally detailed. Check the specific place page and route before relying on a detail that matters to your plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Gemini know whether a restaurant is open right now?
Gemini can return opening hours when they are available in Maps data, but an hours listing is not confirmation that a business is operating at this moment. Open the linked Maps place details and, when timing is critical, check the business’s own current information.
Can I use Grounding with Google Maps in my own app?
Yes, but it is a developer capability through the Gemini API, not a setting that turns consumer Gemini into a different Maps app. Google’s documentation describes a Maps grounding tool that can use geographic context and latitude-and-longitude localization.

Why don’t I see Ask Maps or Gemini navigation on my phone?
Google has described these features as rolling out gradually, and access can depend on country, operating system, language, account eligibility, and the particular feature. A device may have one Maps AI feature without having the others.
