Full-duplex radio can transmit and receive at the same time in the same frequency band. In theory, that lets a link use spectrum more efficiently and reduces the wait between opposite-direction transmissions. It does not automatically double every user’s speed: a radio must first stop its own much stronger outgoing signal from drowning out the incoming one, then manage interference elsewhere in the network. Research prototypes and 2026 projects show progress, but they do not establish widespread commercial mobile service.

What does full-duplex radio mean?

In-band full duplex (IBFD) means simultaneous transmission and reception on the same frequency band. It contrasts with two common ways of separating the directions: taking turns in time, or assigning different frequencies to uplink and downlink.

Radio arrangement How it separates directions What it means for the link
Half duplex, time division Transmit and receive at different times on a shared channel. The radio takes turns; it cannot send and receive simultaneously.
Frequency-division duplex Transmit and receive on separate frequency bands. Both directions can be active, but they do not share the same band.
In-band full duplex Transmit and receive simultaneously in the same band. It can reuse the channel in both directions, provided self-interference is suppressed.
Subband full duplex (SBFD) Transmit and receive simultaneously in different subbands within a larger band. It is full-duplex operation across subbands, not the same-frequency IBFD arrangement.

The terminology matters when judging a performance claim. A result for SBFD, frequency-separated operation, or rapid time-switching is not automatically evidence that a radio can transmit and receive simultaneously on precisely the same frequency.

Could it double wireless throughput?

“Could double” describes the idealized opportunity to use a channel in both directions at once; it is not a universal measured gain. A real network’s result depends on how well it cancels self-interference, how much interference other users and cells create, how traffic is distributed between uplink and downlink, and how the scheduler allocates radio resources.

Even with a strong cancellation chain, a network may not have matching traffic in both directions at the same time. Nor does a radio’s ability to reuse spectrum mean that every application’s end-to-end data rate will double: coverage, available bandwidth, congestion, device capability, and network scheduling still matter. Latency may also improve when a device need not wait for a transmit or receive turn, but the size of that improvement depends on the architecture and scheduling baseline.

Qualcomm’s January 2026 SBFD results illustrate why the baseline and conditions matter. In the company’s urban-macro simulation, uplink scheduling was available in every slot rather than one in five. Qualcomm reported about 50% lower median uplink latency, around 79% higher median uplink user-perceived throughput against a TDD baseline with perfect cross-link mitigation, and around 44% higher throughput without perfect mitigation. These are modeled SBFD results under Qualcomm’s stated assumptions, not a universal IBFD speed multiplier.

Why can’t a radio simply listen while it transmits?

The radio’s own transmitter is extremely close to its receiver, while the signal arriving from a distant device may be weak. Some outgoing energy leaks into the receiving path, creating self-interference that can swamp the wanted signal or overload receiver components. The central engineering problem is to reduce that leakage before it prevents the receiver from capturing the signal of interest.

Practical designs combine suppression methods at several points in the signal path. They address different parts of the problem, so digital processing alone is not necessarily enough: strong leakage may need to be reduced before the receiver converts the signal for digital processing.

  • Antenna and spatial isolation: antenna placement or design, polarization, beamforming, and spatial separation can reduce how much transmitted energy couples into the receiver.
  • RF or analog cancellation: circuitry can counter some leaked transmit energy before it overwhelms later receiver stages.
  • Digital cancellation: signal processing estimates and subtracts remaining interference, including effects caused by nonlinear components.

Samsung Research’s 2022 prototype combined an integrated self-interference-cancellation antenna, tunable RF cancellation, and nonlinear digital cancellation. Separately, Qualcomm’s SBFD discussion includes filtering, beamforming, scheduling, and coordination to address interference between links as well as leakage within a radio. Cancellation inside one device and interference management across users or cells are related but distinct problems.

What results have researchers and companies reported?

The figures below describe different architectures, metrics, and kinds of evidence. A cancellation figure measures suppression of unwanted signal, not a user’s throughput increase; a simulation or project target is not a field result.

Is full-duplex 5G or 6G available to phone users?

The available evidence establishes ongoing engineering work, not ubiquitous service. Samsung reported a 5G-oriented prototype in 2022; Science Tokyo announced a millimeter-wave research architecture in June 2026; Qualcomm described 2026 SBFD simulations and test evidence; and the NSF SBIR record schedules a prototype project for 2026–2028. None of those items demonstrates that a consumer can activate general-purpose, same-band full-duplex cellular service on an ordinary phone.

There is also no market-wide adoption percentage established by the evidence cited here. Treat claims about availability as specific to a named network, device, region, and architecture; do not infer commercial deployment from a prototype, simulation, or research announcement.

What would it take to try a full-duplex radio prototype?

A software-defined radio (SDR) can be part of a laboratory development setup, but it is not by itself a plug-and-play full-duplex system. A viable experiment may also need suitable RF front ends, antennas, isolation or cancellation circuitry, and signal-processing capability. NI documents a university real-time full-duplex prototype built with NI SDR products and LabVIEW; Stanford’s technology listing also describes a software-radio prototype. Those examples establish a development-hardware path, not the suitability of any particular retail model.

When evaluating a claimed implementation, check the architecture, tested frequency and bandwidth, cancellation chain, interference scope, evidence type, and performance baseline. A bench prototype, simulated gain, over-the-air experiment, field deployment, and consumer service are different levels of evidence. The Finnish Defence Research Agency’s February 2024 bulletin discusses potential applications, including military networks; potential use cases should not be mistaken for proof of deployment.
