Yes—legitimate free movie streaming sites are available in the United States. The best starting point for most viewers is Tubi for on-demand browsing, while Pluto TV is better if you want live movie channels. Library-card holders should also check Kanopy and Hoopla, which generally avoid commercial ad breaks.
This guide covers official, U.S.-focused services that are free through advertising, library or university access, or an official free-with-ads catalog. U.S. availability checked August 9, 2026. Movies, channels, apps, account requirements, and licensing change frequently, so always confirm a title on its detail page immediately before watching.
“Free” does not always mean the same thing. A service may show ads, require a participating library card, offer only scheduled live channels, or place free movies beside rentals and subscriptions. The comparison below separates those models so you can choose the right service without accidentally starting a trial or paying for a rental.

1. Tubi — best overall for most U.S. viewers
Tubi is the strongest first stop if you want to browse and start a conventional movie or TV title on demand. Tubi describes its service as free, legal, and supported by advertising, with thousands of hours of movies and shows from studios including Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM.
- What it is good for: Broad browsing, older studio movies, action, horror, genre films, television, and familiar categories.
- Cost and ads: Tubi says there is no subscription fee or credit card requirement. Advertising funds the service, and Tubi currently does not offer an ad-free option.
- Account: An account is useful for watchlists, personalization, and continuing across devices. Do not assume every title and device supports anonymous playback; requirements can vary.
- Devices: Tubi supports browsers, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, mobile devices, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense, Comcast/Xfinity, and other platforms, with model-specific limitations. Its device guide is the best place to check a particular television.
- Limitation: A movie can appear in search after its free license has changed, or it can be associated with a different access option. Open the title’s playback page and confirm that it is marked free.
How to watch: Visit tubitv.com, open the Movies section or search for a title, confirm the free label, and start playback. If the app fails, update it through the television or device app store; Tubi provides device-specific update instructions.

2. Pluto TV — best for live movie channels
Pluto TV combines scheduled linear channels with an on-demand library. It is a good choice when you want the cable-like experience of turning on a channel and seeing whatever movie is currently scheduled, rather than spending time choosing a specific title.
- Strengths: Live movie channels, themed programming, classic films, genre channels, and casual background viewing.
- Viewing model: Choose Live TV for scheduled programming or On Demand for titles you can select immediately.
- Ads: Commercial breaks are part of the free service.
- Devices: Pluto TV supports the web, mobile devices, connected TVs, and other platforms listed on its Where to Watch page.
- Limitation: A movie shown on a live channel may not be available in the on-demand section. Always check whether it is playable now or scheduled for later.
Open pluto.tv, then select Live TV or On Demand. Channel lineups and titles change, so Pluto’s current channel guide is more useful than a permanent channel-count claim.
3. The Roku Channel — best for Roku households and smart TVs
The Roku Channel offers free ad-supported movies, shows, Roku Originals, and live channels. A Roku streaming device is not required: Roku says the service is also available on the web, in its mobile app, on compatible Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Google TV devices.
- Strengths: A television-friendly interface, free movies and shows, live channels, and Roku Originals.
- Ads: Free content is ad-supported.
- Account: Requirements vary by device and content. An account can help with resuming viewing and managing subscriptions, but Roku’s interface also presents paid offerings.
- Limitation: The service mixes free content with rentals, purchases, and premium subscriptions. Look for the free label instead of assuming that every search result is included.
On a Roku device, press Home, select Free or Featured Free, and choose a title. On the web, go to therokuchannel.roku.com and open Free Movies & TV. Roku’s own pages have recently advertised different live-channel totals, including 350-plus and 500-plus, so those numbers should not be treated as permanent.
4. Plex — best combination of free streaming and personal media
Plex provides free ad-supported movies, shows, documentaries, and live TV alongside its better-known personal-media-server tools. That combination makes it useful for viewers who already organize their own media with Plex and want one additional source of free programming.
- Strengths: Free on-demand movies, live television, discovery tools, and watchlists that become more useful with an account.
- Account: Plex says an account is not required for basic free viewing. An account adds watchlists, personalization, and cross-device continuation.
- Ads: The free on-demand catalog is ad-supported. Plex Pass does not remove ads from that free catalog.
- Limitation: Plex combines free titles with rentals and personal media. Check the access label on the title page so you do not confuse a rental with a free stream.
Visit Plex On Demand, browse a movie category, select a title, and confirm that it is free before pressing play. Country and device availability can differ.
5. Xumo Play — best for no-account channel viewing
Xumo Play is a free, ad-supported service built around live channels and genre-based browsing. Xumo says basic viewing requires no subscription, account, or credit card.

- Catalog claims: Xumo advertises more than 300 channels and tens of thousands of movie and TV titles. These are changing service figures, not a permanent guarantee.
- Ads: Xumo does not offer an ad-free version.
- Limitation: Xumo is more channel-oriented than a traditional, carefully curated on-demand movie library. Device and market availability may vary.
Start at Xumo’s free-movies page or use the Xumo Play app. As with other FAST services, confirm whether a title is on demand or merely scheduled on a live channel.
6. Sling Freestream — best for a free live-TV guide
Sling Freestream is a separate free, ad-supported service—not merely a trial of paid Sling. It emphasizes a large live-TV guide, but it also includes a substantial on-demand selection.
- Catalog: Sling’s current pages advertise hundreds of live channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies. Its pages have used both 500-plus and 600-plus live-channel figures, so the more durable description is “hundreds of live channels and 40,000-plus on-demand titles.”
- Account: No account is required for basic viewing. A free account adds favorites, profiles, watchlists, parental controls, rewards, and 10 hours of free DVR storage.
- Strengths: A familiar guide, free movie channels such as FilmRise Free Movies and Shout! Movies, and optional DVR features.
- Ads: The free service is ad-supported.
- Limitation: It is primarily a live-TV/FAST experience rather than a dedicated movie library. Sling also promotes paid plans, rentals, and other paid options.
Visit watch.sling.com or open the Sling app, select Stream Free, and browse the movie channels or on-demand catalog. Create an account only if you need DVR, profiles, parental controls, or watchlists.

7. Prime Video’s free/ad-supported catalog — the current home for Freevee content
Amazon’s free, ad-supported movies, shows, originals, and live content now sit inside Prime Video. Do not treat Amazon Freevee as a current standalone destination: Amazon phased out the Freevee brand and standalone app, with the app transition reported as continuing through August 2025. The current destination is Prime Video’s free section.

- Strengths: Convenient for Amazon users, with free movies and shows alongside other video options.
- Account: An Amazon account is generally required to use Prime Video. You do not necessarily need a paid Prime membership for the free catalog.
- Ads: The free catalog is ad-supported.
- Important limitation: Prime Video places free, Prime-included, rental, purchase, and paid-channel titles in the same ecosystem. A prominent movie card does not prove that it is free.
Open Prime Video, find the free or watch-for-free area where it appears on your device, and inspect the title’s access label. Amazon’s interface varies by device, and the words Rent, Buy, Included with Prime, and Subscribe mean different things from free ad-supported viewing. 8. YouTube Movies & TV — best for official free movies on a familiar platform
YouTube Movies & TV includes rentals and purchases as well as a rotating selection of official free movies supported by ads. Google has described thousands of feature-length movies being available free with ads through its movie and TV experience, but the selection and interface change by country and device.
- Strengths: Familiar playback, easy access on many televisions and phones, and a rotating official movie selection.
- Ads: Free movies show ads. YouTube Premium is not required for eligible free titles; Premium may remove ads from eligible content.
- Account: A Google or YouTube account is normally part of the viewing experience, particularly for history and personalization.
- Limitation: The free section can be harder to find than a dedicated FAST service. A generic YouTube search result is not automatically licensed, official, or free.
Use YouTube’s official Movies & TV area or a verified rights-holder channel. Do not assume that an arbitrary user-uploaded full movie is authorized merely because it appears in search results.
9. Kanopy — best ad-free option for library-card holders and students
Kanopy is a library- and university-authorized service with an especially strong selection of documentaries, independent films, international cinema, educational programming, and other serious-film categories. It generally has no commercial ad breaks, but it is not universally available to every library-card holder.

- Tickets: Many public-library titles use monthly tickets. The library sets the allowance; tickets reset on the first day of each month, unused tickets do not roll over, and some high-demand titles can cost more than one ticket. Kanopy explains its ticket system here.
- Kids: Kanopy Kids titles do not use tickets.
- Offline viewing: Kanopy’s standard player requires an internet connection and does not normally support downloading videos for offline viewing.
- Limitations: Libraries may impose additional limits, temporarily restrict streaming, or reduce access to manage their budgets. Your library’s catalog is the catalog that matters, not the provider’s overall promotional catalog.
Setup: Go to kanopy.com, choose Get started, select Find your library, search by library name, city, or ZIP code, and enter your card details and PIN when prompted. Then create a Kanopy account and check the ticket cost before pressing Play. If your library cannot be found, contact the library rather than trying credentials from another institution. 10. Hoopla — best for library borrowing and offline mobile viewing
Hoopla lets patrons borrow movies, television, ebooks, comics, audiobooks, and music through participating libraries. For movie viewers, its key advantage over Kanopy is that most movie titles can be downloaded for offline viewing in supported mobile apps.
- Eligibility: You need a participating library, library card, PIN, and email address for a Hoopla account.
- Ads: Library-borrowed content has no commercial ad breaks.
- Devices: Movies can be streamed in a web browser and on devices such as Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Samsung TV, Chromecast, phones, and tablets, subject to current support requirements.
- Downloads: Most movie titles can be downloaded for offline use on supported mobile devices. Downloads are app-based and expire when the loan ends; they are not ordinary permanent files.
- Limits: Borrow limits and loan terms are set through the library arrangement and may vary substantially. BingePass and SeasonPass features can provide larger collections or entire seasons with one borrow, but availability differs.
Setup: Visit hoopladigital.com or install the official Hoopla app, create an account, select your library, enter your card number and PIN, open Movies, choose a title, and select Borrow. Which free movie service should you choose?
- Start with Tubi if you want to browse a broad general-purpose on-demand catalog.
- Choose Pluto TV if you like turning on a live movie channel and watching what is scheduled.
- Use The Roku Channel if you have a Roku or compatible smart TV and want free movies, shows, originals, and live channels in one interface.
- Try Plex if free streaming and personal media management are both useful to you.
- Pick Xumo Play if you want basic viewing without creating an account and prefer channels and genre collections.
- Use Sling Freestream if a large live-TV guide matters more than a tightly curated movie library.
- Check Prime Video if you already use Amazon, but inspect every access label carefully.
- Use YouTube Movies & TV when you want official free movies in an interface you already know.
- Check Kanopy if you have a participating library or university affiliation and prefer documentaries, independent films, or international cinema without commercial breaks.

Free movie sites with no account required
“No signup” lists often confuse no paid subscription with no login. The clearest no-account options for basic viewing in this guide are Xumo Play and Sling Freestream. Plex also says an account is not required for basic free viewing. Pluto TV, Tubi, and The Roku Channel can offer browsing and playback without a paid subscription, but the exact requirement may depend on the device, title, or feature.

How to find one specific movie for free
Free catalogs rotate, so a service ranking is less useful than a repeatable title-search process:
- Search the movie on two or three official services, starting with Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, Xumo Play, Prime Video, and YouTube Movies & TV.
- Open the title’s detail or playback page. Do not rely only on a search thumbnail or an old article.
- Confirm the exact access label: Free, Watch free, or the equivalent. Do not confuse it with Rent, Buy, Included with Prime, or Subscribe.
- Check whether the film is available on demand now or only scheduled for later on a live channel.
- Check the country, device, language, captions, and age-rating details if those matter to you.
- If you have a library card, search Kanopy and Hoopla through your own library. A title may be available there without ads even when commercial services charge for it.
- If the film is unavailable, check again later. Licensing windows change, and a movie can move from free streaming to a rental, between services, or out of the U.S. catalog.
What does free mean?
There are several distinct models:
- Free with ads
- Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Prime Video’s free catalog, and YouTube’s official free-movie selection use advertising to fund at least part of the experience.
- Free with a library card
- Kanopy and Hoopla are funded through participating libraries or universities. You are borrowing access under the institution’s terms rather than receiving an unlimited commercial subscription.
- Free without an account
- Some services permit basic playback without a login, but an account may be needed for profiles, watchlists, parental controls, DVR, or particular devices.
- Free only after a trial
- A free trial is not a permanently free service. It normally requires payment details and can become a paid subscription if not canceled.
- Free live channels
- A movie may be free when broadcast on a scheduled channel but unavailable for immediate on-demand playback.
- Free mixed with paid video
- Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Plex, YouTube, and other interfaces can place free titles next to rentals, purchases, premium channels, or subscriptions.
Are free movie streaming sites legal?
Official services with identifiable companies, rights-holder relationships, advertising businesses, or library and university licensing arrangements are the practical legal alternatives to unauthorized streaming. Tubi explicitly describes its service as legal, while Kanopy and Hoopla operate through participating institutions.
That does not mean every website with a play button is authorized. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that unauthorized streaming can implicate copyright owners’ exclusive rights, and the 2020 copyright legislation created criminal penalties for certain commercial digital-transmission services designed to stream copyrighted works without authorization. The safest rule for viewers is to use the official website or app of a recognizable service and avoid sites offering current theatrical releases without a credible licensing explanation.

How free streaming services make money
- Advertising: Most FAST services sell commercial inventory around free movies and channels.
- Library and university funding: Kanopy and Hoopla operate through agreements with participating institutions.
- Paid upsells: Some platforms place free programming beside premium plans, paid channels, rentals, and purchases.
- Personalization and measurement: Services may use viewing and device information for recommendations, advertising, security, or analytics subject to their privacy policies.
Therefore, “free” usually means you pay with attention rather than a monthly subscription. It does not mean the service has no business model or collects no information.
Which services have ads?
Assume advertising on Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex’s free catalog, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Prime Video’s free catalog, and YouTube’s free movie selection. Tubi says it does not currently offer an ad-free option, Xumo says it does not offer an ad-free version, and Plex Pass does not remove ads from Plex’s free on-demand catalog.
Kanopy and Hoopla are the strongest choices when you want to avoid commercial ad breaks, although eligibility, tickets, borrow limits, and institutional rules apply. Do not claim that one ad-supported service has fewer ads than another without a documented, repeatable test across comparable movies and devices.

The major services generally target web browsers, iOS and Android phones and tablets, Roku, Fire TV, Google TV or Android TV, and selected smart TVs. Some also support Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Chromecast, or specific cable-provider platforms. Support is not universal: television model year, operating-system version, country, and app availability can matter.
Before buying or sideloading anything:
- Search the official app store on the TV or streaming device.
- Check the service’s official device page, such as Pluto TV’s device list, Tubi’s platform guide, or Roku’s access instructions.
- If no app exists, use the official web player or cast/AirPlay from a supported device if the service permits it.
- Do not install an unofficial APK, browser extension, codec, or “special player” just to watch a movie.
Can you download free movies?
Hoopla supports official in-app downloads for most movies on compatible mobile devices. The downloaded title is tied to the loan and expires when the borrowing period ends.
Kanopy requires an internet connection through its standard player and does not normally provide offline downloads. Most ad-supported FAST services in this guide are designed for streaming rather than downloading.
Do not treat browser download tools, screen recording, or third-party download websites as equivalent to an official offline feature. If a service does not provide a download button in its official app, assume offline copying is unsupported and may violate the service’s terms or copyright rules.
How to spot unsafe free movie sites
Use the official domain and official app-store listing. Lower-risk indicators include a recognizable company or library behind the service, normal commercial breaks, ordinary account and privacy controls, and a player that works without extra downloads.
Be especially cautious when a site:
- Offers brand-new theatrical movies without identifying a rights holder or licensing model.
- Shows several fake play buttons or repeatedly redirects you to unrelated websites.
- Requests an unknown browser extension, APK, codec, VPN, or media player.
- Demands notification permissions before playback.
- Opens gambling, dating, adult, download, or other unrelated pages.
- Shows a payment form after advertising a supposedly free movie.
- Uses a domain that imitates Tubi, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, or another known brand.
- Provides no company, institutional, privacy, or contact information.
The Federal Trade Commission warns about malware in illegal streaming apps and advises consumers to avoid unfamiliar sites that offer free movies, shows, music, or games for download. Children and family viewing

A movie appears in search but is not free
The license may have expired, the title may be available only in another country, or the result may point to a rental, premium channel, or live broadcast. Open the detail page and verify the access label. If it is not free, check another official service or your library platforms.
The site asks for a credit card
A TV app store may request payment details for the device account, and a legitimate service may request them for optional rentals or subscriptions. But a supposedly free movie site that demands a card before playback deserves caution. Never enter payment details after a suspicious redirect, and check whether you are approving a trial, rental, purchase, or channel subscription.
The app is unavailable on your TV
- Use the official web player.
- Cast or AirPlay from a supported phone or tablet if available.
- Check the TV’s operating system and model requirements.
- Use a supported Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, or Apple TV device.
- Do not sideload an unofficial APK or install a third-party player.
Your library is missing from Kanopy or Hoopla
The library may not participate, your card may be expired or blocked, your PIN may have changed, or the institution may have temporarily limited access. Contact the library directly. Random credentials or third-party access methods are not legitimate substitutes for library eligibility.

The movie is unavailable outside the United States
Streaming rights are territorial. A U.S. catalog is not a global catalog, and a title that appears in a search engine may not be playable from your location. Use services offered in your country and check their local catalog. A VPN does not automatically make an out-of-region stream authorized; geographic availability and platform terms vary.
A service or app suddenly disappears

Services that need extra verification
Crackle
Crackle has historically been a legitimate free streaming service, but its current U.S. availability and official consumer endpoint should be rechecked immediately before publication or use. Current listings conflict: JustWatch still lists Crackle, while reporting and historical information raise questions about its operational status after the 2024 bankruptcy and liquidation of its former parent company. Popcornflix and other services
Older lists may also be out of date for Popcornflix. Verify its official site, current app-store listing, U.S. availability, ownership, and licensing before recommending it.
Services such as Fandango at Home, Samsung TV Plus, Vizio WatchFree+, FilmRise, ViX, Philo Free, and MyFree DirecTV may be useful additions, but each needs a current check of whether it has a standalone website, whether its movies are actually free rather than rentals, which devices it supports, whether it is primarily live or on demand, and whether it requires an account. Consumer Reports’ February 2026 roundup identifies many of these as part of the broader free-streaming market.
