The graduate subject covers ways to make deep learning more efficient and deployable, including model compression, pruning, quantization, neural architecture search, and distributed training. MIT’s Fall 2024 course page also provides public lectures, slides, and labs.
What is MIT course 6.5940?
6.5940 is an MIT graduate course on efficient deep learning methods and systems. Its Fall 2026 catalog listing names S. Han as instructor and assigns the subject 3-0-9 units. The catalog describes an open-ended design project alongside the technical topics.
The course has appeared under the earlier number 6.S965. The older description is useful for understanding the course’s history, but it is not a substitute for the current catalog’s scope: the current listing uses 6.5940 and describes a somewhat different topic mix.
MIT’s Fall 2026 Course 6 listing is the current source for the number and offering. The MIT EECS catalog provides the subject description.

What does the course cover?
The emphasis is on improving the efficiency of deep learning across models, training systems, and deployment settings. The current catalog includes:
- Model compression, pruning, and quantization
- Neural architecture search
- Distributed training, including data and model parallelism
- Gradient compression and on-device fine-tuning
- Applications such as video recognition, point clouds, diffusion models, and large language models
The Fall 2024 course page presents the subject as a combination of efficient machine learning and systems work. Its hands-on activities included implementing compression techniques and deploying Llama2-7B on a laptop. That is an example from the 2024 materials, not a stated hardware specification for the Fall 2026 course.

What are the prerequisites?
For its Fall 2026 listing, MIT names 6.1910 and 6.3900 as prerequisites. Students should be prepared for material that assumes a foundation in computation structures and machine learning rather than treating the class as a first introduction to either field.
The Fall 2024 course page used the earlier labels 6.191, Computation Structures, and 6.390, Intro to Machine Learning, and described a petition route for equivalent prior experience. Course numbers and labels can change; use the current catalog listing when checking eligibility for the later offering.

Are the course materials free?
The Fall 2024 page links lecture videos, slides, and labs. These publicly linked materials are a practical way to explore the subject, although their availability does not establish that every element of a future offering will be identical.
Start with the MIT HAN Lab Fall 2024 course page for those materials. The page also documents the laptop-based Llama2-7B deployment activity.

Do you need a textbook or microcontroller board?
The catalog says, “No textbook information available.” This means it does not list textbook information; it does not rule out supplementary reading being useful.
The catalog and linked course page do not specify a required laptop configuration or name a required microcontroller board. MIT’s older description of 6.S965 mentions implementing applications on microcontrollers and mobile phones, but that historical scope does not establish a board requirement for 6.5940.

A Raspberry Pi Pico is one possible optional development board for someone independently pursuing microcontroller projects. It is not specified, recommended, or required by the cited MIT materials. Check that any board and software you choose fit your own project before buying hardware.
How should you interpret the course’s history?
MIT EECS material describes the earlier 6.S965 version with topics including transfer learning, federated learning, efficient kernels, auto-tuning, benchmarking, profiling, quantum machine learning, and application-specific work. It also explicitly refers to microcontroller and mobile-phone implementations. Those details show the course’s historical breadth; the current catalog’s description should guide expectations for 6.5940.
The Fall 2024 page noted that the course would not be offered in Fall 2025 because Professor Han was on sabbatical. That dated notice does not conflict with MIT’s separate Fall 2026 listing. Check the current catalog for the offering relevant to your plans.
