Those steps can call HTTP services, query data, request human input, send messages, or invoke another pipeline. Rather than building a workflow by clicking through a visual editor, Flowpipe’s stated approach is “Code, not clicks.”
How Flowpipe organizes a workflow
The core unit is a pipeline, a sequence of steps that performs a task. A trigger starts that pipeline in response to an event or request. Pipelines and triggers are packaged in mods, which use HCL for their definitions. Flowpipe requires a mod to run, so a mod is the starting point for running your own workflow or using a library mod.
The official learning guide introduces a pipeline with an HTTP step and an output, then shows how to install a library mod, run one of its pipelines, and compose it into another workflow. In that example, Flowpipe detects data dependencies between steps and runs them in the required order. That makes it possible to build a larger workflow from reusable pieces rather than writing every operation from scratch.
What a pipeline step can do
- Call an HTTP service.
- Query data.
- Request input from a person.
- Send a message.
- Run another pipeline.
These capabilities let a workflow combine systems and people—for example, gather data, ask for a decision, and then call a service or start another pipeline.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to start a workflow
Flowpipe documents several ways to start a pipeline. The right trigger depends on what should initiate the operation:
| Start method | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Manual run | Run an operation on demand, such as a task an operator chooses to start. |
| Schedule | Run recurring maintenance or other time-based jobs. |
| Webhook | Start a pipeline when an external system sends a request. |
| Query trigger | Use the query-trigger option described in the learning guide. |
| Data change | Start a workflow in response to a change in data, as listed on the product site. |
The product site lists manual runs, schedules, webhooks, and changes in data; the learning guide also describes query triggers. The documentation establishes these as available trigger approaches, but does not establish that every trigger is interchangeable or appropriate for every deployment.

Messages, human input, and integrations
Workflows can include communication as well as service calls. The learning guide describes message steps for Slack and email, and says integrations can route message and input steps through Slack, Microsoft Teams, or email. Integrations load in server mode. A server can use a default HTTP integration/notifier or be configured with other integrations without changing the pipeline code.
This separation is useful when the workflow logic should stay stable while the team’s communication route differs by environment. The documented behavior is specific to message and input integration routing; it should not be read as a claim that every service integration works identically.

Where Flowpipe can run
The product site describes running Flowpipe locally, on a cloud virtual machine, or inside a container cluster. Choose a location based on where the workflow needs to reach services and how your team operates it; the reviewed product material does not provide comparative cost, performance, reliability, or security rankings for these choices.
| Deployment location | Best considered when | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Local machine | You want to run a workflow from a workstation. | Local execution is listed as an option by the product site. |
| Cloud VM | You want a workflow engine running on a cloud virtual machine. | Cloud VM execution is listed as an option by the product site. |
| Container cluster | Your environment uses container orchestration. | Execution inside container clusters is listed as an option by the product site. |
The repository README documents Homebrew installation on macOS, a shell install script for Linux or Windows under WSL, and building the binary from source. Because installation commands and supported versions can change, consult the official Flowpipe documentation for current installation instructions before setting up an environment.

Mods, integrations, and reusable workflows
Flowpipe’s repository lists library mods for services including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, GitHub, Jira, Okta, PagerDuty, SendGrid, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zendesk. The product site points to Flowpipe Hub for open-source libraries and examples. Treat the available catalog and individual mod versions as changeable rather than fixed; review the current Hub listing for the integrations your workflow needs.
The project describes use cases such as routine cloud operations, ChatOps, security and compliance response, AI-related multi-step workflows, and scheduled jobs. It also says workflows can process data from databases, APIs, and structured files, and can include containers and custom functions. These are vendor-described applications, not independently measured outcomes.

Repository license and branded product terms are different
The repository states that it is published under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3.0 (AGPL-3.0). The same repository says the Flowpipe product is produced exclusively by Turbot HQ, Inc. and distributed under Turbot’s commercial terms; it also says other parties may create their own distributions subject to restrictions involving Turbot trademarks and cloud services. Do not assume that the repository license alone describes the terms for using the branded product. If licensing affects your deployment or redistribution, review the current repository license and notices alongside the applicable commercial terms.
What to weigh before adopting Flowpipe
- Code-first workflow design: HCL-defined mods and pipelines suit teams that want workflow definitions in code and composed from reusable pipelines.
- Trigger fit: Match the workflow’s intended start condition—manual, scheduled, webhook, query, or data change—to the trigger documented for that use.
- Communication route: Check whether the available integrations cover the team’s message and input channels, and account for the server-mode requirement described in the guide.
- Run location: Choose local, VM, or container-cluster execution based on your operating environment rather than an unsupported performance comparison.
- Terms: Distinguish the repository’s AGPL-3.0 license from the branded product’s commercial terms.
The official documentation and repository establish what Flowpipe is designed to do and show examples; they do not establish independent evidence about reliability, security, performance, user satisfaction, or total cost.
