The Interactive Map of the Linux Kernel is a visual index for finding your way among selected kernel subsystems, functions, and structures. Start with the part of the kernel you care about, use the map to spot connections, then follow an entry to source cross-references or documentation. Treat it as an orientation aid—not proof of a function’s role in every kernel version or a substitute for reading the source.

What the interactive map shows

The project description presents a graphical map of prominent functions and structures grouped into major Linux kernel subsystems. You can zoom and move around the map, then select an entry to follow links to Linux Cross Reference or kernel documentation. That makes it useful for answering two early questions: where should I look, and what other parts of the kernel are connected to this area?

The coverage figure needs a date attached: Hackaday reported over 400 prominent functions and structures in September 2023, arranged in seven rows and seven columns, with arrows depicting relationships. That is a historical report, not a verified current inventory; the project description does not state a current count or map version. Hackaday’s 2023 report, mirrored at Vuink, provides that dated context.

How to use it to find a function

  1. Choose a subsystem or area. Begin with the broad domain related to your question rather than searching the whole kernel at random. The map is organized around major subsystems, so it can help orient you when you know the general area but not the function’s name.
  2. Navigate the diagram. Zoom in and move through the graphical layout until you can inspect relevant entries and their depicted relationships.
  3. Open a function or structure entry. Follow its outgoing link to Linux Cross Reference or kernel documentation, as offered by the project. Use those resources to inspect the declaration, references, and explanatory material relevant to your question.
  4. Check the kernel version you care about. Confirm that the linked source or documentation corresponds to the kernel version and configuration under investigation. The available project description establishes outgoing links, but does not establish that every link works today or that the map provides a current-version selector.
  5. Trace the evidence in context. Read the surrounding source and references before concluding what invokes a function or what it does. A relationship shown on a high-level map is a lead for investigation, not a complete account of execution.

What the map can—and cannot—tell you

  • Good for orientation: seeing a selected set of functions and structures in relation to subsystem groupings can help narrow a search and suggest connections to inspect.
  • Not the entire kernel: the map depicts prominent selected items; it is not a replacement for the Linux source tree or a guarantee that a particular symbol appears.
  • Not a runtime call graph: a broad architectural overview does not show which path executed for one workload, nor prove that a depicted connection occurs in a particular run.
  • Version matters: source, documentation, configuration, and modules can differ across kernel versions, so verify findings against the target environment.

When you need the path from an actual run

If the question is “what ran when this workload executed?” rather than “where does this function fit?”, use tracing-based evidence. The Kernel Visualization Tool repository describes workflows using SystemTap or DTrace to generate dynamic paths and graphs. A useful distinction is:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Approach Best suited to What it provides Setup and limits
Interactive Kernel Map Subsystem orientation and discovery of possible relationships A browser-based visual overview with links to source cross-reference and documentation, according to the project description Does not establish a function’s runtime path; validate findings in the relevant kernel version
Kernel Visualization Tool Investigating paths observed during a particular execution The repository documents trace-based workflows and generated graphs Requires a compatible local tracing workflow; supported kernels, modules, and trace environments must be checked for the target system

Use the map to identify where to investigate, then use a trace when you need evidence about a specific execution. These approaches answer different questions; neither makes the other redundant.
