Figure says an AI agent built with Sierra is designed to help lenders move stalled home-equity line of credit (HELOC) applications forward. The agent follows up with applicants by voice and SMS, assists with routine verification and account-linking steps, then hands the borrower to a loan officer to finalize the loan. Figure reported encouraging pilot results, but its September 10, 2026 announcement does not provide enough methodological detail to establish that the agent caused those gains or that other lenders would see the same outcomes.
What Figure’s AI loan assistant does
Figure Technology Solutions announced the partnership with Sierra on September 10, 2026. The system uses Sierra’s Horizon platform to power an agent trained by Figure and integrated natively into Figure’s loan origination system. Figure described the deployment as the first U.S. use of Horizon.
This is an enterprise workflow tool for lenders, not a consumer AI assistant for shopping for a mortgage or managing personal finances. Its focus is applicants who have started a home-equity loan process but stopped before completing it.

How the follow-up works
The agent contacts stalled applicants through voice and SMS and can continue working with them autonomously over multiple days. Figure says it helps with routine points of friction such as obtaining permission for a credit check, identity verification, and linking a bank account. When the applicant is ready for the loan to be finalized, the agent transfers the process to a loan officer.

The announced workflow therefore combines automated follow-up and task support with a human handoff. The release does not specify the agent’s exact conversation scripts, contact frequency, escalation triggers, supported languages, or how applicants can change their communication preferences.
What Figure reported about performance
Figure attributed the following early results to its own performance-data analysis conducted in July 2026 and reported in the September 10 announcement. They are company-reported findings; the release gives no sample size, detailed methodology, comparison-group construction, or confidence intervals.

These figures should be read as promising pilot results rather than a guarantee of performance. The release does not establish that using the agent caused the differences, and it does not show whether the results generalize to lenders with different applicant populations, processes, or loan-origination systems.

Figure cited a 49% average HELOC closing pull-through rate in 2024, attributing it to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s 2025 Home Equity Lending Study. That market statistic is separate from Figure’s pilot results; the announcement does not provide the underlying study’s methodology.

The same announcement said nationwide HELOC volume was $271 billion in 2025 and that U.S. homeowners held $35 trillion in home equity. It did not identify the original publisher of the volume figure or provide a measurement date or original source for the equity estimate. These figures describe the market context Figure used to explain the opportunity, not measured outcomes of the AI-agent pilot.
Availability and what lenders should verify
In its September 10, 2026 release, Figure said it planned to make the integration available to network partners “over the coming months.” That was a forward-looking statement at the time of the announcement; it does not establish current availability. Lenders should confirm directly with Figure whether the integration is now offered to them and what deployment conditions apply.

The announcement does not state pricing, referral or reseller terms, commission arrangements, or other commercial terms. It also does not describe implementation requirements beyond the native integration into Figure’s loan origination system. A lender evaluating a similar tool would need to establish whether its own systems and workflows are supported and how the agent hands cases to staff.

- Which applicant tasks and communication channels are supported, and can borrowers set or change contact preferences?
- How does the tool integrate with the lender’s loan origination system and existing identity, credit, and bank-linking processes?
- When does the agent stop and transfer a case to a loan officer, and what information is passed along?
- What are the deployment timeline, eligibility requirements, pricing, and contractual terms?
- What evidence supports expected conversion results, including sample size, comparison design, and performance across different borrower groups?
Why the announcement matters—and what remains unknown
HELOC applications can stall during administrative steps before funding. Figure’s approach aims to use repeated automated outreach to help applicants complete those steps while retaining a loan officer for finalization. If the reported results hold up in broader use, that could help lenders recover applications that might otherwise go unfunded. The public announcement, however, supplies neither the methodological detail needed to validate the results nor evidence that the system will deliver the same improvement at other lenders.

Figure CEO Michael Tannenbaum described the goal as “human-agent synergy,” with the agent supporting loan officers rather than replacing them. The practical value will depend on the quality of the integration, the agent’s handling of borrower friction, and whether lenders can verify outcomes against an appropriate comparison—not on the headline percentage alone.
