There is no universal winner. Choose Ubuntu if you want a clearly documented long-term-support option; Linux Mint if you prefer its Cinnamon desktop and a listed support date through April 2029; or Fedora Workstation if you want the Fedora Project’s GNOME desktop and are comfortable checking its release policy. These recommendations follow official release and support information, not hands-on performance testing. The current versions and dates below were checked on October 21, 2026.
At a glance: which distribution should you choose?
For everyday use, the most meaningful differences established by the projects’ current information are the available release choices, documented support horizons, and desktop environments. Those facts can narrow the choice, but they cannot determine which interface you will prefer or how well a specific computer will work. If possible, try the desktop on your own hardware before installing.
| Choose | What the current official information establishes | Best fit if you prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS | Standard security maintenance through May 2031; expanded security maintenance listed through May 2036. Ubuntu release cycle | A long, clearly documented support horizon and an LTS release. |
| Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon | The current release listing identifies Cinnamon, an Ubuntu Noble package base, and support through April 2029. Linux Mint releases | Cinnamon and the current Mint release’s stated support period. |
| Fedora Workstation 44 | The Workstation page describes a GNOME desktop; Fedora’s homepage identifies version 44 as the latest release and announces Fedora 45 Beta. Fedora Workstation · Fedora Project | The Fedora Workstation release and its GNOME desktop, with a willingness to check the current support policy. |
The table is a decision aid, not a speed, reliability, or satisfaction ranking. No controlled comparison establishes that one of these distributions is faster, easier, or more dependable for every user. The desktop descriptions are useful for identifying which interface to try; personal preference is not an objective winner.

What is current, and why Ubuntu’s release choice matters
“Ubuntu” does not refer to only one current desktop release. Its download page identifies Ubuntu Desktop 26.10 as the latest version, with maintenance and security updates listed through July 2027. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is a separate choice: it was released on April 23, 2026 and is designated a long-term-support release. Its standard security maintenance runs through May 2031, while expanded security maintenance is listed through May 2036. Ubuntu Desktop downloads · Ubuntu 26.04 release notes · Ubuntu release cycle

Ubuntu’s desktop guidance describes LTS releases as receiving five years of support and security updates. When choosing between 26.10 and 26.04 LTS, pay attention to the release type and its published maintenance horizon rather than assuming the latest-numbered release is automatically the best fit. Ubuntu guidance on LTS and interim releases
Linux Mint’s current listed release is 22.3 Zena Cinnamon. The project lists it as a long-term-support release supported until April 2029 and identifies its package base as Ubuntu Noble. The fact that Mint is based on Ubuntu does not make its release or support date identical to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS; use Mint’s own release listing when evaluating Mint. Linux Mint releases

Fedora Workstation 44 was released on April 28, 2026. Fedora’s homepage also announces Fedora 45 Beta, so the latest stable release and the beta should not be confused. The official pages cited here do not establish Fedora 44’s end-of-support date. Check Fedora’s current release policy before installing if you need to plan around a specific maintenance deadline; do not infer a date from the Ubuntu or Mint timelines. Fedora Project

Linux Mint 22.3: Cinnamon
The current Mint release listing names Cinnamon. Choose Mint if you specifically want to try that desktop, but do not treat the listing as evidence that every new user will find it easier or that it will perform better on a particular machine. Linux Mint releases
Ubuntu Desktop: decide by release and try the interface
The Ubuntu sources cited here establish the current desktop download and the 26.04 LTS option, but do not provide a like-for-like qualitative comparison of Ubuntu’s interface against GNOME in Fedora Workstation or Cinnamon in Mint. If interface preference is your main concern, use the official Ubuntu download and release information to select a version, then try it rather than relying on an unsupported claim that one desktop is objectively simpler. Hardware requirements: what the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
| Distribution and source | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Fedora, general variant guidance on the project page accessed October 21, 2026 | 40 GB disk space and 4 GB RAM; the page says double may provide a better experience depending on use. | The figures apply to most Fedora variants as general guidance. They are not a Fedora Workstation benchmark. Fedora Workstation download page |
| Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS release notes | 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB RAM, and 25 GB free storage. | The notes describe these as requirements for a comfortable experience for this release. Ubuntu 26.04 release notes |
| Linux Mint 22.3 | Not stated in the cited current release listing. | That listing establishes the release, base, desktop, and support date, but not a comparable hardware requirement. Linux Mint releases |
These figures come from different pages and are not a controlled head-to-head test. They do not establish which distribution runs best on the same computer, and the Mint release listing cited here does not provide a matching requirement. Do not use the RAM or storage numbers alone to predict responsiveness. Check the requirements for the exact release you plan to install, and verify that your computer’s components work with it.
A practical way to choose before installing
- Decide how long you want to plan between release decisions. If a published support horizon is central to your choice, compare Ubuntu 26.04 LTS’s standard maintenance date with Mint 22.3’s listed date. For Fedora, check its current policy directly rather than assuming a support end date from the release number.
- Pick the desktop you want to try. Fedora Workstation is described as GNOME, while Mint 22.3 is listed as Cinnamon. For Ubuntu, consult its current desktop download information; the sources here do not establish an objective interface winner.
- Choose the exact release, not just the distribution name. Ubuntu’s current download page lists 26.10, while its 26.04 LTS release notes document a distinct LTS option. Fedora’s homepage lists 44 as latest and separately announces 45 Beta. Mint’s current listing identifies 22.3 Zena Cinnamon. Confirm that the download you select is the stable release you intend to install.
- Check the specific computer. Compare its available memory and storage with the published guidance for the exact release. Then verify hardware compatibility for that computer; general system figures do not guarantee that every component will work.
- Try before committing when live media is available. A live USB can let you evaluate a desktop on your own hardware before installation. Fedora’s official page explains writing a live version of Fedora Linux to a flash drive. The sources here do not establish identical live-media instructions for all three distributions, so follow the official instructions for the distribution and release you choose. Fedora Workstation download and live USB information
For installation media, use a USB flash drive and the distribution’s official instructions. No specific drive brand, speed, or capacity is established by the cited information. Before installing any operating system, make sure important files are backed up and that you understand which storage device and installation option you are selecting.
Which one is easiest for a beginner?
The evidence here does not support naming one distribution as the easiest for every beginner. The published material establishes support dates, release choices, desktop names, and limited system guidance—not comparative usability tests. A beginner can make the decision more concrete by trying the available desktop, checking that essential hardware works, and choosing a release whose maintenance horizon matches their willingness to revisit upgrades.
If you do not have a strong desktop preference, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is a defensible starting point when its documented standard maintenance through May 2031 is appealing. Mint 22.3 is a reasonable choice if you prefer Cinnamon and its support-through-April-2029 listing fits your plans. Fedora Workstation makes sense if you want Fedora’s GNOME desktop, provided you check the current support policy and release details. These are conditional recommendations, not claims that one is universally simpler.
Quick Recap
Common decision mistakes to avoid
- Comparing an LTS release with an interim release as if their timelines match. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.10 have different listed maintenance dates; check the exact release page before downloading.
- Treating Mint’s Ubuntu base as an identical support schedule. Mint 22.3 has its own published support date, April 2029. Use the Mint listing rather than substituting an Ubuntu date.
- Assuming Fedora 44’s support end date from another distribution’s policy. The Fedora pages cited here do not establish that date. Consult the current Fedora policy if it affects your decision.
- Reading minimum or general requirements as a speed ranking. Fedora’s figures are general variant guidance, Ubuntu’s are for a comfortable Ubuntu 26.04 LTS experience, and the cited Mint listing has no comparable number. None is a benchmark.
- Installing based only on a desktop’s name. GNOME and Cinnamon labels identify interfaces, not a guaranteed personal preference or hardware result. Try the system where possible.
