Microsoft’s current long-term servicing release is Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024, based on Windows 11 24H2, build 26100. The official evaluation ISO is available from Microsoft for a 90-day trial. A production ISO is not a free general-purpose Windows download: OEMs and organizations must obtain licensed media through an authorized IoT distributor, Volume Licensing, or an eligible Visual Studio subscription.

This guide covers the correct download, architecture selection, ISO verification, bootable USB creation, clean installation, activation, and post-installation checks.

Before downloading: licensing and intended use

Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC is licensed for fixed-function specialized devices, such as industrial equipment, kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, medical systems, and digital signage. It is not a free substitute for Windows 11 Home, Pro, or Enterprise on a normal personal computer.

For production deployment, obtain media and licensing through the appropriate channel:

  • OEMs building new devices: an authorized Windows IoT distributor.
  • Organizations upgrading existing fixed-function devices: Volume Licensing, such as a Microsoft Customer Agreement, Microsoft Product and Services Agreement, or Select/Select Plus agreement.
  • Visual Studio subscribers: subscription media where Windows IoT Enterprise is included.

The evaluation image is suitable for testing, prototyping, and lab use. Microsoft says it should not be used to upgrade an existing Windows installation.

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 requirements

Microsoft documents preferred requirements as well as lower optional requirements for specialized hardware.

Component Preferred minimum
Processor 1 GHz, 2 cores
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB, preferably SSD
Firmware UEFI
Security TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled
Graphics DirectX 12
Display 9-inch diagonal, 720p HD

For specialized devices, Microsoft also lists an optional baseline of a 1 GHz two-core processor, 2 GB RAM, and 16 GB storage. That configuration can use HDD, SSHD, eMMC, SD, or USB storage; BIOS, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot may be optional. However, meeting this lower baseline does not guarantee satisfactory performance or application compatibility.

Use the processor-support documentation to confirm that the target CPU is supported. An ARM64 ISO cannot be installed on a conventional x64 desktop or laptop.

How to download the evaluation ISO

  1. Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC Evaluation page.
  2. Select either the x64 or AMD64 ISO or the ARM64 ISO.
  3. Register with the information requested by Microsoft.
  4. Complete the download.
  5. Record the location and filename of the downloaded ISO.

Do not use third-party “pre-activated” ISO sites. Apart from licensing problems, modified installation media can contain malware, unwanted software, or changes that prevent reliable servicing.

Verify the ISO with SHA-256

A hash check confirms that the downloaded file matches Microsoft’s published file. Microsoft provides the official values in Windows11IoTEnterpriseLTSC2024EvalHashValues.pdf.

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash "C:PathWindows11IoTEnterpriseLTSC2024.iso" -Algorithm SHA256

Replace the path with the actual ISO location. The currently published English (United States) values are:

Image SHA-256
x64 or AMD64 8ABF91C9CD408368DC73AAB3425D5E3C02DAE74900742072EB5C750FC637C195
ARM64 CCEC358A760C3C581249F091ED42D04F37B2B99C347B7A58257C3CC272D7982C

The result must match exactly, ignoring uppercase and lowercase differences. If it does not, delete the file and download it again. A mismatch can indicate an incomplete, corrupted, or unofficial ISO.

Create a bootable USB installer

Microsoft’s IoT deployment instructions use a FAT32 USB drive containing the complete contents of the mounted ISO. The following process erases the selected USB drive.

  1. Insert the USB flash drive. Back up anything on it.
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  3. Start DiskPart and display connected disks:
diskpart
list disk

Identify the USB by its size. Then run the following commands, replacing 1 with the actual USB disk number:

select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
exit

Warning: clean immediately removes the partition information from the selected disk. Selecting the wrong disk can destroy another drive’s data.

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the ISO and select Mount.
  2. Open the mounted DVD drive and copy every file and folder to the root of the USB drive.
  3. Safely eject the USB, connect it to the target device, and boot from it.

The boot-menu key depends on the manufacturer. Common keys include Esc, F10, and F12.

If a file is too large for FAT32

FAT32 cannot store a single file larger than 4 GB. If copying the ISO contents fails on install.wim, the problem may be this file-size limit rather than a bad ISO or insufficient USB capacity. Follow Microsoft’s USB installation guidance for the documented split-WIM or alternate media-preparation method.

Install the evaluation edition

Use a clean installation on a physical device, virtual machine, or USB-booted target. Back up files, application data, device settings, and recovery media first. Installing Windows can remove the existing recovery partition or make the previous installation impossible to restore without reinstalling it.

  1. Boot the device from the ISO or USB.
  2. Choose the language, time, currency, and keyboard options.
  3. Select Install now.
  4. Choose the installation option presented by Setup.
  5. Accept the license terms.
  6. Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
  7. Select the target disk and partition layout.
  8. Continue with Setup and allow the device to restart.

Be careful at the disk-selection screen. A clean installation removes the operating system and data on the partitions you select. The exact choices shown can vary with the device firmware and the ISO architecture.

Evaluation activation and expiration

The evaluation does not require a product key during installation. Microsoft warns that an unactivated or expired evaluation has noticeable restrictions:

  • The desktop background changes to black.
  • A persistent message says that Windows is not genuine.
  • The computer shuts down every hour.

The evaluation cannot be removed like an ordinary application. If it was installed over a device’s recovery setup, returning to the former operating system may require a clean installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activate a licensed installation

Licensed Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 deployments can use KMS or MAK activation. Your Volume License Administrator supplies the appropriate media and key.

To install a MAK key, open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Replace the placeholder with the organization’s MAK. Check the current license information:

slmgr /dli

Request activation:

slmgr /ato

Check activation expiration:

slmgr /xpr

For MAK activation, slmgr /xpr reports permanent activation. For KMS activation, it displays the current activation period; the device must periodically contact the organization’s KMS service to renew it.

Confirm the installed edition

In the graphical interface, open Settings > System > About and check the Edition field. It should identify the system as Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC.

You can also use DISM from an elevated terminal:

dism /online /get-currentedition

Or use PowerShell:

Get-WindowsEdition -Online

The licensed LTSC edition is reported as:

IoTEnterpriseS

Do not rely only on a WMI SKU value: the evaluation edition can report a different SKU from the licensed edition.

Updates and support lifecycle

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 receives monthly quality and security updates through Windows Update. It does not receive normal feature updates through Windows Update, which is the point of the long-term servicing model.

The release is based on Windows 11 24H2, build 26100, and is supported until October 10, 2034 under Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Moving from one IoT Enterprise LTSC release to a later one requires a new license; the 10-year support period does not automatically grant rights to the next LTSC version.

Common mistakes

Claim or mistake What is correct
“IoT Enterprise LTSC is free.” Only the evaluation is time-limited. Production use requires the appropriate license.
Using the evaluation ISO for an in-place upgrade Microsoft intends the evaluation for a replacement or clean installation.
Assuming LTSC receives no updates It receives monthly quality and security updates, but not normal feature updates.
Installing it on an ordinary personal PC to avoid feature updates The licensing model is for fixed-function specialized devices, not general-purpose computing.
Downloading only the x64 image for every device ARM64 hardware requires the separate ARM64 ISO.

FAQ

Is Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 ISO free?

Microsoft provides a free 90-day evaluation download after registration. A production installation requires the applicable OEM, Volume Licensing, or Visual Studio subscription entitlement.

Can I install the IoT Enterprise LTSC evaluation on my existing Windows PC?

You can test it on suitable hardware or in a virtual machine, but Microsoft does not intend the evaluation ISO for an in-place upgrade. Use a clean installation and back up your data first.

Which ISO should I download: x64 or ARM64?

Choose x64 or AMD64 for compatible Intel and AMD 64-bit processors. Choose ARM64 only for supported ARM64 hardware; it will not install on a standard x64 PC.

Does Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC receive updates?

Yes. It receives monthly quality and security updates. It does not receive normal feature updates through Windows Update during the LTSC lifecycle.

The Bottom Line

Download the evaluation ISO only from Microsoft’s Evaluation Center, select the architecture that matches the target hardware, and verify its SHA-256 hash before creating installation media. Treat the evaluation as a clean-install test image: it expires after 90 days and is not a free production license. For deployed fixed-function devices, obtain licensed media and activation through the correct Microsoft IoT or Volume Licensing channel.
