The safest first run in Don’t Starve Together is a planned team effort: gather materials before building, avoid unnecessary fights, cook in a crock pot, assign clear jobs, and prepare a revival option before anyone dies. Choose Survival for the standard challenge, or Endless/Wilderness if your group is still learning the basics.
Exact mechanics can change between patches. The timer and sanity figures below come from community-maintained references rather than confirmed Klei patch notes, so check the current game build before relying on a number.

Mode selection determines whether one mistake is a setback or the end of the world. Discuss it before creating the server so every player understands the consequence of a total wipe.

For a first serious co-op attempt, Endless is often the most practical compromise: you still learn the normal systems, but a poor first expedition does not automatically delete the world. Move to Survival once the group can communicate food, location and revival plans reliably.

Pick a character without chasing a mythical “easiest” choice
Character advice conflicts because “easy” depends on whether your group struggles with combat, hunger, exploration or sanity. Do not treat any one character as universally best.
Wilson: the neutral starting point
Wilson is commonly described as a flexible starter. He has no specialized role that forces a new player to learn an unusual system, making him a useful baseline while you learn gathering, crafting and seasonal preparation.

Wendy’s ghostly twin can make early combat more forgiving. She is a sensible choice when the team wants help dealing with hostile creatures while learning attack timing and positioning.
Other characters
Guides disagree about the most forgiving character: one source favors Wigfrid, while others point to Willow or Wendy. Use that disagreement as a decision guide rather than a contradiction to solve. Let the player choose a character whose mechanics they understand, and make sure at least one teammate can handle food, building and exploration rather than selecting an entire party around combat.

Your opening plan: gather first, build second
The first mistake new groups make is spending their opening time on a permanent base before they have enough materials to support it. Treat the first stretch as a reconnaissance and supply run.
- Collect essentials immediately. Pick up flint, twigs, grass and logs whenever you see them. These materials unlock basic tools, light and survival equipment.
- Secure rocks and gold before committing to a camp. A permanent base needs more than a campfire. Wait until the team has the materials required for the structures and tools it expects to use.
- Make temporary light and cooking arrangements. Do not let the search for an ideal base leave a player stranded in darkness. Keep the group close enough to share resources and call out hazards.
- Eat what the map gives you while learning. Berries and carrots are appropriate emergency food. They are not a reason to stop gathering ingredients for cooked meals.
- Skip avoidable fights. Early combat consumes health, time and food. Walk around threats until the team has equipment, a recovery plan and a reason to engage.
- Scout a defensible base location. Community guides suggest building near beefalo or pigs because they can provide protection. Weigh that benefit against the practical need for nearby resources and room to expand.
Assign one player to watch the group’s surroundings while others gather. A teammate who notices dusk, hostile creatures or a missing resource early can prevent a rescue mission later.

Food: turn a collection of ingredients into a team system
Hunger is a group problem. If one player hoards ingredients while another runs out of food, the team loses time and may be forced into a dangerous expedition. Announce what you are carrying and where edible supplies are stored.
Use the crock pot as soon as practical
Crock pots are efficient because recipes convert ordinary ingredients into meals with stronger survival value. Some recipes restore both hunger and sanity, which reduces the need to solve those problems separately. Learning four or five dependable recipes covers much of a new group’s routine cooking, according to community guides.

- Choose a small set of recipes everyone can recognize rather than relying on one player to remember every ingredient.
- Keep emergency raw food separate from the ingredients reserved for planned meals.
- Tell the team before taking stored food on an expedition, and replace what you consume when you return.
- Cook before a long trip or dangerous fight so a poor result does not leave the whole party hungry.
Protect the winter reserve
One co-op guide warns that a teammate eating the stored food before winter can become a serious problem. Mark the food intended for the season and agree on who may use it. A chest that is technically full is not a reserve if nobody knows which items are available for everyday eating.
Sanity management and the ghost problem
Sanity is not cosmetic. At very low sanity, shadow creatures appear and attack. One guide places that danger threshold below 15 percent, but the exact behavior is patch-dependent and should be checked in the current build.
Use cooked meals that restore sanity when possible, avoid needless exposure to frightening situations, and tell the team when a player is approaching a dangerous level. Do not leave a struggling teammate alone in a remote area simply because their hunger bar is full.
Ghosts also affect living players. A community wiki lists a drain of about 3.3 sanity points per minute for each ghost, while another guide gives a broader range of 3.3 to 10 points per minute per ghost. These are community estimates, not a universal guarantee across versions; the figures and their patch context are documented at dontstarve.wiki.gg. In practical terms, revive fallen teammates promptly and avoid allowing several ghosts to linger around a small living team.

Divide co-op jobs, but keep everyone cross-trained
Role assignment prevents four players from collecting the same resource while nobody prepares food or explores the map. A commonly suggested split is one builder, one farmer and one explorer, with the remaining player acting as a flexible support or combat partner.

Roles should be responsibilities, not permanent jobs. Every player should know how to make basic tools, find camp, light a fire and report their location. If the only cook disconnects, the rest of the team still needs a way to eat.
Revival: decide the plan before the first death
In a normal run, a dead player becomes a ghost. A ghost can revive themselves at a Touch Stone, Meat Effigy or Life Giving Amulet. A living teammate can also bring them back with a Telltale Heart.
Self-revival options
- Touch Stone: a ghost uses one that is available in the world.
- Meat Effigy: a prepared revival structure provides a planned fallback.
- Life Giving Amulet: a carried revival item can be used by the ghost.
Team revival
A living player can craft and use a Telltale Heart for a ghost. Revival costs the helper, so the group should discuss who is healthy enough to perform it and what food will restore the reviver afterward. Waiting until everyone is injured can turn one death into a total wipe.

A revived character returns with 50 health, hunger at two-thirds of maximum and sanity at half of maximum. Treat that player as vulnerable: provide food, escort them away from combat and let them recover before assigning another dangerous expedition.
Survival’s total-wipe rule
Survival starts its full-team death countdown only after every player is dead. If nobody revives a ghost during that window, the world is lost. This is why a revival plan belongs in the first-day conversation, not after a boss fight. One guide also warns that a group without a revival plan can lose a player permanently by about day 30; the exact timing is not a fixed promise across patches.

Winter punishes teams that treat food, sanity and revives as separate concerns. Begin preparation while ordinary gathering is still easy, rather than waiting for the first cold night.
Winter checklist
- Food: build a clearly labeled reserve and cook enough meals to cover travel as well as life at camp.
- Cooking: make sure more than one player knows the team’s core crock-pot recipes.
- Sanity: keep sanity-restoring foods available and avoid sending a low-sanity player on a solo trip.
- Revives: confirm where Touch Stones are, whether a Meat Effigy or Life Giving Amulet is available, and who can make a Telltale Heart.
- Roles: decide who stays near camp, who gathers and who escorts explorers so the team does not become scattered.
- Storage rules: separate everyday food from the winter reserve and agree that nobody eats the reserve without announcing it.
- Navigation: share routes and landmarks so a separated player can return instead of spending the dangerous part of the day searching.
There is no single universal winter timetable to memorize here: season length and balance can change with updates and world settings. Prepare for the conditions you can observe in your current world, and verify any exact seasonal number against current documentation.

A practical first-session checklist
- Select Endless or Relaxed if the group is unfamiliar with the game; choose Survival when everyone accepts the world-reset risk.
- Pick characters for complementary strengths rather than trying to identify one objectively easiest character.
- Gather flint, twigs, grass and logs before committing to a permanent base.
- Collect rocks and gold, then choose a camp location near useful resources and, where appropriate, beefalo or pigs for protection.
- Assign builder, food, explorer and support responsibilities, and tell everyone how to find camp.
- Learn several crock-pot recipes and keep a labeled food reserve.
- Locate or prepare at least one revival route before a dangerous expedition.
- Watch sanity as carefully as hunger, especially when teammates are ghosts.
- Before winter, audit food, cooking knowledge, storage rules and revival supplies as a group.
- Check current patch notes or an up-to-date community wiki before relying on exact timers, thresholds or penalty values.
