Short answer: Google Keep does not document offline speech-to-text for its ordinary voice notes. Keep documents recording, playback and deletion, and it can make stored files available offline, but that is different from processing speech on your phone. Google’s newer voice-generated-note feature is a separate, restricted Android feature. If you need documented offline transcription, use Android Live Transcribe with languages downloaded in advance, then copy the resulting text into Keep.

Does Google Keep transcribe voice notes without Wi-Fi?

No. Google’s standard Keep help documentation explains how to record, play and delete a voice note, but it does not promise that Keep converts the recording to text when the phone has no Wi-Fi or mobile data. A voice attachment that opens while you are offline should not be treated as proof that transcription happened locally.

Keep has two different concepts that are easy to confuse:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Offline file access: a previously stored note or attachment may remain available on the device without a connection.
  • Offline speech processing: the phone records audio and runs speech-to-text locally, without sending the audio to a server.

Google documents the first concept for Keep, not the second. Unless Google explicitly identifies a local transcription mode for your account, device and app version, assume a Keep voice note is an audio recording rather than an offline transcript.

What happens to an ordinary Keep voice note?

You can create the recording in a note, play it back and delete it. The standard voice-note documentation does not describe an automatic transcript, a downloadable language pack or a setting that switches transcription between cloud and device processing. If a transcript appears in your interface, check whether you are using a separate voice-generated-note feature rather than the basic recorder.

Is the newer voice-generated-note feature the same thing?

No. Google describes voice-generated notes as a newer feature with narrower availability. It is limited to Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra or Workspace Experiments, and it is available on Android. That entitlement and the feature’s availability do not establish that processing is offline. A feature can generate text while still using Google’s online services.

What is the difference between Keep’s offline access and offline transcription?

Offline access concerns where a copy of a file is available; offline transcription concerns where the speech-recognition computation occurs. Keep’s privacy information says that, when you access files offline, Google stores that information on the device. It also says uploaded voice-note audio is stored in Google data centers. Those statements can both be true: a device can hold a cached copy while the synchronized service stores and processes the account copy in Google’s infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a genuine offline workflow, all of the following need to be true:

  • The speech-recognition model is downloaded to the device.
  • The recording is processed without a network request.
  • The app states what happens when connectivity is disabled.
  • Any later synchronization is a separate step that you can identify.

Keep’s published information does not make those promises for its ordinary voice notes. Therefore, downloading or opening a Keep note before a flight does not prove that a transcript can be created after you enable airplane mode.

How private are Google Keep voice notes?

Keep’s privacy statements provide meaningful protections, but they do not describe Keep as an end-to-end encrypted, local-only recorder. Google says Keep content is private from other people unless you choose to share it or disclosure is legally required. It also says, “Keep does not use your information for advertising purposes.”

Where is the audio stored?

Google says uploaded voice-note audio is stored in Google data centers. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. If you use Keep files offline, Google says the offline information is stored on the device as well. Encryption in transit protects the connection between your device and Google; encryption at rest protects stored data. Neither statement means that only you hold the keys or that Google’s systems cannot process the content to provide Keep features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Google analyze the content?

Google says Keep processes content for product functions such as handwriting recognition and searching notes by category. This is a functional-use statement, not an advertising-use statement. The privacy language also says your content remains private from other people unless you share it or a legal requirement applies. Treat those as separate controls: advertising restrictions do not eliminate service-side processing.

What can other people see?

A note is private by default according to Google’s Keep privacy wording. Visibility changes when you use Keep’s sharing controls or otherwise provide access through your account. Anyone who can unlock your device or sign in to your Google account may also be able to access locally available notes, so device security and account security remain part of the privacy model.

Does Google Keep upload my voice recordings?

Google’s Keep privacy information says uploaded voice-note audio is stored in Google data centers. That means you should not assume a recording stays only on the phone after you save or synchronize it. Offline availability is an additional device copy or cache, not a guarantee that the cloud copy is absent.

If your requirement is “the audio must never leave this device,” Keep is not documented as meeting it. Use a recorder or transcription tool that explicitly states local-only processing, and verify that its backup or synchronization options are disabled. Keep can still be useful as the destination for text or for synchronized recordings when cloud storage is acceptable.

Can you use Google Keep voice notes on a plane?

You can generally view a previously synchronized Keep note while disconnected if the app has made the file available offline, but the documentation does not promise offline transcription. Before relying on a recording during travel, test the exact note and phone you will use.

  1. While connected, open Keep and open the note containing the voice attachment.
  2. Play the attachment once so the device has had an opportunity to cache it.
  3. Close and reopen Keep, then enable airplane mode.
  4. Open the same note and confirm that playback works without a connection.
  5. Do not assume that a transcript-generation control will work offline; test that separately if it appears.
  6. Any edits made while disconnected may need a connection before they synchronize to your other devices.

This test checks file access only. It cannot establish that speech-to-text runs locally, because an app may allow playback from a cached file while requiring a server for language processing.

How can you transcribe speech offline and save it in Keep?

Google’s documented offline transcription route is Android Live Transcribe, a separate accessibility feature. Google says select Android devices and all Pixel devices running Android 12 or later can download multiple languages, such as English and French, for offline use.

Set up the offline language before you lose connectivity

  1. Open your phone’s Settings and find Accessibility, then open Live Transcribe. Menu names can vary by manufacturer.
  2. In Live Transcribe’s language or offline-language settings, download the language you need while online. Wait for the download to finish; merely selecting a language without downloading it does not make it available offline.
  3. Disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data, or use airplane mode, and run a short test with the speaker you expect to use.
  4. Speak into Live Transcribe and confirm that text continues to appear. Background noise, accents and specialist vocabulary can reduce accuracy even when the model is operating locally.
  5. Copy the resulting text and paste it into a new Keep note when you want it synchronized with your notes.

Live Transcribe is not a hidden Keep mode. It is a separate Android tool, so the transcript and the original recording follow Live Transcribe’s behavior until you deliberately copy or save information in Keep.

Which phones support it?

Google’s wording covers all Pixel devices that run Android 12 or later and selected other Android devices. It does not say that every Android phone supports every offline language. Check the language-download option on the specific device before depending on it for travel, field work or accessibility use.

How does the restricted voice-generated-note feature affect availability?

The voice-generated-note feature should be evaluated separately from ordinary Keep recording. Google currently limits it to Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra or Workspace Experiments, and lists it for Android. A user without one of those eligibility paths may see only the standard recorder.

Even for an eligible account, availability does not answer the privacy question by itself. The published availability information does not state that generated notes are created entirely on-device or that their audio never reaches Google servers. If local processing is a requirement, use a tool with an explicit offline statement rather than inferring it from the feature name.

Can you recover the original audio from Keep?

Yes. Google says Keep exports voice recordings as note attachments. You can use Google Takeout to export your Keep data and retrieve the original audio attachment, rather than relying only on a displayed transcript or a copy made by another app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exporting is useful when you need an archive, want to move recordings to another system or need to verify what was actually captured. It does not change where the recording was stored while the note was synchronized, and it does not turn a cloud-synchronized recording into a local-only file.

Does turning off Google audio history make Keep recordings local-only?

No. Google’s Web & App Activity voice-and-audio setting concerns recordings made through Assistant. Disabling it prevents future Assistant recordings from being saved to Google servers through that setting, but previously saved audio is not automatically deleted. The control should not be presented as a switch for Keep voice-note attachments, which are governed by Keep’s own storage and privacy behavior.

Which option fits your privacy and offline needs?

Need Best-supported approach What the documentation establishes
Record and synchronize audio notes Standard Google Keep voice notes Recording, playback and deletion are documented; offline transcription is not.
View a previously saved note without connectivity Keep offline access Offline information may be stored on the device; this does not prove local speech processing.

What should you check before trusting Keep for sensitive recordings?

  • Confirm whether you are recording a standard voice attachment or using the restricted generated-note feature.
  • Decide whether cloud storage is acceptable; Google says uploaded audio is stored in its data centers.
  • Use a strong screen lock and Google account security because offline copies can be present on the device.
  • Test airplane-mode playback before travel, and do not confuse playback with transcription.
  • Download Live Transcribe languages in advance if offline text is essential.
  • Export important recordings through Google Takeout so the original audio exists outside a single Keep note.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Keep note made offline sync when I reconnect?

A Keep item that was available offline can generally synchronize after connectivity returns, but the exact behavior depends on whether the note and attachment were fully cached and whether your account is allowed to sync. Check for the sync status after reconnecting instead of assuming an offline edit has already reached other devices.

Is Google Keep end-to-end encrypted?

The cited Keep privacy information says data is encrypted in transit and at rest. It does not describe end-to-end encryption in which only the user controls decryption keys, so do not represent Keep voice notes as end-to-end encrypted.

Can I use offline Live Transcribe on an iPhone?

The documented offline-language support described here is for select Android devices and all Pixel devices running Android 12 or later. The cited information does not establish an equivalent offline Live Transcribe path for iPhone.

Does deleting a Keep note remove every exported copy?

No deletion guarantee is stated for copies you have already exported with Google Takeout or saved elsewhere. Treat exported audio as a separate copy that must be managed independently.
