Yes—if they teach reasoning rather than merely display a final answer. AI systems can generate correct solutions for many bounded algorithm problems, but their reliability changes with the model, language, difficulty, training exposure and test method. More importantly, producing code quickly is not the same as being able to explain, adapt, debug or reproduce it. The strongest coding tutorials now show how to decompose a problem, choose among trade-offs, test edge cases and critique generated code. That makes them useful both to learners who use AI and to engineers who must work without it during an interview, review or production incident.

Can AI solve LeetCode problems?

It can solve many of them, but “AI solves LeetCode in seconds” is a provocative summary, not a universal measurement of every current model or problem. Results depend on what was tested, when the problem entered the model’s training data, the programming language, the difficulty and whether a person is allowed to repair the first answer.

The most directly relevant published study is by Manuel Merkel and Jens Döringhaus in Empirical Software Engineering (2026). They randomly selected 728 LeetCode algorithm problems and asked ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) for solutions in C, C++, Java, Python and JavaScript. Problems presumed to be within the model’s training data had a reported success rate of 68.41%; problems published after the presumed cutoff had a 20.27% success rate. A multi-round fixing process turned 31% of initially incorrect submitted solutions into functional ones.

Those figures describe that model, sample, categorization and evaluation—not today’s platform-wide accuracy. The study also does not establish that a solution appeared instantly: it measured submitted-code outcomes, not a universal solve-time benchmark. A newer model may perform differently, and a familiar problem can be easier for a model than a novel variation with the same underlying technique.

Why the problem’s age matters

Training exposure can make a known problem look like reasoning when the model is recalling a pattern or a previously seen solution. A post-cutoff problem is a cleaner test of generalization, although publication date is only a proxy for what the model has seen. Tutorials remain valuable because they can expose the invariant, proof idea and decision process that a memorized answer hides.

Why language and difficulty change the result

The 2026 PROBE paper evaluates code generation across five languages and a range of problem difficulty. It reports that correctness and closeness to a valid solution decline as difficulty rises, with differences by language and model size. A tutorial that explains why a technique transfers across languages therefore offers something a single generated snippet cannot guarantee.

Why is a fast solution different from durable learning?

A generated program can pass the visible tests while the person who requested it remains unable to derive the algorithm, identify its assumptions or repair it when the specification changes. Learning evidence points to that distinction, while also showing that the effect depends on how assistance is used.

In a January 2026 randomized controlled trial, Anthropic recruited 52 mostly junior software engineers who knew Python but not the Trio library. One group used AI assistance and another hand-coded the exercise. The AI-assisted group averaged 50% on a follow-up quiz, compared with 67% for the hand-coding group. The assisted group finished about two minutes sooner on average, but that time difference was not statistically significant.

This was a small study of one unfamiliar library and one learning task; it does not prove that every use of AI damages learning. It does show why a tutorial should include moments when the learner predicts behavior, writes a plan, tests a hypothesis and explains the result before seeing generated code.

What the quiz result does—and does not—tell writers

  • It supports separating immediate task completion from later recall and transfer.
  • It does not measure LeetCode performance, every AI tool or experienced developers in every setting.
  • It suggests that an assistant can reduce productive struggle if the learner accepts code without reconstructing the reasoning.
  • It leaves room for guided use, such as requesting hints, counterexamples or critique instead of a complete solution.

Does workplace productivity make coding tutorials obsolete?

No. Productivity and education are different outcomes, and the available workplace evidence does not test whether publishing tutorials has value.

A June 2025 Microsoft Research report combined three field experiments involving 4,867 developers. It reported a 26.08% increase in completed tasks for developers using an AI coding assistant, with a standard error of 10.3%. The report also said less-experienced developers had higher adoption and larger productivity gains. The settings, tasks and measurement window were company-specific, so the result cannot be converted into a claim that learners no longer need instruction.

Real-world engineering remains harder than a self-contained algorithm prompt. OpenAI’s 2025 SWE-Lancer report describes a benchmark of more than 1,400 freelance software-engineering tasks with an aggregate value of $1 million and says frontier models were still unable to solve a majority of the tasks. That is an organization-reported benchmark result, not an independent universal estimate, but it illustrates the gap between a constrained puzzle and work involving ambiguous requirements, repositories, tests, coordination and maintenance.

Tutorials help bridge that gap when they teach the habits behind reliable work: clarifying requirements, reading an unfamiliar codebase, selecting tests, interpreting failures and communicating trade-offs. A productivity gain can make those habits more important because a faster first draft increases the volume of code that must be reviewed.

What should a modern LeetCode tutorial teach?

The tutorial’s durable value is the reasoning a reader can reuse on a new problem. Organize each lesson around decisions and evidence, not around a polished answer alone.

1. Turn the prompt into a precise model

State the input, output, constraints and whether duplicates, ordering, empty input or negative values are allowed. Ask the reader to restate the task and identify what must remain true after each operation. This prevents a plausible implementation from solving a subtly different problem.

2. Show the baseline before the optimization

Derive a straightforward approach first, then measure its time and space complexity against the stated limits. Explain exactly which repeated work makes it too slow and what information an improved method stores to avoid that work. A reader who understands the failed baseline can recognize the same pattern elsewhere.

3. Make the invariant visible

For a sliding window, define what the window represents and when it is valid. For a heap, state what the top element guarantees. For dynamic programming, define the meaning of each state and the transition that fills it. Include a small trace so the reader can check the invariant after every meaningful step.

4. Compare legitimate alternatives

Explain when sorting plus two pointers is preferable to hashing, when breadth-first search is clearer than a specialized shortcut, or when a slightly slower method is safer under memory limits. Use the constraints to justify the choice rather than presenting one technique as universally best.

5. Treat edge cases as design tests

List cases such as an empty collection, one element, all values equal, already sorted input, maximum allowed size, duplicate keys and integer overflow boundaries when relevant. For each, say what the algorithm should do and why. This is more instructive than adding a generic warning to “test edge cases.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Include debugging and verification

Show a deliberately flawed version or a likely generated mistake, then demonstrate how a failing test narrows the cause. Add assertions, a brute-force oracle for small inputs or property-based checks where appropriate. Readers learn to distrust plausible output until it has evidence behind it.

7. Require independent reconstruction

After the explanation, give a nearby variation with one changed constraint and ask the reader to adapt the method before revealing a hint. The ability to transfer the idea is a stronger learning target than copying the original code.

How can I use AI without outsourcing my learning?

  1. Attempt a written plan first. Record the data structure, invariant, expected complexity and two edge cases before asking for code.
  2. Request a hint, not a solution. Ask for the next question to consider or a counterexample to your plan. If you do request code, ask for a small, explainable fragment.
  3. Predict the output and failure modes. Run your own trace on a normal case and an adversarial case before executing the generated program.
  4. Verify independently. Compare the implementation with the constraints, inspect every loop boundary and test it against a simple brute-force version on random small inputs.
  5. Explain it without the assistant. Close the tool and write the invariant, proof sketch and complexity from memory. Gaps here identify what to study.
  6. Modify the specification. Change a constraint, return requirement or input condition, then update the algorithm yourself. Only afterward ask for critique.
  7. Keep an error log. Save the test that failed, the mistaken assumption and the fix. Patterns in that log are more useful than a collection of accepted snippets.

This workflow also gives a tutorial a concrete role: it supplies the questions, traces and verification tasks that an unstructured chat session often skips.

How should readers compare an AI answer with a tutorial?

Judge both against the outcome you need. A passing submission is necessary for an algorithm problem, but it is not sufficient evidence that the learner can use the idea again.

Criterion What to check in an AI-generated answer What a strong tutorial adds
Correctness under constraints Does it pass the stated limits and return the required format? Derives the complexity and explains why the limits permit it.
Edge-case coverage Does it handle empty, duplicate, boundary and adversarial inputs? Names those cases and turns them into tests.
Reasoning Is the explanation consistent with what the code actually does? Defines the invariant, proof idea and decision points before code.
Debugging Can a failure be isolated and repaired without guessing? Shows diagnostic steps, assertions or a reference implementation.
Transfer Can the method survive a changed constraint or related problem? Provides a variation and asks the learner to adapt independently.
Reproducibility Can the reader recreate the solution without another prompt? Uses retrieval questions, traces and a concise recap of the mental model.

These are practical editorial criteria, not a validated universal scoring system. They reflect the issues raised by the LeetCode, learning and code-generation studies: functional correctness, difficulty, debugging and mastery.

Is writing coding tutorials still worth it for different audiences?

Yes, but the value proposition changes by audience. Beginners need a path through concepts and feedback; interview candidates need deliberate practice under constraints; working developers need methods for reviewing and adapting generated code.

For beginners

Reduce cognitive load with a small vocabulary, visual traces and exercises that isolate one idea at a time. Explain why a data structure exists before asking for a complete implementation. Avoid letting an assistant fill every blank, because early retrieval is where misconceptions become visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For interview candidates

Model the conversation as well as the algorithm: clarify assumptions, state a baseline, discuss complexity, test aloud and respond to a changed requirement. Include timed attempts only after the method is understood; speed without a reliable process can conceal fragile knowledge.

For professional developers

Connect algorithmic patterns to code review, incident debugging and maintenance. Show how to inspect generated diffs, add regression tests and challenge an apparently efficient solution whose memory use or concurrency behavior is unsafe. This audience may use AI heavily and still need a framework for accepting or rejecting its output.

Can tutorials support paid products or books?

A category-level algorithms and data-structures book is a plausible companion for readers who want a structured sequence alongside online lessons. The available evidence establishes interest in algorithm practice and coding education, but it does not establish the sales, price or current availability of any particular title. A writer should verify a specific edition and listing at publication time and match it to the reader’s level and goal.

The same principle applies to a paid tutorial: charge for structure, feedback, depth, worked variations and a dependable practice system—not for a code block that a reader can request elsewhere. Be explicit about what is included, how exercises are reviewed and whether examples target a particular language or interview format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should tutorial writers stop doing?

  • Do not present a model-specific success rate as a permanent score for all AI systems.
  • Do not equate an accepted submission with understanding or interview readiness.
  • Do not hide constraints, omitted edge cases or language-specific behavior behind a polished explanation.
  • Do not ask readers to trust generated tests without checking the oracle and boundary conditions.
  • Do not pad a lesson with several nearly identical solutions; use the space to show a decision, failure and transfer exercise.
  • Do not promise that AI assistance always harms or always improves learning. The small randomized trial found a short-term mastery difference in one setting, while workplace experiments measured productivity in others.

The durable editorial opportunity is the layer between a prompt and a dependable result: problem framing, evidence, explanation and adaptation. AI can shorten the path to a first draft; a good tutorial teaches readers how to decide whether that draft deserves to survive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should beginners avoid AI until they can code unaided?

A complete ban is unnecessary, but delaying full-solution prompts is useful. Have beginners write a plan, predict a test result and request hints first; this preserves practice in the skills they are trying to build while still giving them feedback when they are stuck.

How can an interviewer tell whether a candidate understands an AI-assisted solution?

Ask the candidate to change one constraint, estimate resource use on a larger input and diagnose a failing test. Someone who understands the method can update the invariant and explain the trade-off, rather than merely repeating the generated code.

What makes a LeetCode tutorial useful across programming languages?

Put the language-independent idea—state definition, invariant, transition and complexity—before syntax. Then call out differences such as integer behavior, library ordering guarantees or idiomatic container operations that can change correctness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can a tutorial measure whether readers learned instead of copied?

Use a delayed variation rather than an immediate duplicate. Ask readers to solve it without the original code, explain their choices, and submit a test that would distinguish their approach from a tempting but incorrect alternative.
