Yes. Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar said in a CBS News interview that “so many AI researchers have started smoking” to signal their belief in AI, then added, “I believe so much in AI that it’s going to cure cancer.” The interview transcript records what Sankar said; it does not verify the smoking anecdote or show that AI will cure cancer.
What Sankar said
Sankar made the remarks during an October 11, 2026 appearance on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan. Discussing what he characterized as a social delusion around AI, he said: “Like, for example, so many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI.”

Does the interview prove researchers are smoking to signal their belief in AI?
No. The transcript documents Sankar’s characterization, but it does not provide independent evidence that researchers have adopted smoking as a signal of their confidence in AI. It gives no supporting examples or count. The claim should therefore be attributed to Sankar, not repeated as an established trend among AI researchers.

Does the interview show that AI will cure cancer?

That public-health evidence concerns smoking’s risks; it does not support Sankar’s anecdote about AI researchers or evaluate AI’s ability to treat cancer.
