For a newcomer who wants one clear starting lane, the current DCU is probably easier to begin; for someone who wants an explicit map through a large shared film-and-TV universe, the MCU is easier to navigate. That is a practical judgment based on each franchise’s continuity boundaries and watch-order guides—not a measured difficulty score. “DC” includes several separate screen continuities, so neither answer applies to every DC movie or show.
At a glance: which franchise is easier?
| What you want | Easier fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A current, bounded starting point | DCU | DC identifies the new Superman (2025), starring David Corenswet, as an introduction to the new DCU; older Superman films belong to other continuities. |
| A mapped route through a large shared universe | MCU | A current guide offers both chronological and release-date orders for MCU films, Disney+ series and special presentations. |
| To watch every screen story under one brand | Neither is simple | DC stories span disconnected continuities, while the MCU’s cross-media scope adds films, series and specials to track. |
Why “DC” does not mean one watch order
DC’s screen history is divided into distinct lanes rather than one required sequence. DC’s own guide to Superman’s live-action films distinguishes the Donnerverse, the DCEU and the new DCU. It places Henry Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU and David Corenswet’s in the new DCU. Watching one version is not a prerequisite for understanding the other.
The distinction also applies beyond Superman. The DCEU is an older shared continuity; the newer DCU is a separate one; and projects such as Joker and The Batman are outside the shared DCU. In DC’s January 31, 2023 announcement, DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran described the plan as focusing on one universe within a multiverse and said the studio would make clear when a project was not DCU. That was the studio’s announced approach at the time, not a guarantee that every future boundary will remain unchanged.

A clean entry: the current DCU
If your goal is to start with the present shared DCU, DC’s 2025 guide points to Superman (2025) as a way into the character and wider universe. You do not need to watch earlier Superman films first: they belong to other screen continuities. This makes the current DCU a relatively contained entry lane, even though the broader DC brand is not one continuity.

A separate route: the DCEU
If you specifically want the DCEU, follow a DCEU-only order rather than combining it with DCU or standalone films. Rotten Tomatoes’ DCEU chronology guide, updated June 25, 2026, starts with Wonder Woman (set in 1918) and then Wonder Woman 1984; it says the remaining chronology broadly follows release order. The guide also treats Zack Snyder’s Justice League as an optional, non-canon alternative to Justice League. That is an example of choices within one DC lane, not a reason to include every DC film in a single list.
Why the MCU is easier to map
The MCU has a more unified shared-universe map, and its viewing order is explicitly laid out in two ways. Rotten Tomatoes’ MCU watch guide, updated September 21, 2026, covers films, Disney+ shows and special presentations, with both chronological and release-date lists. Choose one order and stay with it; you do not need to watch the same story twice.

Release order or chronological order?
Release order follows how audiences first encountered the theatrical MCU. Iron Man launched it in theaters in 2008. Chronological order follows the story’s internal timeline instead: the guide lists Captain America: The First Avenger as the earliest-set MCU film. The two routes differ because stories released later can be set earlier in the fictional timeline.

Choose chronological order if you prefer events arranged by in-universe time. The guide makes either route accessible; its broad film-and-series scope is most useful if you want a completionist path, rather than only a selection of movies.

How to choose a starting path
- Want one current DC entry? Start with Superman (2025) as the new DCU introduction. Treat older DC films as separate options, not required setup.
- Want the MCU’s original introduction? Use the release-date order in the Rotten Tomatoes MCU guide, beginning with Iron Man.
- Want MCU events in story-time order? Use that guide’s chronological list, which begins with Captain America: The First Avenger.
- Want the older DC shared universe? Select the DCEU guide and follow its chronology; do not mix it with the new DCU order.
- Want a broad survey rather than completion? Pick a continuity first, then watch the films or series that interest you. Neither brand requires treating every project as one mandatory marathon.
Verdict: easier to start or easier to track?
The current DCU is easier to start if you want one bounded lane and a recent entry point. The MCU is easier to map if you want a large shared-universe watchlist, because its guide presents chronological and release-order paths across movies, series and specials. “DC is harder” is fair only when talking about the whole range of DC screen continuities—not someone who chooses the current DCU and follows its own lane. Neither franchise has an established objective difficulty score for new viewers.
