The DC Animated Universe timeline begins with Batman: The Animated Series (1992), continues through eight interconnected TV series and four core films, and ends with Batman Beyond, Return of the Joker and Justice League Unlimited’s “Epilogue.” Watch the optional 2017 and 2019 films afterward because their canon status is disputed.

The DCAU is easiest to follow in a mostly release-based order, with one important future-era adjustment: keep “Epilogue” until every other core story is finished. The order below separates core continuity from later films that are stylistically connected but not universally accepted as canon.

Key takeaways

  • The core DC Animated Universe begins with Batman: The Animated Series (1992) and contains eight television series plus four feature-length films.
  • The best first-time viewing order is largely release-based, but Batman Beyond belongs at the end of the present-day storyline because it is set decades in the future.
  • The New Batman Adventures is a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series, not a reboot, despite its redesigned character models.
  • Watch Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue” last because the episode reveals the connection between Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne.
  • Batman and Harley Quinn and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five are best treated as optional, DCAU-adjacent films rather than unquestioned core canon.

What is the DC Animated Universe?

The DC Animated Universe, usually abbreviated DCAU, is the fan-used name for the interconnected animated continuity that began with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. The core continuity includes eight television series and four feature-length films, although DC’s current material sometimes uses “DCAU” more broadly for later productions connected by style, characters or returning performers.

The core television shows are Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995), Superman: The Animated Series (1996–2000), The New Batman Adventures (1997–1999), Batman Beyond (1999–2001), Static Shock (2000–2004), The Zeta Project (2001–2002), Justice League (2001–2004) and Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006). DC’s overview of the Bruce Timm-produced continuity provides the modern distinction between the original shared universe and later animated movie universes.

Batman: The Animated Series is the starting point because it establishes the versions of Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn, Robin, Batgirl and Gotham City that later productions develop. The episodes sometimes marketed as The Adventures of Batman & Robin remain part of the complete series.

What is the best DC Animated Universe watch order?

The best first-time DC Animated Universe watch order follows the major introductions and crossovers without requiring constant switching between series. Watch the complete series listed in each step unless an episode exception is specified.

# Series or film Release period How to watch it
1 Batman: The Animated Series 1992–1995 Watch the complete series, including episodes marketed as The Adventures of Batman & Robin.
2 Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 1993 Watch after completing Batman: The Animated Series.
3 Superman: The Animated Series 1996–2000 Watch the complete series, including the three-part “World’s Finest” crossover.
4 The New Batman Adventures 1997–1999 Watch after Batman: The Animated Series; the redesign is not a continuity reset.
5 Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero 1998 Watch after The New Batman Adventures.
6 Static Shock 2000–2004 Watch the complete four-season series.
7 Justice League 2001–2004 Watch both seasons in episode order, including “Starcrossed.”
8 The Zeta Project 2001–2002 Watch after Batman Beyond or after Justice League; its placement is flexible.
9 Justice League Unlimited 2004–2006 Watch in episode order, but save “Epilogue” until the end.
10 Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman 2003 Watch after The New Batman Adventures and before the end of the Justice League era.
11 Batman Beyond 1999–2001 For the cleanest first viewing, watch after the present-day Justice League Unlimited episodes.
12 Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker 2000 Watch after completing Batman Beyond.
13 Justice League Unlimited, “Epilogue” 2005 Watch last among the core entries.
14 Batman and Harley Quinn 2017 Optional epilogue; continuity status is disputed.
15 Justice League vs. the Fatal Five 2019 Optional DCAU-adjacent film; watch after “Epilogue.”

Why should you start with Batman: The Animated Series?

Batman: The Animated Series is the foundation of the DC Animated Universe because later shows build on its characters, Gotham setting and character history. Watch the complete series before Mask of the Phantasm; the film includes substantial flashbacks to Bruce Wayne’s early years, but those flashbacks do not make the film a prequel that belongs before the series.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was spun out of the series and uses the same creative team and principal voice cast. DC’s background on the film describes its place as a feature-length expansion of the animated Batman continuity.

DC’s feature-length history of Mask of the Phantasm supports placing the film after the beginning of the Batman series rather than treating its flashbacks as the viewing order.

How do Superman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures fit together?

Superman: The Animated Series expands the shared continuity from Gotham to Metropolis and establishes the DCAU versions of Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Supergirl and Darkseid. Watch the complete series after Batman: The Animated Series. The three-part “World’s Finest” story is part of Superman: The Animated Series, not an additional feature-length DCAU movie.

DC identifies Superman: The Animated Series as a production from the same creative team responsible for Batman: The Animated Series. The show ran from 1996 to 2000, overlapping with The New Batman Adventures.

The New Batman Adventures is a direct continuation of Batman: The Animated Series. The sharper character designs mark a new production phase, not a reboot. The later series emphasizes an older Bat-family and gives more attention to Batgirl, Nightwing, Tim Drake’s Robin and Gotham’s wider supporting cast. DC’s history of the Batman animated production explains why the two series look different while remaining connected.

Where do the Batman animated movies go?

The four core DCAU feature films fit into the television continuity as follows:

Film Release year Recommended placement Continuity note
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 1993 After Batman: The Animated Series A Batman-era story with early-life flashbacks.
Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero 1998 After The New Batman Adventures One of the original feature films set within the animated-series continuity.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker 2000 After the complete Batman Beyond series A future-era story involving Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake and the Joker.
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman 2003 After The New Batman Adventures, before the end of the Justice League era It is largely self-contained and can move within this part of the order.

DC’s current Batman animated-movie guide lists these four films with the DCAU’s animated-series continuity. Mystery of the Batwoman does not depend heavily on the Justice League storyline, so watching the film anywhere after The New Batman Adventures does not create a major continuity problem.

When should you watch Static Shock?

Watch the complete four-season Static Shock series after Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and before Justice League. Static Shock was initially presented as a separate show, but later crossover stories connect Static with Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, the Justice League and characters from Batman Beyond.

DC identifies Static Shock as a four-season production that ran from 2000 to 2004. The series can be watched independently, but placing it before Justice League lets its later connections arrive in a natural progression.

How should you watch Justice League and Justice League Unlimited?

Watch both seasons of Justice League in episode order, then watch Justice League Unlimited in episode order. Justice League brings together Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter, while Justice League Unlimited expands the roster beyond the original seven members.

The three-part Justice League finale “Starcrossed” is sometimes sold as Justice League: Star Crossed or Justice League: Starcrossed the Movie. The different packaging does not make “Starcrossed” a separate movie or continuity entry. DC lists it as the television series’ three-part finale.

The Zeta Project can be watched after Batman Beyond or after Justice League. The show is a relatively self-contained spin-off from Batman Beyond and occupies the same future-oriented branch of the DCAU, so viewers do not need to interrupt the main present-day storyline to place it precisely.

Watch Justice League Unlimited before moving to the final future-era stories, but do not watch “Epilogue” until the end. The regular episodes continue the present-day storyline and introduce the expanded League roster. DC lists Justice League Unlimited as running from 2004 to 2006.

Why should “Epilogue” be watched last?

“Epilogue” should be watched last because the Justice League Unlimited episode functions as the conclusion to the Terry McGinnis storyline. The episode’s main story takes place in the future and reveals important information about Terry’s origins and his relationship with Bruce Wayne.

Batman Beyond follows Terry McGinnis as the future Batman under Bruce Wayne’s mentorship. DC describes the series as a future-set continuation connected to the Justice League Unlimited era. Watch the complete series before Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker; then watch “Epilogue” after the film.

For a strict in-universe timeline, Batman Beyond follows the present-day events of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. For a first-time viewer, watching Batman Beyond earlier is also reasonable because the series originally released before the final seasons of Justice League Unlimited. The non-negotiable spoiler rule is to save “Epilogue” until after Batman Beyond.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DC’s Batman Beyond listing identifies the series as running from 1999 to 2001, while Return of the Joker is identified as the first feature-length Batman Beyond movie. The film revisits unresolved history involving Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake and the Joker; its flashbacks should not move the entire film earlier in the order.

Are Batman and Harley Quinn and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five part of the DCAU?

Batman and Harley Quinn and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five are best treated as optional DCAU-adjacent films. Both use the visual language or performers associated with the Bruce Timm-era productions, but their exact continuity status is disputed.

Rank #4

Batman and Harley Quinn was designed as a continuation of the Bruce Timm-era animated style and brings back DCAU voice performers. DC’s 2025 Batman guide places the movie in a DCAU section, while DC’s Bruce Timm overview questions its continuity relevance and excludes it from the colloquially understood core DCAU. Watch it as an optional epilogue after Justice League Unlimited.

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five reunites principal Justice League Unlimited voice performers, and Bruce Timm served as producer. DC’s film page documents the returning cast and production connection, but the film is safer to describe as DCAU-adjacent than as an unambiguous core entry. Watch it after “Epilogue.” See DC’s film listing for Justice League vs. the Fatal Five.

What is not part of this DC Animated Universe?

Not every DC animated movie belongs to the DCAU. The later DC Animated Movie Universe, commonly called the DCAMU, is a separate continuity that begins with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox in 2013 and ends with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War in 2020.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse form their own continuity. Kevin Conroy’s Batman voice and Tim Daly’s Superman voice do not make those films continuations of Batman: The Animated Series or Superman: The Animated Series.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Justice League: Doom are also a separate two-film continuity. Shared voice actors are not sufficient evidence that an animated film belongs to the DCAU. DC’s guide to Superman’s animated movies explains these continuity distinctions.

DC’s Superman animated-movie guide separates Public Enemies, Apocalypse, Crisis on Two Earths and Doom from the original DCAU continuity.

Which similarly named releases should you avoid counting twice?

Batman Beyond: The Movie is a home-video compilation of the first two Batman Beyond episodes, not a separate original DCAU feature. Watch those opening episodes as part of Batman Beyond without adding another movie to the checklist.

Best Value

The Batman/Superman Movie: World’s Finest is a repackaging of the three-part “World’s Finest” crossover from Superman: The Animated Series. Watch “World’s Finest” within the Superman series rather than counting the compilation as an additional DCAU story.

Justice League: Star Crossed and Justice League: Starcrossed the Movie likewise refer to the three-part Justice League finale. The alternate titles and packaging do not create another entry.

Complete practical order at a glance

  1. Batman: The Animated Series
  2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
  3. Superman: The Animated Series
  4. The New Batman Adventures
  5. Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
  6. Static Shock
  7. Justice League
  8. The Zeta Project
  9. Justice League Unlimited, excluding “Epilogue”
  10. Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
  11. Batman Beyond
  12. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
  13. Justice League Unlimited — “Epilogue”
  14. Batman and Harley Quinn — optional and disputed
  15. Justice League vs. the Fatal Five — optional and DCAU-adjacent

This order prioritizes a spoiler-safe first viewing. Viewers who prefer strict chronology can place Batman Beyond after the present-day Justice League Unlimited episodes, keep The Zeta Project after Batman Beyond, and still end with Return of the Joker followed by “Epilogue.”
