Database replication and backups protect against different failures. Replication keeps another server close to the current database so it can take over after a server failure; backups preserve data that can be restored, including to an earlier point in time when the necessary logs are available. Replication can reduce downtime, but it is not a historical backup. For systems where both data recovery and service continuity matter, use both.
Replication and backups at a glance
| Question | Replication or standby | Backup and restore |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Keep a second server tracking changes so it can take over; a hot standby may also serve read-only queries. | Retain data from which a database can be restored. |
| Typical use | Resume service after a primary-server failure, depending on replication lag, mode, and failover setup. | Recover lost data or restore a historical state when the backup and required log history are available. |
| Recent changes | With asynchronous replication, changes not yet sent to the standby can be lost if the primary fails. | Recovery depends on the backup and retained log sequence reaching the desired recovery point. |
| Historical rollback | A standby follows the primary’s changes; it does not, by itself, retain earlier database states. | Point-in-time recovery can stop log replay at a selected point covered by the archive. |
| Operational requirement | Failure detection, promotion, and protection against two active primaries must be handled by the failover design. | Configuration files and other system dependencies may need separate protection. |
PostgreSQL 18 documents SQL dumps, file-system-level backups, and continuous archiving as backup approaches. These are PostgreSQL-specific examples; other database engines and managed services may use different terms and guarantees. PostgreSQL 18: Backup and Restore
What replication protects against
Replication is principally an availability measure. A standby receives database changes from the primary. If the primary server fails, a prepared standby can be activated to resume service. PostgreSQL describes warm standbys that read WAL from the primary or an archive, and hot standbys that can also accept read-only queries while in recovery. PostgreSQL 18: Warm Standby
Activating a prepared standby can restore service sooner than rebuilding a server from an archived base backup and replaying logs. That does not make replication a substitute for backups: a standby follows the primary’s change stream rather than preserving a chosen older state.

Asynchronous replication can lose recent changes
With asynchronous shipping, a transaction can be committed on the primary before its change has reached the standby. If the primary fails during that interval, the standby may lack the newest changes. The size of this exposure depends on replication delay; streaming replication can make the delay smaller, but does not turn asynchronous replication into a guarantee that every acknowledged change is already on the standby. PostgreSQL 18: Warm Standby
Synchronous replication trades waiting for stronger acknowledgement protection
In PostgreSQL synchronous replication, selected transactions wait for replies from the configured synchronous standbys. This can strengthen protection against losing acknowledged transactions under that configuration, but commits may take longer and behavior depends on the selected settings and failure conditions. There is no single data-loss guarantee for “replication” in general: identify whether the setup is synchronous or asynchronous and how failover is managed. PostgreSQL 18: Warm Standby

A standby does not perform failover coordination on its own
Having a standby does not, by itself, detect that the primary has failed or safely promote the standby. PostgreSQL does not supply the system software that detects primary failure and notifies a standby. A failover design must also ensure that the former primary cannot continue accepting writes as a separate primary; two servers acting independently as primary can cause confusion and data loss. After promotion, the standby is the operating server until redundancy is restored by preparing another standby. PostgreSQL 18: Warm Standby
What backups protect against
Backups provide recoverable data states. They are the appropriate path when data has been deleted or changed unintentionally, or when recovery must return the database to an earlier point rather than simply continue from the latest replicated state.

For PostgreSQL continuous archiving, the restore process starts with a base backup and replays archived write-ahead log (WAL) files to bring the database forward. Recovery can stop at a chosen point covered by the archive. PostgreSQL requires a continuous sequence of archived WAL files reaching back at least to the start of the base backup; missing log history can prevent recovery to the intended point. PostgreSQL 18: Continuous Archiving and Point-in-Time Recovery
That restore path is different from activating a prepared standby: restoring a server from an archived base backup and rolling it forward takes considerably longer, so PostgreSQL characterizes it as a disaster-recovery approach rather than a high-availability substitute. PostgreSQL 18: Warm Standby

Database files are not the whole recovery plan
PostgreSQL WAL recovery does not restore manually edited configuration files. Protect files such as postgresql.conf, pg_hba.conf, and pg_ident.conf separately, along with any other system dependencies required to bring the service back. PostgreSQL 18: Continuous Archiving and Point-in-Time Recovery
How to choose a recovery design
Choose based on the interruption you need to withstand and the recovery point you can accept. In PostgreSQL, as in any database, the exact guarantees depend on the engine and configuration.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Recovery time: How quickly must the service accept traffic again? A prepared standby can resume sooner than restoring a base backup and replaying archived logs.
- Acceptable data loss: How far behind can the standby be? Asynchronous replication exposes changes that have not shipped; synchronous confirmation changes commit behavior and has latency implications.
- Historical recovery: Which earlier points must be recoverable? Confirm that backups and the full required WAL sequence are retained and accessible through the intended recovery target.
- Archive independence: Can the required backup and WAL history be accessed if the primary is unavailable?
- Failover safety: Decide who detects failure, promotes the standby, prevents the old primary from accepting independent writes, and rebuilds redundancy afterward.
- Recovery scope: Identify configuration files and other dependencies that are outside the database’s WAL recovery process.
Why a reliable setup uses both
Replication reduces interruption when a server fails; backups make it possible to recover data or return to a selected earlier state. A live replica can carry forward an unwanted change, so it does not replace a retained backup. Conversely, restoring from a backup and replaying logs is not a fast substitute for a prepared standby when rapid service resumption is the goal.
PostgreSQL’s guidance is direct: “As with everything that contains valuable data, PostgreSQL databases should be backed up regularly.” PostgreSQL 18: Backup and Restore
