For most data teams, the practical choice is not observability software or custom checks—it is how to combine them. A data observability platform can monitor production data across assets, surface anomalies, and provide lineage and incident context. Custom conflict-review workflows are better for business-specific reconciliations and rules only your organization can define. Use the platform for broad visibility, keep domain rules in version-controlled code, and connect both to one incident process.

What each approach does

Data observability tools

Observability tools aim to monitor data systems beyond a fixed set of hand-written assertions. Monte Carlo’s vendor-authored evaluation guide organizes coverage into five pillars: freshness (whether data arrived when expected), volume (whether row counts are too high or low), schema (structural changes), quality (values outside expected norms), and lineage (how data flows and what depends on it). This is Monte Carlo’s framework, not a formal industry standard. Monte Carlo’s evaluation guide

A platform’s value is not simply whether it can execute a check. Assess how much coverage is automated, how useful its lineage and root-cause support are, whether incidents can be managed effectively, and how it fits your security, deployment, integration, support, and time-to-value needs.

Custom conflict-review workflows

Custom checks address known rules that are specific to your business: reconciliations between systems, domain invariants, or conflicts that require a human to review an exception. They can live in SQL, dbt tests, or other version-controlled code your team understands and maintains. A check that confirms two ledgers balance, for example, is different from a general anomaly signal: the organization defines what “balanced” means and what to do when it is not.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to build, buy, or combine

Build the rule when the problem is specific and understood

Custom logic is a good fit when the set of conflicts is finite, the business rule can be stated clearly, and the team can own its maintenance. For each rule, record its owner, severity, expected behavior, and exception-resolution path. These details make a failed check actionable rather than just another alert.

Buy broader coverage when infrastructure is the burden

Consider a platform when you need monitoring across many assets, signals for anomalies you did not anticipate, lineage, impact analysis, alert grouping, or integrations across a wider data stack—and do not want to build and maintain that coverage yourself. SYNQ and Monte Carlo present these as vendor recommendations, not universal rules. Test whether the coverage applies to your actual warehouses, pipelines, transformations, and BI assets rather than assuming a product demo proves it. SYNQ’s build-versus-buy guide

Combine them when broad detection and business meaning both matter

A hybrid approach keeps general monitoring and domain-specific rules distinct but connected. Store custom checks in version control, then route their failures into the same response process used for platform incidents. Make sure responders can tell which events represent a known business conflict requiring review and which are broader data-health signals. This is a vendor-backed decision framework, not a claim that every team needs both. DataObservability’s build-versus-buy guidance

Evaluation area What to verify
Coverage Which warehouses, transformation tools, pipelines, and BI assets can be monitored? What is covered automatically, and what requires custom rules?
Detection Can it flag late or missing data, volume shifts, schema changes, null spikes, and unexpected distributions? How does it handle normal seasonality?
Lineage and impact Is lineage table-level or column-level? Does it include the systems and consumers relevant to your incidents, and can your team validate the displayed blast radius?
Business logic Can your team express reconciliations and domain-specific conflict criteria? How will those rules be versioned, owned, and maintained?
Incident workflow Can alerts be assigned, grouped, prioritized, routed, and resolved with usable history? Can platform detections and custom-check failures be handled in a connected process?
Security and architecture What permissions and connection model are required? What deployment choices and controls are available, what support commitments apply, and how does monitoring affect warehouse or lakehouse performance?
Cost and effort Include subscription, staff time, maintenance, compute, onboarding, and the cost of gaps or noisy alerts. Ask vendors to state pricing and workload assumptions; current comparable prices are not established by the sources cited here.
Time to useful signal Measure time to the first actionable alert, false positives, missed incidents, and investigation effort in your own pilot. Do not assume demo results will carry over to production.

Monte Carlo’s guide also names enterprise readiness, root-cause analysis, time-to-value, and AI observability among its evaluation criteria. Those are useful prompts, but the guide is vendor-authored; prioritize capabilities that solve documented problems in your environment. Monte Carlo’s evaluation criteria

What lineage views can—and cannot—show

Lineage and catalog visualizations are only as complete as their underlying metadata. Microsoft says Purview’s Unified Catalog observability view brings together existing technical lineage and data-quality metadata; it does not create that metadata or lineage. The cited Microsoft documentation labels the capability preview and was last updated November 11, 2025, so confirm its availability before relying on it as a generally available feature. How to think about DIY cost estimates

DataObservability’s 2026 build-versus-buy article estimates about two engineer quarters to build to commercial parity and 10–20% of an engineer for ongoing maintenance. It also estimates approximately US$100,000 in build time and US$20,000–40,000 per year in maintenance, using U.S. fully loaded labor assumptions. These are that vendor’s estimates, not an independently validated labor study or a universal cost benchmark; recalculate for your location, compensation structure, scope, and existing infrastructure.
