The five cycling Monuments are Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia. They are a customary group of prestigious one-day races, not a separate race format. Their identities come from a combination of history, terrain, season and the demands they place on riders: a very long approach to a selective finale at Milan-San Remo, steep cobbled climbs in Flanders, rough pavé at Paris-Roubaix, repeated Ardennes climbing at Liège, and a climber-oriented autumn race at Il Lombardia.
Those distinctions describe each race’s broad character, not an unchanging course. Routes and distances vary by edition, and tactical outcomes are never guaranteed by terrain alone.
What makes a race a Monument?
“Monument” is the established name for five especially prestigious one-day races: Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia. The label reflects their history and standing in the sport. It is not, on the evidence available here, a distinct race format with its own formal course rules. A Monument is still a one-day race; what sets the group apart is the stature and identity attached to these particular events.

There is a separate, formal measure of sporting importance in the Union Cycliste Internationale’s points regulations. In the UCI’s 2026 road regulations, winners of the five named WorldTour one-day races receive 800 ranking points. The next listed group of WorldTour one-day races awards 500 points for first place. That points hierarchy demonstrates the races’ high ranking value under those regulations; it should not be mistaken for a definition of the word “Monument.”

Cyclingnews describes the five as among the toughest one-day races, but “toughest” does not identify a single shared challenge. One race may demand endurance over an unusually long distance, another repeated accelerations on climbs, and another the ability to ride rough cobbled sectors. There is no useful evidence-based way to declare one objectively the hardest for every rider or in every edition.
The five races at a glance
| Race | Season and setting | Signature challenge | Broad rider or race tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan-San Remo | Italian spring race, traditionally in March | A very long race before the late Cipressa and Poggio climbs | Endurance first; the finale can give attackers a chance to break away |
| Tour of Flanders | Belgian spring cobbled classic | Repeated short, steep climbs on cobbled roads | Repeated accelerations and positioning ahead of key climbs matter |
| Paris-Roubaix | Northern French spring cobbled classic | Rough pavé sectors and a finish at the Roubaix velodrome | A distinct technical and mechanical challenge |
| Liège-Bastogne-Liège | Belgian Ardennes race in April | A long, hilly route with repeated climbs | More of a climbing test than the cobbled northern classics |
| Il Lombardia | Italian autumn classic | Climbing, including longer ascents than the short power climbs associated with Flanders | A late-season race commonly characterized as a climber’s classic |
The comparison is about each race’s broad identity, not a promise that every edition will follow precisely the same route. For an edition’s exact distance, start and finish, or climb list, consult that year’s organiser route information rather than treating a general description as a permanent specification.
Milan-San Remo: endurance before the finale
Milan-San Remo is the first Monument of the men’s season and is traditionally held in March. Its defining contrast is between a very long race and a finale that can become selective. The Cipressa and Poggio come late, after an approach of almost 300 km. That figure is an approximate description reported by Cyclingnews as accessed in 2026, not a fixed distance that applies to every annual route.

The late climbs create an opportunity for attackers to try to split the race after a prolonged endurance test. That does not mean the climbs dictate the result: they are features of a finale in which the race can become selective, not a guarantee that a particular kind of rider will win. The route’s broad logic is what makes the event distinctive: riders must arrive at the decisive part of the race after spending many hours on the road.

The men’s Milan-San Remo began in 1907, according to Cyclingnews. That history is one part of the event’s Monument standing, alongside its place as the season’s first Monument for men and its unusually long format.
Tour of Flanders: cobbles combined with steep climbs
The Tour of Flanders is distinguished by the way it combines cobbled roads with repeated short, steep climbs. Those features make it different from a race defined mainly by long stretches of rough pavé. Riders must contend with the climb itself while also contesting position before important ascents, and the repeated efforts make acceleration a recurring demand rather than a single late-race test.
Positioning is not merely a matter of convenience in this terrain pattern. If a rider wants to contest a key climb, the approach to it matters: the race’s repeated steep ascents make it important to be well placed before the effort begins. That gives the event a different rhythm from a race whose signature challenge is primarily surviving extended rough sectors.

Paris-Roubaix: rough pavé and the velodrome finish
Paris-Roubaix is the northern French cobbled Monument, defined by its rough pavé sectors and its finish in the Roubaix velodrome. The challenge is not simply that the route is cobbled: the rough sectors create a distinctive technical and mechanical test. That makes it a different kind of race from Flanders, where short, steep climbs are integrated repeatedly with cobbled roads.
Cyclingnews describes the men’s course as nearly 260 km. Treat that as the source’s broad route description, not a guaranteed distance for every edition. The finish at the Roubaix velodrome is a defining part of the event’s identity, while the route leading there is known for its pavé sectors.
The women’s race has had a shorter, changing distance in the editions cited: it was 116 km in 2021 and had grown to nearly 150 km by 2025, according to Cyclingnews. These are edition-specific figures, not a permanent distance or a forecast for future routes. Paris-Roubaix’s women’s race began in 2021.
Liège-Bastogne-Liège: repeated climbing in the Ardennes
Liège-Bastogne-Liège, often called La Doyenne, is the oldest first edition among the five in the cited overview: it dates to 1892, according to Cyclingnews. Its eastern Belgian route is hilly and includes climbs such as Saint-Roch, Wanne, Stockeu, La Redoute and Roche-aux-Faucons.

The repeated climbing is the key distinction. Liège is a long, hilly race on roads described as smoother than those of the cobbled northern classics, making it more suited to climbers than a race whose signature test is rough pavé. That is a broad comparison of race character, not a guarantee about which rider type will win a particular edition. The specific climbs and route shape can change, so the current route is the authority for an edition’s details.
The women’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège had its first edition in 2017, according to Cyclingnews.

Il Lombardia is the outlier in the calendar: unlike the other four spring races, it is an autumn Monument. It is known as a climber’s classic, with longer ascents than the short power climbs associated with Flanders. Its season position and climbing character make it a different kind of test from the spring cobbled races and from Milan-San Remo’s long approach to a selective finale.

How the Monuments differ in practice
A quick way to distinguish the five is to ask what kind of difficulty defines the race, rather than trying to rank them on a single scale. All are major one-day races, but their defining demands are not interchangeable.
- For sheer length before the decisive finale: Milan-San Remo stands out. Its approximately 300 km description and late Cipressa and Poggio climbs put endurance and finale timing in the same race.
- For repeated short, steep efforts over cobbles: the Tour of Flanders is the clearest example. Its climbs and cobbled roads combine repeated accelerations with the need to contest position.
- For rough pavé as a technical and mechanical challenge: Paris-Roubaix has the most distinct identity, with its sectors of rough cobbles and the Roubaix velodrome finish.
- For repeated climbing on a hilly route: Liège-Bastogne-Liège is the Ardennes test, with named climbs including La Redoute and Roche-aux-Faucons.
- For an autumn climbing classic: Il Lombardia is the seasonal outlier, associated with longer ascents and a late-season place on the calendar.
These distinctions help explain why the Monuments attract different kinds of attention, but they do not create rigid rider categories. A race’s terrain can suggest what strengths will matter; it cannot establish in advance how the tactics will unfold or who will win. Annual route changes also matter: a general identity remains useful, while the exact course belongs to its edition.
Men’s and women’s Monument calendars
The women’s calendar does not mirror the men’s list of five. The current overview cited by Cyclingnews reports women’s editions of four Monuments: the Tour of Flanders, first held in 2004; Liège-Bastogne-Liège, first held in 2017; Paris-Roubaix, first held in 2021; and the revived Milan-San Remo race, held from 2024. It reports no women’s Il Lombardia.
That is a status report, not a permanent rule about what organisers may stage in future. The years identify the cited women’s race editions or introductions; they do not imply that the men’s and women’s routes are identical or that women’s races have the same distance. Paris-Roubaix’s 2021 and 2025 women’s distances illustrate why edition matters: the cited distances changed from 116 km to nearly 150 km.
Which details should be checked for a particular edition?
The Monument label is stable as a way to identify the five races, but useful course details are edition-dependent. Before quoting an exact distance, start or finish, or climb list, check the organiser’s route information for that race and year. This is particularly important for the distance figures above: the approximate Milan-San Remo and men’s Paris-Roubaix descriptions are not annual guarantees, and the women’s Paris-Roubaix figures refer specifically to 2021 and 2025.
For a broad comparison, the terrain patterns are the more durable guide: late climbs after a long approach at Milan-San Remo; repeated short, steep cobbled climbs at Flanders; rough pavé at Roubaix; repeated Ardennes climbing at Liège; and a climbing-oriented autumn event at Il Lombardia. Keep those identities separate from the exact course details of a given edition, and the word “Monument” becomes a useful shorthand rather than a misleading claim that all five races test riders in the same way.
