For an AI agent that can autonomously generate and execute code, use a virtual machine or microVM as the default host-isolation boundary. Ordinary containers share the host kernel, so a kernel or runtime flaw can put the host and neighboring workloads at risk. A VM gives the workload a separate guest kernel, but it does not protect secrets, files, or services that you deliberately expose to it. Whichever compute boundary you choose, also restrict network access, mediate credentials, limit tools and resources, and treat shared workspaces as untrusted.
What is the difference between a container and a virtual machine?
A container is an isolated process environment built on OS-level virtualization: the container and host use the same kernel. A virtual machine (VM) runs a guest operating system with its own kernel on virtualized hardware, separated from the host by a hypervisor. That difference matters when an agent is allowed to run code you do not trust: a container boundary depends on the security of the shared host kernel, while a VM adds a separate guest-kernel boundary.
Kubernetes documentation describes containers as a weaker isolation boundary than VMs because containers are processes on a shared kernel. It recommends sandboxing when workloads may be malicious or execute untrusted code. The distinction is about the consequences of a flaw, not a guarantee that one environment can never be compromised. A VM can still be misconfigured, and a compromised agent can still misuse any file, credential, network route, or service that its environment can reach.

What happens if the runtime or kernel has a flaw?
With an ordinary container, code runs against the host kernel through the container runtime and its permitted interfaces. A flaw in the kernel or runtime could therefore threaten the host and other workloads that depend on that host. With a VM, a flaw inside the guest kernel does not, by itself, make the guest the host: the hypervisor remains between them. A hypervisor flaw or unsafe configuration can still undermine that separation, so the VM reduces a class of risk rather than eliminating all risk.

What does a second boundary add?
Layered isolation can narrow the consequences of mistakes. OpenAI describes restricted containers running inside lightweight VMs: the container limits files and processes within the VM, while the VM has its own kernel and is isolated from the host by a hypervisor. This design illustrates that containers and VMs need not be competing choices. A container can constrain an agent inside a VM, with the VM serving as the more important host boundary.
Should I run an untrusted AI coding agent in Docker or a VM?
If the agent can execute generated code without close human review, prefer a VM or microVM for host isolation. A standard Docker container may be a reasonable choice for trusted first-party software or lower-risk work when kernel sharing is acceptable and Linux permissions are configured carefully; it is not equivalent to a VM merely because it is called a sandbox.
“Untrusted” describes the code and actions the agent may produce, not whether the model or tool is reputable. An agent can make an unexpected change, run a malicious dependency, or act on an instruction that causes it to use its available tools in an unsafe way. The relevant question is what the agent could affect if its code or process is compromised—not only whether its intended task is benign.
- Use an ordinary container for trusted services, low-risk evaluations, or environments where shared-kernel isolation is an accepted risk and permissions, networking, and mounts are tightly limited.
- Consider gVisor when you need stronger mediation of system calls and reduced direct dependence on the host kernel while preserving a container-oriented workflow.
- Use Kata Containers or a microVM when code is autonomous or untrusted, workloads are multi-tenant, or the separate guest kernel is a key part of the security boundary.
- Consider a full VM when a conventional guest operating system and its compatibility options fit the workload better than a smaller sandbox. The evidence here does not establish a universal performance ranking between full VMs and microVMs.
Docker’s sandbox documentation describes a product-specific approach in which each agent runs in a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel, and calls that microVM the primary trust boundary. It also describes additional controls around networking, workspace access, credentials, and the Docker Engine. Those are useful layers to evaluate, but a product’s use of a microVM does not make every configuration or exposed resource safe by default.
How do gVisor, Kata Containers, microVMs, and full VMs compare?
These options differ in where they place the boundary and in how much of a conventional container or VM workflow they preserve. The right choice depends on required kernel behavior, compatibility, accelerator access, operational overhead, and the impact you are willing to accept if an isolation layer fails.

| Option | Isolation approach | When it fits | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary container | OS-level isolation; shares the host kernel | Trusted workloads or lower-risk tasks where kernel sharing is acceptable | Linux permissions, mounts, network reachability, exposed tools, and the consequences of a host-kernel flaw |
| gVisor | Application-kernel sandbox that mediates workload system calls rather than acting as a VM hypervisor or simple syscall filter | Workloads that benefit from additional isolation while retaining container semantics | Whether the application works with the supported system-call and kernel behavior, and whether the protection meets the threat model |
| Kata Containers | VM-like isolation for container workloads, using a separate guest kernel | Untrusted code where a guest-kernel boundary is important but a container-oriented workflow is useful | Runtime integration, required kernel features, networking, filesystem design, and accelerator access |
| MicroVM | Lightweight VM with a separate guest kernel | Autonomous code execution, multi-tenant untrusted workloads, browser or computer-use agents | Startup and density needs, compatibility, guest setup, network policy, credentials, and host integrations |
| Full VM | Guest operating system and kernel isolated from the host by a hypervisor | Workloads that need conventional VM capabilities or a distinct guest environment | Guest maintenance, integration complexity, required performance, and the same data and network exposures that affect other sandboxes |
gVisor calls itself an application-kernel workload-isolation solution for untrusted code, containers, and applications. It is neither a VM hypervisor nor simply a syscall filter. That makes it a distinct middle ground, not a synonym for a VM. Kubernetes Agent Sandbox, a developing API for singleton, stateful agent workloads, supports gVisor and Kata Containers runtimes for untrusted code.
Google Cloud lists AI agents that generate and execute code without supervision among microVM use cases for GKE Sandbox, which is intended to protect clusters from untrusted or third-party workloads. That example supports considering microVM isolation for such agents; it does not establish that a particular cloud configuration meets every organization’s security requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow should I choose an isolation boundary for my agent?
Start with what the agent is allowed to do and what an attacker or faulty tool could reach, then select the lightest boundary that fits that risk. Do not pick a runtime based only on its startup reputation or on the word “sandbox”; decide which failures you need to contain and test the actual integrations the agent requires.
- Classify the code and autonomy. Is the agent executing only reviewed, trusted code, or can it generate, download, modify, and run code independently? The more autonomy and uncertainty, the stronger the case for a separate guest kernel.
- Identify exposed assets. List credentials, source code, shared directories, internal services, network routes, and host tools available from the environment. A stronger compute boundary does not undo access that has already been granted.
- Check workload compatibility. Determine which system calls, kernel features, files, devices, and tools the agent actually needs. Test those requirements with the intended runtime rather than assuming every container workload works unchanged under a different isolation layer.
- Choose the boundary. Use an ordinary container only when its shared-kernel risk is acceptable. Evaluate gVisor for additional syscall mediation with container semantics. Use Kata Containers or a microVM when a separate guest kernel is a central control; use a full VM if its environment and operational model better match the workload.
- Constrain what crosses the boundary. Set network, filesystem, credential, tool, and resource policies before launching the agent. Keep sensitive secrets outside the guest where possible and provide narrowly scoped, short-lived access through a policy-controlled proxy.
- Test the complete workflow. Include workspace mounts, build and test commands, dependency installation, service calls, and the exact tools used by the agent. Confirm both that required tasks work and that unneeded paths are blocked.
- Review outputs before reuse. Treat agent-modified files as untrusted until inspected, especially scripts or configuration that may run later on a host, in CI, or in an editor.
How do I stop an AI agent from escaping its sandbox?
No single runtime choice can promise that an agent will never escape or cause harm. The practical goal is defense in depth: choose an appropriate compute boundary, minimize what the agent can access, and reduce the impact of any one control failing.
Make network access explicit
Deny outbound traffic by default, then allow only destinations the task needs. Separate paths from the agent to the host, to internal services, and to the public internet so that an allowed connection in one direction does not silently grant the others. Review DNS and proxy behavior as part of the policy, and avoid giving an agent broad access to internal networks just because it needs to download one dependency.

Keep credentials out of the workspace
Do not place long-lived secrets in files the agent can read or modify. Prefer credentials held outside the guest and mediated by a policy-controlled proxy that grants only the specific operation and scope needed. Short lifetime and narrow permissions reduce the value of a credential if the agent exposes it, writes it into a log, or leaves it in a modified file.

A container or VM cannot protect a host file that is intentionally mounted with write access. Give the agent a dedicated workspace, limit mounts to necessary paths, and avoid exposing host configuration or credentials. Inspect changes before executing them elsewhere. Build scripts, hooks, CI configuration, and IDE or AI-tool settings deserve particular scrutiny because they may execute later in a more privileged environment.
Restrict tools and host integrations
Grant only the tools necessary for the task, and scope each tool’s access independently of the sandbox. A tool that can reach a host service or modify a repository may create a route around the intended compute boundary. Docker’s sandbox documentation describes controls for the Docker Engine as well as network, workspace, and credential controls; that layered model is a reminder to assess the surrounding interfaces, not just the guest kernel.
Limit resources and observe behavior
Set resource limits appropriate to the task and monitor the agent’s process, network, and tool activity. These controls help contain runaway work and make unexpected behavior easier to investigate, but they are not substitutes for kernel isolation or least privilege. The exact limits and monitoring signals depend on the workload and platform; no universal thresholds are established here.
What trade-offs should I expect from a VM or microVM?
A separate guest kernel improves the host-isolation boundary, but it adds a layer to configure, integrate, and maintain. Whether that cost is acceptable depends on the workload and platform. The available evidence establishes the architectural security differences and use cases, not a comparable current benchmark for latency, overhead, density, or escape rates.

- Compatibility: workloads may depend on particular system calls, kernel features, or devices. Verify these with the chosen sandbox rather than assuming a different runtime is transparent.
- Accelerators: GPU and other accelerator access can affect which isolation model is practical. Check support for the exact runtime, hardware, and workload; do not infer availability from the general fact that a platform uses VMs.
- Startup and density: these can influence whether a design suits short-lived, high-volume agents. Compare the actual configuration you plan to deploy; the cited material does not supply a shared performance dataset from which to declare a universal winner.
- Operations: VM-like sandboxes add guest and runtime integration concerns. Managed sandbox services may reduce some platform work, but they still require deliberate policies for identity, networking, files, and tools.
- Observability: monitoring has to cover the boundary you use and the interfaces around it. Assess what you can see about the guest or container, the host, network flows, and agent tool calls before relying on it for incident response.
Do not treat a small startup cost or a particular benchmark as the sole reason to accept shared-kernel exposure for untrusted code. Equally, do not deploy a VM as a security talisman while leaving broad credentials, writable host mounts, or unrestricted network access available. The correct comparison is the total design: isolation boundary plus permissions, integrations, and operational controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When are ordinary containers secure enough?
Containers can be an appropriate choice when the workload is trusted or the threat model explicitly accepts shared-kernel risk, and when the environment applies least privilege. This is most defensible when the agent cannot run arbitrary generated code, sensitive host resources are not exposed, and the organization can constrain networking, files, processes, and tools.
For code-generating evaluations, distinguish a controlled test of a known task from an agent permitted to execute arbitrary code or interact with broad system resources. “Low risk” should be a decision backed by the code’s permissions and the possible impact of failure, not by the assumption that a container is equivalent to a machine boundary. If the workload crosses into autonomous or multi-tenant untrusted execution, reassess whether a guest kernel is warranted.
What should I review before reusing an agent’s workspace?
Assume that files the agent could edit may contain commands or configuration that affect a later, more trusted execution context. Inspect changes before running them on the host or in CI, and check the paths most likely to trigger automated execution.
- Build, install, and test scripts, including commands that fetch or execute dependencies.
- Hooks and automation configuration that runs on commits, builds, deployments, or editor startup.
- CI definitions and workflow files that may receive repository or deployment credentials.
- IDE and AI-tool settings that can enable integrations, extensions, commands, or broader file access.
- New or modified files that may contain credentials, logs, or references to sensitive paths.
Review is especially important when a workspace is shared between a sandbox and a host process: the agent may be unable to directly cross the VM boundary yet still leave a file that a host-side tool later executes. Prefer a deliberate handoff of reviewed artifacts over automatic execution of everything in a shared directory.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kubernetes Agent Sandbox?
It is a developing Kubernetes API for singleton, stateful agent workloads. Its supported sandbox runtimes include gVisor and Kata Containers for running untrusted code.
Does using a microVM mean an agent cannot reach the host?
No. A microVM provides a separate guest-kernel boundary, but the agent can still interact with host-mounted files, network routes, tools, or services that the surrounding configuration exposes. Review those interfaces separately from the guest isolation.
Is there a proven startup-time or escape-rate advantage for one option?
The cited material does not establish a comparable current benchmark or escape-rate dataset across containers, gVisor, Kata, microVMs, and full VMs. Benchmark the actual workload and configuration if those operational measurements will affect your deployment choice.
