Quick Steps

Follow the steps below to clear recent files in Windows 10 File Explorer Quick access:

  1. Right-click the Windows 10 Start Menu and select File Explorer. File Explorer should open in Quick access mode.

  1. Then, on the top left of File Explorer, click File and select Options from the displayed list.
Step 2 above will open the General tab of Folder Options.

  1. Finally, to clear recent files in Windows 10, on the Privacy section of Folder Options, – on the right side of “Clear file explorer history” – click Clear.
Once you click Clear, Recent Files will be cleared and display “0”. If you want to stop your Windows 10 from keeping recent files, perform step 4 below.
  1. To stop Windows 10 from keeping recent files, still on the Privacy section of Folder Options General tab, uncheck “Show recently used files in Quick access”. Then, click OK.
Once you complete step 4 above, the “Recent files” section will no longer show in Quick access. From the point you made this change, recently accessed files will no longer display in Quick access.
