Dell XPS 13 7390: At First Glance

The Dell XPS 13 7390 is a recent upgrade of Dell’s XPS 13 laptop. Dell has combined very good features with remarkable hardware components to produce XPS 13 7390.

Moreover, the laptop feels too good to be true when you look at its features. It also feels light despite being equipped with powerful hardware components.

Going by its specification, this laptop ought to deliver a satisfactory performance. It should be almost as powerful as some desktops.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Design, Dimension, and Weight

In terms of its design, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate the Dell XPS 13 7390 from its predecessors. The design of this laptop is almost entirely the same as its previous model.

This laptop maintains the XPS 13’s smooth aluminum build. As a result, it still has an elegant appearance.

To make it better, Dell offers the laptop in 3 color variants. You can purchase the traditional Platinum Silver model, the Rose Gold model, or the Opine White model.

Additionally, the Dell XPS 13 7390 is very compact and portable. It weighs 1230 g and measures 302 x 199 x 15.8 mm.

To help you compare this laptop with some of its competitors, it is lighter than the 13-inch MacBook that weighs 1400 g. The Dell XPS 13 7390 is also lighter than the HP Spectre x360 that weighs 1270 g.

On a closer look, you will be thrilled by the engineering of this laptop. It’s anodized aluminum covering and its smooth carbon-fiber deck are examples of its carefully engineered designs.

Moreover, Dell has further trimmed down this laptop’s bezels even though the XPS 13 always had slim bezels. What’s more exciting is that Dell still found a way to accommodate the laptop’s webcam at the top bezel.

For the keyboard, Dell didn’t make any changes. Its backlit keys are still very responsive with a 1.3 mm key travel between them.

Furthermore, the glass-coated touchpad also remains unchanged. It is as sensitive as ever.

Other unchanged features are the ports. For XPS 13 7390, Dell still offers 1 USB-C 3.1 with power delivery & DisplayPort.

That is not all the ports! You also get 2 Thunderbolt 3 with power delivery & DisplayPort, and a headset jack.

In conclusion, this laptop’s build and design are remarkable. Therefore, it scores a nine in this review.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Processor (CPU) Performance

Dell equipped the Dell XPS 13 7390 with a quad-core Intel Core i7-10510U processor. This processor has a base frequency of 1.8 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.9 GHz.

As expected, this laptop’s new Intel 10th-gen processor improves its performance. Dell XPS 13 7390 is faster than its predecessors and most of its competitors.

On a Geekbench 4 test, the Dell XPS 13 7390 scored 22,492 points, crushing the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s 18,221 score. The Dell XPS 13 7390 also outperformed HP Spectre x360 that scored 14,935.

What’s more, Dell XPS 13 7390 even outperformed the premium laptop average score of 14,597.

As a result of its incredible CPU performance, the Dell XPS 13 7390 scores an eight in this review.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Memory (RAM) Performance

Dell offers two RAM configurations for Dell XPS 13 7390. You can purchase this laptop with either 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM.

This review is based on the 16 GB RAM. While testing the Dell XPS 13 7390 with this RAM size, I barely noticed any lags when I opened 26 Google Chrome tabs.

In addition to that, I decided to open 2 YouTube videos while I was streaming a movie on Netflix. Despite having all of those operations running, the Dell XPS 13 7390 kept running smoothly.

Furthermore, the Dell XPS 13 7390 still didn’t slow down while I kept switching between tabs and surfing heavy sites.

Evidently, the Dell XPS 13 7390 is an incredible multitasking laptop. Therefore, it scores eight in this review.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Storage Options and Performance

The Dell XPS 13 7390 ships with 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD storage. The laptop also offers a microSD card reader for storage expansion.

This laptop’s 1 TB SSD copied 4.97 GB of mixed media files in 6 seconds at a rate of 732 MBps. Its transfer rate is much faster than the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1’s 463 MBps file copy rate.

Furthermore, the Dell XPS 13 7390 completely outpaced the Spectre x360 that copied the file at a rate of 392 MBps. The Dell XPS 13 7390 also surpassed the category average rate of 541 MBps.

However, the Dell XPS 13 7390 couldn’t match up to the MacBook Pro’s incredible 2,573 MBps file copy rate.

Nonetheless, the Dell XPS 13 7390 scores an eight in this review for its impressive storage speed and capacity.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Graphics Card Performance

The Dell XPS 13 7390 features integrated Intel UHD Graphics. This GPU has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1150 MHz.

Unlike its other features of this laptop already discussed, you should not expect a mind-blowing GPU performance from the Dell XPS 13 7390. Moreover, this laptop doesn’t have a dedicated VRAM that could help improve its GPU performance.

Nevertheless, the Dell XPS 13 7390 can run many light games at medium or high settings. However, you will have to reduce game settings to the lowest in order to play most AAA title games.

On a gaming performance test, the Dell XPS 13 7390 ran Dirt 3 at 40 FPS. Even though this is a very good playable rate, its competitors, however, offered higher frame rates.

For example, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 ran the game at 45 FPS, while HP Spectres x360 played the game at 56 FPS.

As a result of its below average gaming performance, the Dell XPS 13 7390 scores a six in this review.

Dell XPS 13 7390: Battery Life &and Performance

The Dell XPS 13 7390 comes with a 4-Cell, 52 Whr, integrated battery. Dell advertises that this laptop can last up to 19 hours 24 mins.

However, the battery life test I carried out didn’t get me anywhere near the promised lifetime. Nonetheless, there is a little improvement in this laptop’s battery life.

The Dell XPS 13 7390 lasted a few minutes longer than its previous model. On a battery test that involved continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi, the Dell XPS 13 7390 lasted 7 hours 56 minutes.

In comparison with its competitors, the Dell XPS 13 7390’s battery life didn’t match up well enough. In comparison, Dell XPS 2-in-1 lasted 10 hours 57 minutes while the Spectre x360 lasted 12 hours 7 mins.

Additionally, MacBook Pro also outlasted the Dell XPS 13 7390 – it lasted for 8 hours 41 minutes.

Comparatively, the Dell XPS 13 7390’s battery life is not very impressive. Therefore, it scores seven in this review.
