Claude Code is usually the better fit for terminal-first work that spans a repository; VS Code’s AI features are usually better for focused edits, inline help, and reviewing code in the editor. The choice is not strictly either-or: you can run Claude inside VS Code, or use editor-based suggestions for small tasks and Claude Code for larger delegated work. Which setup works best depends on the task, your preferred review process, and the account limits that apply to your chosen tools.
What is the difference between Claude Code and VS Code AI extensions?
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that works from a terminal or supported IDE. You describe a goal, and it can inspect a codebase, change files, run commands and tests, and connect with developer tools. VS Code is an editor with several AI workflows: chat and inline chat for questions or targeted edits, suggestions as you type, and agent experiences that can work across files and run checks in the workspace.
That distinction is about the center of the workflow, not a hard limit on what either can do. Claude Code can be used in VS Code, and VS Code agents can handle tasks that touch multiple files. In practical terms, Claude Code starts with a task-oriented, terminal-centered experience; VS Code keeps AI assistance close to the code, navigation, terminal, tests, and debugger.
| Decision point | Claude Code | VS Code AI workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Best natural fit | Repository investigation, multi-file changes, shell commands, migrations, test runs, or Git-related work. | Inline completion, quick changes, visual navigation, debugging, and reviewing work in the editor. |
| Main interface | Terminal, with support for use in an IDE. | Editor chat, inline chat, suggestions, and agent sessions in the VS Code workspace. |
| How it handles work | Can plan and carry out a described task, including reading and editing files and running commands. | Ranges from suggestions and focused chat to an agent that finds relevant code, edits files, and runs checks. |
| Review emphasis | Review the agent’s proposed changes and command or test results; permission prompts provide control over actions. | Review changes in the editor and keep code, tests, terminal output, and debugging tools in the same workspace. |
| Account and cost | Access depends on the Claude plan or Console account and its usage limits or charges. | VS Code is free for private and commercial use; AI features and allowances depend on the selected provider and plan. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a claim that one tool writes better code. The official product descriptions explain capabilities and interaction modes, but do not establish a controlled head-to-head accuracy or speed ranking.

Which workflow is better for the task I need to do?
Start with the shape of the task. If the work requires coordinated changes across a repository and repeated command-line checks, begin with Claude Code. If you are actively editing and need suggestions, a quick explanation, or changes you can inspect in context, start with VS Code’s editor-centered tools.
Choose Claude Code for repository-scale tasks
- Investigating unfamiliar code: Ask it to trace how a behavior is implemented or identify relevant files before proposing a change. It can explore the codebase rather than relying only on the open file.
- Changes across related files: A migration, feature, or refactor may involve several modules, tests, and supporting files. Claude Code is designed to plan and work through that broader task.
- Tasks that require shell tools: If the work depends on Git, running a test command, or another command-line step, the terminal-centered workflow keeps those actions close to the agent.
- Long-running work: Anthropic describes Claude Code as able to handle larger jobs such as refactors and new features that are long-running and asynchronous, as well as routine bug fixes and testing.
For example, a request to investigate a failing test, locate the relevant implementation, make a coordinated fix, and run checks is a more natural agent task than a one-line completion request. Give the agent a clear goal and constraints, then inspect the changed files and results rather than treating a completed task as proof that the change is correct.
Choose VS Code’s built-in AI workflow for close-in editing
- Typing and completion: Inline suggestions help when you want assistance as you write without handing off a larger task.
- Questions about a local passage: Chat or inline chat can keep a small explanation or edit focused on the code you are working with.
- Immediate visual review: The editor provides a convenient place to inspect proposed edits alongside surrounding code, tests, terminal output, and debugging tools.
- Mixed levels of delegation: You can ask a focused question for a small change, or use an agent when the task genuinely requires finding code, editing across files, and running checks.
Microsoft’s description of the VS Code agent workflow emphasizes that an agent can find relevant code, make changes, and run checks without requiring you to direct every search, edit, and test run. That makes VS Code more than an autocomplete surface; the distinction is that its AI tools live within the editor workspace and offer a range from lightweight assistance to agentic work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Claude Code better for large refactors?
It is a strong fit for a refactor that requires repository-wide investigation, coordinated file edits, and test execution, but the available product information does not prove it is universally better at refactoring than a VS Code agent. The advantage is workflow alignment: Claude Code can inspect files, use terminal tools, and run checks as part of a longer task.
For a safer refactor, delegate in stages rather than asking for a large change and accepting it wholesale:

- Ask for an investigation or plan first. Identify the behavior to preserve, relevant areas of the code, and likely tests before edits begin.
- Constrain the change. Specify the intended result and important boundaries, such as interfaces or behavior that must not change.
- Review the proposed edits. Check that the changes match the plan and that unrelated files or behavior were not affected.
- Run the relevant checks. Ask the agent to run the appropriate tests or commands, then inspect their actual output. A command being run is not the same as a test passing.
- Use Git as a review aid. Examine the diff before keeping or committing a broad change. Claude Code can work with Git, but that does not replace your review of the resulting patch.
For a refactor contained to one small section of an open file, an editor-based edit may be easier to supervise. Conversely, if you must trace dependencies, alter multiple files, and verify behavior with commands, an agent-oriented workflow can avoid repeatedly moving between separate tools.
Can I use Claude inside VS Code?
Yes. Claude Code is not limited to a terminal-only setup: Anthropic’s VS Code Marketplace listing describes a Claude extension, and Microsoft documents a third-party-agent flow that brings provider-specific agent sessions into VS Code chat.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the Claude Code extension
The Marketplace listing says Claude can explore a codebase, read and write code, and run terminal commands with permission. It also describes using the current file or a text selection as context for proposed editor changes, along with subagents, custom slash commands, and MCP support. The listing specified VS Code 1.98.0 or later; it showed extension version 2.1.310, updated October 23, 2026. Marketplace details can change, so check the current listing and your installed VS Code version before setting it up.
Use VS Code’s third-party-agent integration
Microsoft’s third-party-agent guide describes sessions that use a provider’s SDK and agent harness while staying in the VS Code chat experience. For Claude sessions, the documented modes are Plan, Request approval, and Edit automatically. This is another route to an editor-based Claude experience, distinct from using Claude Code directly in a terminal.
Choose based on which interface you want to work in. If you want an explicitly terminal-centered session, use Claude Code in the terminal. If you want Claude’s agent behavior with editor-based review and permissions, use a supported VS Code route. Availability, extension versions, and account requirements should be checked against the current product listings.

How do approval controls and code review differ?
Both workflows offer ways to manage autonomy, but the controls are expressed differently. Claude Code uses permission prompts; VS Code’s documented Claude session modes let you choose whether the agent plans, requests approval, or edits automatically.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Control choice | What it means in practice | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code permission prompts | Actions such as running terminal commands can require permission, according to the extension listing. | When you want to review consequential actions rather than allow every action without interruption. |
| Plan | The VS Code Claude session focuses on planning before making changes. | Microsoft recommends it for unfamiliar areas where you want to understand the proposed approach first. |
| Request approval | The agent asks for approval when edits need review. | Useful when you want to supervise changes as they are proposed. |
| Edit automatically | The session edits without requesting approval for each edit. | Microsoft recommends it for contained work when a final diff review is acceptable. |
These settings do not make review optional. A permission decision governs what the agent may do; it does not establish that the change is correct, that the tests cover the affected behavior, or that the diff is appropriate. For unfamiliar or broad work, begin with a planning-oriented approach and review both the changes and command results before relying on them.
What can VS Code’s AI workflow do beyond inline suggestions?
VS Code’s AI workflow includes chat, inline chat, suggestions, planning, agents, model selection, MCP servers, skills, and plugins. The precise features available depend on the chosen tool or provider; “VS Code AI extensions” is not one single product with identical capabilities across every extension.
The distinction matters when comparing an agent with an autocomplete feature. Suggestions help with code as you type. Chat can answer questions or assist with a focused edit. An agent can take a broader task, find relevant code, change files, and run checks in the workspace. These modes can coexist in one editor, and you can select a smaller or larger level of delegation depending on the task.
VS Code also supports model selection, bring-your-own-key (BYOK), local models, MCP servers, skills, and plugins, according to Microsoft’s AI documentation. Those options make the editor workflow broader than choosing a single built-in assistant, but they do not mean every extension supports every option. Confirm the capabilities of the particular extension or provider you plan to use.

Do I need GitHub Copilot if I use Claude Code?
No. Claude Code can perform agentic coding tasks without requiring GitHub Copilot. The products address overlapping but distinct workflow needs: Claude Code can take on repository-level work, while an editor assistant can provide inline suggestions and focused help as you type.
You might use both if you value inline completion during routine editing and want Claude Code for larger delegated tasks. You might use only Claude Code if terminal-centered agent work is enough, or only VS Code’s AI features if editor-based assistance meets your needs. The official descriptions do not provide a universal quality ranking that would make one combination necessary for every developer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do setup, access, and usage cost?
There is no single comparable total-cost figure for these workflows. VS Code is free for private or commercial use, but AI-provider access and usage limits are separate considerations. Claude Code access is tied to eligible Claude plans or Anthropic Console usage, and the applicable limits or charges depend on the account path.
| Item | What is established | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code | Microsoft says the editor is free for private or commercial use. | Current AI provider plan, feature availability, and usage limits. |
| Copilot Free | Microsoft’s FAQ says it includes a monthly allowance of inline suggestions and AI credits. | The current allowance and terms, which may change. |
| Claude Code | Access is available through Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Anthropic Console accounts. The Marketplace listing says it uses the latest Claude models through those subscriptions or pay-as-you-go pricing. | Which account path applies, shared plan usage limits, and any Console charges. |
| Claude plan usage | Pro and Max subscribers can use the same account across Claude and Claude Code, with shared usage limits, according to the Claude Help Center. | Your own plan’s current limits and account terms. |
To compare your likely cost, first identify whether you already have access through a subscription, whether you will instead use Console pay-as-you-go access, and how your work will draw on any shared plan limits. Then compare that with the provider and allowance attached to your VS Code setup. Because usage and plan terms change, check the current account pages before choosing based on price.
Which workflow should I choose first?
Pick the smallest workflow that comfortably handles the work, and move to a more agentic one when the task needs broader context or tool use.

- Pro Software for Even Deeper Customization - Reassign the 4 hotkeys to your own shortcuts, design custom lighting effects, and program macros with your own keybindings.
- Choose terminal Claude Code first if you need repository-wide investigation, shell commands, migrations, test execution, Git history, or coordinated work across files.
- Choose VS Code’s built-in AI workflow first if you mainly want inline completion, quick edits, visual navigation, debugging, or one workspace for code, tests, terminal output, and diffs.
- Use Claude inside VS Code if you want Claude’s agent behavior with editor-based review and permission modes.
- Use both selectively if you want editor suggestions during ordinary typing and a separate agent workflow for larger delegated tasks.
Whichever route you choose, keep the review process matched to the size of the task. A local suggestion needs a quick check in context; a multi-file agent task calls for reviewing the full diff and confirming the relevant checks. Neither an editor window nor a successful command substitutes for deciding whether the change meets the requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Claude Code open a pull request for me?
Anthropic describes Claude Code as able to open pull requests, alongside planning, writing code, and running tests. Treat that as a capability rather than a guarantee that every task or account will complete a PR without your review.
Can Claude Code work on a task asynchronously?
Anthropic describes it as handling larger jobs, including refactors and new features, that are long-running and asynchronous. That describes the kind of work it can support, not a promise that a particular task will finish unattended or pass review.
