Choose Claude Code if your team wants an agent that works from the terminal alongside its existing IDE and tools; choose Cursor if you want an AI-first editor with the agent, review controls, and coding workflow in one place. Both can handle multi-file changes, debugging, and feature work. The practical difference is where you work and how you prefer to supervise the agent—not a proven difference in coding accuracy or speed. Your project’s privacy rules, integrations, and budget can make that choice just as important as the interface.
What is the difference between Claude Code and Cursor?
Claude Code is a terminal-centered coding agent from Anthropic. It works with command-line tools and existing IDEs rather than asking you to move your coding workflow into a new editor. Anthropic says it is available on macOS, Linux, and Windows.
Cursor is an AI-native editor. Its Agent works in the editor’s interface: Cursor says it can search a codebase, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, and fix errors. You can inspect the changes through diffs and checkpoints rather than treating the agent’s work as an opaque result.

Which tool fits your day-to-day coding workflow?
Start with the place where you and your team already make decisions. A tool that fits the normal edit, test, review, and merge loop is more likely to be useful than one chosen for a feature list that rarely matches how the project is delivered.
Choose Claude Code if your terminal is the control center
- You already use shell commands, Git, scripts, and an existing IDE as the normal path through a task.
- You want to work with an agent without moving to an AI-native editor.
- Your workflow depends on command-line tooling or MCP servers.
- You value explicit permission prompts before the agent edits files or runs commands.
- A Claude subscription that also supports general Claude use is useful to you.
Anthropic describes Claude Code as running locally in your terminal and talking directly to model APIs without requiring a backend server or remote code index. That can be a good fit when you want the agent to operate within a familiar development setup. It does not, by itself, determine whether the tool meets your organization’s security requirements; check your own retention, residency, and secrets-handling policies.
Choose Cursor if you want an editor-centered agent loop
- You want the agent close to the files you are changing, with a side-panel interface.
- You prefer to inspect a set of diffs and checkpoints as part of the coding loop.
- Different work benefits from using Agent, Ask, or custom modes.
- Your team is interested in cloud agents, Bugbot, team administration, or a marketplace for internal rules and skills.
- In-editor controls and visible review artifacts suit the way developers and reviewers collaborate.
Cursor’s Agent is designed to take on a sequence of related actions, including searching the repository, editing multiple files, running commands, and addressing errors. That is useful when an edit is not a one-file change, but it also makes review discipline important: inspect what changed and check the result before accepting it.

The tools make oversight visible in different ways. Claude Code emphasizes permission before file edits or command execution; Cursor emphasizes editor-based review through diffs, checkpoints, and modes. Neither approach removes the need to review generated changes and run the project’s own checks.
Claude Code: approve actions as they happen
Permission prompts give developers a chance to govern file changes and command execution at the point where those actions are requested. That can suit teams that want a deliberate approval boundary around agent activity. Consider which commands are safe to run, which files are sensitive, and who should approve higher-impact changes before adopting the tool across a project.

Cursor: review the change set in the editor
Cursor’s diffs and checkpoints give reviewers a way to see and track edits within the editor workflow. Its selectable Agent, Ask, and custom modes also let teams adjust the interaction to the task. A visible diff is a review aid, not proof that a change is correct: assess behavior, tests, and unintended edits just as you would for a human-authored patch.
For either product, agree on a simple rule before using an agent on production code: the developer remains responsible for reviewing the resulting patch, understanding commands that ran, and ensuring tests and normal review gates pass.
How do Claude Code and Cursor compare on price?
Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans, while Cursor has several standalone monthly tiers and separately bills third-party model usage at API list price. The amounts below are the plans and prices listed on the vendors’ public pricing pages in the supplied material; plan names, included usage, model availability, and prices can change, so verify them before purchasing.
| Product or plan | Listed price | Billing note |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 per month, or $17 per month with annual billing | Annual billing is $200 up front; Claude Code is included in paid plans |
| Claude Max 5x | $100 per month | Claude Code is included in paid plans |
| Claude Max 20x | $200 per month | Claude Code is included in paid plans |
| Cursor Free | $0 | Public plan listing |
| Cursor Plus | $8 per month | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
| Cursor Premium | $30 per month | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
| Cursor Super | $100 per month | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
| Cursor Ultra | $200 per month | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
| Cursor Teams | $30 or more per user per month | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
| Cursor Enterprise | Custom | Third-party model usage can be billed separately |
What to include in a cost comparison
Do not compare only the entry-level monthly prices. For Claude Code, consider the paid Claude plan that suits the developer’s expected use and whether a subscription for general Claude use is valuable as well. For Cursor, account for the selected plan and any third-party model use billed at API list price. The available material does not provide a like-for-like task allowance or a representative monthly bill, so a precise cost-per-feature comparison would be misleading.
For a team, estimate cost using the people who will actively use the tool, the kinds of tasks they expect to delegate, and how often they rely on third-party models. Treat a short trial as a way to measure your own consumption rather than assuming that a listed tier will cover every developer’s workload.

How do their privacy and security controls compare?
The vendors describe different safeguards, and neither product’s headline privacy statement substitutes for your organization’s requirements. Cursor says Privacy Mode ensures code is never used for training by Cursor or other AI model providers, and that team administrators can enforce the mode organization-wide. Anthropic emphasizes local terminal operation, no required remote code index, and permission prompts. Evaluate those statements against your own retention, data-residency, access, and approval policies.

- Training: Which settings prevent submitted code from being used to train models, and can an administrator enforce the required setting for every user?
- Retention and residency: Where is project data processed, what retention applies, and does that meet the project’s contractual or regulatory obligations?
- Secrets: How will developers keep credentials, environment files, and other sensitive data out of prompts and agent-accessible context?
- Commands and files: Which operations require approval, and what permissions can the agent exercise within the repository and shell?
- Team policy: Who sets the approved configuration, and how will the team handle exceptions or changes to vendor settings?
Cursor’s organization-wide Privacy Mode enforcement is specifically a team control described by Cursor. Claude Code’s permission prompts govern requests to change files or run commands; they are not a substitute for evaluating data handling. Keep those controls distinct when writing a security review.
Which integrations matter for your team?
Integration fit depends on what the team already uses and which parts of its workflow the agent must reach. Cursor documents connections to GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, JetBrains, Slack, and Linear. Claude Code documents terminal and IDE use, Slack, web, GitHub, VS Code, JetBrains, and MCP-based extensions.
Those lists are not interchangeable feature guarantees. Before standardizing, identify the specific integration your project relies on—for example, a repository host, an IDE, or a team communication tool—and verify that the needed connection is available for your intended plan and workflow. If scripts or MCP servers are essential, test the exact setup rather than assuming that support for an integration category covers every internal configuration.
Which tool is better for refactors, debugging, and background work?
Both products document multi-file work, debugging, and feature development, but the available information does not establish that one is more accurate or faster. Choose based on how the task is supervised and where its surrounding workflow lives; then test representative work in your own repository.

Short feature tasks and debugging
For a task with a narrow goal and a clear test, either can be a candidate. In Cursor, a developer can review the agent’s edits in the editor. In Claude Code, a developer can keep the work alongside existing terminal commands and IDE habits. The better fit depends on whether your team gets more value from an editor-centered review loop or from keeping the agent within its current toolchain.
Large refactors and migrations
Multi-file capability is relevant to a broad refactor, but it does not guarantee that a change is complete or safe. Break migrations into reviewable increments, run the project’s relevant tests after each meaningful change, and inspect affected files beyond the obvious edits. If reviewers need checkpoints and visible diffs within one interface, Cursor’s documented workflow may fit; if the refactor depends on shell scripts and established terminal processes, Claude Code may fit better.
Cloud-agent and team workflows
Cursor lists cloud agents, Bugbot, team administration, and a marketplace for internal rules and skills among the capabilities that may matter to teams. Those features can influence the decision when work is delegated or governed across a group. Confirm current availability and requirements directly with the vendor before making them a dependency. The documented Claude Code workflow instead emphasizes local terminal operation and integrations such as GitHub, Slack, IDEs, and MCP-based extensions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you run a project-specific trial?
A meaningful trial should use real work and the same review rules you expect after adoption. Test both tools against a representative repository if the choice is close; do not use a toy task as a proxy for a large codebase or a sensitive project.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose a representative repository. Include the languages, build steps, scripts, and code patterns developers actually maintain. Exclude secrets and data that the trial is not authorized to expose.
- Set permissions and privacy settings first. Decide which files and commands are in scope, enable the required privacy controls, and confirm who can change team settings.
- Pick comparable tasks. Use examples such as a bounded bug fix, a feature spanning related files, and a small refactor. Write down expected behavior and the tests that should pass.
- Use the normal review process. Have developers inspect all generated changes, note commands run, and apply the team’s usual checks and approval gates.
- Test the model mix and budget. Record which plan or model was used for each task, any third-party usage charges, and whether the workflow stayed within the team’s intended budget.
- Evaluate the actual workflow. Ask whether developers could understand and control changes, whether integrations worked as required, and whether review effort was acceptable. Do not treat task completion alone as evidence of quality.
- Recheck vendor terms and pricing before rollout. Features, plan names, model access, prices, and usage allowances are subject to change.
So, should you use Claude Code or Cursor?
Choose Claude Code when the terminal, existing IDE, Git, shell commands, MCP servers, and explicit action approvals are central to how your team ships software. Choose Cursor when you want an AI-first editor where agents, diffs, checkpoints, and in-editor modes shape the development loop. If privacy governance, team administration, or model charges are decisive, compare the exact configuration and expected usage—not just the product labels or monthly starting price.

There is no evidence here for a universal winner on speed or accuracy. The strongest decision is the one that holds up in a trial using your repository, your tests, your permissions, and your review process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Claude Code and Cursor on the same project?
A team can evaluate both against the same repository, but decide in advance how developers will avoid overlapping edits and keep review ownership clear. Treat each agent’s changes as a separate patch and use the project’s normal tests and approvals before merging.
Does either tool guarantee that generated code will pass my tests?
No guarantee is established by the vendors’ described capabilities. Run your own test suite and review behavior and edge cases; an agent’s ability to fix errors is not evidence that it has found every defect.
What should a company check before allowing an AI coding tool on proprietary code?
Map the vendor’s data handling and administrator controls to the company’s contract, residency, retention, and secrets policies. Also define an owner for configuration and a process for reviewing settings when product terms or features change.
Can either tool be evaluated without exposing production secrets?
Use a representative repository prepared for evaluation, with credentials removed and access limited to what the trial requires. Keep the trial within the organization’s approved data-handling boundaries rather than relying on a developer’s personal settings.
